Miguel Nin, Vice President of Corporate Sales and Operations HC Cigars/ Esteli Cigars S.A., Cigar Sales and Manufacturing

OnBusinessDevelopment:

“The most important part of the cigar industry not often spoken about is the agricultural side, which focuses on the growing of the product and the actual manufacturing of the cigar itself. The tobacco is first grown by seeds into small pods then planted into the earth. Incredibly it only takes three months for the tobacco to be ready for picking, which is done from the bottom of the plant up to the top in five different cuts. The next process is the drying of the tobaccoinadryinghouseforaperiodoftwoweeksatwhichtimewebeginthe(pilon)processsothenitcanbeginthefermentationprocessorcuring.Thelongerthetobaccoiscuredthebetter.Whatpeopledon’tunderstandistheamount of time it takes for us to get our product to the consumers plus the economic strain on the grower – and that’sbeforethetobaccoisreadytobeusedfortheconstructionofacigar.Thisprocessissimplyforonetypeoftobacco, and I utilize five different types of tobacco for growing as a producer. In order for me to produce a decent cigar it could take a minimum of six years in total to have a product for my buyers - then the package, labeling and distribution process can begin. I appreciate my business partners at the DeLand Chamber for giving me the chance to provide a different outlook and appreciation of smoking a fine cigar.”

To all long ashes and great smokes,

DeLand-based Mainstreet Community Bank of Florida announced that its Holly

Hill banking center — its first in East Volusia — is now open. “It’s a natural pro-

gression for us,” said Ben Flowers, Mainstreet’s CEO, of the decision to expand

to east Volusia County. “We have several customers who own businesses on the

east side and businesses who do business in both East and West Volusia.” The

bank branch, at 1812 Ridgewood Ave., just south of the Holly Hill Publix and

Sonic Drive-In, officially opened its doors on May 20. It employs seven workers

and is led by Mike Thomas, the bank’s East Volusia market president, and Arthur

Campbell, senior vice president and commercial lender. Mainstreet Community

Bank also operates four banking centers in West Volusia: two in DeLand and two

in Orange City.

Starke Elementary Principal to be honored

DELAND— Dwayne Copeland, first-year principal at Starke Elementary, has been selected to receive the West Volusia Branch NAACP “Difference Maker of the Year” award. He was chosen for his outstanding efforts in turning around Starke Elementary from a struggling school to a thriving community school. Mr. Copeland, along with his faculty and staff, are working hand-in-hand with the community, which is rallying around him by pledging their support for the school.

This year, the school revived its Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Through the PTA, parents and community members became involved with functions such as Muffins For Mom, Doughnuts With Dad and Grandparents Day. The Starke PTA also helped the community celebrate the holiday season with Koala Winterfest, which was held at the school, and with a float in the DeLand Christmas Parade.

Mr. Copeland along with his staff helped encourage the students’ love for reading by hosting a family reading night after school. They also celebrated literacy week with daily activities, including a Book Buffett held after school and a character dress up day.

Reading isn’t the only thing Starke Elementary is celebrating with students this year. Starke is enriching science with field studies at the Sanford Zoo, Orlando Science Center, Canaveral National Seashore and by growing a pizza garden on campus. The math team also encouraged the love of math by hosting a math day complete with a math bee competition.

Mr. Copeland is working hard to make Starke Elementary a success story. He will be presented the “Difference Maker of the Year” award at the West Volusia Branch NAACP’s 25th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Friday, June 5, at the New Hope Baptist Church, Deltona.

intersection where the private sector and public sector come together to do business, for a Chamber of Commerce. We will be closer to the core area to support our business partners at Main Street DeLand Association, West Volusia Tourism Authority, and our new space is a perfect fit with our Chamber Team to allow us to continue our mission, while providing us vital access to new tools and support for new and existing businesses in the community. We consider this move the creation of “a one-stop shop”, which will focus on encouraging new businesses to visit the DeLand Chamber, collect information on how to open a business, make the necessary connections with our existing business resources, assist in obtaining a business license, and even get them connected to the necessary utilities and city services in one setting.

Now with the advent of smart phone technology, the Chamber will be dramatically changing the way visitors and businesses interact during their visits to the city. Whether it’s through new media or in-person visits, the Chamber will always be an important source of providing answers, and matching people to business resources throughout the region. With the City of DeLand’s commitment to local business growth and our Chambers proactive approach to helping existing businesses continue to be successful we will make a Great Team!

With all of this in the works we will also expand into a new location in Orange City (TBD). All of these efforts are aimed at support existing industry programming and economic development in DeLand, Orange City and throughout West Volusia!

Please come by and take a tour week of June 1st to welcome the Chamber Team and Thank them for the wonderful job they did on moving us to the New Location!

Sincerely the Deland Area Chamber/Orange City Alliance President, Michelle “Missy” Chaves
