Basic Underlying Theory (BUT)

• With knowledge of what the electronbunch looks like at some time (t ) and theenvironmental changes endured by thebunch since the initial time (t0 ) – which inthis case include drift lengths, quadstrength, and quad length – it is possibleto obtain a very good representation ofthe bunch at time t0 .

Transfer Matrices

Drifts: The drift is an extremely simple beam line elementto model. In the drift, we do not have to take intoaccount any forces on the particles. The only things thatwe must take into account are x’, y’ and the length (L )of the drift.

Quadrupoles: Quads are used to focus the beam on oneplane and defocus it on the orthogonal plane. Because ofthis, the transformation is more difficult than the driftmatrix, and is dependant on the angle (which isdependant on the quad strength, k )

Why The Matrices?

• As the bunch travels through the quadrupolesand the drift, the beam distribution becomesrotated and skewed.

Enter The Matrix

In our program, the drifts are

given the following matrix:

While quadrupole transfer

matrices are solved via the

matrix to the left.

Two Programs(Both Alike in Dignity)

The Transfer Matrix Program: A program developed by me at Fermilab.

The purpose of the program is to solve the transfer matrices of thebeam as it progresses through space. It then applies the final

transfer matrix to a 1x4 vector of x, x’, y, and y’. The output of this

is later applied to the Max Entropy program.

The Max Entropy Program: The brilliant part of the code was done at

DESY in Germany. My contribution to the code was getting itexecute its algorithms on external (real) data as opposed to the

internal test which it came with. This program will take thehistograms and their associated angles as input, and attempt to

recreate the original bunch distribution.

Transfer Matrix Program

• The Transfer Matrix Program asks how many quads the

beam went through, the strength of the quads, their

lengths, and the length of the drifts. It will then calculate

all of the transfer matrices and apply the final matrix to

the data set. From this final matrix, we can then calculate

the angle of polarization:

_ = arctan(x21/x11)

Conclusions

• Even Gaussian distributions can be veryaccurately recreated by using themaximum entropy algorithm.

• It is likely that an optimum number ofhistograms needed to accurately recreatethe bunch will be obtained with furtherresearch.

Thanks to Roger, Erik, and Max for paying us to learn physics at the

best particle accelerator in the world.

And most importantly, thanks to the interns whose interesting

mesh of personalities and corny physics humor will leave

me with fond memories for a long time to come.
