Christianity can sometimes be put into a doctrine-box or reduced to a set of rules and regulations blindly followed. While there are rules in Christianity, these flow out of a relationship., and can only be fully understood in the context of that relationship. At the heart of Christianity is a Person: the Person of Jesus Christ. It is this personal relationship with Jesus that defines Christianity; not the rules that flow from it.

God’s desire for us as humans has always been our happiness, which can only be fully realized in union with Him. God placed in the very heart of humanity a yearning for eternity, a kind of “magnetic pull” towards Himself; a God-shaped hole. Unfortunately because of Original Sin, humanity blindly searched for the “fix” to this in material things, or created gods as an answer to the quest for fulfillment and happiness, but God did not abandon humanity to this blind

search. He began preparing the way for the ultimate answer to our search for eternity by slowly forming a people, calling them to union with Him. Since these were only fallen people, they failed over and over again. The infinite God Himself, was the only way to repair the infinite tear created by humanity, and so “the Word became Flesh and dwelt among us.”

Jesus, in His very person, bridged the

gap created by humanity’s sin, enabling us to be in full and intimate relationship with God once again. Through Baptism we are incorporated into Jesus, but that is not the end of the story for us. Every moment is an opportunity to live in the reality of the intimate relationship with Jesus that defines our belief. When we claim to be Christian, we are saying that we are in a living relationship with the God who so desired us to be with Him that He took on our human frailty to enable us to be with Him. If we were really living this out, how different would our lives and relationships look?

Here are some “baby-steps” for renewing or strengthening your relationship with Jesus: Make a personal examination to see

what is holding you back from fully entrusting yourself to Jesus.

Entrust yourself to Jesus in a concrete way by humbly asking Him to enter your life as Lord.

Spend time daily with Him in the conversation of prayer.

Talk with someone about your relationship with Jesus, to support you in growth.

If you would like to talk with someone

about growing in your relationship with Jesus, contact John Molloy,

From our Holy Father

in Rome Pope Francis

MORNING MEDITATION IN THE CHAPEL OF THE DOMUS SANCTAE MARTHAE

“The Christian Way”

Taking on a Christian way of life therefore means “taking up one’s cross with Jesus and going forward”. Christ himself has shown us this way by emptying himself. Although he was in the form of God, the Pope said, he did not boast, he did not consider himself “a good that could not be renounced, but rather he emptied himself” and became “a servant to us all”.

This is the way of life that “will save us, give us joy and make us fruitful. For this journey of self-denial is undertaken in order to give life: it is the opposite of the journey of egoism ... which leads to one becoming attached to goods for one’s own sake”. The Christian way is “open to others, for it is the same journey that Jesus has made”. It is a journey “of self-emptying for the sake of giving life”.

“The Christian way is precisely this way of humility, of meekness, of gentleness. Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it. Jesus repeats this idea elsewhere in the Gospel. Remember when he speaks about the grain of wheat: unless the grain dies, it does not bear much fruit (cf Jn 12:24)”.

Pope Francis noted that this journey is to be made “with joy, for it is Jesus himself who gives us this joy. Following Jesus is a joy”. He warned, however, that one needs to follow along his way “and not according to the way of the world”. The important thing, he said, is that the journey be made “so as to give life to others and not to give life to oneself. It must be carried out in a spirit of generosity”.

This is the path to follow: “humility, service, not a shred of selfishness, not feeling self-important or making oneself out to be important before others, saying: I am a Christian...!”. Here the Pope quoted the Imitation of Christ which, he said, “gives us this most beautiful counsel: ama, nesceri, et pro nihilo reputari, i.e., ‘love being unknown and unregarded’. This is Christian humility; it is what Jesus did first”.

Parish Stewardship — a way of life

By: Rosario Hernandez

When Agustin Valdes lived with his parents, he would tell his mom that going to church was not for him. Later on, planning to travel through Europe, he boarded a ship to Greece, but due to conflicts in that country, was dropped off in Italy. In Rome he went to see the Pope and was surprised when the Pope came to him and shook his hand.

One day, a deacon asked him to help with the inmates he was working with, because due to the lack of help, they were about to close the program. Agustin once again thought, “That is not for me; why don’t they ask me to help with a children’s soccer team?” Nevertheless he prayed to God saying, “Lord, if you can use me so this program will not close, with your help I will try to do my best wherever you need me.” Agustin has been helping the inmates for five years now, taking the Word of God to the ones who need it the most.

Agustin has been a St. Joseph’s parishioner for 9 years and serves as a lector and Eucharistic minister for the 1:30 Mass. Recently, he joined our Pastoral Council. He serves because he is grateful to God for his wife, Celia and their children, Ana and Agustin. He says, “It is to God I have to give my life to. When I went to the Walk for Life in San Francisco, I regret not having gone before. We all need to thank God for His generosity and offer our lives to serve Him.”

¡Soy cristiano…!.
