May Birthday Celebrations!

Best wishes to our residents for a wonderful day!

The month of May immediately brings to mind the special day when we honor our Mothers. This year Mother’s Day will fall on Sunday, May 10th. I would like to share with you a beautiful quote that I found, which is a true description of a mother…

“A mother is like a flower, each one beautiful and unique.”

Also, Monday, May 25th, is Memorial Day, when we will be honoring the men and women of our Armed Services who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our way of life and keep us safe.

Here are some Community Updates... • Staff Changes—Our new Sous Chef, Jorge

Theresin, started with us on May 12th. Jorge is an experienced chef who has worked in the hotel industry for the past six years. We are happy to have him join the team and looking forward to his great contribution.

• COVID-19—Our community has been experiencing some challenging times for the past month and we continue to work through those challenges. We have had some positive cases and sadly, some deaths from this awful virus. We will continue to heed the warnings and follow the guidelines set for us as we mourn the loss of those who succumbed to the virus. We pray for those who are still fighting to get through it. Nevertheless, we are resilient people and I know we are going to get through this soon and get back to the happy times, without the strict social distancing guidelines.

We know how hard it has been on everyone to be isolated, so we thank you for your understanding and cooperation in adhering to our new rules, which have been put in place to

help us to keep you safe. Everyone should continue to wear a mask while you are among others and try to adhere to the six foot “social

distancing” guidelines. • Entertainment—The Lifestyle 360 department (Activities department) has been going “above and beyond” to keep you entertained while you are confined to your apartments. Many activities and messages have been videotaped and are being telecast on Channel 89. You may continue to enjoy many of

your favorite programs from your apartment. However, if you do not have Privatel you will not be able see Channel 89. For more information, please contact the Maintenance Department at 954-364-4744 if you have Comcast Cable only.

• Meetings—In order to maintain our social distancing, we will not be holding our regular residents’ meetings. We will continue to give you necessary updates by posting in the “Knowledge is Power” area, next to the elevators.

Finally, I would like to keep reminding you about our “Make a Friend a Neighbor” Referral Program. This has truly been a success thanks to your involvement. Here’s how this promotion works...You will receive a $2,000 rent credit value when you refer a friend to us and he or she moves into our community. For further information about this program, please contact our Sales Team, Lisa, Alice or Darline at (954) 963-0200.

As usual, please remember that all managers, including myself, have an “open door” policy and welcome your suggestions and/or concerns. We take pride in making our community “a better place to live.”

Definitions for “Clevering” People Even though the Coronavirus prevents Brain Train Conductor Judy Herman from visiting our community, she sends this missive for your entertainment until she can return. For stimulating the language and communication area of the brain, I’m all about puns and word play, a combination that I call “clevering.” Following are entertaining examples of both, received in an anonymous email. So other than adapting, I can neither give credit nor take credit for these gems.

Sterling University We’re pleased to be able to present this month’s programs

by Sterling University Professor Phil Leto via Channel 89. These are normally some of the most popular events here in our community and we invite you to join Professor Leto via your television for two impressive programs in May. Iran, Israel and the Middle Eastern Tinderbox Wednesday, May 6th • 1:45 p.m. — Channel 89

Under President Trump, a new American policy in the Middle East has emerged. With the U.S. withdrawal from

the Iran nuclear deal, the forging of stronger ties with the authoritarian Sunni Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia and an unequivocal support of Israel, Iran is clearly our primary

geopolitical adversary in the region. Iran is a significant force in the Civil Wars in Syria and Yemen, maintains an arc of influence from Tehran through Baghdad to Beirut and Damascus and is a state sponsor of terrorism. Will the imposition of suffocating sanctions and even greater global isolation bring the Iranian regime under control, or make it more dangerous?

James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and the Creation of American Government Wednesday, May 20th • 1:45 p.m. — Channel 89

On September 17, 1787, the Constitutional Convention meeting in Philadelphia sent to the states a document for their consideration, which when ratified in 1789, became the Supreme Law of the land—the Constitution of the United States of America. We recall the challenges confronted by those men then, and recent Congressional and Judicial interpretations of their intentions today.

Lectures Lifestyle 360 Happenings

America: The Story of U.S.

Premier Residences regularly offers programs from The Great Courses series for your edification and enjoyment. Check out these offerings now available to you on in-house TV Channel 89. Every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Forensic History

Dr. Elzabeth A. Murray is a forensic anthropologist, an award-winning professor and an instructor for numerous professional organizations, including the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners. In this course she examines and explains the forensics used in some of the greatest crimes in history, from the Jack the Ripper case to the Menendez Brothers. Every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Reading Biblical Literature: Genesis to Revelations

Dr. Craig R. Koester is the Asher O. and Carrie Nasby Professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary. He received his Ph.D from Union Theological Seminary. His innovative teaching style interweaves the study of biblical texts with their impact on art, literature and culture.

Every Friday at 10:30 a.m. Museum Masterpieces: The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Professor Richard Brettell is the Margaret McDermott Distinguished Professor of Art and Aesthetics at The University of Texas at Dallas. Professor Brettell’s work includes exhibitions for museums in cities ranging from San Francisco to Copenhagen. He has delivered scholarly lectures at various museums and has authored more than 25 books, including 19th and 20th Century European Drawings in the Robert Lehman Collection.

I am hoping you are all hanging in there and getting through this very difficult and unusual time. Please know that we miss having our live programs and really miss seeing your faces. (It was great getting to see many of you when we did our mini-parades around the building last month.) As you can imagine, it has been a real challenge trying to figure out how to get some interesting programs to you while we are in “lockdown mode.” Hopefully you have enjoyed seeing some of the programing we have been offering on Channel 89. This month you will see our Channel 89 programs listed on the calendar in the center of this publication, along with some other television programs we are suggesting. In particular, we have combed over the entire Turner Classic Movie schedule for May to suggest some movies as a helpful reference to you. We are also increasing more of our original content and bringing you (via Channel 89) some more of our regular lecturers and entertainers.

We are even going to try some Bingo for Fun sessions. It won’t be the same as our regular games but hopefully it will be a nice addition. Each of you will be receiving your own bingo card (as soon as we get in our shipment). Then, all you need to do is tune in to Channel 89 on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1:00 p.m. You will be playing against the bingo caller, so your competition will be to see if you can get a bingo before the caller. Unfortunately, there is no way for residents to play against each other currently (and trust me we’ve racked our brains). We also cannot collect or distribute cash or pay out winners and there are no prizes—so please remember this is just for fun!

Please call us at 954-364-4731 to suggest songs, movies, topics to discuss, set up Zoom meetings and any other activity-related concerns. Be safe!

Saturdays and Sundays • 1:00 p.m. Channel 89

In advance of Memorial Day, we are showing a History Channel Documentary series, America: The Story of Us. This epic 12-hour television event that tells the extraordinary story of how America was invented. With highly realistic CGI animation, dramatic recreations and thoughtful insights from some of America’s most respected artists, business leaders, academics and intellectuals, it is the first television event in nearly 40 years to present a comprehensive telling of America’s history.

Elaborate, ambitious and cinematic, America: The Story of Us will take you into the moments when Americans harnessed technology to advance human progress, from the rigors of linking the continent by transcontinental railroad–the internet of its day–to triumphing over vertical space through the construction of steel structured buildings to putting a man on the moon. It is an intensive look at the people, places and things that have shaped our nation, and the tough and thrilling adventure that is America’s 400-year history.

Don’t miss this enthralling series.
