I will remark, that I was once an Open Comniunioniat, I not only theo- rized about it, but my brother and my- sell'put this thing to the test by prac- tice. We organized an Open Com- munion Baptist church, (as we called it) when we did so, we thought, that we would settle the difficulty, so far as our chm-ch was concerned, between us sprinkling- Is the matter settled now? no, what next; as I have done it, I must justify it, right, or wrong, and when the Baptist church preaches to the world, that sprinkling is as valid a a baptism as immersion, the question is eternally settled. The Baptist church and immersion are out of the world. Now reader, should the Baptists com- mune with those whom we will not re- ceive as members of our church?— longing to a company of militia or fire- men, than sitting on juries, voting at elections, being members of corpora- tions, or occupying any kindred posi- tion in concern and contact with indi- viduals not religious. Admit that s associations are forbidden, and believing husbands must put away their unbelieving wives, wives their husbands, aye, and parents their chil- dren! We must shun the turnpike on which unbelievers trave:!, avoid the mill where they grind their corn, not drink water at the same fountain, nor sit in the same meeting house with them! In a word, .we„ must forsake the society of our species, and retire with the monk or" the hermit into the seclusion bf;the cloister; the darkness of the mountain cave, or the loneli- ness and solitude of the desert waste! Riding along one day, reflect- ing about it, my mind passed through this train of reflection: In the days of the apostles, churches were formed and governed upon the same principles, the apostles were di- -vinely inspired; hence there could be no mbunderstanding, and as the churclies were all organized and gov- erned alike,—the members of the dif- ferent churches had easy access into any of the churches, into which they cred institution; but some saj% that they have no right to debar even the mah of sin from that institution, that they have no right to debar any one. I will just call the attention of the read- er, to the 5th chapter of 1 Corinthians 11th verse. "If any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, covetous, &;c. «kc., with such an one no not to eat." Upon PedobaptUt principles, l ean settle this question very easily. Now for the Pedobaptist ground-rthe sacra- ment came in the room of the pass- renmrks, in relation to the church. 1 never was inori^ surprised than when 1 r(!ad his book; 1 knew that Iu; was a strong sectarian; but I had no idea of his bitter recklessness, and I am altogether at a loss now. about the man, in tiiis affair: my difficulty will hereailer appear. There can be no doubt about his intention, in the pub- lication of his book: it is not to bring about that for which christians pray, and which is more to be desired than anything earthly—christian union; his object not to convince us, that we are j wrong, in brotherly love and christian affection; but his object is to destroy the influence ofthe Baptist church, by making the world believe, that we arc not christians: he is indeed, so far as his influence extends, doing malici- ous, murderous work, and I do regret the seeming want of candor on his part. As to his intention, as he sets out ostensibly to kill the Camp- belUtes; but all the time that he is talk- ing about Campbellites, he keeps his eye on the Baptists, and finally he winds out of his circumlocution, and says the Campbellites and the Baptists are the same people. I will now in conclusion, present some ofthe absurdities of his book. Page 103 he presents an organized church, and says infants "are by their parents to be brought into the visible church: the church of Christ, and into co\-enant with God by whatsoever sign and seal he may have appointed in the place ofthe first, which was circumcis- ion; and we know of no other divinely appointed initiatory, but water bap- tbm. Infants ought to be baptised un- til God forbids it." Here he has an organized church. By baptism pereons enter into his church, and by baptism they enter into covenant with God, page 118 and 119 On page the 8th he says^ that the Baptists say, "no immersion no bap- tism. and no promises in the Bible to the unimmersed; leaving them to the uncovenanted mercies of the Lord, which is the same sentiment'' This is an argument to pr6ve,that the Baptists and Campbellites are'one. la it not strange, that brother Burrow should be BO blind as to bring a charge as he thinks, fatal to ..Christianity, against the Baptists and then convict himself positively and most plainly of the same crime? Compare the tioctrines, reader, aid be astonished. Onpage ipi hepreaents tfac.church as a spiritual building, and he has In- fants in ti.at building, and holds the doctrine ofthe final perseverance ofthe saint, and he thunders the law against^ the same indi viduals when they grow up, and tells them,- unless they repent, they will be damned. Oh! consistency, whither hast thou fled. I promised to .prove brother Burrow a bad logician, below is a specimen. Page 108 his premises, "Christ died for all; there -was grace for all; and the commission was to preach to the gospel of the grace of God to all; and to baptise all, all mani- festly for whom there was grace, if there was no grace for Infants then it seems, they shall not have the .=ign and seal of grace." The premises present a platform just broad enough for the world, and brother Burrow puts a little Infant on it, what is the legiti- mate conclusion Irom the premises, that he should preach to all for whom there is grace; is there grace for Idiots? bro. Burrow says, grace for all, he is there- fore bound by his own logic to preach to Idiots, is there grace for 8 days old Infants? "grace for all," he'must preach the gospel to such. Is there grace for wicked men? "Grace for all" he must baptize wicked men. Is there grace for the Infants of unbelievers? "grace for all."' Oh me! Why does not b:o. Burrow baptize all his congrega- tion? of all sizes, colors, ages and de- scription; for according to his ow-n showing, by so doing he would bring them into covenant with God and the Lord's pronuses are sure, and in this way they would all get to heaven and that by water b.iptism. He says, page I-.iG,that we deny Fa- ther, .Son and whole plan of salvation; and again, preface. [)fige the 8th, "For while one does the work of death upon a small scale, the other is destined to do a wholesale business, (the fornier in- fidelity, tlie latter Baptists and Camp- bellites.) Infidelity may boast its thou- sands while this Ism its tens of thou- sands slain. What Ism? it is true, that there is some ambiguity- in the term Ism, but brother BUITOW makes a labored exhibit of features and characteristics, to show, that Camp- bellites and Baptists are the same peo- ple. He says 'they all meet in the water and make that the Polar Star, the one thing needful; so you see he exults, that he has proved that there is no difference between Campbellites and Baptists, making every charge tliat applies to (me applicable to the other, with the alone exception, that the Campbellites arc open commu- nionists and therefore preferable to the Baptists. Re- solve every morning to be cheerful all day, and should any thing occur to break your resolution, suffer it not to put you out of temper with your hus- band. Dispute not with him, be the occasion what it may; but much soon- er deny yourself the trifle of having your own will, or gaining the better of an argument, than risk a quarrel, or create a heartburning which it is im- possible to see the end of. Implicit submission in a man to his -wife, is ev- er disgraceful to both; but implicit sub- mission in the -wife, is what she prom- ised at tly altar, what the good will re- vere her .fot,^and what is, in fact, the greateS^ honor she can receive. Burrow says, grace for all , he is there-

fore bound by his own logic to preach

to Idiots, is there grace for 8 days old

Infants? "grace for al l ," h e ' m u s t

preach the gospel to such. Is there

grace for wicked men? "Grace for a l l "

he must baptize wicked men. Is there

grace for the Infants of unbelievers?

"grace for all."' Oh me! W h y does not

scription; for according to his ow-n

exults, that he has proved that there is

no difference between Campbell ites

and Baptists, mak ing every charge

tliat applies to (me applicable to the

other, with the alone exception, that

nionists and therefore preferable to

the Baptists.

The expenses of the So-ciety over and above what accrue from profits, are made up by legacies and moneys from auxiliary Societies, were it not for these it would become involv-ed at the rate of one or two thousands per year. Such are the evils unavoid-ably entailed upon every Society, like constituted.

All the moneys contributed each year, by individuals and Societies, are swallowed up in house rents and in the salaries of agents,.together with all the profits instead of gratuitous distribtion of our Tennessee Baptist Publication Society, all such moneys go to swell the permanent fund.

This is one of the features of our So-ciety which must give it a superiority over all oth«rs.

The General Association each year will appoint an Executive Board, which will exmine and rccommend the books to be published for, or circulated among, the churches and receive the annual reports of the Board of Mana-gers. In this way the denomination can protect itself against the dissemi-nation of improper doctrines and sen-timents.

In our next we will publish the Bye-aws to be adopted at the next meeting

of the Board.

REMARKS ON THE CHARTER. As we promised in our last No., we

lay before our readers in this, the charter of the Tennessee Baptist Pub-lication Society. It consists of but two Sections. The 1st defines the powers of the Socictj'—i. e. the same as those of any other corporate body, as re-spects the power of declaring or filling vacancies, of sueing and defending, &c., of making bye-laws for its govern-ment, receiving voluntsiry donations upon such terms as may be stipulated in the bye^laws.

The power to invest in real estate &c. property amounting to $10,000 if necessary, but this must be so invested as to yield annually, so long as thus invested a dividend of 6 per cent to the Society. SEC. 2nd, seta forth the objects of

the Society, i. e. to disseminate far and wide religious literature most ef-fectually, obtaining books by purchase and publication,—for which purpose i t provides'for th^'establishment of a per-manent ftmd of any amount (upon the conditions regulated by the bye-laws) by voluntaiy gift or devise, the interest of which, fund to be returned in books to the donor if he desire, for gratuitous distribution, otherwise it will be di-rected bj* the Board of Managers.

W e can explain the workings of this Society under- i ta Charter, thus: A gives 50 dollars to this Society. He has the privilege of directing three dol-lars (thiB intereat) so long as he UTCS, in any book or tract, say Howell on Communion, or Pengilly, or Jewett on Baptism, to" be distributed gratmtously in any place, he may even, designate what book or tract the interest "on this money shall aid to distribute, during hia life and after his death, so long aa t h e existence of flie Federal Compact.

Yes, and the enterprise of the Tenn. Pub. Society is rapidly gaining ground, and making for itself warm friends all

the South West. Two objects will engage our attentions during the present year. To consummate them will call in requisition our most ener-getic efforts.

1st. To put our religious paper in-to ever>' baptist family in the State.

2d. Establish a Church Library of 100 volumes or more, and organize an Auxilliar>- Publication Society in ev-ery Church in the State.

The object of this society is to ex-tend the circulation of its religious pa-per, and the wide spread dessimination of denominational and religious liter-ature. It holds out a plan by which one is made to aid and accomplish the other. The paper has been so much enlarged that it cannot be longer af-forded at $1,50. We cannot believe that any brother will be so ungener-ous as toe i sk i t of us. It is now the cheapest periodical in the South, and we intend to make it still more worthy of patronage. But by a connection with the Publication Society we are able to hold out such inducements as to secure its immediate introduction in-to every Baptist family. We ofier 1200 pages of i«ligiouB and denomina-tional fracts to every brother, sister or Chqrch that will send us the names of 5 new subscribers and $10. These little books can then be circulated gra-iuitously, within or without the bounds of the church. Brother after brother is securing for himself 1200 pages of religious literature, with which to do good. Bro. Meacham, bro, G. Wright; are the ministers, who have already responded, and received their books, and bro. Borthickalay brother has just sent US in the quota.

For we now say that any church sending us 10 new subscribers, shall receive 3000 PAGES OF REUGIODS TRACTS!! These will form of them-selves quite a library, rnaking 5 or 600 little books. I will here say that those young men who got up this society .were none of them members of the church, enough I think to make all church members who are in the habit of dram drinking ashamed and abandon forever that sin-ful and disgusting practice. As 1 have been requested to fend you a com-munication and get those tracts, please forward them as soon as convenient.

I think those young men deserve great commendation for their praise-worthy design, and as I feel incompe-tent to do them justice, will you please to give them their due.

A certain church, having repaired their house of worship, purchased a stove, thought it necessary to employ some one to perform the ofSee of sex-ton, in order to have the stove hot and the house warm, before the congrega-tion collect^. Accordingly an old servant, familiarly called Uncle Bob, was employed, who entered on his du-ties the next day. He came early and had the house in very good order, but soon after the congregation met. Uncle Bob disappeared, and went home, much disconcerted from some cause. When he came to give the reason to the family, why he acted so, he said, I moved every bench and swept out the house clean and nice, but when the people came, the men crowded arovmd the stove, chewed their tobacco, and spit all over the floor, which I worked BO hard on to make it look well. This hurt my feelings so bad, I was obliged to leave. Let us now reflect, here waa an illiterate African descendant, ac-cording to his statement, so disgusted, that he left the worshiping assembly. How many others E ^ similarly disgus-ted by spectacles of . tWs kind, we can-not say; we are sure," that every indi-vidual of refinement and cidtivated taste loathes such a scene, and doubt-less the tobacco chewers themselves, are somewhat reluctant to look at the puddles they make. Now would i tnpt be well for them to recollect that some are displeased if not nauseated with such a sight? Jf Unci? Bob was,'might we not reasonably suppose tlmt every one, even the most uncultivated, has a_ sense of propriety suffilcient to render such a scene disgustful. .' ! if you thus abuse his sanctuarj^, be-sides, if they are disgusted, who they Inay not leavejyet it has a tendency to divert tlieir minds, from the all impor-tant subjectto which their minds should alone be directed and to consider and which they were called together. A-gain it interferes with your own de-votional feelings and with the devo-tion of those who sit near you, to say nothing of those at a distance. If you have well besmeared Jbe floor, or set afloat a stream or two, how can you, or your brethren kneel without think-ing of the dreadful predicament your pants will be in, unless you find a clean place, or keep your knees from touching the flow? In either case your attention and theirs will be directed from God to the puddle: thus the crea-ture tobacco, with its train of evils, is thought as much, or more of during the hours of worship than the creator. Shall these things be? But if I did not chew says a brother, I could not wor-ship for thinking of it. Then think and leave ofi"a useless practice which cost you much money, interfere.s with your devotional feelings, and that of your brethren, disgusts at least many of the congregation, spoils the appear-ance of ladies and gentlemen's clothes, interferes with the solemnity of pray-er, and soil the house of God and often the sacred desk. Leave it off at once, and appropriate the money you would spend for it, to the spread of the ever-lasting gospel, and you will accom-plish.a twofold;good. And who can tell how much you and others may be blessed.

How much happier would the church be at home, and how much more it would prosper abroad. But one might say, we will cling to our tobacoo but we will be more genteel, we vdll use boxes in church, and avert the evils you spake of. B u t t h b will not avert the evil; the boxes will discommode^ some, disgust others, and together with'" the tobacco, will divide the attention of the chewers, w hich attention should be concentrated in one focal point of devotion, upon the object of idl reli-gious adoration.

Let tobacco chewing then be discon-tinued, especially in time of divine ser-vice, and in the hoUse of God.,

W e are anxiously wishing for Dr. James ' arrival. The laist three over-land mails all brought me letters from him. The demise of dear brother Clop-ton has made a sad vacancy in the Canton mission. It is of serious im-lortance that hia place be immediate-y filled. And allow me to say, that

six men at Canton, and six at Shang-hai, are the smallest number by which these stations can be efficiently sus-tained. God I tru.'it will give the Board both the men and the means.

Letter from Brother Yates. Our readers will be gratified to hear

of the pleasant voyage and safe arri-val of brother Yates at Hong Kong.— Though detained at Boston by the sick-ness of his wife, when the Ashburton sailed, yet we suppose he will he the first to arrive at the field of labor at Shanghai The extract below is from a letter written on board ship, and da-ted July 31, 1847, a short time before their arrival at Hong Kong.

"Believing that you entertain such solicitude for our welfare, a-s will give a welcome to all communications, I feel it to be not only a duty,- but a pleasure to avail myself of every op-portunity to inform you of our pro-gress. In the providence of God we sighted Java on the 30th July, 25 days from Boston.

Our passage, thus far, upon the r p _ . ^ whole, has been pleasant; far more so in attendance. The number

information of my appointment by the Foreign Mission Board of the South-ern Baptist Convention, as their mis-sionary. I assure you 1 cordially ac-cept the appointment, hoping with Di-vine assistance to be of some use in the missionary cause. It is pro-per for me to state, that in view of the destitution in thia country, with confi-dence in the Board, bro. Day thought fit to authorize me, soon after he had received his appointment, to take charge of the field and station 1 now occupy, viz: New Virginia settlement, with the surrounding villages. With-out delay, I came, leaving my family at Monrovia. There being no house here suitable for divine worship, nor one which I could get for my own ac-commodation, I was obliged to build temporary houses in the native style, for my own residence and for a house of worship, until I could hear from you more particularly on this subject.— These houses being only temporary, were built on leased land, whicn I ob-tained for the term of eighteen months, but I have since drawn a lot from the governor for missionary purposes, as instrocted by brother Day. I commen-ced my labors here on the first day of last April, completed the houses in three months, and opened a common day school on the 19th of July, receiv-ing thirty-three American children, who have ever since been very prompt

Far the Tennessee Baptist. Died in Shelby county, Tenn., Feb-

ruary the 16th, 1848, Mr. Thos. Allen. Brother Allen, was in the sixty-se-

cond year of his age. Surrounded by a host of friends, to whom he had en-deared himself by his mild and ami-able disposition. H e was converted to God in August, 1846, and joined the Baptist church a t Bethany, after which he uved a decided ctaristianand meek-S' , and patiently borfr his cross up to

e time of his death. His last illness was short but severe. With delight may one gaze upon the heaven-bright countenance of the expiring saint, while standing upon the trembling confines of a retreating world, with the rod and staff of David's, God grasped firmly in hand, wsuting the signal to be given by the great Captjun of salva-tion, when the waters of Jordan woidd divide and he pass over to the promis-ed inheritance. I t may be said of bro-ther Allen truly, that he was not only a Mnd husband and an affectionate, fia-ther, but as far as christian benevo-lence was concerned, he was kind to the poor, and the widow and orphan shared bountifully of his benevolence. The wife and family of brother Allen must indeed miss him greatly, but have the sympathies of the church to which he belonged, and of the vicinity in which he lived. I have never known a death more lamented by friends and acquaintances in all my life; thus our brother sleeps beneath the silent clod, until awaked by the last loud t rump of Go&, when he will arise in the like-ness of hia Saviour.

than we had anticipated. The horrors of a life a t sea, to us, have been great-ly exaggerated. Thus far we have not been permitted to form a very ex-tended acquaintance with the terrific scenes of a "life on the ocean wave," but have had simply an introduction. Up to July we had plea.sant weather. In lat. 40 degrees and long. 40 degrees, on the night of July 2nd, we were roused from sleep by the tramp of the sailors, the shrill cry the captain, and the still more hideous howling of the winds. W e found ourselves driven be-fore a violent gale. W e passed the remainder of the night as comfortably as possible. In the morning- the wind blew with indescribable violence. The sheet of the fore-topsail under close reef, parted from the belaying pin, but as the violence of the wind soon aba-ted for a minute, it was made fast without sustaining any injury. This weather continued until the 7th. The wind being well aft, our gallant ship made great speed, making, from the 25th of June to the 15th of July, 116 degrees of longitude. There is in a storm at aea something that is awfully sublime, and yet to a composed mind there is much that is beautiful.

By the mercy of God we trust soon to join our missionary friends, on the way to our appointed station.

If I could speak to my dear brethren of the churches, 1 would say, there is a weight of responsibility resting upon you. The heathen world must be con-verted to God. This can be effected only by the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Tha t the great mass of man-kind are without this boon of life i.s a startling fact. Look to the three hun-dred millions of perishing souLs in Chi-nti. Brethren! brethren! shall China be converted from heathenism? Will you/ 'come up with us to the help of the Lord against the mighty, and possess the land?" Brethren have long pray-ed tha t China might be opened for the reception of the gospel. Have you ev-er thought what your prayers would cost; that to have tiiem answered pla-ces you under the strongest possi-ble obligations to exert yourselves to the utmost to send the gospel to that people, since God in his providence has opened the way? To each one I would put this interrogation. Are you a mis-sionary? Do yon belong to a mission-ary church? What are you and your church doing for the heathen? Per-hays you are a missionary by profes-sion, but not in works. What does our Saviour say of those who profess to love him, and "keep not his command-ments? '

Dear brethren, pray for us, that we may be supportcid in our trials. May the Lord unite us in efforts, and bring us home to heaven together.

IS now thirty-eight. All are improving rapid-ly; twelve read well in the New Testa-ment. I am much in want of spelling books and Testaments, for which 1 pre-sume brother Day has written. T little church of which 1 have the pastor-al charge numbered eighteen members when 1 came liere. 1 have receivet since, by experience five, by baptism four, and 1 hope soon others may be

I brought in. When here, 1 conduct an interesting Sunday-school, composec chiefly of adults, all of whom are yet unable to read the Bible. They seeni anxious to learn. Other places am accustomed to visit, where 1 talk to the people, rf God and of spiritua things. Though 1 have not yet seen any fruit of my labor, yet I hope to be instrumental in doing good.

My instructions from brother Da; say that I must keep a day school for American and native children, and preach among destitute churches in this vicinity, all of which I have endea-vored to do. But 1 find these labors more than I can discharge, without an assistant teacher. I have requested brother Day to notify you of this.

At the last meeting of the Board, Boston I. Drayton, a colored brother, w a s appointed their missionary to la-bor on the coast of Afiica, in connec-tion with those already in the field. It b expected he will sail in a few weeks. W e have now four missionaries for Af-rica, and the hope is entertained that soon the number will be doubled. The attention of pastors is called to this subject. ther James, one of our missionaries on the coast of Africa. The destitution of which he speaks, and the need of ad-ditional laborers, exists not only in his particular field, but for three h ^ d r e d milea^ along tiie coast. NINE MAXIMS FOR T H E CON-DUCT O F LIFE.

1st. Make no promises that you are uncertain of being unable to perform.

2nd. Deception soon begets distrust. It debases a man in his on eye. W e should have too much pride to deceive others. The oflispring of one decep-tion is legion. It marches to its pur-poses, accompanied by meanness and all the petty vices in the calendar.

3rd. The man who hopes to enrich himself suddenly, without honest in-dustry, differs little from the gambler, whose fortune is staked upon the cast of a die. Virtues without number hedge the path of industrious and per-severing laborers. Perhaps a fond wife and children are to be supported. Prefaced thus we give this maxim: Let gambling in all its forms be shunned; from it no virtues spring; but on the contrary all vices. Chances in lot-teries and inordinate speculation, are other names for gambling, and are a-like opposed to habits of industry.

4th. Act as if you were to continue always in what station of a public character you may be placed, (even if appointed for a very limited period.

5th. Fear not to have each and ev-ery action of your life open to the in-spection of mankind. Remember that a nicer casuist than man sees into your best actions. Answer to him and fear not the face of man.

6th. Tell not all your thoughts, yet speak the truth always and boldly.

7tii. W h a t you have to do, do quick-ly, for procrastination will lead to for-getfulness.

8th. Let not a desire to be thought well of lead you to exhibit your talents upon all occasions. But greatness and worth ia always clothed in a modest exterior. It is the vice of little minds to go abroad gaudily attired like the

T I O N . — W e have the Proceedings of the Fifth Annual meeting of this body, held at Nashville, Tennessee, October 28-30, 1847. President T. G. Blewett; Corresponding Secretary, S. Dyer.

The Report gives a tabular view of the Indian tribes contiguous to the Un-ited States. The population of twen-ty three tribes thus given is 202,210. Laboring among these, are 35 Bap-tist missionaries. Of these tribes, Ae Cherokeea and Choctaws, number-ing 46,000, have adopted most of the habits of civilized life; have printing presses, schools and churches, and are very good farmers. The Creeks and Seminoles, 27,000 in number, are men-tioned as rapidly advancing.

The Association resolved to memo-rialize the United States Government on the subject of setting apart a Se-cond Indian Territory, for exclusive Indian occupation. The memorial has since been forwarded to Waahington.

The Association has under its care 6 stations, 20 preaching stations, 18 mis-sionaries, 7 churches, 3 schools. There are about 500 communicants.

The receipts of the last year were S9,603,17. Theexpenditures,S7,039,-40.

W e notice numerous errors in the spelling of the names of Life Mem-bers, particularly of those in Alabama. For these, we fear, our good brother Da%-i3, the Agent, must be responsi-ble.
