I take great joy in the celebrations coming up as I’m sure most of you do too. So I want to say a few words about the first one – Halloween or Hallowe’en or All Hallows Eve. No – Halloween is not evil. It is not the Devil’s birthday or anything else like that. It is a holiday that began as a source of comfort for those who believed that the separation between the living and dead was particularly “thin” at that time of year. It was thought that souls could pass more easily from the dead to visit the living. Scary costumes kept them away! When I was a seminarian my supervising priest held an All Hallows’ Eve service with a costume party. We decorated the church with a skeleton in the Bishop’s throne and another in the pulpit. (I’m sure there are those who think the pulpit is frequently occupied with something just as exciting!) This was not done to make fun of the church, but to acknowledge, as the early, medieval, and Renaissance church did, that life, death, and life after death are facts of our lives as people of God. The All Hallows’ Eve service from the Episcopal Book of Occasional Services includes a reading from I Samuel regarding Saul’s visit with the Witch of Endor. In an Anglican church in Dublin, a human skull sits on the floor, right in front of the pulpit. There’s a reminder of our human frailty! Traditionally, the idea behind dressing up as ghosts and witches was to scare off evil spirits in preparation for our celebration of the Saints. Nowadays we also celebrate the saints of our lives: those people we have known and loved and miss. We celebrate their beloved memory and rejoice that they are now with God in Heaven. When we say that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, we include them as witnesses of our ongoing life here on earth and trust that they will welcome us on our last journey to be with God in Heaven. How does all of this work? We have no idea! But we trust as we trust in God’s eternal and unconditional love for all of us. Our human visions of Satan and hell and evil spirits are our way of coping with the unexplainable things in this world that frighten us. We should value our God-given abilities to cope and enjoy our God-given imaginations. Shakespeare had it right when he wrote, “There are more things in heaven and earth, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” There are things we cannot explain, that simply reinforce the truth that God is God and we’re not! At around All Hallows’ Eve or Hallowe’en as we like to call it, we celebrate the unexplainable, even the scary, acknowledging our God-given humanity and our place in God’s creation. This year we will, as most Episcopal churches do, combine the celebration of All Souls and All Saints and observe that celebration at both our Saturday & Sunday services on November 5 & 6. Please bring a picture or pictures of the departed saints of your life and we will place them on the altar to remember and honor them. As our hymn says, “For all the saints…” Blessings, Mother Susan+

“We Love Our Church”

A Letter from Mother Susan And now, as we enter October, presenting, (with great fanfare!) the HOLIDAYS!! My husband Bradley works in retail at the Pier 1 store in Deptford. He is acutely aware of the holidays. When Christmas shipments come in before Halloween he bristles, grins and bears it. We have a rule at our house. No Christmas decorations or music before Thanksgiving is OVER! Every holiday gets it full due. Now on the other hand, some families wait until Christmas Eve day to put up their Christmas tree. Church History Display

I hope that you have been enjoying the varying exhibits in the glass case in our Parrish Hall. They are items that comprise our collective Good Shepherd Family History! There have been many pictures of past church dinners and picnics and past Sunday School Curriculum. Do any of you remember using some of the curriculum that is being displayed right now? We have also had some very old prayer books and Church Seasons Dolls!

If you have anything that you would like to share with your church family, please let me know. I will be careful with your items and they will be returned to you when the exhibit ends.

Thank you so much! Ellie Dunn

OUR PRAY-ERS

MINISTRY Each Sunday during Communion time, our team of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We have now expanded this meaningful ministry to our Saturday evening Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm.

After you receive Holy Communion, if you want/need additional prayers, there will be a team of Pray-ers in the front of the Church who are willing to pray with you. These prayers can be offered in joy for a Blessing you have received, or can be to help ease a burden which lies on your heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful ministry of our parish. All prayers are confidential.

Prayer Shawl/Caring Hands Ministry

Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crocheted or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other Tuesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them.

I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere.

If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood.

A Partnership with

Mannino’s Cucina Italiana

Vito Mannino (owner of Mannino’s Cucina Italiana) has agreed to a partnership with the Church of the Good Shepherd. Please notify your server that you are a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd before placing your order. The restaurant is open Monday thru Thursday and Sunday from 11:00AM until 9:00PM and Friday and Saturday from 11:00AM until 10:00PM. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings. The food is excellent!! Your support of this partnership will be greatly appreciated!!

INQUIRERS’ CLASS

OCTOBER'S INQUIER'S class will be a bit different - on Sunday, October 2, we will have a session titled "Finding Joy in Aging". Growing old is not an easy thing. Actually it can be downright frightening to many. Obviously God planned it as a part of our human journey, but what purpose does it serve in our relationship to God? What is the spirituality of old age? What can we do to make it a better experience? How can you be helpful to your aging parents? How can we help each other find ways to not only cope better, but be joyful? This session will be held in the Choir Room following the 10 a.m. service at11:30 a.m. All are invited!

Beginning Sunday, November 6 the Inquirer's Group will begin a new study. "Embracing Emergence Christianity - Phyllis Tickle on the “Church's Next Rummage Sale." Author, historian and keen cultural observer Phyllis Tickle invites us to join her in examining the changing face of Christianity and culture. Phyllis surveys two thousand years of Western history, identifying the great upheavals that occur in Western culture and Christianity every 500 years. The last was the Great Reformation of the 1500's. The next is happening now. Former Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefforts Shori states "Where do you believe God is Leading? Tickle takes us on a pastoral journey, of which we cannot see the end detail, but into which the Spirit continues to invite us. This is an invitation to be disturbed, moved out of our comforts and into the new thing God is doing among us. This is the Jesus road, that always leads out of death to resurrection.“

Please note: We are now looking to raise funds for Parish Hall air conditioning. While we now have a less expensive estimate if we plan to install the equipment in January, we need to raise 3K to reach our goal. Please give thoughts to helping us make our hope of having coffee hour in a cool environment for next summer.

Contemplative Prayer Time Before Our Worship Services

For those who seek a time for quiet prayer on Saturdays and Sundays, from now on Mother Susan will open the church on Saturdays at 4:30 PM for the 5:30 PM service. We ask that 4:30 to 5:15 be a quiet prayerful time. Likewise, for Sundays, she will be in the Church at 9 AM for a quiet time from 9 to 9:30.

We ask that all who come early to church honor these times as times for quiet prayer and contemplation.

Pitman – Glassboro CROP Hunger Walk (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty)

It's that time of year again. The air is crisp, the leaves are falling and the CROP Walk is upon us. Sunday October 16th is the date. Hopefully you will mark your calendar and join us for either a 1 mile or 5 mile walk in an effort to curb hunger. If you are unable to walk and would like to contribute to someone who is walking or to the Good Shepherd team that would be greatly appreciated too. If you Google on your computer or phone Pitman-Glassboro CROP Hunger Walk you can donate on line to either an individual or the team. It's an easy and quick way to contribute. Of course you can also always give a walker a check or cash. Let's set a goal of $3,000.00 this year and 27 walkers. Thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any questions please contact Gail Morton or Connie Parent.

ST. FRANCIS DAY

October 2

We are planning to have our annual Blessing of the Pets, St. Francis Day Service on Sunday,

October 2nd at 4pm in the Church Courtyard (or in the Parish Hall if raining).

Each year we thank our Lord for the gift of our pets. We sing to them, we pray for them, we

ask God to protect and keep them safe. Don’t miss it! Treats for everyone!

Congratulations to Deb Prieto

For over thirty years, Gloucester County women’s organizations have recognized women for their outstanding contributions to their professional field, humanitarianism, and contributions to the community. In the past several years, the honorees were nominated and selected by the Gloucester County Commission for Women and the Gloucester County branch of the American Association of University Women.

Our own Deb Prieto has been selected to receive a 2016 Woman of Achievement Award for dedicating her professional skills to improving the lives of children and their families. As a pediatric ophthalmologist she has improved or preserved the eyesight of many, many children who have the potential for richer, fuller lives because of the care they received at Deb’s capable hands.

We at Good Shepherd know that Deb is a truly dedicated Christian who gives freely of her time and talents to the Church. Her big smile, good humor, grace, and faith serve as inspirations to the whole Good Shepherd family.

Recipients of the Awards will be honored at a dinner and ceremony at Auletto’s Caterers on Thurs., Oct. 13th. Please let Deb, Maryanne, or Sue Dixon know if you would like to receive a ticket. Proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for Gloucester County women.

Halloween Treating in the Courtyard

Do you live somewhere where no one comes to your door to “Trick or Treat”? Would you like to see fun costumes and have fun with your GS friends? Come to the GS Courtyard on October 31, Halloween, with your treats! We will be offering “Treating in the Courtyard” (or in the Parish Hall if it rains) complete with treats and apples and hot cider and Mother Susan in costume. You don’t want to miss that! Bring your treats! Bring your kids! Bring your grandkids! Anytime between 4 and 8 PM.

ALL SAINTS’ DAY

November 6, 2016

We are planning to hold our All Saints’ Day Services on Saturday & Sunday, Nov. 5th & 6th.

This is the special day that the church sets aside for us to remember those people who we have loved, those who have touched our lives in special ways, who are no longer with us. They live now with our Lord.

If you would like the names of those whom you would like to be remembered by name at the Altar that day please fill out the attached form and return it to the Church Office or e-mail them to [email protected] by October 24th.

Names to be remembered:

Homecoming Sunday

HOMECOMING SUNDAY was VERY SPECIAL! Welcome back from wherever you were! The pictures below show our intrepid cooks and servers, Jeff Snodgrass and Wayne Szalma serving our folks hot dogs and all the fixings.

Lori Bathurst and Pat Braidwood – We Are So Grateful for You!

Good Shepherd is so grateful for the years of work and service given to all of us by Lori Bathurst, Director, and Pat Braidwood, Assistant Director, who led the Sunday School for many years. We thanked them on Homecoming Sunday with flowers and the beginning of a children’s library in their names. The amount of work they put in, the love and dedication they have shown cannot be matched by any expression of gratitude we can offer. We can only say “Thank You and May God Continue to Bless you

Both!” We are also grateful that they will continue to support our Sunday School by teaching and offering special programs.

Look for more news about our Sunday School and our newly “refreshed “ rooms in our next issue!

THE FOOD PANTRY

We have changed our approach for collecting food donations for the Pitman Food Pantry. Each week we will be collecting a different food item. We will announce the upcoming needed food item each week in the trifold. Also we will have a monthly list in the Crook.

Food donations for October are: 10/1 & 2 - Soup 10/8 & 9 - Mac & Cheese 10/15 & 16 - Jelly 10/22 & 23 - Tuna 10/29 & 30 - Pancake Mix

All donations are greatly appreciated and accepted.

The Pitman Food Pantry is also in need of volunteers to help on Tuesday evenings to give out food. They are open on even dated Tuesdays each month from 6pm – 7pm.
