Wow, I can’t believe a year has gone by already. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the Chamber President for the past year.

2016 has been a very busy year for the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. The board has come together to accomplish several goals that were designed to support our growing membership. To start with, an Ambassador Program was started by Shenna Younger and is made up of Chamber members, volunteers, city employees and community members who dedicate their time to come out and support Chamber events as greeters and ribbon-cutting attendees. You’ll notice the Ambassadors as the ones adorned in purple at these Chamber events. If you’re interested in becoming an Ambassador, contact the Chamber or talk to an Ambassador the next time you’re at an event.

Another new program is the “Shining Star” Business of the Month. This is an opportunity for Chamber members to nominate another Chamber member for their outstanding customer

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce has a mission to actively promote, educate and support the business community, to maximize a healthy economy and

provide community leadership.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:service. We’ve had some amazing winners this year who have all felt honored to be nominated by their Chamber peers. I encourage you to submit your nominations to the Chamber office and I look forward to reading your nominations in the future.

A popular program that was started this year is the Chamber Business Education Series. The attendance for this series has been amazing with great reviews from all in attendance. All workshops were taught by Chamber members and experts in their fields, and topics have included, “7 Steps to Marketing Success,” “How to Get More Search Traffic,” “Tax Implications of Being a Business Owner” and “How to Market Yourself and Motivate Others.” Attending several of these myself, not only did I learn a lot about each topic, but that we have some incredibly talented and knowledgeable people in our Chamber membership; these training opportunities continue in 2017.

Lastly I’d like to thank the continued support of the Chamber staff and volunteers who operate the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Information Center. We are very fortunate to have a group of caring, knowledgeable staff and volunteers representing not only the Chamber of Commerce but providing information to those interested in learning more about this wonderful place we live.

I look forward to seeing what the new year brings upon us and seeing you all at an upcoming event.

Brandino Gibson, Chamber President

This will be my final report for the Chamber as Past President. I have served on the Chamber Board for the past six years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I have met many wonderful people who I might not otherwise have met and made some great memories. One that sticks out in particular, was emceeing the lunch where Mick Dodge of the National Geographic TV show “The Legend of Mick Dodge” was the guest. I can honestly say, you had to be there to believe it!

I also learned a tremendous amount about attending, participating and finally running board meetings. Who knew there were so many rules that should be followed? I quickly learned the power that the small six-ounce gavel could wield.

The Chamber Board is made up of folks just like you and me. Some are business owners; some are employees of large corporations, local small nonprofits and some individuals who just believe in participating.

As I look back on the achievements and successes of the Chamber, a few items deserve mention. The Chamber staff has done a tremendous job this year with staff illness as well as a conversion to new computer software. Everything went far better than we could have hoped for. We are fortunate to have a wonderful group who truly work together as a team.

The last mention is for the Chamber but also for the Visitor Information Center (VIC). The two are separate entities but where the line of separation is, I have a tough time finding it. The Chamber and VIC are intertwined so strongly and we are hugely fortunate to have over 55 dedicated volunteers who staff the VIC virtually every day of the year. They welcome visitors and provide information and local knowledge and help make a visitor’s trip to the Olympic Peninsula more fun and likely to return again.

In closing, I thank you for your continued support of Chamber and remember the entire board are your friends and neighbors who have a vision to help promote local business and have fun along the way.

Past President Phil Castell

A look back ... a look forward to 2017

The Sequim Chamber just closed the books yet again on another very successful and eventful year. It goes without saying that serving as Executive Director of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber is a very robust role; however, a rewarding position to fulfill in our community!

It is with much appreciation I thank the Chamber board, our awesome members, devoted staff and big-hearted volunteers for their dedication of time and energy and support to the Chamber in 2016. As we enter the new year, the membership voted in four new board members; Renee Rux, Olympic View Inn; Brian Jackson, Home Instead Senior Care, Jim Stoffer, Retired/Sequim School Board, and Colleen Robinson, Habitat for Humanity. Darcie Senf of 1st Security Bank was appointed to the board in 2016 as well.

We said goodbye to board members Vanessa Fuller of the Dungeness River Audubon Center; Phil Castell of Castell Insurance; Caroline Smith of Olympic Mailing Services; and Tyler Sweet, of Sunland Golf

and Country Club whose terms ended in 2016. We are fortunate to live in a community with very devoted and compassionate members. Thank you; the Chamber and Visitor Information Center couldn’t exist without such devoted individuals.

It is this Chamber’s mission to advance and promote business by providing a forum to address issues and to unite and support our membership and community through programs, events and services. This year we’ve done just that by working together, cultivating a very cohesive and strong bond through our committees and projects. In addition, we added 69 new Chamber members to the roster.

The Sequim Merchants Group banded together and worked hard to beautify our downtown for the holidays, once again creating a tree-lighting ceremony and events related to Santa’s arrival, as well as supporting our retail sector in a “Shop Local” focus! The 10th annual Business Showcase Expo with the theme: “Go for the Gold” was a resounding achievement thanks to the support of our event sponsors, vendors, attendees and the Chamber board volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly on this event. This expo provides a unique forum for Chamber members to showcase their products and services to the community and to network with valuable local resources.

The Shiso City Sister City visit in 2016 proved to be a wonderful experience for the host families and students. In September, 10 students traveled to Sequim from Shiso, Japan, staying with host families and attending classes at Sequim High School while their three chaperones were escorted to the Friendship Garden at Carrie Blake Park and provided tours of Sequim schools. They also toured the Olympic Game Farm and the Dungeness River Audubon Center. In October, Sequim students embarked on a nine-day tour of Japan culminating in a visit to Shiso where they were guests of the very students they had hosted in Sequim. Student recruitment already is underway to recruit freshmen for 2017’s exchange program.

And to round out the year, the Sequim Community Chorus blessed the community again with its 32nd annual performance during the holiday season.

The Chamber continued its marketing efforts through social media, providing one-stop information on the Chamber website and Facebook pages. The Chamber website and newly integrated Chamber management software has proved to be an excellent tool on many levels, as well as to provide the ability to increase and strengthen our services to its members as our community continues to grow. Our website now provides more effective search abilities and we recently have added a mobile site and the ability to offer online payments via our website as well. The Chamber continues to provide both a monthly paper newsletter, provided to everyone who subscribes to the Sequim Gazette, as well as several communications every month, to its members via our electronic newsletter, all in an effort to showcase and support its members.

I also would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the 121st Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty Court: Queen Victoria Hall, Princess Dana Nguyen, Princess Tatum Jensen and Princess Hailey Kapetan for their dedication and service to the festival, the Chamber, and the entire community through the year.

This court served with poise and professionalism as wonderful ambassadors for Sequim while attending parades and events throughout Western Washington

In addition to expanding the successful activities and events of 2016, the Chamber committees have some exciting new ideas and opportunities to launch. Please remember, anyone is welcome to partake in one of our committees, please see page 8 for a list of opportunities in which you can get involved! Again, working together makes a huge difference and creates community of which everyone benefits.

Shelli Robb-Kahler, Executive Director

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 20166

The Irrigation Festival started as a celebration of the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the valley. It was as much a commemoration of the ditches as it was of the community that made it happen. Ever since that first picnic in 1896, the Sequim Irrigation Festival has been a celebration of, for and about this wonderful community in which we live.

The Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuously running festival in Washington, spans two weekends in early May and most of the events are free to the community and our visitors. Our festival continues to grow and evolve over the years and it is all due to the generosity of the businesses and individuals of the Sequim/Port Angeles area. While the Irrigation Festival is a community festival that is overseen by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, it receives no funding from the Chamber. The festival is fully self-supporting and relies on sponsorships, donations (both monetary and in-kind), fundraising and the many volunteers who help the festival to make it successful.

The 2016 Sequim Irrigation Festival theme was “121 Looking to the Future Through The Past.”

The 2016 logo was created by logo design contest winner Laura Friedkin. Raquel Hermosillo, a local fifth-grader, created the winning festival button design during a contest open to all elementary students.

Our Royal Court Queen Victoria Hall and Princesses Dana Nguyen, Hailey Kapetan and Tatum Jensen represented the Irrigation Festival and the City of Sequim in parades, civic events and festivals throughout the year with professionalism, dedication and high spirits. The 2016 court had an exceptional year as they each individually achieved over 500 hours of community service throughout their reign. This included making appearances around town to represent the Irrigation Festival, traveling with the float to other community parades around Western Washington and Victoria, B.C., organizing a day of fun activities at the Boys & Girls Club, fundraising and collecting food for the local food bank, bringing awareness

to our local WAG (Welfare Animal Guild) and visiting the children at Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma.

Preparations are now being made for the 122nd Sequim Irrigation Festival. The theme “122 Skies of Blue” will be used throughout the festival. The 2017 logo was again created by logo designer, Laura Friedkin. This year’s festival button contest is open to the elementary school students and the winner will be announced in early 2017. The festival buttons will then be sold by the fifth-graders from the Sequim School District in late March.

The Grand Marshal for the 122nd Irrigation Festival has been selected and the board is pleased to honor our local Sequim High School band director Vern Fosket. The Sequim Pioneer Association has selected the following for 2017: Grand Pioneer: Beverly Cays Hendrikson, Grand Pioneer: Stephen K. Olts, Honorary Pioneer: Norma Govan Knapman Topness and Honorary Pioneer: Ron Parrish as their 2017 Pioneers.

Planning and building for the 2017 Irrigation Festival already has started. The building of the new float to represent the theme began after the last parade in October and will be ready for the first parade in mid-April.

Sequim Irrigation FestivalAdditionally, the search for the 2017 royal court began

in September and culminates on Feb. 11 with the Royalty Pageant. This scholarship event selects the high school students that will represent Sequim around Western Washington at the parades they go to. Then on March 25, the Kick-off Dinner and Auction will be held as a fundraiser for the festival, where donated items and the festival pins are auctioned.

The 122nd Sequim Irrigation Festival will take place from May 5-14, with many events, most of which are free.

• Crazy Callen Weekend in Downtown Sequim (May 5-7) • First Friday Art Walk • Crazy Daze Breakfast • Kids Parade • Driftwood Art Show • Innovative Arts and Crafts Show • Sequim High School Operetta • Sequim Farmers Market • Grand Finale Weekend (May 12-14) • Grand Parade • Car Parade and Show n’ Shine • Logging Show • Strongman Competition • Carnival • Historical Walking Tour • Family Fun Run • Boys & Girls Club Golf TournamentThe Irrigation Festival director. All members of the community and visitors to the area are invited to join in the festivities! If you are interested in participating on the Festival Committee, please contact director Deon Kapetan at 461-6511 or via e-mail at [email protected]. Community Events& Festivals

The Sequim area is blessed with an abundance of events and festivals throughout the year. Each event contributes its own unique value to our community as a great place to live. These events and festivals not only bring in visitors to support our local economy, they also provide our residents with enjoyable activities and entertainment, enriching our lives as we take the opportunity to meet our neighbors and make new friends.

May 2016 hosted the 121st Annual Irrigation Festival to Sequim — “Looking to the Future through the Past.” As the longest continuous festival in

Washington, the Irrigation Festival honors both our pioneers who had the foresight to call Sequim home but also the initiative to bring irrigation to the land to support our growing community. May 2017 will host the 122nd Irrigation Festival with the theme of “122 Skies of Blue.” As a Chamber-sponsored community event, everyone is encouraged to participate and enjoy the festivities!

Lavender Weekend, produced by the many wonderful lavender farms located in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, continues to be the largest tourist-destination festival in the Sequim area and has earned Sequim the official designation as “The Lavender Capital of North America™.” Each and every July, more than 20,000 people visit the lavender farms on tour as well as participate in the multitude of events that take place during the third weekend of July. From street fairs to car, driftwood and quilt shows, art tours and musical entertainment, there were festival activities for every member of the family to enjoy.

Nowhere else in this part of the world offers these events and rural attractions during the third weekend July. Several Chamber members participate in the farm tours and activities, and the Visitor Information Center is especially busy during July. The Chamber staff and volunteers contribute substantial time and energy to assisting visitors, answering questions, giving directions and doing their best to make each and every visitor feel very welcomed in our unique community. Many volunteers assist on the lavender farms as well.

The Sequim Community Choir celebrated its 31st anniversary in December 2016 and performed its annual Christmas concerts to full houses of local residents and community visitors.

Posting of 2017 Community EventsContact the Chamber to find out how events for your local clubs and

organizations may be added to the Calendar of Events on the Chamber’s website and posted at the Visitor Information Center! For up-to-the-minute

information on community events and festivals, be sure to visit www.sequimchamber.com for more information.

MERCHANTS GROUP  Chair: Vickie Oen, Kaylene Byrne The Sequim Merchants Group meets six times a year on

the third Wednesday of the month during February, April, June, August, October and November. Meetings are at 5:30 p.m. and locations alternate each month among different host merchants. The Merchants Group once again has continued to grow in attendance.

Chamber membership is not required and if your business is interested in becoming involved, call the Chamber to be added the email list.

Among the many successful projects the group accomplished is the following:

• In February, the mystery game called “Whodunnit”? — pat-terned after the game “CLUE” took place for the fourth year in a row during January’s First Friday Artwalk. The game helped to create a fun night of late shopping which encouraged shoppers to visit a variety of stores. The theme this year was “The Case of the Chrome Key” and took place in the 1940s. The prize included a two-night stay at the Seaview Vacation Rental from Cedarbrook Lavender & Herb Farm, one cake decorating class from That Takes The Cake, a knitting class from A Dropped Stitch, two tickets plus T-shirts to Purple Haze Daze from Purple Haze Lavender Farm, a 30 minute one-on-one class with MacTraders, “Sequim-Dungeness Valley” by Katherine Vollenweider from the Museum & Arts Center, sea glass earrings of historic cobalt blue in sterling silver from West Coast Sea Glass, and more!

• In March, Theresa Rubens from Solar City helped facilitate the donation of gift bags filled with items from local merchants that were presented to the Irrigation Festival Royalty at their annual Kick-off dinner. This has now become a yearly tradition as a way of thanking the royalty who beautifully represent Sequim all over our state!

• In April the merchants put on a scavenger hunt called “Birdfest Birdquest” which was designed to encourage shoppers to once again visit a variety of stores. In partnership with the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society and the art class at Sequim High School, 12 stores hosted a “bird sculpture” created by the students. There was a game card that required participants to match the bird with the correct store. This was a very successful

event and great exposure for the art students as well. Prizes included a one-year membership to the Olympic

Peninsula Audubon Society, as well as bird puzzles, a birdhouse kit and a bird book. The Merchants Group looks forward to continuation of this as an annual partnership event.

• May brought the Irrigation Festival in which the mer-chants displayed student art entries for the festival’s button contest. Many families visited downtown stores in order to see their child’s artwork on display. Merchants and families once again really enjoyed having the the Family Fun Day and Kid-dies Parade back on Washington Street.

• In July, during Sequim Lavender Weekend, the merchants decorated the bus stops in downtown Sequim and spruced up the downtown with the addition of 150 lavender flags. The weather was amazing and we once again received many positive comments on how festive and welcoming the downtown looked; plus the weather was amazing!

• In October, the merchants opened their doors to over 1,000 wonderful trick o’ treaters and gave away bucket fulls of goodies! The turnout this year was the best ever.

• The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in the heart of Sequim to Centennial Place in a fabulous vintage fire truck. With the help of the City of Sequim (and a lot of help from Emily Westcott and her elves) the largest tree we have ever had was beautifully decorated with thousands of lights. There was music and entertainment provided all day long with chili and hot chocolate provided by our local Boy Scout troop and a tree-lighting ceremony and light-counting contest complete with gift certificate from many of the stores.

Once again there was a tractor parade which was loved by all! On that same Saturday many of the merchants hosted open houses complete with holiday refreshments and special prizes or sales.

This same weekend was also the kick-off of the “Elf on a Shelf” scavenger hunt for children ages 0-15 with prizes gener-ously donated by The Dungeness Kids Company, BrokersGroup Real Estate and WeDo Fudge. The game was well received and with 20 merchants participating, was once again deemed a great success! Merchants had fun over the holiday season decorating their windows for our annual window decorating contest judged by the Irrigation Festival Royalty. A hearty congratulation goes to this year’s winner Olympic Lavender Co. and a special thank you to our prize donator Sound Publishing!

Interested Chamber members or individuals are welcome to join the committee and help us plan for 2017 and beyond.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Chair: Jim Weatherly. Members: Jeff Anderson, Brandino

Gibson, Deon Kapetan, Caroline Stuckey, Heather Wells and Chamber staff.

The Membership Committee meets the second Wednesday of every month at 3:30 p.m.

It was a transitional year in the Membership committee! The committee continued working on getting to know our current members a little better this year, including reviewing a 2015 survey sent out to our members to determine if expectations of being a member are being met, what we can do to improve the benefits of being a Chamber member, what challenges our members have in operating their business; and what topics our members are interested in learning more about at Chamber events. The committee worked in tandem with the Chamber President on educational programming for members throughout the year, meeting a request of members surveyed. Plans to con-tinue expanding our Chamber membership, while maintaining and improving person-to-person touch-points that makes our Chamber relationships unique, are discussion items and focus in the new year.

“Go for the Gold” was the theme for this year’s 10th Annual Business Showcase. The event was a roaring success with a packed house full of amazing vendors and attendees, portray-ing their “gold” medal standards and service! The Chamber is fortunate to have an active and supportive team of board members along with the staff, who know the importance of the Chamber of Commerce’s Vision and Mission Statement — which is to actively promote, educate and support the business com-munity. The Chamber’s hope is to see the membership continue to grow in the community.

1993 for the purpose of promoting mutual and everlasting friendship of the two cities, Sequim and its sister city, Shiso in Japan.

This is done by hosting the annual education exchange of ninth-grade students from Shiso, Japan, and ninth-grade stu-dents from Sequim schools. Other exchange purposes involve teaching Sequim students about Japanese culture, history and language through first-hand experiences; broadening the student perspective of international relations; planning, preparing and participating in international travel; sharing experiences with family, classmates, teachers and the com-munity. Schools; League of Women Voters Voter Crisis Committee. He’s also a Trinity United Methodist Church lay leader and Sister City chaperone for the Student Delegation Oct. 15 trip to Shiso, Japan.

DEON KAPETAN, IRRIGATION FESTIVAL APPOINTEE TO THE BOARD Cherry Creek Mortgage

Deon Kapetan has been involved in the planning of the Irrigation Festival since 2000, but began participating in the festival long before that by performing in skits at Crazy Daze. She has demonstrated her organizational skills and spirit by co-chairing and then chairing the Crazy Daze Breakfast from 2000-2006. In 2007, she became the chair of the float display committee, which

manages the parades that the royalty and float travel to around Western Washington. Then in 2010, she was eager to accept her current position of festival director and has never looked back.

Deon and her husband Kevin moved to Sequim in 1990 and have been very active in the community and with the festival. Their two children have been involved in the festival from an early age as well. Deon is the sales manager at Cherry Creek Mortgage in Sequim.

Being a volunteer with the festival is “very rewarding and fun experience,” she said. She is excited about her seventh year as festival director and sees lots of new ideas, committee members and opportunities happening over the course of the next year. “We are always adapting to the needs of a growing festival by developing teams to better facilitate the festival,” she said.

“The festival is all about the volunteers and the community. There are 22 committee directors and lots of volunteers who help with each of these festival committees. Some of the newer formed teams within the festival committee have been vital to the success of the festival. This includes some changes to this year’s festival with the newly revamped of Family 5K Fun Run that we’re looking forward to rolling out. We are able to pull off such an enormous event because of the countless volunteers along with the financial support of the many local businesses and individuals.

The Sequim Irrigation Festival is truly a community event. The festival also gives back to the community in many ways. There are the fun events to celebrate our heritage, as well as our involvement in other community services, such as the care packages for the troops. The royalty often led the charge for community involvement and 2016 was no exception as each royal this year exceeded 500 hours or community service. They and the Festival Committee have participated in the Relay for Life, collections for the Sequim Food Bank and Toys for Tots and a special addition this year was added by visiting Mary Bridge Hospital in Tacoma.”

Deon invites anyone who enjoys the festival events, likes working with a close knit team and doing something good for the community to consider joining the Irrigation Festival Committee.

GLORIA DAHLQUISTShiso-Sequim Sister City appointee to the board

Prior to my recent retirement, for the past 13 years I had the privilege of serving the children of U.S. military personnel who live overseas, on U.S. Naval and Air Force bases. During this time I served as a school guidance counselor in the educational activities of the U.S. Defense Department. In this capacity I spent 11 years in Japan. First, I lived and worked at Atsugi Naval Air Station, located just outside of Tokyo, and lived in a very traditional

Japanese house. Later, I transferred to Sasebo Naval Base, on the southern-most home island, called Kyushu.

These employment postings allowed me to travel extensively, not only through the four Japanese home islands, but also through much of Asia. My adventures in the Greater Tokyo area were especially enjoyable, but after I grew weary of living in an urban area with 35 million people hustling about, I transferred to Sasebo Naval Base and thoroughly relished the quieter Japanese lifestyle on the southern-most home island of Kyushu.

While living in Japan, I became fascinated with the Japanese history, traditions and culture. I began collecting antique Japanese Shinto, hino, warrior and geisha dolls, as well a host of other artifacts.

For these reasons I am delighted to have an opportunity to serve as the liaison for the Sequim-Shiso Sister City Association and the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. In this capacity I look forward to sharing my knowledge and personal experiences with the children and citizens of Sequim, with anticipation in bringing an increased awareness regarding the beauty, simplicity and peacefulness of the Japanese society and culture. I also hope to highlight the vital role our ally, Japan, which is the third wealthiest nation of Earth, plays in maintaining world peace.

Peninsula Tour Association, Tax Advisory Board member to the Port Angeles City Council and Washington State Tourism Familiarization Tour representative.

Renee has spent the past few years living and traveling in national parks throughout the Northwest. She was general manager in Mount Rainier National Park, operations manager in Kings Canyon National Park and manager in Denali National Park.

While she has enjoyed her stint living and working in some of the most beautiful places in the country, she said, “The Olympic Peninsula calls to my heart and soul. It has been my home, my playground and the place I raised my children.” When Renee is not working, she enjoys hiking, golfing, fishing, snow shoeing and most importantly making memories with her children and grandchildren.

BRIAN JACKSONHome Instead Senior Care

Brian Jackson grew up in a family business in California. His parents purchased a Merry Maids franchise when he was 13 years old. He started at the bottom. He did laundry, hung door hangers, scrubbed floors on his hands and knees. He did whatever it took to get the job done. Brian went off to college and his dad asked him to return to help run the family business. Brian’s parents decided to step back from the company.

Brian led the company to purchase an adjoining territory and grew the two franchises to become the second largest operation in the Merry Maids organization.

In 1996, Brian found a more meaningful way to serve others. He purchased two franchises of Home Instead Senior Care. He successfully ran the two businesses together for many years. In 2015, he and his wife decided to move to Sequim to purchase the Home Instead Senior Care serving Clallam, Jefferson and Island counties. They have now sold their businesses in California and are proud to be 100 percent in Washington. He currently employs over 87 people in our local community.

Along the way Brian has learned many things. His employees make all of the difference in how they are able to serve its clients. Brian has lobbied for business issues at a federal, state and local level. He understands that business owners must be good stewards of the communities they serve. Brian knows the struggles of trying to stay in the black and being sure that you have enough money to cover payroll. Brian understands the challenges of complying with labor law and business codes.

His vision for the Chamber of Commerce is to see it continue to promote positive business growth in our community. He also would like to see it add programs that help to educate business owners on better ways to grow their businesses and stay up-to-date on current regulations. Brian feels that one way businesses can ensure that lawmakers understand how laws will affect small business in our community and our state is by sharing their stories and inviting them to our businesses so that they truly understand the issues.

For the 10th year in a row, the Business Showcase — themed “Go for the Gold” was a resounding success! Forty-two local businesses and restaurants participated in the October 2016 event. Chamber’s financial picture

The Chamber Board of Directors adopts an annual budget to provide for the most efficient and productive use of revenues received by the Chamber throughout the year. The board then monitors Chamber revenues and expenditures through a variety of reports provided at each monthly meeting of the board. The Chamber’s fiscal year is based on the calendar year beginning Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. The Chamber is in good financial standing and made healthy additions to its reserves in 2016. The Chamber established exciting fundraising raffles that also focus on tourism in Sequim and neighboring communities. As indicated in past years, it is important to note that the Chamber’s annual budget provides for separate accounting for the following activities: Chamber member services, Visitor Information Center operations, Irrigation Festival, Shiso Sister City Program, Flower Basket/Retail Trade, Howard Wood Memorial Scholarship fund and the Sequim Community Choir.

2016 Chamber Partners The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce

was very pleased to announce Louie Rychlik, businessman and volunteer, as the 2015 Citizen of the Year. Rychlik was nominated by Judy Reandeau-Stipe.

Louie was nominated for his dedication of time, talent and experience, as well as personal funding of anything that helps the community, as well as his never-ending effort to make life better for others. Louie is quoted as saying, “I want to give back to the community that supported my business, Louie’s Well Drilling, for over 40 years.” His involvement stemmed from constructing the BMX track for the county, sponsoring Music in the Park, his ongoing dedication to the Dungeness Schoolhouse continued care and elevator installation, as well as his tireless work and dedication to the Sequim Museum and Arts Center. Louie was quoted as the “go to guy” from start to finish of a desired change, whether it is for a small favor or a huge project.

A committee of previous recipients selected finalists from a pool of Sequim citizens nominated by members of the community. Finalists are chosen based on their history of outstanding volunteer service to the Sequim community. Annually, the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for and determines the Citizen of the Year under the following criteria:

• Nominees shall be residents of Eastern Clallam

County (primarily Sequim School District area.)• Nominees shall be persons who have performed

outstanding service to the community.• Service rendered by nominees shall be above, beyond

and generally outside the regular occupation of the nominee.

• Two persons working jointly in a community project or projects may be nominated to receive a joint award. Groups of more than two will not be considered.

Persons making nominations should bear in mind the foregoing guidelines, while fully understanding that the selection tribunal must, of necessity be the final authority.

The Sequim Citizen of the Year 2016 will be announced on Feb. 28 at the Chamber’s luncheon to be held at Sunland.

Citizen of the Year Award

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all businesses, organizations and individuals who sponsored a Sequim flower basket! Each year, Chamber board member Emily Westcott works in collaboration with the Sequim School District agriculture class and the City of Sequim to create more than 100 flower baskets to decorate downtown Sequim.

The agriculture class selects the flower theme, buys the seeds and starter plants, and prepares the baskets. The city crews install the baskets and then water and fertilize the baskets until nature dictates their removal. From May through September, visitors from around the world and local residents enjoy these prolific blooming baskets. The program has been under way for more than 20 years and is a shining example of teamwork!

The proceeds from the sponsors also fund the annual holiday lights that magically appear each year at First Security and Centennial Place at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street. This magical corner plays host to Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Irrigation Festival Royalty elves each year along with the musical talent of the Sequim City Band and a host of other entertainment.

In addition to the baskets and holiday lights, sponsorship of the baskets contributes to a variety of events designed to encourage visitors to shop in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area.

The Chamber extends its sincere appreciation to all flower basket sponsors and their support for the program which significantly contributes to maintaining the hometown atmosphere we enjoy!
