February 3, 2019 - Order of Worship

TIME OF REFLECTION

“The doctrine of the cross is the sun in the system of truth. It is seen by its own light, and throws light upon every other subject.”

~John Newton (1725-1807), Anglican clergyman and abolitionist “It should encourage us to duty that Christ will not quench the smoking flax, but blow on it till it flames. Some are loath to do good because they feel their hearts rebelling, and duties turn out badly. We should not avoid good actions because of infirmities attending them. Christ looks more at the good in them which he means to cherish than the ill in them which he means to abolish.”

~Richard Sibbes (1577-1635), English theologian in The Bruised Reed “It is the madness of this ‘word of the cross’ that compels us to take it seriously. No one can say that this was some pious invention, for the cross runs counter to all notions of piety. And no one can dismiss the message as mere self-promotion, for the early believers gained nothing from telling their story. There is something so absurd, so topsy-turvy about the Christian message that it gets under my skin. I am a Christian today because it has the ring of truth in it.”

~Vinoth Ramachandra, Sri Lankan writer and human rights advocate “To be a follower of the Crucified Christ means, sooner or later, a personal encounter with the cross. And the cross always entails loss.”

~Elizabeth Elliot (1926-2015), Christian author, speaker and missionary “The older I grow, the more I am drawn to preach much concerning the person, the atonement, the glory of the Savior, and the influence of the Holy Spirit. There are other truths, important in their places, but unless beheld through the medium of the cross, they have but a faint effect.”

~John Newton (1725-1807), Anglican clergyman and abolitionist

Worship through Praise and Adoration

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 116:1-7 (NIV)

LEADER: I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.

CONGREGATION: Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

LEADER: The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

CONGREGATION: Then I called on the name of the LORD: “O LORD, save me!”

LEADER: The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.

CONGREGATION: The LORD protects the simplehearted; when I was in great need, he saved me. Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.

COME PRAISE AND GLORIFY

(Bob Kauflin & Tim Chester)

Come praise and glorify our God, The Father of our Lord.

In Christ He has in heav’nly realms, His blessings on us poured.

For pure and blameless in His sight, He destined us to be.

And now we’ve been adopted through, His Son eternally.

CHORUS

To the praise of Your glory, To the praise of Your mercy and grace,

To the praise of Your glory, You are the God who saves.

Come praise and glorify our God,

Who gives His grace in Christ. In Him our sins are washed away,

Redeemed through sacrifice. In Him God has made known to us,

The myst’ry of His will. That Christ should be the head of all,

His purpose to fulfill. (CHORUS)

Come praise and glorify our God,

For we’ve believed the Word. And through our faith we have a seal,

The Spirit of the Lord. The Spirit guarantees our hope,

Until redemption’s done. Until we join in endless praise,

To God the Three in One. (CHORUS)

BEHOLD OUR GOD

(Jonathan Baird, Meghan Baird, Ryan Baird, Stephen Altrogge)

Who has held the oceans in His hands? Who has numbered every grain of sand? Kings and nations tremble at His voice.

All creation rises to rejoice.

CHORUS: Behold our God, seated on His throne.

Come, let us adore Him. Behold our King, nothing can compare,

Come, let us adore Him!

Who has given counsel to the Lord? Who can question any of His words?

Who can teach the one who knows all things? Who can fathom all his wondrous deeds?

(CHORUS)

Who has felt the nails upon His hands. Bearing all the guilt of sinful man? God eternal, humbled to the grave, Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign!

(CHORUS)

BRIDGE: You will reign forever! (Let Your glory fill the earth) You will reign forever! (Let your glory fill the earth) You will reign forever! (Let your glory fill the earth)

You will reign forever! (Let your glory fill) (CHORUS)

BE STILL MY SOUL

(Katharine von Schljegel, Jason Ingram, Kari Jobe)

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side: Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain: Leave to thy God to order and provide; In ev’ry change he faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heav’nly Friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake

To guide the future as he has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

In you I rest, in You I find my hope. In you I trust, You never let me go.

I place my life within your hands alone Be still, my soul.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hast’ning on When we shall be for ever with the Lord,

When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.

Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

In you I rest, in You I find my hope. In you I trust, You never let me go.

I place my life within your hands alone Be still, my soul.

CONGREGATIONAL SHARING & PRAYER – Tim Ball

Benevolence Offering for Local Needs: Our regular Benevolence Offerings are special collections above and beyond our regular giving to the church. The money received is then used in a variety of ways - 1) to help those with material needs within our church, 2) to help those with needs in the broader Upper Valley Community, and 3) to help those suffering loss in other parts of the world. In the past year, we have answered a significantly higher number of needs than in previous years, giving away over $16,000 to our Upper Valley neighbors. This has completely depleted our benevolence fund. Therefore, 100% of this offering will go to replenish CRC’s Benevolence Fund, so that we can continue to meet local needs. If you want to designate a gift for this special offering, please write “Benevolence” in the memo section of your check or on your giving envelope. You can also give online at www.christredeemerchurch.org under the giving menu.

GREETING TIME

*If you would like a Bible to use during the sermon, they are available in the back of the auditorium.

Worship through the Word SERMON – “Gospel-Centricity: The Gospel as the Center and Power for Everything”

– Pastor Don Willeman

SERMON PASSAGE – 1 Corinthians 1:17-31, 2:1-5 (NASB) – Faye Gillespie

1 Corinthians 1 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to

preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void.

18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.”

20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not

many mighty, not many noble; 27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28 and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, 29 so that no man may boast before God. 30 But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 2

1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

Worship through the Sacrament

CONFESSION OF FAITH: adapted from John 1:1-5

LEADER: What do you believe about the Gospel of Jesus? CONGREGATION: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of mankind. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not been able to stop it.

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER – Pastor Don Willeman

HOW ARE THE BREAD AND CUP DISTRIBUTED? The BREAD IS TAKEN INDIVIDUALLY when you receive it, as an expression of your personal faith in Christ. The CUP IS TAKEN TOGETHER after all have been served, as an expression of our corporate faith in Christ. After you have finished the cup, please place it in the pew rack in front of you. Gluten/allergen free communion bread is available in a box on the table at the back of the sanctuary.

MAY I RECEIVE COMMUNION TODAY? At CRC we welcome all believers in Christ to receive Holy Communion with us provided that they are 1) forsaking their sin and self-righteousness, and 2) trusting in Jesus alone for salvation. If you are not able to receive Communion today, please use this time to meditate on who Jesus is and what he has done for us, even using this as an opportunity to put your trust in him. If you feel that God is calling you to faith in his Son, perhaps the prayer below will be helpful to you as you seek him:

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Please guide me and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you, as I consider the reasons for doing so. Amen.

If you would like to talk to someone about becoming a Christian, please let the pastor, one of the elders, or the friend who brought you know. You may also inquire by completing the contact form on the back of the bulletin

and placing it in the offering box.

BEHOLD THE LAMB (COMMUNION HYMN)

(Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty, Stewart Townend)

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, Slain for us, and we remember

The promise made That all who come in faith

Find forgiveness at the cross. So we share in this Bread of Life,

And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of peace Around the table of the King.

The body of our Savior Jesus Christ,

Torn for you, eat and remember; The wounds that heal

The death that brings us life Paid the price to make us one.

So we share in this Bread of Life, And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of love Around the table of the King.

The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, Shed for you, drink and remember.

He drained death’s cup That all may enter in

To receive the life of God. So we share in this Bread of Life,

And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of grace Around the table of the King.

And so with thankfulness and faith we rise

To respond, and to remember Our call to follow

In the steps of Christ As His body here on earth.

As we share in His suffering, We proclaim Christ will come again! And we’ll join in the feast of heaven

Around the table of the King. ©2007 Thankyou Music (Admin. by EMI Christian

ON JORDAN’S STORMY BANKS

(Christopher Miner, Samuel Stennett)

On Jordan’s stormy banks I stand And cast a wishful eye

To Canaan’s fair and happy land Where my possessions lie.

All o’er those wide extended plains

Shines one eternal day There God the Son forever reigns

And scatters night away.

CHORUS: I am bound (I am bound) I am bound (I am bound)

I am bound for the promised land, I am bound (I am bound) I am bound (I am bound)

I am bound for the promised land.

No chilling winds nor pois’nous breath Can reach that healthful shore

Sickness, sorrow, pain and death Are felt and feared no more.

(CHORUS)

When shall I reach that happy place And be forever blest

When shall I see my Father’s face And in His bosom rest.

CHRIST REDEEMER CHURCH CORE VALUES Christ Changes Everything • Christ Mandates Our Message • Christ Glorifies God

Christ Causes Us to Value and Care for People • Christ Reorients Our Hearts • Christ Reconciles Us to One Another Christ Redeems All of Life • Christ is Victorious • Christ Causes Us to Look Outwardly

SPOTLIGHTED CORE VALUE FOR THIS WEEK

CHRIST CAUSES US TO VALUE AND CARE FOR PEOPLE We value the primacy of people over programs. At CRC we believe that Christ causes us to value and care for people. In other words,

we value the primacy of people over programs. In our evangelistic outreach as well as in our life as a church we are committed to being more concerned about our “neighbor” and “brother” than the success of our programs. We do not measure success merely by “numbers, nickels and noise” but by people adoring the grace of God and obeying the revealed will of God.

In addition, everything that is done in the church will be critiqued by this question: Does this move people toward maturity in Christ or does this merely foster an unhealthy dependence on leaders and programs? We desire that people neither become independent nor dependent. Rather, we desire a community of mature, interdependent disciples. We desire people who can be responsible for themselves and their own family’s spiritual needs while at the same time recognizing the biblical necessity of contributing to the building up of the whole body of Christ.

HOW CAN I GET CONNECTED AT CHRIST REDEEMER CHURCH? At CRC we welcome people from every background and every stage in their journey with Christ. CRC is comprised of people that are committed followers of Jesus as well as those just investigating. Wherever you might find yourself, there is a place for you at CRC. If you need help getting connected, just ask a friend, contact the church office or fill out the Contact Form on the last page of this bulletin.

Just Investigating: If you are just investigating the gospel of Christ, there are several points of connections you might find helpful:

• Worship: Every Sunday morning at 10:00AM, you’ll find ample opportunity to learn about Jesus and what He has done for us. • Sunday School: We offer classes for all ages including classes for adults. In these classes you are welcome to jump into the dialogue or just sit and

listen. More information is available on pg. 2 of this bulletin. • Various Other Ministries: For Men (Men’s Breakfasts, men’s small groups, retreats, etc.), Women (bible studies, retreats, etc.), Youth, Work Place

(e.g. work place Bible studies). For more information, see page 13 or contact the church office.

Desiring A Greater Level of Participation: If you are investigating what it means to be a Christian, or have been a Christian for a while but are new to CRC, we strongly recommend that you become a participant in the life of the community. Experiencing life in the body of Christ is the best way to learn what the gospel is all about. Here are two key opportunities:

• Sunday Service Rotation: At many churches, opportunities for personal involvement are limited. At CRC, however, we take a very different approach; we invite anyone who considers CRC their “church home” to serve and participate in the life of the body. One of the practical ways that we do this is to schedule every individual or family for a “service Sunday” approximately once every three months in order to assist the leaders in each of the various responsibilities (i.e. setup and takedown for the worship service, greeting, and the children’s ministries). Through this service rotation, we are not only working to accomplish these tasks, but also learning what it means to live together as the “family of God”.

• Community Groups: It is our belief and experience that a servant-hearted community is the essential fruit that grows from believing the gospel. “Christianity means community through Jesus Christ and in Jesus Christ” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer). Therefore, the backbone of CRC is a network of small groups, each designed to be a mini-Christian community. Comprised of 8 to 14 people, they meet regularly during the week in individual homes. Trained leaders who are given on-going support lead each group. The groups are open to both believers and seekers---to anyone who wishes to grow in their understanding and experience of the gospel. Through Bible study, prayer and serving others, participants are able to come to know and to experience life in Christ for themselves, at their own pace. If you would like to join a group, please contact the church office or ask a friend if you can attend theirs. If you consider CRC your “church home", you should make faithful participation in one of these groups a top priority.

Desiring To Become a Member: At CRC we take church membership very seriously. For a person to be a follower of Christ, we feel it is necessary to be

committed to a local church. If you have been a Christian for a long time but are new to CRC or if you have recently become a Christian, and would like to become a member, join us for our “Introduction to CRC” seminar that runs periodically or talk to Pastor Willeman.

Desiring To Lead And Serve Others: God calls many to be not merely faithful members in His church but also to serve the church through leadership. If you

have traveled the path outlined above but are still looking for something more, we’d love to talk to you about opportunities for developing leadership skills and serving.

HOW CAN I SERVE LOCALLY? At CRC we believe the primary way followers of Christ serve their community is in and through their local church. In addition to this commitment, we strongly encourage people to seek the betterment of life in the Upper Valley by supporting and serving organizations like the ones listed below. If you are interested in learning more, please contact the CRC office. CRC Opportunities: • Financial Giving: When you support CRC, you are “joining a team” committed to blessing the Upper Valley. The extensive service that CRC provides

to our community is supported by your donations. In addition, since the beginning of CRC, we have given away over $1,419,000 to other missions and charity, over $166,000 last year alone, with much of that going to local community efforts.

• Community Groups: Each of our small groups is encouraged to find ways that they can serve the community. Therefore, it is not surprising to find them serving community dinners, collecting food for the hungry, doing work projects for local charities, etc.

• Pioneering: If you have a vision for pioneering an unmet need, we’d love to talk to you. Please contact the church office. • Prayer: At CRC we do not underestimate the greatest power for good in our community, the gracious power of God. Therefore, in our worship, various

ministries and small groups, prayer for the work of God in our community is a priority.

Your Vocation: Have you ever considered your job as a way to worship Christ and serve your neighbor? The gospel, as it is properly understood and applied, produces the most conscientious workers. "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving" (Colossians 3:23-24). Imagine that! God counts your work as a doctor or dentist, electrician or engineer, carpenter or teacher, artist or accountant, mother or father, as service rendered to Christ. Indeed, the gospel elevates every aspect of our lives.

HOW CAN I SERVE GLOBALLY? CRC Opportunities: • Short and Long Term Missions: In the short history of CRC, we have sent out numerous individuals to do a variety of projects both long and short term.

Through our connections with Converge Worldwide Missions (BGC) and numerous other agencies, we have a network of missions and relief opportunities that stretch around the globe.

• Financial Giving: By financially supporting CRC, you are “joining a team" that is directly helping those in need around the world. As a matter of fact, CRC has recently averaged giving away 20% of its budget to support other charities and ministries, and aims to increase that percentage every year.

• Pioneering: If you have an interest in pioneering an unmet need, we’d love to talk to you. Contact: Pastor Willeman. • Prayer: At CRC we do not underestimate the greatest power for good in our world, the gracious power of God. Therefore, in our worship, various

ministries and small groups, prayer for the work of God in our world is a priority.

HOW CAN I GET SPIRITUAL HELP OR PRAYER? If you would like someone to pray for or with you, or need to talk to someone about spiritual issues, please consider the following: • Share your request with your Community Group. If you are not currently in one, we urge you to consider joining one. • See one of the Elders or Deacons listed at the top of page 13. • Write your prayer request at the bottom of the Contact Form at the back of the bulletin.

AN AFFIRMATION OF OUR FAITH Adopted by Converge Worldwide (Baptist General Conference) in 1951

1. The Word of God: We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. 2. The Trinity: We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons, that these are equal in every divine perfection, and that they execute distinct but harmonious offices in the work of creation, providence and redemption. 3. God the Father: We believe in God, the Father, an infinite, personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of each person, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ. 4. Jesus Christ: We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teachings. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal visible return to earth. 5. The Holy Spirit: We believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify, and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit indwells every believer in Christ, and that He is an abiding helper, teacher and guide. 6. Regeneration: We believe that all people are sinners by nature and by choice and are, therefore, under condemnation. We believe that those who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit. 7. The Church: We believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on a credible confession of faith, and associated for worship, work and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world. 8. Christian Conduct: We believe that Christians should live for the glory of God and the well-being of others; that their conduct should be blameless before the world; that they should be faithful stewards of their possessions; and that they should seek to realize for themselves and others the full stature of maturity in Christ. 9. The Ordinances: We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has committed two ordinances to the local church: baptism and the Lord's Supper. We believe that Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water into the name of the triune God. We believe that the Lord's Supper was instituted by Christ for commemoration of His death. We believe that these two ordinances should be observed and administered until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. 10. Religious Liberty: We believe that every human being has direct relations with God, and is responsible to God alone in all matters of faith; that each church is independent and must be free from interference by any ecclesiastical or political authority; that therefore Church and State must be kept separate as having different functions, each fulfilling its duties free from dictation or patronage of the other. 11. Church Cooperation: We believe that local churches can best promote the cause of Jesus Christ by cooperating with one another in a denominational organization. Such an organization, whether a regional or district conference, exists and functions by the will of the churches. Cooperation in a conference is voluntary and may be terminated at any time. Churches may likewise cooperate with interdenominational fellowships on a voluntary basis. 12. The Last Things: We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the eternal felicity of the righteous, and the endless suffering of the wicked.
