More information about the Heart of the City Campaign:

The ”Heart of the City Campaign” is a convenient way to support participating organizations. It’s your opportunity to give back to your favorite charities through a simple payroll deduction or one-time donation.

If you would like to select City Youth Now as your charity, their number is L2536.

We are happy to announce that this year there is an online donation portal with real time dashboard reports. It’s a way we can track how much we’re contributing as a department and how our city and county is doing on the goal of raising $1.4 million. Check out this link to register online or to see a live reporting of how close we are to reaching our goal. https://cc.tqa.sfo-cloud.com/

Let’s not forget that the most important part of this campaign is to have fun, so Stay tuned to receive emails about our JPD raffles and the beautiful assortment of gift baskets that will be offered at the raffle drawings each Friday. Tickets can be purchased from Carla Lemus and Jonte McQueen in the main building and from Deborah Bill and Maria Batres in JJC. Let’s take this time to get together, help the community, buy raffle tickets while supporting a good cause.

On Tuesday, September 18th musician and music historian, Marcus Shelby spoke to various units about the importance of music. CITY UPDATES

Mayor Breed signed legislation creating the SHARP office which will help survivors Sexual Harassment and Assault Prevention. The SHARP Office will consist of a dedicated team that will help Survivors of Sexual Harassment and Assault to better navigate the resources provided within the city. The Director of the SHARP Office will be appointed by the Human Rights Commission, with input from a three-member advisory committee composed of a sexual assault survivor, a community advocate, and an academic with expertise on sexual assault and harassment “Survivors who come forward to report sexual assault or harassment deserve to be treated with respect while their cases are investigated. Instead, they often have to recount their deeply personal and painful experiences to multiple different authorities,” said Mayor Breed. “The SHARP Office will help us better support victims to ensure that they have an advocate helping them navigate this difficult process.” _________________________________________________________________________________________

SFUSD

Staffing updates: SFUSD has shifted its special education team of 3 teachers and 2 paraprofessionals to 4 teachers only. We unfortunately lost long time paraprofessional Teresa Hayward, who is now working at another site within SFUSD. We appreciate her dedication over the years and will miss her. I am happy to announce that Patrick Weseman has been promoted to a permanent teaching position at Woodside Learning Center. Aside from his promotion, he is taking the next steps in his career, by working towards his teacher credentialing program.

We also added an additional Transition Specialist to the team. Please welcome Sylvia Lepe! Sylvia bring extensive experience with youth that have struggled in the school setting and is bilingual Spanish. She will be working closely with Sam Janeway on making sure our students get support after release and returning to their home school. Professional Development: We as a team will be applying skill building in the areas of Trauma Informed Instruction and the impact of exposure to Secondary Trauma. Trauma Informed Instruction is a teaching practice that acknowledges the emotional and physiological effects of trauma exposure on learning and personal development in youth. One example is to approach behavioral issues from a place of empathy by asking yourself "what happened to this young person?" as opposed to "what’s wrong with you?". SFUSD continued: We will look into how being exposed frequent trauma or to people that suffer from significant amounts trauma can have emotional and physiological effects over time. As a team we will read and discuss "Trauma Stewardship" to build our classroom skills as well as personal growth. Additionally, we will be applying methods that expert, Dr. Joyce Dorado provides in the area of self-care. An example of how your health is effected- If you run into a bear in the woods your body does some amazing things such as, pupils dilate for improvement of sight, heart rate increases to get more oxygen to you muscles so you can run faster, adrenalin is release to allow you to fight with more power, chemicals are released in your brain for quicker decisions and logic turns off and instincts take over. These are great things, if your confronting a bear. The problem is that when that bear chases you daily or that bear comes home every night at 9pm, your body is can get sick and your organs damaged by over exposure to those chemicals released. If there are any questions regarding the SFUSD Court Schools, please contact me any time- [email protected] - Principal Chris Lanier.
