here are various “Champions” and “Championships” in pro wrestling. Through the
years, I have seen many different “Champion” classifications in the various wrestling
organizations: Intercontinental Champions. Television Champions. Tag-team
Champions. United States Champions. Light/Junior Heavyweight Champions.
Hardcore Champions. World Heavyweight. Six-man tag-team Champions. Regional
Champions. It seemed like there was a “Champion” for every conceivable angle. And, each
regional organization would claim that their “Champions” were the most prestigious and far
superior above any of the others. Some organizations wouldn’t even recognize other
organizations and their champions.
In any pro wrestling championship match, there must be one victor and one loser; there can
only be one champion. This is what made championship matches so exciting to watch. There
would be a huge, dramatic storyline build-up prior to the match and all of the fans would be
anticipating what would happen. And, actually being in the arena for the match would add an
extra level of electricity and excitement. I would be sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to
see what the outcome of the match would be. Yeah, I knew that the outcomes were “staged,”
but not knowing how it all would end up was part of the fun and excitement.
The match would go one way, and it would appear that one wrestler would get the win. Then,
out of nowhere, the match would go the other way towards the opponent. Back-and-forth the
match would go, sometimes multiple times over. Yeah, those scriptwriters and matchmakers
really knew how to keep the drama going and how to keep the fans guessing! But in the end,
surely the “baby-face” would have to defeat the “heel” and gain the championship victory!
Okay, back to real life. As I stated in the last chapter, our lives are in a no-holds-barred death
match. This world is our “arena” and we are taking part in the greatest championship match
of all time: the eternal championship! So, what does this mean? And, how does someone win
the “eternal championship” match? Let’s take a look at a few key topics, each detailing truths
T

leading to how to gain this victory.
So, what are we fighting for? What is this eternal championship? To begin with, we need to
understand what eternity is all about. One definition for the word “eternal” is, “to last
forever.” That is a very long time! Since things in this world won’t last forever we need to
look outside of our world to fully understand this word and grasp what it holds.
Scripture makes the case for eternity in very clear terms. In Titus 1:1-2 (ESV) the Apostle
Paul states, “Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of
God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal
life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began.”
And then, 1 John 2:25 (ESV) states, “And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal
life.”
Just from these two verses we learn a very important foundational truth that we need to come
to grips with. These verses tell us that God, who never lies, has promised us eternal life. Do
we believe in God? If so, do we believe that He never lies? According to scriptures, this
world is not the end. There is an eternity waiting for everyone. Since we are created spirits,
our spirits will live on for all eternity. The question is, what does this “eternity” look like and
how do we obtain it?
John 3:16-19 (NIV) states, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His
Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever
believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already
because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict:
Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds
were evil.”
2 Corinthians 5:1 (ESV), states, “For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is
destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the
heavens.”
Ephesians 1:13-14 (ESV) provides for us a further blessing and confirmation regarding
eternal salvation. This passage states, “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his
glory.”
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 5 of 16
You see, contrary to some theology, once a person accepts Jesus Christ as Lord they cannot
lose that salvation. Salvation is a sealed promise by the Holy Spirit. It is a done deal! There is
nothing a person can do to revoke this eternal promise. Think of it this way: We are a part of
an earthy family. We have earthly parents. There is nothing that we can do to change that
fact. Do we upset and disobey our parents in life? Sure we do! However, that disobedience
does not change the fact that we are still a part of the family. Eternal salvation is the same
way. Do we upset and sin against God? Yes, of course we do, everyday! We are all
imperfect! Yet, our imperfectness does not negate God’s promise to us for eternal security.
We are still a part of His family and there is nothing that can change that! This should bring
hope and peace to those that read this.
This is all such great news! I am so glad that we’re not going to stay here in this dying world
forever. There is hope and a wonderful eternity waiting for us in Heaven. And, it will be so
much more than we could ever imagine: Streets of gold. No pain, or sickness, or suffering or
death. And, no spam emails, telemarketing calls, and political ads! Hallelujah! I can’t wait!
However, if we only focus on this “wonderful” aspect of eternity we are not having a
complete, realistic, and Biblical understanding of the full aspect of eternity. Because, whether
or not you choose to believe it, there is a catch and another side and outcome of eternity that
isn’t so pleasant.
According to 2 Thessalonians 1:8-10 (ESV) there will be another eternity, “in flaming fire,
inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the
gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from
the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, when he comes on that day to be
glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our
testimony to you was believed.”
This is what scripture calls “Hell,” or eternal separation from God. For all of the “good” and
“wonderful” things that will occur in Heaven, Hell will be the polar opposite, for all eternity.
And unfortunately, some people will be headed straight for this less-than-desirable
destination.
However, people argue and question, “Why would a loving God send people to Hell?” This
is a good question; but there is a better question to ask. I will get to that in a moment.
1 Peter 1:15-16 (ESV) states, “but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your
conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
The word “Holy” can mean “exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 6 of 16
goodness and righteousness.” Some synonyms for the word “holy” include: chaste, moral,
pure.
Okay, so what does this tell us?
The better question to ask is, “Why would a holy and pure God allow impurities to enter
Heaven?”
Think about the symbolism of a bride wearing white on her wedding day. The desired
symbolism is to show “purity,” an unblemished gift, worthy only for one. What would
happen if the bride came down the aisle in a white gown that was torn and stained with mud?
Obviously, this would be a less-than-desirable scenario, especially for the bride. She wants
everything to be perfect!
God is the same way. Everything in Heaven is perfect. God is perfect and holy and cannot
allow or accept anything that is imperfect or impure to enter Heaven and into His presence.
Think about the following: You are parched and want a glass of crystal clear, ice-cold water.
You then pour yourself a glass and are ready to drink it. However, little did you know that
large portions of salt have also made its way into your glass. You start to take a large swig of
this water only to instantly become repulsed and repelled by the impurities that have
consumed and tainted the water. You cannot drink this water as it is now imperfect. You
simply cannot allow this to enter your body or else you will get sick. This is the same way
with God and His standards for Heaven.
In scripture, God is shown to be the “Bridegroom” and Christians are His “Bride.” One day,
He will be coming for His bride. He is perfect and expects perfection. However, we are not
perfect, nor can we become perfect, on our own. So, what keeps us from God and how can
we become the perfect, pure “bride” that God desires?
Simply put: Our sins keep us from a relationship with God and eternal life in Heaven. So,
what is a sin? According to the dictionary, a “sin” is described as, 1. Transgression of divine
law: the sin of Adam. 2. Any act regarded as such a transgression, especially a willful or
deliberate violation of some religious or moral principle.
The Bible gives us a clearer view of what a “sin” is as God details the “Ten
Commandments.” In Exodus 20:1-17 God states the following:
“And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of
the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. (1) You shall have no other gods before me.
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 7 of 16
(2) You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in
heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall
not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting
the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who
hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my
commandments. (3) You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the
Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. (4) Remember the Sabbath
day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a
Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your
daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who
is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is
in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made
it holy. (5) Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that
the Lord your God is giving you. (6) You shall not murder. (7) You shall not commit
adultery. (8) You shall not steal. (9) You shall not bear false witness against your
neighbor. (10) You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your
neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or
anything that is your neighbor's.”
This is the starting point to understanding what “sin” is. These are God’s foundational
standards by which all other sins stem from.
Contrary to popular belief and the changing moral fibers of our culture, there are [still] sins
and consequences for our sins. G.K. Chesterton pointed out that, “Fallacies do not cease to
be fallacies because they become fashions.” Just read Romans Chapter 1 [the entire chapter]
and you will find a very clear explanation about sins that are still considered “sin,” according
to God’s word. Yet, we as a culture have now attempted to blur the lines of “sin.” Once
again, we find ourselves back to Genesis 3 and the Enemy’s question, “Did God really
say…?”
Isaiah 59:1-2, states, “Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear
dull, that it cannot hear; but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your
God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.”
Romans 6:23 (NIV) states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in
Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Our sins bring about death and eternal separation from God. Yet, there is hope.
…
Some people today, in their “relativistic worldview,” suggest that all religions can and should
simply “coexist.” I am sure that you have seen the bumper stickers with the “coexist” word
created utilizing various religious symbols. This is a nice thing to think about, but it will
never happen. If you put people from all of these religions into a house and tell them to live
and “exist” together, they simply can’t, unless they compromise on their own religious
requirements.
There are also arguments that Jesus Christ is only “one of many” ways to get to Heaven. “All
religions lead to Heaven,” they espouse. Again, while this sounds nice, it is not the truth. In
fact, some religions don’t even believe that there is a Heaven. Furthermore, some people
think that we can simply hold diverse opinions over such [eternal] matters. In essence, they
once again suggest that Jesus is simply one of many “ways” to God. However, if everything
we hold to are “opinions” then my “way/truth” is just as valid as your “way/truth.” The
trouble with this mindset is that we cannot all be correct. As pointed out by Ravi Zacharias,
is that “Truth, by definition, excludes.” The focus and object of one’s faith should be on
something more than just an opinion. And, last I checked, “opinions” are not firm
foundations that provide eternal salvation.
Digging deeper, we need to look at the truth claims by the individual religious figures and
whether or not these claims were actually validated. Realizing that an exhaustive look into
every single aspect of each religion and religious figure would be, well, exhausting, I want to
keep things simple.
In a nutshell, let’s compare Jesus Christ’s basic claims versus all other religious figures.
Jesus claimed to be God. All other religious figures didn’t make this claim. They were
simply prophets, Yogis, or other religious teachers whose claims were fallible. Jesus claimed
to have died and was resurrected again. All other religious leaders did not make this claim
and are still dead. Furthermore, there is also the uniqueness of Jesus Christ and the Messianic
prophecies.
The Old Testament prophesies that there will be, one day, the coming Messiah, the Savior of
the world. However, these Messianic prophecies do not directly mention the name of this
Messiah. And, please keep in mind that many of the prophecies were made hundreds of years
prior to the birth of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 53:5-7 (NIV) states, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for
our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are
healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the
Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not
open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is
silent, so he did not open his mouth.”
This is the Old Testament prophesying about what would happen to the Messiah in the New
Testament. Obviously, this is exactly what happened to Jesus Christ. Okay, so this is only
one prophecy that came true and that Jesus Christ fulfilled. That might not fully convince
you. Therefore, let’s take a look at fourteen more Old Testament Messianic prophecies that
Jesus Christ fulfilled:
1. He was born in Bethlehem. Micah 5:2 --FULFILLED--> Matthew 2:5-6
2. Descendant of the seed of Abraham. Genesis 12:3. --FULFILLED--> Matthew 1:1-16
3. God would provide Himself a Lamb as an offering. Genesis 22:8 --FULFILLED-->John
1:29
4. From the tribe of Judah. Genesis 49:10 --FULFILLED-->Matthew 1:1-3
5. Preceded by a messenger to prepare His way. Malachi 3:1 --FULFILLED--> Matthew
11:7-11
6. Called out of Egypt. Hosea 11:1 --FULFILLED--> Matthew 2:15
7. He entered Jerusalem as a king riding on a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 --FULFILLED-->
Matthew 21:5
8. Sold for 30 pieces of silver. Zechariah 11:12 --FULFILLED--> Matthew 26:15; Luke 22:5
9. Spit on, smitten and scourged. Isaiah 50:6, 53:5 --FULFILLED--> Matthew 27:26, 30
10. Crucified with criminals. Isaiah 53:12 --FULFILLED--> Matthew 27:35
11. No bones broken. Psalm 34:20, Numbers 9:1 --FULFILLED--> John 19:33-36
12. His side would be pierced. Zechariah 12:10 --FULFILLED--> John 19:34

13. He would be buried with the rich. Isaiah 53:9 --FULFILLED--> Matthew 27:57, 60

Still not convinced that Jesus Christ is the one and only Messiah?
I really like how Dr. Peter Stoner details the fulfillment of prophecies by the coming
Messiah. Dr. Stoner (1888 – 1980) was a Professor Emeritus of Science at Westmont College
(Santa Barbara, CA) and author of the book Science Speaks (Moody Press, 1963). Dr. Stoner
set out to detail Jesus’ fulfillment of prophesies about the coming Messiah using various
mathematical probabilities to rule out “coincidence.”
Taken from his book, 1Science Speaks, Dr. Stoner states that, “we find that the chance that
any man might have lived down to the present time and fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in
1017
." That would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. In order to help us comprehend this
staggering probability, Stoner illustrates it by supposing that "we take 1017
silver dollars and
lay them on the face of Texas. They will cover all of the state two feet deep.
"Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state.
Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one
silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the
right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing these eight
prophecies and having them all come true in any one man."
Dr. Stoner considers 48 prophecies and says, "we find the chance that any one man fulfilled
all 48 prophecies to be 1 in 10157
. This number, written out, would be: 1 in
10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.”
Needless to say, the fulfillment of these Messianic prophecies [by Jesus Christ] was not a
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 11 of 16
coincidence. And, Dr. Stoner’s data is just to give an example of Jesus fulfilling only a few
of these prophecies. If you do further research, you will find that there were more than 300
Old Testament Messianic prophecies that were made and then fulfilled through Jesus' life,
death and resurrection.
As you can see, the Old Testament Messianic prophecies all point to, and were fulfilled by
only one person, Jesus Christ! The New Testament further details what Jesus Christ has done
for us:
1 Peter 2:23-25 (NIV) goes on to say, “When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not
retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted himself to Him who
judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in His body on the cross, so that we might die to
sins and live for righteousness; “by His wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like
sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”
John 14:6 (NIV) states, “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus does not state that he is “one of many ways”
to gain access to the Father/Heaven. He is the only way!
Acts 4:12 (NIV), states, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under
heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Jesus Christ’s sacrifice paid the price for all of my sins, past, present, and future. The scars in
His hands, feet, and side are a reminder to me that, through these scars and sacrifice, I will
have eternal life. For, unless there are scars, there could be no death. And, if there wasn’t any
death, there couldn’t be any resurrection. And without any resurrection there could not be
any forgiveness of sins, bridging us to eternal life with God.
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 12 of 16
There are those who simply cannot handle the exclusive truth claims of Jesus and will view
such claims as “intolerance.” There are also many who believe that “they” need to “do”
something in order to obtain eternal life in Heaven. They think that if they are baptized that
this act will “punch their ticket” into Heaven. Others believe that if they do enough “good
works” and go to church enough that God will allow them in simply due to the “goodness”
and “religiousness” that they have shown. Sadly, these views are not biblically accurate.
But all of this is nothing new. People back in Jesus’ day even questioned Jesus’ claims and
did their best to ascribe to doing good things. Luke 13:23-25 (NIV) states, “Someone asked
him [Jesus] “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said to them, “Make every
effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not
be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside
knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you
or where you come from.’”
Proverbs 14:12 (ESV) reminds us that, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end
is the way to death.”
We try and try and try to do enough to merit God’s favor. Yet, it will never be “good
enough” for God. There is nothing that we can do. And, even though we will try, Proverbs
14:12 reminds us that our ways will lead to death. So, what leads us to life? The Bible is very
clear about what this entails:
Romans 3:22-24 (NIV) states, “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all
who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that
came by Christ Jesus.”
Romans 10:8-10 (NIV) states, “But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your
mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 13 of 16
declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from
the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it
is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV) states, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and
this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”
As you can see from these verses, it’s all about “faith” and “belief.” However, it’s not just a
matter of having faith and belief in and of themselves. Anyone can have “faith.” I can have
faith in a tree. Yet, what does this tree claim, and will that claim save me and give me eternal
life? You see, it’s in regards to what [or who] your faith is in, the object of that faith that
makes the eternal difference between life and death; eternal life with God, or eternal
suffering apart from God.
…
1 John 5:10-13 (ESV) states, “Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in
himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in
the testimony that God has borne concerning His Son. And this is the testimony: that God
gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does
not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the
name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”
Acts chapter 2 details the Apostle Peter’s powerful preaching and power of the Holy Spirit at
Pentecost. Here is God at work in a powerful and miraculous way. People from all nations
and tribes are hearing the gospel message in their own native language. However, hearing the
message is only one side of the coin.
Acts 2:37 (ESV) shows us a powerful revelation to what happened after these people had
clearly heard the gospel message. This verse states, “Now when they heard this they were cut
to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
The people were convicted and moved to take an action. There is urgency here. They now
had a choice to make. And, this choice would have eternal consequences. Would they believe
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 14 of 16
and accept the gospel message? Or, would they simply say “no thank you?” It’s like showing
up at Christmas and someone presenting you with a wrapped gift. You can see the gift. You
know that it’s there. However, the gift won’t really mean anything and it won’t impact you
unless you reach out and accept it.
In the end, it’s not about what WE try to do, in order to enter Heaven; it’s about what was
done for us by Jesus Christ. It’s not about us – it’s about Him. It is not a matter of our doing;
rather, it is a matter of trust and belief in the One who has already done this for us. We need
to quit trying on our own, start believing, and allow Jesus Christ to take over.

Tully Blanchard is a retired pro wrestler who was once an infamous member of the dreaded
“Four Horsemen.” These four wrestlers were notorious and they dominated the NWA
wrestling organization in the late 1980s and 1990s. One of Tully’s most brutal wrestling
matches was in 1985 against an opponent named, “Magnum T.A.”
This match had a huge build-up and was a no-holds-bared, steel cage match. However, this
match had one stipulation: The loser had to state the words, “I quit!” Unfortunately for Tully,
he lost this match. While this “I quit” match was scripted and pre-determined, Tully had no
idea that he would have a real “I quit” match a few years later. Some could even argue that
this real life match was pre-determined as well.
On November 13, 1989, in real life, Tully Blanchard was at the end of his rope. His life was
a wreck, falling apart, and he was losing everything and everyone around him. This life that
he was living was far from the fame and glamour of a pro wrestling superstar. In fact, Tully
was in the midst of a real-life nightmare. On this day in 1989, Tully had another wrestling
match; but this time, it was with God.
In a video message, Tully stated the following: 2“I finally looked up, on my knees, I looked up
to heaven and I said “God, I quit!” He went on to state, “I had been taught to fight, fight,
fight – no matter what. I quit. I cannot take it anymore!...It all gets down to: Do you want to
“Wrestling with God’s Will” by Will Hoyler
Page 15 of 16
row your boat? Or do you want to let God row your boat?” Thus, Tully gave his life over to
Jesus Christ that day. He now shares at various venues all over the United States sharing his
testimony with others.
On that fateful day in 1989, Tully Blanchard quit and lost the greatest wrestling match of his
life. Yet, he gained the greatest victory anyone could ever have. He gained eternal life in
Heaven with God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Tully understood the gospel message
and chose to give up and give his life over to God. What’s more, Tully gained new life and a
new purpose for his life here on earth. He is a new man, a new creation, and his life is now
eternally secure!
The gospel message is God’s free gift and it is available to all mankind. God loved you so
much that He was willing to sacrifice His one and only Son [Jesus Christ] to pay the penalty
for your sins and mine. Jesus was the sacrificial Lamb who paid the price for us so that we
could be presented to God as a spotless bride. And yet, Jesus rose again on the third day,
conquering sin and death in order to wipe out all of our sins and provide the one and only
bridge [way] that leads to eternal life in Heaven.
In closing, I want to reiterate to you the Acts 2:37 verse. However, I have revised the
question, just to make it a bit more personal. This is the most important question that you
