THE CLOCK IS TICKING and time is running out! For local parents seeking top-quality daycare for their children, their best option could be taken away from them on August 16th. That’s ‘Decision Day’ for Child Care Algoma: the day they must decide whether they can continue offering their ‘Early Learning & Care’ program. In our June 3rd issue, we told the story of the St. Joseph Island ‘Early Learning & Care’ centre, located in the St. Joseph Island Central School, which Child Care Algoma operates for the benefit of families in our area. The program is designed specifically to meet the special needs of our rural community. In addition to providing a wonderful ‘daycare’ option for parents, the program is also recognized for the ‘Early Start’ it gives children, better preparing them for entry into the Public School system. Children entering the school system from this program tend to be better socialized, and have a much easier time ‘acclimatizing’ to the school environ- ment. The program is enthusiastically endorsed by Central School Principal Don Nadeau and staff, and perhaps most importantly, by the children and parents. But, in spite of the excellence of the program, the enthusiastic support of the parents and the convenience of the hours, the actual number of children enrolled is still not enough to justify keeping the doors open. Kelly Rowlinson, Program Co-ordinator for Child Care Algoma, can’t help but wonder why!“We held Open Houses in June.” she informs us.“We asked parents to complete a survey on their childcare needs and preferences and, with the help of the Township of St. Joseph, urgent notices were sent out with tax bills, all with little or no response from parents.” Concerned parent Crystal Wells added her own personal ‘public’ appeal in the Island Clippings’ July 29th issue. Kelly and Crystal, as well as other parents, even handed out notices of the crisis at both Island Community Nights.

Island Daycare Crisis!THE CLOCK IS TICKING and time is running out! For localparents seeking top-quality daycare for their children, theirbest option could be taken away from them on August 16th.That’s ‘Decision Day’ for Child Care Algoma: the day theymust decide whether they can continue offering their ‘EarlyLearning & Care’ program.

In our June 3rd issue, we told the story of the St. JosephIsland ‘Early Learning & Care’ centre, located in the St. JosephIsland Central School, which Child Care Algoma operates forthe benefit of families in our area. The program is designedspecifically to meet the special needs of our rural community.

In addition to providing a wonderful ‘daycare’ option forparents, the program is also recognized for the ‘Early Start’ itgives children, better preparing them for entry into the PublicSchool system. Children entering the school system from thisprogram tend to be better socialized, and have a much easiertime ‘acclimatizing’ to the school environ-ment. The program is enthusiasticallyendorsed by Central School Principal DonNadeau and staff, and perhaps most

importantly, by the children and parents.

But, in spite of the excellence of the program, the enthusiasticsupport of the parents and the convenience of the hours, theactual number of children enrolled is still not enough tojustify keeping the doors open.

Kelly Rowlinson, Program Co-ordinator for Child CareAlgoma, can’t help but wonder why! “We held Open Housesin June.” she informs us. “We asked parents to complete asurvey on their childcare needs and preferences and, with thehelp of the Township of St. Joseph, urgent notices were sentout with tax bills, all with little or no response from parents.”

Concerned parent Crystal Wells added her own personal‘public’ appeal in the Island Clippings’ July 29th issue. Kellyand Crystal, as well as other parents, even handed out noticesof the crisis at both Island Community Nights.

“Perhaps parents aren’t coming forward because they thinkthey can’t afford such high quality daycare”, Kelly offers. “If so,they could be seriously mistaken! Each place in the programcan be subsidized by up to 100% - that’s FREE - based on oneline of your Income Tax Return!”

Or, perhaps these parents think that the program doesn’t suittheir working hours.Wrong again! The centre’s hours areextremely flexible to meet the needs of working parents, and anutritious hot lunch and two snacks are served every day.

The program has a waiting list for future enrollments, butthese children are too young for this year. For these ‘future’enrollees, it may soon be too late. “If we are forced to let theprogram go, it will be very, very difficult to obtain funding tobring it back again later.” warns Kelly.

If it does become necessary to cancel the program, Child CareAlgoma is looking into possibly replacing it with a ‘Before &After School’ program for 4 to 12 year olds, plus a ‘Readinessto Learn’ program for kids aged 18 months to 4 years. Bothprograms would be located at the Island Central School. Butagain, they can’t offer a program if parents won’t take advan-tage of it.

So this is it! Last chance! If you want to make life a little easierfor you and your child, talk with Kelly right away! She wouldwelcome the chance to hear your views, answer your questionsand help with your subsidy and enrollment. She can bereached at: 248-2043 or on her cell at 705-946-9879 or byemail to [email protected].

But don’t put this off! August 16th is only days away …. andthe clock is ticking!

Fire Hall Break InSOMETIME LAST WEEKEND, someone smashed a door lockto gain entry to the Jocelyn Fire Hall on the 4th Concession.Although no details are available at press time, unconfirmedrumours are that the perpetrator approached from the bush atthe rear of the fire hall, riding either a motorcycle or ATV. It isnot yet clear whether this was an attempted theft or merely anact of mindless, senseless vandalism.

No equipment on the fire truck itself was stolen or damaged, but Jocelyn Fire officials have been forced to at leasttemporarily move the fire truck to a more secure location. The ‘pumper’ truck is a front-line firefighting vehicle that isbased at the 4th Concession site to optimize firefightingcoverage for the southern portion of Jocelyn Township. It isalso equipped with specialized equipment for fighting brushfires, making it doubly valuable to the township’s firefightingability. Its loss or damage would have a serious impact andwould be hard to replace.

If you have any information that can help track down thisthief or vandal, please call Crime Stoppers at 942-7867 or1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). You can also provide tips via theCrime Stoppers website at www.saultcrimestoppers.com ortext the keyword SSM along with your information to 274367.

While any act of this nature is a cowardly invasion ofsomeone’s personal space, it is even more serious when itcould affect the safety and security of hundreds of home-owners!

Rachael Davis is coming to the Island!YOU’VE PROBABLY SEEN the posters everywhere and the excitement is alreadybuilding. For fans of ‘real’ old time country, traditional folk, sweet jazz or the blues,Rachael Davis offers a night to remember for a long, long time!

Rachael will be taking the stage at 7 pm onSaturday, August 28th at the Legion Hallin Richards Landing, along with herspecial guest, Joshua Davis. Although theydon’t share a bloodline, they’re two of thebest singer/songwriter combinations thatMichigan has to offer.

Rachael’s amazing voice is a sweet mix ofthe best of Alison Krauss, Bonnie Raittand Janice Joplin. She has been singingsince the age of 2 and over her 10 year solocareer, she has released 4 albums, done liveradio shows and has lent her voice tocountless other recordings includingtracks for film, television and guest vocalson other records.

Joshua Davis’s oil-on-canvas lyrics, brought tolife by his rich vocal style, will straighten thespine of every listener. The rest of the band ismade up of all-star players Mike Lynch onorgan and keys, Dominic John Davis on bassand Jason Scott behind the drums.

Every member of this band is famous in theirown right and could carry the show all bythemselves, so the combination is really some-thing to see. They play some of the best blues,

folk and jazz that you will ever hear in a liveshow!

This all-star band has been a headliner at mostof the larger festivals here in North Americathis summer, including Bliss Fest and the Dune-grass Festival. Several members of Rachael’sband are also part of the world famous groups“Steppin’ In It” and “Shout Sister Shout”, andhave been touring the globe for over 10 years.

We’re delighted that they’ll be making a stop onour Island! And as a special treat for us, wehear that the concert will take the form of agood, old-fashioned variety show, harkeningback to the ‘live radio’ days of the 30’s, 40’s and50’s – the ‘Golden Age’ of country music .

Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door, and are now on sale at the Legion, Ambeault’sConfectionery and Kent’s Corners.

A St. Joseph Island

MuseumMomentONE THING THAT NEVER FAILS to catch a visitors’ interestat the museum is a certain big red fire truck, it is such an eyecatcher. The mixture of the bright red paint job, the enor-mous headlights, everything shiny and chromed, and thesheer size of the truck just seem to draw people towards it sothey can admire it’s qualities. The one thing on the truck thatcaught my eye was the company name on the grille. It is not aFord, Dodge, Chevrolet, or even a Studebaker. The badgereads “Graham Brothers Canada”. This is a company that Ihad never heard of so I decided to do some digging.

I found out that Graham Brothers was an American companythat produced cars and trucks throughout the first half of thecentury. They purchased the Paige-Detroit motor company inthe same year our fire truck was manufactured (1927) makingGraham Brothers into Graham Paige. Most trucks sported abadge that read “Graham Brothers Detroit” but our truck wasmanufactured in the Graham plant in Toronto which ranthroughout the manufacturing of Graham Brothers trucks. The Canadian trucks were virtually the same as the Americantrucks except for the “Canada” on the badge. As far as I couldtell; most trucks including our truck had Dodge engines. Thecompany’s cars seemed to disappear in the late 40’s and thatseemed to be the last of the Graham Brothers. However, thiswas not enough for me. I know that everything must have aninteresting story behind it, so I dug deeper.

Turns out, the three Graham brothers were quite avid busi-nessmen. They started their careers as businessmen by havinga go at the manufacturing of glass bottles, quite a jump fromthat to fire trucks. The Graham brothers are actually creditedfor the manufacturing of bottles upside down to make abottle strong enough for a cap rather than a cork. This glasscompany was eventually bought out by another so theGraham Brothers next endeavor was to build kits to convertFord Model Ts into trucks. This led them to start makingtheir own trucks with various different engines but they even-tually settled on Dodge engines. Their trucks would soon besold by Dodge dealers and their partnership with Dodgecontinued as Dodge purchased the company in 1925.

The Graham brothers split from Dodge in the year of 1927(same year our truck was built) although the trucks stillfeatured Dodge engines. This is when Graham-Paige wasformed and they began to build cars. Their first car, the BlueStreak, was a hit going into the 30s but the depression hitGraham Brothers hard. The next models that Graham-Paigebuilt absolutely flunked and this led to the end of theGraham-Paige manufacture of cars, but not the end ofGraham-Paige.

Graham-Paige went on into real estate after their venture incars and bought up famous properties such as the RooseveltRaceway and Madison Square Gardens. Some form of thesame company that built our truck still owns the MadisonSquare Gardens today. Just goes to prove that everything herehas a neat story to tell.

Home alone – notanymore!

Your adult child is back! Call ‘em Boomerang Kids or KIPPERS (KidsIn Parents’ Pockets Eroding RetirementSavings) – but by any name, the number ofadult children living with their parents is on the rise. And forBoomers, that can be a double whammy because many arebeing sandwiched between caring for their adult children andfor their aging parents.

A recent survey* of Boomers revealed that four-in-ten whocare for both children and parents say they have been forcedto reduce the amount they’re investing for retirement, one-quarter say they have adopted a less comfortable lifestyle, andone-quarter expressed concern that this financial assistancewill jeopardize their retirement security.

There’s no doubt that having adult children at home createsfinancial challenges by increasing the cost of living, creating adrag on savings, and even causing a loss of freedom. Here aresome practical ideas about how to reduce stress, hard feelingsand avoid potential financial disaster:

Pay to stay:Treat your child as an adult and try to replicate ‘real world’conditions by having them contribute to household expenses, chores, and even pay rent. If they aren’t employed, encouragethem to actively seek work.

Invest in a secure future: As an alternative to paying rent, insist that your adult childestablishes an investment plan to help pay a future downpayment on their own home.

Tax reliefIf your stay-at-home adult kid is also a student and has no taxto pay, you can relieve some of the pinch on your finances bytaking advantage of unused federal tuition and educationcredits (combined). Up to $750 can be transferred from thestudent to a parent. (Provincial tax credits may also be avail-able.)

Define ‘rent’Is your child paying you fair market value rent or just enoughto cover their share of home upkeep and the cost of groceries? If it’s the latter, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says youdon’t need to report that income on your tax return but youcannot deduct expenses. If you attempt to claim a rental loss, the CRA will put you to the test of proving the rental rate is atfair market value, and there is a reasonable expectation ofprofit.

With children taking longer to become self-sufficient andaging parents expected to live longer, Boomers could be in fora rough ride. The first step is talk openly with your childrenabout money and responsibility. PC Doctorby George Skardis

QUESTION: My Windows 98 computer is acting up. Can acomputer this old be repaired or upgraded?

ANSWER: Your Windows 98 (W98) computer has given atleast 10 years of service. A computer this old will mostcertainly have hardware and software problems. The mostsignificant disadvantage for a decade old computer is lack ofcompatibility with today’s Internet, computer accessories, and newer programs.

Replacement parts are readily available for contemporarycomputer equipment less than 5 years old. However, manu-facturers and distributors do not stock hard-drives, powersupplies, and cooling fans required to perform a properrepair on vintage computer equipment 10 years old. Even ifthrough some magic one could locate fresh parts, a refur-bished W98 computer lacks processor speed and RAM forcurrently more demanding applications. Computer mother-boards are designed with specific limitations. A Pentium I orPentium II processor cannot be replaced with a modern DualCore or Quad Core processor. It’s the same story with RAM.In other words, a refurbished W98 computer will nevermatch performance and features offered by a new computer.

Internet security programs and popular Internet browserssuch as Firefox and Internet Explorer no longer support theWindows 98 Operating System. Consequently, browsing theInternet and checking your email falters and web pages donot display leading to unnecessary frustration. Your W98computer is no longer compatible with many Internet activi-ties. You are expected to follow the moving target. TheInternet is driven by commercial demands and big buckcompetition resulting in spectacular web sites. You areexpected to have high-speed Internet and proper computerequipment to enjoy this phenomenon. Replace yourWindows 98 computer with an up-to-date Windows 7computer.

The hand-writing is on the wall. Backup your files and wipethe old hard-drive completely. Take your tired computerequipment to the Community Recycling Depot, at 285Wilson Street in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Call (705) 256-8581 to confirm hours of operation. This service is freeaccepting all types of computer and electronic equipment.

QUESTION: I just purchased a brand new Windows 7computer. It keeps reminding me about some type ofrecovery disk and I keep saying “later”. What should I do?

ANSWER: You must deal with this reminder immediately.New computers do not come with Windows 7 installationdisks. Have blank DVD’s and a Sharpie CD/DVD marker onhand. Close all other programs. Find and run the RecoveryDisk Creator program. Allow at least 1 hour for this task.Label and keep these precious recovery disks tucked away.
