Making A One-Piece Block Mold

To Demonstrate this Mold Making Process, a Two-Dimensional Model with a flat back is used. The model will be secured to a base, release applied, and the RTV rubber poured.

STEP 1 Construct a Box or Simple Frame This will help contain the liquid mold rubber and prevent leakage as it hardens over the model. Make a box or frame using wood, strong cardboard, acrylic sheet or use a container made from metal, plastic, or strong cardboard. Make sure that the frame or box is at least ½” inch larger than the model’s perimeter and several inches higher than the model’s highest point. Apply Release Agent MR150 to side walls. Note: If constructing a frame, secure it to a baseboard and seal the seams using KC Clay or hot melt glue. STEP 2 Secure and Prepare the Model Center the model and secure it down by gluing or screwing it to the base. Use KC clay to seal off the bottom edges of model and to prevent rubber from flowing underneath. Apply Release Agent MR150 to all surfaces. Note: If model is porous (i.e., wood, plaster, concrete, stone, pottery) it will need to be properly sealed prior to applying release.

STEP 3 Prepare and Pour RTV Mold Rubber Measure out appropriate amounts of A and B using an accurate scale. Mix thoroughly, scraping the sides and bottom of container, while avoiding whipping air into mix. Pour into mold cavity, starting from the lowest point and allowing RTV to flow across model—pushing out any air. A thin stream of RTV poured from 12-18” inches above the mold cavity will release air as it drops to the surface. Pour enough material to have at least a ½ “inch of rubber over the model’s highest point. Allow to cure at 77F. Note: De-airing material after mixing using a Vacuum Chamber will minimize air bubbles and provide a stronger rubber mold, especially with Silicone RTV.

STEP 4 Demold RTV Mold Rubber After RTV mold rubber has cured, typically after 16-24 hours @ 77F, it is ready for removal off the model—“demolding”. To avoid premature tearing, starting at one corner of the mold, slowly and gently pull rubber off model. The mold should be an exact mirror image of the model and is now ready for casting.

Making A Two-Piece Block Mold To Demonstrate this Mold Making Process, a Three-Dimensional Model of a Figurine is used. The model will be embedded half-way in clay and RTV rubber is poured over it to make the 1st half of the mold, then, when cured, a release is applied and the 2nd half of the mold is made. STEP 1 Construct a Box or Simple Frame (See Step 1 on Page 2) and Add a Layer of Clay Line entire box with a thin layer of KC Clay. Clay will secure the model in place. No release is applied at this time.

STEP 2 Embed Model in Clay Divide model in half—this will serve as the “parting line” for the 1st half of mold. Position and press model into clay. Add more clay, building it up to the parting line. Smooth out clay using rubbing alcohol. Note: Foil or plastic wrap is often used to prevent clay from sticking to the original model prior to embedment. STEP 3 Prepare Model—Add Alignment Keys and Pour Hole Using a pen or pencil, make depressions or channels—“keys”—in the clay around the perimeter of the model. These will help to align the two halves of the mold together. Next, make a pour hole, which will also serve as an air vent, using ¼” inch diameter straw, tube or dowel. Apply Release Agent MR150 to all surfaces. Note: If model is porous (i.e., wood, plaster, concrete, stone, pottery) it will need to be properly sealed prior to applying release.

STEP 4 Prepare and Pour 1st Half of RTV Mold Rubber— (See Step 3 on Page 2) Allow RTV to cure at 77F. STEP 5 Prepare and Pour 2nd Half of RTV Mold Rubber After RTV mold rubber has cured for 16-24 hours, invert mold and carefully remove clay without separating the model from the mold rubber. Next, place cured rubber with model back into mold box and apply Release Agent MR150 to all surfaces. Mix and pour 2nd Half of the mold.

STEP 6 Demold RTV Mold Rubber After 2nd Half of RTV mold rubber has cured for 16-24 hours, remove the model from both halves. Remove tube used for making the pour hole. STEP 7 Prepare Mold for Casting If needed apply release agent to mold rubber. Reassemble both halves of the mold rubber by aligning the negative and positive keys together. Use mold straps or heavy rubber bands to hold mold together. Mix and pour casting material. Demold casting when ready.

SILICONE RTV RUBBER—Tin R-1120 Clear Silicone is two-part (A+B), Condensation Cure (Tin Catalyzed), room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) rubber. This system is specifically formulated for applications where optical clarity is required. It is used for potting, encapsulation and special effects. Cured rubber can easily be processed into simulated shattered or broken class.

Pre-Cured Blocks—R-1120 provides an optically clear rubber glass but its long cure cycle for thick casts (4-6 inches) may take up to a week to cure. We’ve prefabricated cured 25lb blocks that are easily broken up to customized sizes.

SILICONE RTV RUBBER—Platinum TECH—Working with PLATINUM RTV Platinum RTVs (Addition Cure) are excellent tooling rubbers that produce high strength molds or parts with long library (storage) shelf life and dimensional stability (low shrinkage). These systems solidify with the appropriate amount of catalyst without any moisture and will deep-section cure within a closed system. Hardness ranges from 10 to 80 Shore A.

Cure Inhibition—Non Cure Platinum RTVs will not cure over certain surfaces. A contaminating surface is easily identified because liquid RTV will remain gummy and tacky after required cure time. Below is a list of possible inhibiting substances:

• Amines—Epoxy • Acetone, MEK • Adhesive Tapes • Bondo, Paints, Solvents • Condensation Cure (Tin RTV) R-1000 • Clay—Sulphur Based

Block of Clear Rubber Glass Inhibiting substances continued……

• Chlorinated Solvents • Composites—Pre Preg • Cyanoacrylate Adhesive—Super Glue • Gel Coats—Polyester • Gloves made of Latex • Heavy Moisture • Latex • Sulfur-Cured, Organic Rubber • Some Urethanes—TDI

A pretest is recommended when compatibility of the form’s surface is in question. Apply a small amount to a localized area and check if rubber is tack free after required cure time. If surface is inhibiting cure, clean area thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol and seal it with several coats of an acrylic lacquer based sealer or clear coat —allow drying between coats. Run another pretest. **Mold Master Solution is available to help with mild inhibition.
