“Truly This Man Was The Son Of God!”
Mark 15:33-39
And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a
sponge with sour wine,
put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple
was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing
him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the
Son of God!”
And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole
land until the ninth hour.
Exodus 10:22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward
heaven, and there was pitch darkness in all the land of Egypt three days.
Isaiah 13:9-10 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel,
with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it.
For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the
sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema
sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
The Bible has its corridors of mystery which refuse to yield their secrets to anyone, even the most brilliant theologians. But nowhere
in all the Bible do we encounter any mystery that so staggers the mind and shocks the
Christian consciousness as this tortured cry from the lips of our dying Savior. This
awesome, haunting protest screamed into the darkened heavens brings us to the heart
of the atonement. Here is the “crucifixion within the crucifixion.” – Richard Allen Bodey
Habakkuk 1:13 You who are of purer eyes than to see
evil and cannot look at wrong
Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—
for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”
His scream was the scream of the damned- for us!
– R. C. Sproul
The good news is that God himself has decreed a way to satisfy the demands of His justice without condemning the whole
human race. Hell is one way to settle accounts with sinners and uphold his justice. But there is another way. The
wisdom of God has ordained a way for the love of God to deliver us from the wrath of God without compromising the justice of
God. And what is this wisdom? The death of the Son of God for sinners!
– John Piper
And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it
to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him
down.” Eloi (or Eli) They assume he’s calling
for Elijah- they have no idea that he has just fully born the Father’s wrath for sin!
And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.

Ripped from Top To Bottom- God does away with the curtain and the OT system of approaching Him.
Hebrews 9:11-14 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have
come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with
hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy
places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal
redemption.
For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to
serve the living God.
And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he
breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
