The matrix below is intended to help in the selection of the correct seal configuration for your application. Use the top bar to determine which operating conditions apply to your application and then go down the chart to see the seals that meet the criteria (marked with an X). Since several seals may fall into one or more categories, look for the design that satisfies the widest range of parameters most important to your specific applica-tion. For further explanations please refer to the page numbers listed within the chart. Contact the factory with any questions or to discuss your specific requirements.

Note: The chart on this page is intended as a “guide” only for use in the seal selection process. Applications contain many variables that can affect the seals perform-ance. Testing of the seal by the user in their specific application, under all possible conditions, is required to determine the ultimate suitability of any seal.

The radius lip is used on radial rod and piston seals in lubricated or dry operating condi-tions where no abrasives are present. The rounded lip allows lubrication or PTFE parti-cles under the seal lip to extend life. It is also less susceptible to damage during handling and installation in comparison to chamfered or scraper lip designs. Part Number Prefix: Industrial:TV10S Mil / Aero: TV20S Flange: TV30S

The scraper lip is designed for use in abrasive media environments. The sharp angle edge prevents media from lodging between the seal lip and the dynamic surface to increase seal and hardware life. The scraper lip is normally used on the dynamic surface side, but is also available on both ID and OD lips. It is also recommended for use in “Step Cut” grooved designs to lock the seal in the groove. Extended Radius

Extended Scraper

Extended length seal designs are intended for use in pressures over 3000 and up to 10,000 psi. They are also used where excessive clearance gaps (beyond those recommended, see page 6 and 10 - 14) are present. The increased material thickness at the back of the seal acts as a built in back-up ring to help prevent seal failure due to ex-trusion. Extrusion (see illustration at right) occurs most often when high pressure is combined with high temperature and large gaps be-hind the seal. The extended seal design is available with radius and scraper lips and is designed to fit in extended glands. See G1 on page 6 and 10 –12. Extended Length High Pressure Designs

Flanged Seal Design Rotary / Reciprocating and Cryogenic Applications. Rotary: In rotary applications the seal must remain stationary inside the gland and never rotate with the shaft. The standard TV series seal is suitable for slow rotary motion of less than 50 sfpm (surface feet per minute) but can spin in the gland at higher speeds. To prevent seal rotation, the seal must be mechani-cally locked into the gland. The flange on the OD of this seal design is squeezed by the retention plate to act as an anti-rotation device. The flanged seal can handle speeds up to 400 sfpm at pressures under 100 psi. The determining factor is PV or Pressure (psi) x Velocity (sfpm). The TV Series seals have a PV rating of about 40,000 depending on all of the operating parameters. To determine the maximum pressure divide 40,000 by the sfpm. As the speed increases the pressure must decrease and vice versa. Remember to consider the maximum speed rating and pressure limitation of the seal. Other factors including seal material, media, tempera-ture and dynamic surface hardness contribute to the life of the seal and shaft. Reciprocating: The flange seal is also used in reciprocating applications. The flange keeps the seal locked into place preventing axial movement of the seal in the groove. The flange also acts as a secon-dary seal to prevent any leakage past the OD seal lip. Cryogenics: Very low temperature applications like Liquid Oxygen can cause seals to shrink on the OD pulling away the OD seal lip and causing leakage. When the flange seal is locked into the gland, it helps to prevent the seal lip from contracting and also provides a secondary seal.

Gland Designs

Two Piece Gland Spring energized seals generally require a two piece gland design to insure against dam-age during installation. Since the seal is made from stiffer polymers, it is not easily stretched or compressed like an o-ring that fits into a one piece gland. There are some combinations of diameter and cross section that allow the seals to fit into one piece glands without any adverse affects. Please consult the factory with your specific re-quirement. Step Cut Gland An alternative is the “Step Cut” gland where the front of the one piece groove is cut down to ease installation. The retention step is adequate to retain the seal in most applica-tions. The seal must go into the groove from the back (closed) side with the open side facing the pressure and retention step. The seal should never be installed open side first in this type of groove since there is no sup-port to back it up. Scraper Lip Seal It is recommended that the Scraper Lip de-sign (see page 4) be used in step cut glands. The sharp lip snaps in behind the step to im-prove the retention of the seal. The scraper lip should be located on the OD for rod seals and ID for piston seal step grooves. If the application requires a scraper lip on the dy-namic side, then the correct choice is scraper lips on both ID and OD.

Surface Finish The surface finish of the hardware is extremely important to the success of the seal, especially on the dynamic surface. Finishes that are too rough will cause seal leakage and excessive wear in dynamic applications. Unlike elastomer rubber contact seals, PTFE seals do not need surface imperfections to hold lubrication and can run on very smooth surfaces with or without lubrication. Testing over the years by PTFE resin manufacturers has demonstrated that the optimum surface finish for dynamic PTFE seals is between 4 - 8 Ra. Static seals can be used with finishes as high as 32 Ra depending on the media. Light gases like helium require better finishes than viscous liquids like hydraulic oil. Please refer to the charts for additional infor-mation.

Dynamic Surface Hardness The hardness of the dynamic surface of the hardware is important in order to prevent wear caused by the seal material, and to in-crease seal life. The recommendations in the chart are based on seals running in non-abrasive, lubricated or dry medias. If the media is abrasive, the dynamic surface hardness should be in-creased to prevent damage to the hardware. Please consult the factory with your specific application requirements.

Additional Seal Designs

Special Designs

The SES product line is available in custom sizes to fit most hardware configurations, with no tooling charges in most cases. Because SES are machined, they can be cut to a variety of geometries often eliminating the need for the customer to modify their hardware. Contact T-Lon to discuss your specific application and hardware requirements.

SES TS Series SlantPitch™ Spring Seals

The TS series utilizes a round wire coil spring that is slanted to produce a very even loading compression spring. It is normally applied in dynamic applications when low friction is most important. The TS series is available to fit all standard glands listed in this design guide and most custom configurations.

Elastomer Loaded Seals

T-Lon offers an elastomer loaded u-cup design for use in applications that do not require a metallic spring energizer. This design is used in many analytical instrumentation applications that require no metal contact with the media, or must have near zero dead space for media to collect. The seal can be loaded

fluoroelastomers and silicon. FDA and NSF compounds are available.

SES TH Series Helical Spring Seals

The TH series utilizes a helical wound flat ribbon spring to energize the rounded u-cup design. This spring produces a very high load versus deflection that is best suited for static applications requiring zero leakage. The TH series is available to fit all standard glands listed in this design guide and most custom configurations.

Silicon Filled TV Series Seals

The TV series seal can be back filled with liquid silicon to create a barrier between the media and the spring energizer within. This design is used in many food processing applications and/or when CIP (clean in place) requirements are required. The silicon prevents any media particles from lodging in the spring cavity and creating bacteria. Silicon can be applied to rod and piston seals in 1/8” - 1/4” radial cross sections and is available in red or white.
