The Perry Christian First Christian Church Disciples of Christ

BLESSED BE THE “TITHE” THAT BINDS!!!

That “tithe” that binds sounds more like stewardship than it does the old hymn we sing.

Maybe it should be.

“UNTYING” THE TIES THAT BIND!

John Fawcett was ordained a Baptist minister in rural England in 1765. Af-

ter serving a small country church for seven years, he was invited to London to pas-

tor a wealthier and more esteemed congregation. He accepted the call and preached

his farewell sermon, and in the wagon with his possessions was ready to roll out of

town. But an outpouring of grief and love by his parishioners made him decide to

stay instead. Fawcett to write the well-know hymn, “Blest be the tie that Binds.”

“Blessed by the tie that binds/ our hearts in Christian love;/ the fellowship of

kindred minds/ is like to that above./// Before our Father’s throne/ we pour our ar-

dent prayers;/ our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,/ our comforts and our cares./

we share each other’s woes,/ our mutual burdens bear;/ and often for each other

flows/ the sympathizing tear./// When we asunder part,/ it gives us inward pain;/

but we shall still be joined in heart,/ and hope to meet again.

In those short lines Fawcett captured many of my feelings today and recent-

ly. It has been my privilege to share with you the presence of God in worship and in

private quiet moments of ministry over coffee or across the kitchen table or in a

hospital waiting room. Heartaches and hallelujahs. Laughter and tears. Fellowship

meals and funeral meals. Baby dedications and baptisms. Live nativity and Village.

Serving up smiles and hope. Living the dream. Walking together through the valley.

Sharing mountaintops.

I’m not sure it’s possible to really “untie the ties that bind us” because we’ll

always be joined in heart, and with each sweet memory we will anticipate that un-

broken fellowship above.

I can only say, “thank you.”

Sunday, July 24, 2016

Mira Hays, Norman, OK

CHOIR NOTES

This Sunday's praise songs will be "Here I Am to Worship" and "We Believe." The choir will sing "Come and Worship," a lively piece that incorporates the hymns "Come, Christians, Join to Sing" and "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship." See you Sunday Paula

CWF will meet Wednesday, August 10,

beginning with a noon luncheon followed by

our monthly meeting for business and wom-

en's studies. The lesson will be a book review

given by Miriam Lambert titled, Keep It Shut

by Karen Ehman. It is a nonfiction book about

what to say, how to say it, and when to say

nothing at all. This author's book is funny,

honest, and tackles the hard subjects of gossip;

speaking the truth in love; and the power of

our words from a Biblical standpoint. As a

woman, has your mouth ever gotten you in a

tangled-up mess? Through some spiritual in-

sight and soul-searching a new rule of tongue

may be adopted for you.

Join us for lunch and fellowship at

the CWF August 10 meeting.

NEEDS: David Brown has a friend that is in need of a Rent House by next week. If you would happen to know of one available, please contact Da-vid at 336-8247. Lori Taylor is in need of a couch and chest of drawers, contact her at 580/307.2375 or the church office. A couch is needed for a family, con-tact church office.

wedding anniversary and the renewal of their wedding vows at

their home 20751 CR 50 (W of town) on August 14 between

5:30 - 8 pm.

Dear First Christian Church,

Our visas are nearing their expiration

date. Casey's school is in the process of

getting them renewed. Please ask for a

smooth and uneventful process.

The one-week English course that we

have been preparing for is now in full

swing. Our team of 11 from North America

and Europe are excited to interact with

local university and high school English

teachers, and likewise, the students are

eager but nervous. We ask that the event

will strengthen and cement our relation-

ship with the university, as well as connect

us to more people.

Seasoned businessmen also came as

consultants to learn about our situation

and share with us their experiences and

insight as we take steps toward starting

up our own business here. We are still in

the stage of research and networking, but

the business we are seeking to establish

is an essential part of work here. It is the

channel in which we seek to build relation-

ships, transfer skills, gain creditability, rep-

utation, and trust. As we seek to mirror

our Brother through the workplace, we are

trusting Dad to use it for his purposes.

Thank you for partnering with us.
