This year the following LCHS staff members were awarded EXCEL grants: Ma- rissa Owen for “Is That Your DNA?!”; Cynthia Chapman for “Coeur d’Alene in Three Styles”; Timothy Sand- ford for “Bows and Strings”; Daniel Bell for “Did you Hear? Music is Science!”, “Get Zapped! Again our thanks to the EXCEL Board and its members, both present and past, for the remarkable contribution made to the Coeur d’Alene school district. Please come support our school Monday, December 5th at 5:00pm at Midtown Center on 4th Street. Our school board is making a very important decision about whether or not to run a bond this spring. This bond will include funding for 8 classrooms, more common area space, additional gym space for P.E. class- es and sporting events and upgrades to our parking lot and drop-off areas. Please email our board mem- bers today to show your support for much needed space at LCHS or come speak to our board and show them we support running the bond! Our thanks also to the parents who attended our parent conference night held November 10th. Between phone conferencing and actual in person conferences here at the school, we held close to 2,000 confer- ences. Again, we extend our thanks to all the parents who took the time to come in person or to commu- nicate on the phone with our staff. For parents who were not able to attend this conference night but have questions regarding your son or daughter’s progress at our school, please feel free to contact our Coun- seling Office at 769-2942 or the main office at 769-0769 to arrange for conferences. I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to Amy Alderman and Student Council for their heroic efforts with our annual food drive! Even during these trying financial times, Amy and the Student Council led the way guiding our staff and students in donating food for the Community Ac- tion Partnership. We know that our community depends on these donations and we appreciate Mrs. Alder- man’s and the Student Council’s dedication to the program. Lake City collected more than 2000 pounds of food and raised $963.92 for local community food banks. During this holiday season it is our hope that everyone would look for opportunities to serve others and to enrich the lives of the people around us. I hope your Thanksgiving vacation was enjoyable and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ….Each fall the EXCEL Board provides thousands of dollars to teachers in the Coeur d’Alene School District for extra educational programs and equipment not provided in the regular district budget. On behalf of Lake City High School, its students and staff, we would like to thank the EXCEL Board for the work they do for our students.

Once again LCHS and our teachers were honored and recognized as we enjoyed the Excel Big Event on Saturday, November 12th. This year the following LCHS staff members were awarded EXCEL grants: Ma-rissa Owen for “Is That Your DNA?!”; Cynthia Chapman for “Coeur d’Alene in Three Styles”; Timothy Sand-ford for “Bows and Strings”; Daniel Bell for “Did you Hear? Again our thanks to the EXCEL Board and its members, both present and past, for the remarkable contribution made to the Coeur d’Alene school district.

Please come support our school Monday, December 5th at 5:00pm at Midtown Center on 4th Street. Our school board is making a very important decision about whether or not to run a bond this spring. This bond will include funding for 8 classrooms, more common area space, additional gym space for P.E. class-es and sporting events and upgrades to our parking lot and drop-off areas. Please email our board mem-bers today to show your support for much needed space at LCHS or come speak to our board and show them we support running the bond!

FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE…It has come to our attention that our computer generated Attendance Letters were not being sent when a student is absent 2 -4 and 5 times in the same class. Those letters are now being sent regardless if the absences are excused or unexcused. We have included the LCHS Attendance Policy as a reference.

90% ATTENDANCE RULEA student who accrues five or more days of absences in any class shall lose credit for the semester. Credit will be reinstated when: a) the student passes an end-of-course assessment (EOCA) in which the student has lost credit, and b) the student has a passing grade for the course. If a student takes the EOCA and consequently loses credit, he/she may appeal to an academic committee if said student feels he/she has the minimum competency in the course work, but that was not reflected in the exam, and there are extenuating circumstances for violating the 90% attendance rule. The exam must be taken before any appeals will be granted.Courses which are performance based, such as music. Drama, technology, P.E., professional-technical, aide positions or YVA, may choose to have evaluations in which the student performs or presents a portfo-lio of semester work.Work missed due to excused absences will be made up at a time to be arranged by the teacher/department.Absences will be dealt with through a series of steps that include parent notification and conferences. Dis-ciplinary action will be taken when unexcused absenteeism occurs. These actions may include: Detention, In-School Suspension, Night School, Out-of-School Suspension, Notification to Prosecutor’s office as Habit-ual Truant, Driver’s License Suspension.

WITHDRAWING STUDENTS &EARLY GRADUATESAny student who will not be attending Lake City High School 2nd semester and/or seniors who have met graduation requirements by January 17, 2017 must go through a formal withdrawal procedure with the Registrar, Mrs. Leddy by January 18, 2017. Please notify the Registrar PRIOR to if you are withdrawing or will be an Early Graduate so all applicable paperwork can completed.

REPORT CARDSThe last day of 1st semester is Thursday, January 26th. Report cards are scheduled for posting on Family Access on Friday, February 3, 2017. Students who receive a semester grade of “I” (incomplete) for a class have until February 2, 2017, to com-plete all make up work. Incompletes remaining after this date will automatically be changed to a grade of “F” on student’s transcript.

TRANSCRIPTSSenior transcripts are scheduled for completion February 6, 2017. Make sure all incomplete work has been completed by February 2, 2017 so transcripts reflect correct grades and class ranking for the semes-ter! If you need a transcript to be sent to a college/university or another entity and have not turned in a “Tran-script Release form” and paid the required $3.00, please see the Counseling Secretary, Mrs. Ballard as soon as possible. Remember, this is a very busy time of the year for all schools! SENIORS . . . Be aware of your deadlines and plan ahead so there is sufficient time to prepare and send your transcripts to meet these deadlines. ALSO . . . Make sure all fines are cleared!

If you owe fines, a transcript WILL NOT be sent to any school or college

* * * * STUDENT APPOINTMENTS * * * *

If your son/daughter has an appointment during the school day, it will expedite the student checkout if they bring their excuse note to the Attendance Office first thing in the morning. They will get their pass at that time. When they need to leave, they will then present the pass to their teacher and they can be on their way. Calling in to excuse your son/daughter for an appointment is not necessarily the fastest process. Thank you for your help!

WARNINGDO NOT leave your purses, backpacks, or any items

unattended in hallways or classrooms! You run the risk of having items stolen. Please check the lost & found in the Main office. Unclaimed items

are donated to the local charity.

AP Environmental Science Students are getting excited for their annual Snow Science and Water Resources field trip! This February our class will embark to the cold, snowy mountains of Lookout Pass to investigate how the region’s winter snow pack affects freshwater resource availability and uses here in North Idaho. By digging snow pits and measuring snow-water equiva-lency, students will use their own field data to help them determine how the snowpack of the Northwest Rockies has changed over the last 65 years and make predictions for how our community may need to adapt to these changes in the future.

Each year, we have a handful of students in need of appropriate winter coats, pants, boots, gloves and hats to make it through our day of science in the snow. Our class would greatly appreciate donations of new or gen-tly used “snow gear” to help make sure each and every student in class is ready for a safe and fun day of science in the field:-snow coats and jackets-snow pants-snow gloves or mittens-snow boots-warm winter hats

Thank you!Jamie EslerAP Environmental [email protected]

Local ScholarshipsWinter break is a great time for seniors to research scholarships. The counseling staff maintains a list of local scholarships which can be found on the counsel-ing section of the LCHS website under "scholarships." The pdf is updated regularly as we are made aware of additional scholarship opportunities, so be sure to check back often. Local scholarship applications will be available in the counseling center beginning early January, but some offer online applications that are available now. Please contact Mrs. Preston if you have any questions.

Idaho College Application WeekLCHS was excited to host the first annual Idaho Col-lege Application Week. Over 180 college applications were submitted during government classes by our seniors. Students were also provided assistance with researching and submitting scholarship applications and researching job opportunities. Other grade levels were involved in fun activities throughout the week including SAT Question of the day, a college-themed door competition, and a college spirit day. Teachers shared information throughout the week about their college experience and grade appropriate tips for college planning.
