First Space Shuttle Launch
Columbia—April 12, 1981
Valentines Day Launch of Turksat International Launch Services (ILS) headquarterd in Reston, Virginia used Russia’s Proton rocket to launch a Turkish satellite on Valentines Day. ILS has launched over 80 Proton rockets. This event clearly demonstrates international participation in space. The American based ILS company used a Russian rocket to launch the 5ton communications satellite from Kazakhstan. Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric (MELCO) constructed the satellite for a joint venture between Thales Alenia Space, a French-Italian company, and Turksat, a Turkish communications company. The satellite sends broadcast TV and direct TV between Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Sources: Spaceflight Insider and Wikipedia. House Passes Bill to Hogtie NASA Congress wants to keep control of its porkbarrel programs, and not let NASA manage important priorities. The House of Representatives Science
Committee has recently passed an unprecedented bill to formally prohibit
NASA from terminating a program within that agency. The bill makes NASA compete with private enterprise through spending billions on pet programs.
The referenced article attempts to justify the bill without mentioning that a
primary reason for the bill is to spend huge amounts in as many congressional
districts as possible. The Space Launch System, a very large rocket, is one
of the programs congress wants to protect. A sad part of this is that after
spending several times as much as necessary to develop an large rocket,
congress will probably limit launches to control costs. See source America
