CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE­

During­ the­past­ four­years,­we­have­been­constantly­ reminded­of­ the

destruction­of­European­Jewry.­­Tonight­as­we­celebrate­the­69th­anniversary

of­our­liberation,­we­are­particularly­conscious­of­the­fate­of­Hungarian­Jewry.

From­the­end­of­April­ to­the­8th­July­1944,­ four­Hundred­and­thirty­thousand

Jews­were­deported­from­Hungary­to­Birkenau­where­the­vast­majority­were

gassed.­ ­ The­destruction­of­ the­Hungarian­Jews­ took­placed­during­ the­ last

stages­of­war.­­By­that­time­the­majority­of­Jews­in­Nazi­occupied­Europe­had

already­ been­ annihilated­ and­most­ of­ the­ extermination­ camps,­ Treblinka,

Belzec,­Sobibor,­Majdenek­and­Chelmno­had­been­dismantled.

“Could­they­have­been­saved?”­is­a­question­which­is­repeatedly­asked.

Their­fate­was­sealed­by­the­excessive­optimism­associated­with­the­policy­of

those­ who­ played­ for­ time,­ the­ fierce­ and­ blind­ hatred­ of­ the­ Hungarian

collaborators,­ the­ indifference­ of­ the­ world­ and­ the­ relentless,

uncompromising­determination­of­the­SS­to­liquidate­the­Jews­at­all­cost,

I­wish­ro­express­my­thanks­to­our­many­supporters­and­well­wishers­as­well­as

those­who­have­contributed­so­generously­to­the­brochure­and­raffle­tickets.­

It­is­with­great­pleasure­that­tonight,­I­welcome­you,­members­of­the­2nd­and

3rd­generation­as­well­as­our­friends­and­guests.

It­ gives­me­pleasure­ to­conclude­my­message­by­ thanking­our­ committee,

many­of­whom­are­2nd­and­3rd­generation,­for­their­invaluable­support.
