4 Ways to Keep Your Cool Exercising in Summer ozone awareness day or a heat advisory, change your exercise location to somewhere indoors. It’s okay to workout in air conditioning once in a while to prevent collapsing and being hospitalized from heat stroke. You might find you even enjoy the change in routine!

Clothing Wear light, moisture-wicking clothing. Dark colors absorb heat, therefore wearing light-colored clothing will reflect the sun. Also, there have been amazing advancements in the science of moisture-wicking clothing. There are many options available. The benefits of moisture wicking is that the

sweat will not cling to your body and affect your body temperature, keeping you cooler and more regulated. Know Your Body

No one knows what you can do better than yourself. Of course, you do not want to become stagnate, or get in a rut, as it were. Pushing yourself a little more is part of exercising. However, outside in summer’s

W e are in the midst of summer. For a great many who enjoy exercising outdoors, summertime can

be brutal. Why? Heat and humidity can be a “killer,” perhaps not literally (although the danger does exist), but certainly figuratively. If you want to continue exercising outside in the summer, try these five tips. Hydration

Perhaps the most important tip is to stay hydrated. Does that mean to simply drink more water? Yes and no. Water is critical. You are likely familiar with the adage “once you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.” Stay ahead of your thirst by keeping water with you at all times. However, water is not be the sole answer. Sports drinks help replace electrolytes lost while sweating. Sports drinks have sugar, sodium and calories, so be judicious in your use of them. But drinking water only can still lead you to heat stroke. Weather Be aware of the weather, including the temperature and humidity levels. It takes time for your body to adjust to significant temperature changes. This may mean that you need to slow down or change the time of day you exercise. If you usually work out at the hottest part of the day (between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.), you might consider working out at cooler parts of the day instead...or changing the location of your workout. If you jog in the park where there is little shade, you may consider hitting a trail with a lot of trees to provide shade. Watch the weather report every day you plan on exercising out-of-doors. If the weather is calling for an

Eating Clean for Your Health Eating clean has become something of a fad lately. But it is not a fad in the traditional sense of the word. Clean eating will not help you lose 10 pounds in 5 days, or go from a size 20 to a size 4 in six months. It is a fad only in the sense that it is intensely popular right now. However, it has always been the “right” way to eat. So what exactly constitutes clean eating? It is eating food in its most natural state, or as close to natural as possible. How do you know what is clean food and what is not? Look at the label. First of all, if it has a label listing more than one ingredient, it’s not natural in that it has been grown (think of carrots – the only ingredient on a label would be carrot.) White bread is not considered a “clean” food. It consists of numerous refined products. Whole wheat bread is closer to a “clean” food in that the whole grains are more natural. Vegetables and fruit are key to your food choices. Try replacing one processed food per meal with a fresh vegetable. Move away from refined flours and sugars to whole grains and raw sugars. However, reduce sugar, even raw, to a minimum. Moderation will be your friend when it comes to sugar and salt intake. Some organizations advocate eating organic and/or vegan. New Wave Fitness simply endorses clean eating! If you do eat vegan, be sure to get enough protein, which is important to your nutritional balance.

heat and humidity, it may not the best time to engage your passion for the outdoors. How does your body tell you it’s not loving the heat or humidity? Lethargy, extreme thirst, dizziness, and/or fainting are all indications that you need to replenish your electrolytes and cool down. If after about one hour you still are not feeling right, call your doctor and ask for additional advice. New Wave Fitness is our name and fitness is our game! However, we are mindful of overall well-being. These tips are meant to assist you in leading a healthier lifestyle. We want you to embrace a passion for fitness. We also want you to be safe so that you can continue to enjoy exercise and the great outdoors. As the summer heats up and the humidity elevates, be mindful of your body and listen to it.

Babies are the most precious gifts in the world and it’s up to us to keep them safe and healthy. There are a lot of things to worry about when it comes to our little ones—what we put on their skin shouldn’t be one of them. Chemicals such as phthalates, parabens, and sodium lauryl sulfate—ingredients that can be skin irritants or endocrine disruptors—have turned up in shampoos, lotions, and baby washes. These

products also may contain harmful chemical by-products such as formaldehyde, which the EPA classifies as

probable carcinogens. Remember, baby’s skin is five times thinner than yours, making it easier for chemicals to be absorbed. And, because babies have a greater ratio of skin surface to body weight, they have a harder time flushing chemicals out of their systems.

& Feeling Great? $ Can You Put A Price On Looking

& Feeling Great?

President, New Wave Fitness, Inc.

To Your Health,

Dear Clients and Friends,

One of the biggest challenges folks have is staying healthy while traveling. I’ve found that planning a few things beforehand is key to staying on track: 1. Make sure you stay at a hotel with good workout room and/or swimming pool—

whichever you prefer—so you can continue to get in your workouts. 2. Pack good, all-natural meal-replacement bars like Shaklee 180 Snack or Meal Bars.

This keeps your blood sugar stable during the day so you don’t feel tempted to stop for fast food or miss a meal, which will lead to you wanting to eat the wall paper off the wall during the evening!

3. Make sure to take your vitamins. Double up on vitamins C & E because your immune system is under attack while traveling—with stress and being in environments with many potential germs. A strong immune system means a better chance of not getting sick or run down.

4. Also, if you can plan some sort of activity while you travel, it really keeps you focused on your health. I tend to bring my wakeboard and find a park to go ride, or if I’m in a place where I can surf or bike, I’ll hit those activities.

Preparing ahead of time to include these habits in your travel plans can really make a difference in staying fit & healthy during and after traveling.
