School Attendance Information For Parents Regular attendance at school allows children to progress both academically and socially. It is a pre-requisite for future success and ensures students the widest possible choice when deciding on future careers and lifestyles.

The Education Reform Act, 1990, states that caregivers are required by law to ensure that children in their care, aged 6 to 15 years, attend school regularly and that they provide the school with an explanation for the absence within 7days.

Schools are for children. Regular attendance ensures that carers and students get the most out of school. By working together we will be able to make sure that school is a safe, happy and enjoyable place for all and that student’s future success is maximised. (NOTE: eFORM absentee notes can be found on the SkoolBag app or via the SkoolBag App Tab on the school website. Alternatively you can send a note in with your child. Also, blank Yellow absentee notes can be found in the office or with the class teacher). Sick Bay Monitor For the information of new parents/carers to Beechwood Public School we have a close circuit camera installed in our sick bay room attached to a monitor in the office to enable observation of sick students. This will greatly assist in keeping our students safe and secure whilst they are unwell at school. Changes to Normal Travel Routines Much confusion, anxiety and concern can be placed on students and staff if changes to normal travel routines are not received in the written form.

If for some reason a child has to vary their normal travel mode, parents are requested to inform the school of these changes in writing.

Staff have been advised that all children are to travel via their normal methods UNLESS written notification from the parents is received. All previous on-going changes of routine for 2018 have been discarded. If you wish your child to have a regular change of routine each week on a particular day or days, you will need to inform us again in writing. Also, if you wish to give permission for another person to pick your child/ren up from school at any time, please advise in writing. (NOTE: Blue Change of Routine proforma notes are available at the school office. You can also complete the eFORM that can be found on the SkoolBag App or under the SkoolBag App Tab on the school website. TRACEY BROMFIELD Relieving Principal FRIDAY FUNDRAISING Chicken Sausages on bread may be purchased at $2.00 each and Bulla Splits $2.00 each. Half a sausage in slice of bread available for $1.00. Slushies are available ($2.00 each) and poppers/flavoured milk ($2.00 each).

The first 2019 School Parliament Friday Fundraising Canteen commenced last Friday.

Orders are taken on Friday mornings on the school back veranda by designated School Parliament members as per above prices.

Mr Noel Tape is the overseer for the purchasing of supplies for the Friday Fundraising Canteen again in 2019 and parent volunteers help out cooking sausages and serving yoghurt ice-creams and drinks. ALL profits from the Friday Fundraising Canteen go towards bus costs for every class for excursions. Over $3,500 was raised in 2018! A great effort!

New parents or carers who are able to help out as a volunteer for just 2 hours on any Friday, could you please place on the slip that follows, the dates of any Friday/s you prefer and return to Mrs Reid or alternatively phone the office on 6585 6136.

If we get a few helpers it may mean only having to come in once a term. There is a detailed instruction sheet available outlining what to do so if you would like to have a copy before deciding, just ask at the office. Your help is very much needed and appreciated! (Please complete volunteer slip and roster below).

Special Religious Education and Special Education in Ethics Participation Letter

A feature of the public education system in NSW is the opportunity to provide time in class for education in ethics, faith and morality from a religious or non-religious perspective at the choice of parents.

The school website https://beechwood-p.schools.nsw.gov.au provides information on these options to support parent/carer choice.

A parent/carer may at any time notify the school in writing that they wish to change their decision. Students will continue the same arrangement as the previous year, unless a parent/carer has requested a change in writing. For more information about Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE), including the list of approved providers, please visit: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/learning-across-the-curriculum/religion-and-ethics

For your convenience, there is a slip below if you are new to Beechwood Public School and have not already notified us of your preference for these special classes or if you wish to change your child’s option for either Special Religious or Ethics Education.

Environmental Education At school we are modelling the behaviours that we are teaching the students. The students are learning about sustainability and recycling and have learnt about sorting their rubbish.

To support this we have introduced Return and Earn into the school. If your family would like to support the school by collecting your plastic and glass bottles, aluminium cans and poppers, Mrs Mac has some bags that can be given to your child to take home for your collection. These bags can then be returned full, and the school will receive 10c for each container. Thank you in advance, Mrs Mac

YOUR P&C AT WORK

Welcome to Beechwood Public School for 2019. Here at BPS we have a small but extremely active and inclusive P&C at BPS which provides many essential services to the school and the community. Below is a small overview of what the P&C was able to achieve in 2018. What the P&C Provides Every Year In 2017 the P&C has again been able to provide many important resources and services to your school. Every year we provide: $150 per class per term so that teachers can purchase resources specifically needed by their

class

$200 each term to the library to purchase new books and resources

School Hats – we provide a new school hat to EVERY new student

An engraved Parker Pen to every Year 6 student for a graduation gift

We sponsor the Citizenship Award at the Year 6 Graduation, support SASS Appreciation Week and World Teacher’s Day and numerous other activities within the school.

We recognise all of those students who represent the school by providing embroidery to all of the representative’s school shirts.

The Canteen is run 100% by P&C volunteers, parents and carers, providing your child with regular healthy canteen options. The canteen also caters for and oversees numerous school events including Grandparent’s Day, Celebration of Learning Assembly, Kindergarten Orientation and the Beechwood PS Athletics Carnival to name a few. The canteen committee maintains all of the canteen equipment and ensures that we continue to meet the standards required by the Healthy Canteen Guidelines.

BOOSH (Beechwood Out of School Hours – after school child care service) is an integral part of the Beechwood School community and provides a much needed service to families at our school. This service employs three staff and is overseen by a 100% volunteer management committee who ensure that we meet all state and national child care requirements and accreditations and that we continue to operate at a high standard. We are excited that this year we have been able to offer music lessons through our After-School Care Program (BOOSH).

P&C NEWS Welcome back for 2019!

2018 – EXPENDITURE ACHIEVEMENTS

The P&C’s major initiative for 2018 was to purchase two new interactive smart TV’s, these were installed into the classrooms in term 4. Some of the other goals we were able to achieve in 2018 included: installing block out blinds in both of the new demountable classrooms, the purchase of two full sets of netball uniforms for our school teams, a new freezer in the canteen along with plumbing repairs and the installation of a washing machine enabling us to was sporting team uniforms and second hand stock. With our funding Mr Newell was able to build a stand for athletics medal ceremonies, we purchased textas for all classrooms, level readers for the senior classes and full sets of home readers for the junior classes. We also invested $1000 towards the school garden. We also supported the year 6 class in their efforts to raise funds for drought relief.

EVENTS The P&C held several events throughout 2018. These have included a Mother’s Day Stall and a Father’s Day Breakfast. As well as running a weekly canteen we have catered for numerous school events including Grandparents day and the Athletics carnival. We are a regular contributor to the Pappinbarra Grown and Gathered Markets and the Beechwood Billycart Derby. Our fundraising committee ran a number of successful fundraising events including a Lamington Drive and Crazy Camel.

Our largest and most successful event for 2018 was the Beechwood Christmas Event. This was a great night for the school and the community. Funds raised from this will be used to directly benefit the school community.

MEETINGS and MEMBERSHIP

The P&C would like to invite you to join our committee in 2019. Your role can be as large or as small as you are able to contribute. The more contributors we have, the more ideas and the lighter the load for all members.

Meetings are held monthly in the library on a Tuesday night from 6pm. Meetings generally run for around 1 hour and dates are advertised in the Bulletin, considering school holidays we hold approximately 8 meetings per year.

Membership is $1 per annum. Membership takes effect at the conclusion of a general meeting. Please like our Beechwood Public School P&C Facebook page for regular updates.
