SOMETHING SPECIAL

DERBY DAYS

In the Spring semester we successfully hosted our second annual Derby Days that made Kappa Delta the 2010 Derby Days champions. We raised approximately $2000 that was donated to Children's Miracle Net-work. This year Derby Days was a huge hit on campus with higher partici-pation among sororities and fraternities. We are confident that our Derby Days will continue to be a bigger hit each year, and we will be able to raise for even more money for our philanthropies.

We won three different awards at the IFC/CPC Awards Banquet: Best Overall GPA among IFC fraterni-ties, Highest New Member GPA among IFC, and a Merit Award given to the runner up of the overall best fraternity on campus. We are proud of our accomplishments and plan to become the one of the best fraternities on campus. With committees setup for awards, we are prepared to take the cup and prove to this campus what Sigma Chi represents with the excellence we enable in our overall membership.

In the Spring semester, we had our very first “Shootin’ with the Sigs” Skeet Shooting Tournament. We raised $900 for Children’s Miracle Network. We had 9 teams participate in the event composed of sororities, fraterni-ties, and local alumni. With many fraternities and sorori-ties participating and donating to our cause, we proved to gain campus relations as well. We have plans to make this event even better next year, scheduled for January 29, 2011.

CONTINUING EXCELLENCE!

MISSION 365

This summer the entire colony participated in the Mission 365 Program. Mission 365 is a program that teaches chapters how to recruit the right men for our fraternity. This program has seen much success in the past and it proved to be no different for our colony. With the lessons learned from 365, we applied the Jor-dan Standard and nearly doubled our membership and obtained the second highest pledge class on campus composed of men of the highest caliber.

WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN

In Honor of the brothers who entered the chapter’s eternal, the members of the Sigma Chi Xi colony preformed a can-dle light vigil. At eight o’clock Saturday night of Septem-ber 11th we all gathered to listen to the names of the broth-ers of Sigma Chi who lost their lives that day 10 years ago. We all stood their in a moment of silence after hearing their names and stories. All honor to their names!

MERLIN OLSEN DAY OF SERVICE

In honor of brother Merlin Olsen the colony mem-bers at Valdosta State hosted a canned food drive for a local food bank. With the help of campus sororities and students/faculty on campus, we raised over $200 dollars for the Second Harvest and collected over 200 canned goods and non-perishable items. We also participated in Miracle Jeans Day sponsored by Children's Miracle Network, a philanthropy greatly respected by Merlin, where each of our members donated $5 to CMN. Our colony will matched this donation. We donated a total of $180 to CMN.

Mission 365 in Action!

After we completed Mission 365, our members we eager to put what we had learned into practice. The timing was perfect, school was about to start and potential new members were awaiting great opportu-nities. Before recruitment even started we had seventeen quality men accept bids. We were already ahead of the game. For the fall semester our colony pledged nineteen men of good character: Alex Arantes, Nicholas Arminio, Ryan Foskey, Scott Groover, Dalton Gurley, Daniel Hix, Charles Irvine, Gary Jenkins, Anderson Loggins, Pratt Matthews, Christopher O’Connor, Nicholas Pascaul, Bradford Poole, Charles Shields, Anuj Thakker, Joseph Valadez, William Wellborn, Kyle Williams, and Chris-topher Young.

Another exciting event we participated in for the first time this past semester was Greek Week. For it being our first time participating we represented ourselves very well. We ended up finishing 4th out of 9 total participants. We will not accept losing and we fully expect to be Greek Week champions not only next year but for the coming years as well.

Along with Greek week we also won our first Championship in Intramural Softball. We started the season losing our first two games then began steamrolling through the competition. The championship failed to present a challenge, winning by a score of 10-1.

The Up Coming Semester

This semester is very pivotal for our colony’s history. We are starting a new community service event, visiting the Sherriff’s Boys Ranch just outside of town. We are very excited about this becoming our adopted community service for years to come. We are also in the process of finishing up Phase II and our Final Petition so that we may finally obtain our Charter and be Initiated brothers of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Since the end of last semester we formed our Alumni Advisory Board. This is a very positive step towards our charter. With the establishment of this board, we will have more guidance on how we should run chapters and set up a chapter that will be around for many years to come. We would like to thank our newly formed Alumni Advisory Board consisting of: Douglas Harden, Wright Kimbro, Dutch McNeal, Bob Minick, and Sam Sports.

During the summer while most people were enjoying the pool, our Executive Board were learning how to become better leaders. We made the trip up to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Bal-four Leadership Training Workshop. While there we met many amazing people and learned valu-able tools to ensure our success in the future. We even got to meet Grand Consul Wayne Tucker and International Sweetheart, Alexa Stabler.
