“Welcome!” is a greeting repeated each Sunday at the beginning of service. As we have worshiped together online, I have felt welcomed by members of New Life through their comments and encouragements. I have appreciated the hospitality I have been shown. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in your midst. “Welcome!” is an attitude as well as a greeting. In whatever ways we come together, helping others feel welcome is an art that cultivates health in relationships. Hospitality begins with a seed of God’s grace, planted within, which grows into an accepting outlook. Once begun, it can become contagious. Welcome and hospitality, however, never happen magically or automatically. Sin, flaws, fears, and real personal wounds can make it difficult to stay open to others. It’s possible to get hurt in welcoming others. Jesus experienced this. John, writer of the fourth gospel says, “he came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.” (John 1:11 NIV). Nevertheless, Jesus kept his heart open to all as he hung dying on the Cross. For those who had crucified him, he prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Jesus gave his life to establish God’s grace and forgiveness on earth among people. Now risen from death, he also now extends his open, compassionate heart to all. His welcome is what counts. His welcome is unconditional. As surely as he lives, he welcomes all. Nothing we do will earn it. It is pure gift. God has given to all - - to the whole world without exception - - the grace of Jesus. Grace alone is how we are able to welcome others with the same forgiveness that Jesus has given to each and all. Although during the pandemic we have to be together at a distance, we pray, learn, listen and, encourage one another. As we do, let’s remember that God is calling us through God’s gospel (good news of grace in Jesus). Let’s stay aware that through that gospel, God continually works to create and sustain among us an atmosphere of welcome. See you online, Pastor Schwertlich

Thoughts for Times Like These

Peter had a temper, David had an affair, Noah got drunk, Jonah ran from God, Paul was a murderer, Gideon was insecure, Miriam was a gossiper, Martha was a worrier, Thomas was a doubter, Sarah was impatient, Elijah was moody, Jacob was a cheater, Moses stuttered, Zaccheus was short, Abraham was old, and Lazarus was dead....

Now, can God use you or not?- God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the CALLED!

Hello, New Life Church family,

Thanks for taking the time to read this newsletter for September. I am totally shocked the summer of 2020 is over. I guess a part of me really thought that some kind of normalcy would have returned by now, but I was being short-sighted and naïve. Please continue to wear your masks and practice social distancing and stop making unnecessary trips. If you have been watching any of the Sunday morning Facebook live streams, you’ll notice that I consciously take off my mask before the children’s sermon while on camera. I do this because I want you and the kids especially to see what I am trying to practice what I preach. Thanks for participating in the Back Pack Blessing this past Sunday. Thanks to our Sunday School teachers for their years of faithful service: Aimee Castillo, Mary Ann Marcha, Julia Sweet, Lorraine Walls and our wonderful adult teachers (Christal Thompson, the Patschkes and Pastor Bill). As I mentioned last month, we are looking for a suitable Sunday School Superintendent. Please talk to me or Rudy if the Lord is moving on your heart and mind to lead in this capacity. Please pray about it for several weeks, at least. Finally, you may have heard or read that the 2021 ELCA Youth Gathering in Minneapolis past been postponed to 2022 in July so I was really, really, really happy to hear about that since that had to be the right decision. Also, it will give us a lot more time to fundraise as well as save money since the youth group has completely changed with the graduation of our high school seniors and their Sunday School attendance. Now that we have a new generation of students, I really hope that you as parents and your kids will make Sunday School your priority instead of the 10 other activities that happen on Sundays. In whatever way that you have been able to worship as a family or do Faith 5 or engage in any kind of family worship, please continue to keep up the good work. I realize that this is challenging and difficult, of course. Brazen it through! Parents, as always, you can do the following:

1) Read the Bible or do devotions together at least 2X a week,

2) pray together at every opportunity and

3) come to worship on a weekly basis.

Sincerely,

Sang Kim Director for Youth and Family Faith Formation

Thank You! From Church Council & Staff

To all members and ‘friends’ for stepping in and supporting “your” church in this crazy time.

On August 28,1993, The Evangelical Church of America (ELCA) adopted a social statement, Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope, and Justice, at the Churchwide Assembly in Kansas City, Missouri. I quote here from the prologue to that statement. “Christian concern for the environment is shaped by the Word of God spoken in creation, the Love of God hanging on a cross, the Breath of God daily renewing the face of the earth. We of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are deeply concerned about the environment locally and globally, as members of this church and as members of society. Even as we join the political, economic, and scientific discussion, we know care for the earth to be a profoundly spiritual matter. As Lutheran Christians, we confess that both our witness to God’s goodness in creation and our acceptance of caregiving responsibility have often been weak and uncertain.” As Christians and as Lutherans, it is incumbent upon us in our daily devotions to consider prayerfully and with gratitude God’s gifts to us through his creation and our responsibilities to be good stewards of our planet and all that God has created. Twenty-seven years later, it is now more urgent than ever to act with care to protect and preserve that which God has provided. Two months ago, when I reported on the current Stella Roberts Recycle Center activities. I was in error when I said they were no longer accepting moving boxes, paint, newspaper or crushed glass. I should have said they were no longer giving out those items. They are accepting everything they accepted before the pandemic, but because they are currently asking all comers to wear masks and stay in their cars, they are not currently

distributing any usable items. Keep Pearland Beautiful is still planning to have its Fall Plant Thyme Fundraiser in October, but it will be a virtual event and a bit different from previous years due to the pandemic. Details will be forthcomings next month.

There are Sunday School classes for everyone (youth & adults).

Take time for Life-Long Learning!

New Life is looking for a Sunday School Superintendent. Please contact Sang or Rudy if the Lord is moving on your heart and mind to lead in this capacity.

New Life

NEEDED

Sunday School will be held online via Zoom. More info TBA

Hello, my name is Aimee Castillo and I teach the Pre-K through 1st grade Sunday School class at New Life Lutheran Church. Please read if you have a child who will be a student in my class. For now, we will be meeting remotely, until further notice. We will learn about important stories from the Bible. Usually, I teach it on a two year rotation, but this is my last year to teach the class, so I have combined the Old and New Testament into one calendar school year. To be able to follow along with the weekly lesson, your child will need to use their Spark Story Bible they received when they were 3. If you do not have this, please contact the church to get a copy. I will email you once a week with the upcoming story and attach a craft. It is my hope that while we are remote, you are able to read the story with your child, and complete the craft together. You will need a printer to be able to print, but if you can't, I can mail you copies if you provide your address. Again, this is only for while

we are not meeting in person. I am looking forward to teaching your child this year! If you have any questions, you can email me, or call, or text me. Thank you and God Bless. --
