“Though your sinsare like scarlet, they shall be aswhite as snow.”Isaiah 1:18
The brilliance of God...is everywhere...the stark whitesand crispy blues of winter; the autumn orange-redsand golden hues of fall; the royal purples and sunshineyellows that announce spring; and the multi-lusciousgreens and the shimmering beige sands of summer. Each season magnifies His brilliance, trumpets Hismagesty. He gave us the ability to rest in His almightyarms, as He fills us...whispering to us of ‘plans that Ihave for you...plans of a hope and a future...’ so whenHe sets us down, a fraction of this brilliance fires usfrom within to hit the ground running, aiming to doHis will...aiming to run another year... Happy NEWYEAR FA families and students...here’s to FADE, moreof Him, more of His brilliance in our lives. And here’sto running with you...in the glory of that brilliance!

[email protected] have missed all my Friday Addition students and can’twait to see them in a few days! The first week back,
each class will be have a day of lots of movement andteam work with the parachute and other group
activities. The second week of January allclasses will be starting a hockey unit.
Kindergarten – 2nd GradeLast semester we really worked on “move-ment concepts” such as personal space, loco-motor skills, speeds, levels, pathways, andeffort. This semester we will be using those
concepts to work on some sports related skills. This month we get to play with hockey sticks,
learning how to hold them, “dribble” a ball with them, and even score a goal! Manipulating an object with a long handle (like a hockeystick) is tricky, but it lays a foundation for learning many sports like hockey, golf, and even baseball.
3rd-6th GradeLast semester we focused on a few non-traditional sports (Frisbeegolf, tumbling, and kickball). This semester we will be focusing ontwo more traditional sports - hockey and volleyball. This month wewill be learning floor hockey, but the rules and skills students learncan be easily transferred to the ice, the driveway, on rollerblades, iceskates, or of course sneakers. I think hockey is a great sport to rein-force the concepts of offense verses defense and how we can play eachside well, while still displaying Christ-like characteristics. We will startthe unit by introducing the basic skills of floor hockey, stick handling, passing, and shooting. After the students have practiced these skills, wewill practice the concepts of offense and defense and learn the basicrules. Finally we will end our unit with a class-wide game of floor hockey(modified to involve the whole class).
Finally I want to say a big Thank You for all the wonderful Christmas gifts, cards, and goodies. You are all so thoughtful with your gifts and words ofencouragement. It is humbling to feel so appreciated for doing something Itruly love.

It has been a great break for me and my family, but I am eagerand excited to get back to Friday Addition. I can’t wait to hear allabout the activities that the kids participated in over the holidays.I am so happy that we finally have some snow on the ground
again, because our theme for January is “SNOW”.
We will be continuing our language development centeractivities with some minor changes for the new semester. Our language centers will now include “CVC” sorting. We will begin looking at consonant, vowel, consonantcombinations and sorting words by their family (endingsound). This will help the children to begin to sort, group and classify the sounds that we introduced duringthe first semester. We will be doing this in conjunctionwith our sight word station and our whole group lessons.
For whole group we will do more making word activitiesthis se- mester. We were only able to do “making words” a few weekslast semes- ter, but now that we have introduced all the letter sounds we willbegin to expand their use of these sounds to every other week. On the opposite week wewill put our focus on doing some fun sentence activities that will use our sight words.
In the afternoons we will be continuing to work with simple addition and subtraction inmath, as well as doing science activities. During January I want to get the kids using thescientific method to explore with water. They will use the scientific method to predict, observe, investigate, explore and discover WATER! We will be talking about water as aliquid, gas and solid. We will discover that some items sink and others float. We will evenmake frost!
In January our sharing will be as follows:Jan. 7: Anything they want!Jan. 14: Favorite Bath ToyJan. 21: Winter Memory (can include picture or item)Jan. 28: Something that weighs less
than a quarter
Over the next semester our class willcontinue to think about how God hascalled us to be special. God hascalled us to be different than theworld and to “live” for Him. Therefore, our verses will be centered on “Christian Liv-ing”.
For parents who are interested in purchasingbooks for their children through my ScholasticBook Club account, I have orders availableduring any month. You should see me for abook order this week if you are interested inordering books for your child in January. Iwill be placing the order for January afterschool on the 14th. If you wish to order onthe internet you may go to scholastic.com and set up an account using our class activationcode DRL8J . You may place an order online anytime, however, I will be submitting theJanuary order on the 14th.page 6

[email protected]@[email protected]@[email protected] back!! I'm excited to see each of you again in this
new year. We had a great Christmas as a family celebratingChrist's birth and remembering that what happened in amanger eventually led to the cross and resurrection, forwhich we owe everything in life and in eternity. We alsoenjoyed eating cookies, worshiping at church, andhanging out with friends and family. We hope you, too, had a meaningful Christmas.
Instead of being with us every other week, thissemester, Shelby will be with us each weekhelping out in our room. This continuity will begreat for our class, and since we all enjoyShelby so much, we're excited for this change.Shelby has been so helpful preparing activitiesfor our classroom, working on small projects witha few kids at a time, reading a story to us during
read-aloud, and working through parts of thestory as well as working on simple Spanish words through funactivities. We will continue to have Shelby join us in these ways each week.
In Science this month we will be learning about the human skeleton as well asworking with magnifying glasses. The hands-on activities we have for thesetwo lessons have proven to be very fun with this age group. We will keep thematerials in the class throughout the month to also be used for explorationtime.
The two art projects we will be doing in January will be a lot of fun. Thefirst will mimic the type of painting that Michelangelo used when he paintedthe Sistine Chapel. Have you ever painted lying down? Stay tuned... this is amemorable activity. The second will include sweets in a mini-pinata whichwill be incorporated into one of our Spanish lessons.
I have really appreciated the character of this class as a whole group. Wehave already grown close to one another and I have seen a great deal of team-work, unity, encouragement, and friendship. These are all high values for me in anyclassroom, and I have been very pleased with the growth of this group as a commu-nity. We will continue to do some fun team-work activities each week to furtherour camaraderie.
Here's hoping for more SNOW in January!

Happy New Year! I hope that you all enjoyed precious familytime over the holidays! I want to thank you for all the positivecomments at the Open House at the end of November. It’salways such a fun time to see all the finished projects that thekids did over the past semester, and I see how happy thestudents are to see their work on display. Art is made to beenjoyed! :)
As we get back into the swing of Friday Addition,we will be thinking about cold weather for the3rd/4th and 5th/6th classes. We will begin bydoing a project with snowmen for the 3rd/4thgraders. The 5th/6th graders will be using wa-tercolor pencils to draw/paint penguins. The
middle schoolers are going to be using watercolorsto explore the technique called pointillism, made fa-
mous by Georges Seurat. Later on in the month, all 3classes will be doing various projects inspired by the
abstract art of Wassily Kandinsky. We will look at some of his workand try to use some of his ideas to create some of our own!
WHO was Wassily Kandinsky? He was a Russian painter who is credited for the firstabstract paintings. [1913-1944]

It's 2011 and to welcome the full onslaught of Winter we will beexploring the Four Seasons of Antonio Vivaldi. Who would haveever thought to put the seasons to music? -- but they've beendoing it for years!! I hope the kids will experience the weatherlike never before.
In addition for Friday Addition, we will continue our studyin Solfege filled with syllables, hand signs and
Boomwhackers! We made some progress beforeChristmas on familiar songs and easy scales, butnow we will be trying melodies that are unfamil-
iar to help learn this unique way of singing.
I'll have some new short video sketches, too. Thesehave been fun for the kids, but what they don'trealize is that they are actually learning some-thing -- how significant and important music is
to enhance visual images and make things more dramatic.
And, of course, plan for Performance Day scheduled for February 18th.

Junior High Writing“Fourscore and seven years ago...” is one feature you may hearventuring near the English room this semester. Lincoln’s GettysburgAddress becomes our focus of memorization this month as we gear
up for Lincoln’s birthday in February. Our themes of WINDand FIRE from last semester turn to PROOF andLOGIC this semester as we tackle two long types ofwriting, the research paper and the short story. Ourresearch paper is unique this month, because we’re
teaming up with our science class themes as topicmaterial ~ unusual weather and its effects onpeople. Many shorter works will be peppered inalso to keep the students’ imaginations sharp ~
like Things I Thought I Knew, and The Other Side ofEverything. We continue our Painless Vocabulary lists, with review, especially in the form of our THAT WAS
EASY game. In literature, we’ll be reading two short stories, O.Henry’s “The Ransom of RedChief”, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlockstory, “The Red Headed League”.
High School World LiteratureFinishing up with “The Charge of the Light Bri-gade”, students will turn their focus to Valentinethoughts of “How Do I Love Thee?” by ElizabethBarrett Browning, and “For Whom the Bell Tolls”by John Dunn, before we begin to tackle thehumorous “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll. Con-tinuing our weekly Vocabulary Cartoon lists, Imean SAT word lists (!) we see our own vocabu-lary usage growing! This month we finish up theClassic Novel Analysis papers started last semester, as each student read 500 pages andcompleted a series of descriptive setting writings, background novel info, author bios, char-acter sketches, plot summaries, etc. and they will each give an oral presentation on theirfindings. Students read novels such as The Hound of the Baskervilles, Pride and Prejudice,Emma, The Lord of the Rings, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Animal Farm,Robinson Crusoe, etc. This month, as a change of pace, we will read many classic short sto-ries such as:“The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin“A Doll’s House” by Henri Ibsen“The Trajedy of Julius Ceasar” by Shakespeare“Tartuffe” by Moliere“Sign of Four” by Arthur Conan DoyleOur theme of PERSPECTIVES continues,as we explore views from the other side~ from Heaven above, which will takeplace as we switch from writing ourWorld Proverbs this semester.
Students continue to amaze me as theyput forth their best efforts, supporteach other, and make our class timetogether enjoyuable!! What a blessingyou are!

[email protected]¡Hola estudiantes y padres! ¡Bienvenidos al año nuevo! Iam excited to be getting back into the swing of things andI hope you are all ready to go as well! The elementary classes will be doing a little bit morework on the house during the month of January. We willbe creating a little book of our dream house with lots of
the vocabulary that we worked on last November. After finishing up the house, we will begin some workon FOOD! We will be learning some words for com-mon breakfast, lunch, and dinner items and be
learning how to order those things in a restau-rant. I hope to end our food unit with a littlein-class cooking lesson where we make andgrill our own corn or flour tortillas. ¡Deliciosas!
The middle school class will be learning howto talk about the subjects they are studying and atwhat time they study those things. We will be talk-ing about the country of Mexico and what schools are
like there. We will be learning some new grammar and also learn how to say thetime in Spanish. We will also learn how to describe people and things with theSpanish verb "to be" (ser) and adjectives. We will end this unit with talking aboutwhat things we like and dislike and then explaining why. We will also take a day offun to cook some homemade tortillas in class!
¡Hasta pronto!Sra. Yu
