The Japanese rap pioneer and activist ECD, who passed away on January 24, 2018, was neither the earliest nor most commercially successful rapper, and he would have eschewed calling himself a leader of any protest group. Nonetheless, he was what Gramsci would have called an organic intellectual of the working class. The frankness of his music, writing, and performances touched his audiences at an affective level, connecting them to the movements in which he participated. This article looks back at his life, which embodied the worlds of hip-hop, contentious politics, and the working class. It also examines his songs, which not only convey a vivid account of his life, but also reflect his personal and political concerns as well as the ambience of street protests. ECD was a key figure in the development of the underground hip-hop scene, organizing events that allowed it to take root and be lifted into commercial viability. He was on the front lines of several Japanese social movements—anti-Iraq War, anti-nuclear power, anti-racist, pro-democracy, and anti- militarization. He wrote protest anthems, inspired Sprechchor, performed at protests, and helped to establish a new mode of participatory performance, which engaged protesters more fully. His sheer presence at demonstrations, constant and reliable, energized and reassured protesters. Part I describes his years as a hip-hop pioneer, and Part II portrays his role in Japanese social movements of this century. Abstract

History tends to memorialize the stars andleaders, yet both musical and social movementsare also made possible by people who work inthe background, organize, seed trends, andotherwise help make things happen. TheJapanese rap pioneer and activist ECD, whopassed away on January 24, 2018, was neitherthe earliest nor most commercially successfulrapper, and he would have eschewed callinghimself a leader of any protest group.Nonetheless, he was what Gramsci would havecalled an organic intellectual of the workingclass. The frankness of his music, writing, andperformances touched his audiences at anaffective level, connecting them to themovements in which he participated. Thisarticle looks back at his life, which embodiedthe worlds of hip-hop, contentious politics, andthe working class. It also examines his songs,which not only convey a vivid account of hislife, but also reflect his personal and politicalconcerns as well as the ambience of streetprotests. When the family of ECD (Ishida Yoshinori), theJapanese rapper and activist, announced thathe had passed away from cancer on January 24,2018, the music and activist worlds let out acollective groan. Having started in themid-1980s, ECD was one of Japan's firstrappers and an important figure in thedevelopment of the underground hip-hop scene.Today, Japanese hip-hop is an established andrecognized part of the music industry, with itsown show on terrestrial television (FreestyleDungeon) and visibility in radio, magazines,satellite television, and web TV. In doing so, he helped to

establish new forms of protest performancethat continue today. Political theorist IkuoG o n o i(https://twitter.com/gonoi/status/956400501884575744) credited his constant presence indemonstrations with creating a “liberalmoment” mixing culture and politics. A highschool dropout with a philosophical take onsocial movements,2 he was what Gramsci wouldhave called an organic intellectual, whoarticulated the concerns and stances of theworking class in his music, writing, andperformances.

Yet despite this outpouring of recognition forhis contributions to Japanese hip-hop andprotest culture, material success eluded ECDduring much of his life. Although he had arecord contract between 1994-2003, for manyyears he earned his living supporting backstageoperations. His lack of mainstreamsuccess was immaterial to the admiration andimportance that he held in the community.

This article examines the life and songs ofECD—a pioneering rapper-activist who was nota conventional star, yet whose loomingpresence impacted the course of events. Heembodied the worlds of hip-hop, contentiouspolitics, and working-class life, reflecting their

struggles for recognition. The frankness of hismusic and writing impacted audiences at anemotional level, and in turn, connected them tomovements he championed. His story is that ofa man who held firm to his beliefs in a societythat eschews confrontation. It is also anillustration of the ways in which the artists whomost greatly impact movements are notnecessarily the biggest stars. Part I describeshis years as a hip-hop pioneer, and Part IInarrates his role in Japanese social movementsof this century.

Part I: ECD, hip-hop pioneer, 1982–2003

A punk fan, ECD was introduced to hip-hop in1982 when he read an interview about JohnnyLydon that mentioned Grandmaster Flash andt h e F u r i o u s F i v e ’ s(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PobrSpMwKk4) “The Message (1982).”

He began toexperiment with rapping as an actor in a troupeperforming rock musicals, singing songs byDavid Bowie in translation. Seeing the hip-hopfilm Wild Style in 1983 inspired him, and hebegan frequenting Cisco Records in Shibuya,collecting hip-hop records like AfrikaB a m b a a t a a ’ s P l a n e t R o c k(https://open.spotify.com/track/3uy0jtkM8QYVTsBazkli1x?si=6QOfWn0jREixYIjbPTmhcg)(1982).

R u n - D M C ’ s “ W a l k T h i s W a y(https://open.spotify.com/track/4lRdpZYTwaPpuKpquO6bo3?si=uBlbQg-PTXi6cX5NqRyKTQ)”(1986) is often credited with bringing hip-hopto mainstream attention in the US and aroundthe world. When the group came to Japan in1986, ECD attended the show. Chikada Haruo,Itō Seikō, and Tinnie Punx performed as thewarm-up acts. The concert pamphlet containedan advertisement for Chikada’s newly formedhip-hop label, BPM, which triggered ECD topursue rapping himself. He made a demo tapeusing a sample of a riff by the 1970s rock groupMurahachibu and began working for Chikada’s

office. In 1987, he won a contest sponsored byVestax, rapping over a reggae beat. He beganperforming in clubs like Shibaura Ink Stick andtoured as a warm-up act for Chikada’sVibratones. He judged several rap contests, atwhich he met the up-and-coming acts whowould become prominent in the 1990s, such asRhymester, Twigy, Gaku-MC, and Scha DaraParr. In 1989, he performed as an opening actfor Japan tours of top American hip-hop artistsof the day such as Public Enemy, JungleBrothers, DJ Red Alert, and Queen Latifah, andtraveled to New York as a representative of hislabel, Major Force

, at the New Music Seminar.He also began organizing the hip-hop clubevent, Check Your Mike, at clubs like RoppongiInk Stick, Yoyogi Chocolate City, andShimokitazawa Zoo. 5

Songs of the 1980s–90s

ECD’s political concerns were evident from hisearly days. His first, single, “Pico Curie(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz0Cv4WSFYE)” (Major Force, 1989

), reflected hisworries about radioactive fallout and nuclearpower following the Chernobyl disaster. Partlyinspired by Japanese reggae pioneer RankinTaxi (who, like ECD, became a constantpresence in protests), ECD rapped over areggae beat. He also rapped about the historyof global racism as a consequence ofe x c e p t i o n a l i s m ( i n “ R a c i s t ,(https://open.spotify.com/track/3slRvbJ6yCcYnj6PIBqHu6?si=POTq0bGbSumUXLU8kqNJIQ)”1993) and the omission of the NanjingMassacre from Japanese history textbooks.

Another distinctive feature of ECD’s tracks washis sampling of Japanese pop for musicalbackground to his rapping, well before thecurrent international vogue in retro-Japanesepop music. He sampled the funky disco track“ V i b r a t i o n(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7RpDr7njC0)” by Kasai Kimiko (1977), formulating it into“ V i b r a t i o n(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH2tNAoP7rY)” (1995), and he released CD mixes ofJapanese pop under the title Private Lesson.7

ECD’s best-known song is probably “ECD noLonely Girl ft. K. Dub Shine” (ECD’s LonelyGirl), based on a 1983 song performed by thei d o l s i n g e r S a t ō(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCHq3Llq6YA) Yuri, with music credited to TsutsumiKyōhei. The journalist Takahashi Yoshiakiattributes the revival of interest in Japanesepopular music to this song.

I n S a t ō ’ s “ L o n e l y G i r l ,(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCHq3Llq6YA)” the protagonist is a young woman,imagining herself saying goodbye to a loverwho has discarded her for a woman apparentlyof higher socioeconomic standing; she says shewill “see him off” as he goes off to a partywithout her, leaving her like a “doll with a lostscrew.”8

In the chorus, she denies that she’slonely or sad, claiming that she just likes beingalone. She’s not crying; it’s just that the wind ishard on her eyes.

ECD and K Dub Shine’s “Lonely Girl” (1997(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQzH1ENCHhc)) takes the opposite view to these lyricsto address the teenagers who hang aroundShibuya and date rich, older men for money tobuy luxury goods

(dubbed enjō kōsai). ECDtells them that they’re being “consumed likefood” and “cut down as saplings,” and that theyshould “hurry up and stand up.” K Dub Shine

paints a more explicit picture of these “X-ratedlost lambs” with their tanned skin, lightenedhair, and color contacts, having sex in pursuitof products by “Fendi, Versace, D.K.N.Y.”

The song became more broadly known throughan answer song by pop singer Katō Miliyah( “ D e a r L o n e l y G i r l ,(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNB6TF761Tw)” 2005), in which she presents herperspective as a high school student herself,hanging out in Shibuya (“Don’t treat me like achild, . . . don’t make facile analyses").10 It roseto no. 15 on the Oricon charts. In December2017, Katō released a new version, “Shin YakuD e a r L o n e l y G i r l(http://hd.yinyuetai.com/uploads/videos/common/E515015FC41953F393F81AECD3655FB0.mp4?sc=17d1927946697319),” with ECDsupplying the guest verse. Revisiting Shibuyaas a twenty-nine-year-old, she talks to herteenage self (“You’ll get hurt, and you’ll getstronger”).11

Mass vs. Core (1995)

In 1994, Japan experienced a “J-Rap boom,” asa light-hearted, television-ready, J-pop-like formof rap, complete with comedic sketches andattractive female pop idols, achieved mass-market attention. Scha Dara Parr ft. OzawaKenji’s “Konya wa bugii bakku” (Boogie BackT o n i g h t ,(http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x70nfb%20)1994) and East End x Yuri’s “Da.Yo.Ne(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF99pK_go9g)” (Isn't That Right, 1994) became big hits.“Da.Yo.Ne” was so popular that East End x Yuriwere included in Kōhaku Uta Gassen, the long-running year-end program on NHK with

enormous ratings, in 1995.

East End x Yuri’s “Da.Yo.Ne(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF99pK_go9g)”(1994)

This newfound renown of poppy J-Rap was notwelcomed by the many Japanese hip-hopperswho populated the underground sceneexemplified by Check Your Mike. They felt itwas necessary for Japanese hip-hoppers toappreciate the culture behind hip-hop—thecompetition, the confrontation, the realness,the blackness, the maleness—that was valuedby the underground scene. They consideredpoppy rap to be an inauthentic, sanitizedsellout and were particularly repelled by thepresence of female pop-idol Yuri in EastEnd.

As ECD explained to me, “We, theunderground and the street—we were the realhip-hop. We weren’t going to kowtow to themasses” (ECD, interview with the author,Suginami-ku, Tokyo, December 29, 2008). [We’d say,] ‘We’re not J-Rap! We’rerapping in Japanese, so we’re Japanese hip-hop,Japanese rap [nihongo rappu].’”

In response, ECD composed the Japanese hip-h o p c l a s s i c , “ M a s s t a i c o r e(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcpGBKSujos)” (Mass vs. Core, ft. You the Rock and

Twigy, 1995), a defiant piece that drew thebattle lines between mass commercialpopularity and hardcore hip-hoppers.13 Hearticulates the core values and captures thespirit of the underground in his lyrics,declaring the “live and original flavor” that heand his buddies were “playing non-stop, allnight” in a crowded basement couldn’t be“heard on the radio or in a conveniencestore.”14

As Cypress Ueno remarked, “When someonewould say to me in school, ‘Yeah, I know hip-hop. “Da.Yo.Ne,” right?’ I felt that [these lyrics]spoke for everything we felt.”

I t was this att i tude, this swel l of theunderground, that led ECD to perhaps his mostremembered role in hip-hop, as the organizer ofThumpin’ Camp.

Thumpin’ Camp

Thumpin’ Camp was the first large-scale hip-hop festival in Japan, a legendary event thattook place on July 7, 1996 in Hibiya YagaiOngakudō (outdoor amphitheater). As itsorganizer, ECD showcased underground, club-based hip-hop, in opposition to pop-oriented J-Rappers like Scha Dara Parr or East End x Yuri,whom he didn’t invite.

Just the fact that it was the first large-scaleshowcase of Japanese underground hip-hopwould have been enough to give Thumpin’

Camp a place in pop-history lore. The sell-outcrowd validated the underground hip-hopscene; many of the hip-hoppers of the followinggeneration, who were teenagers at the time,c i t e T h u m p i n ’ C a m p a s a m a j o rinspiration.

ECD also made sure that a videoand album of the concert would be madeavailable, in the tradition of Woodstock. Thismedia created an archive that could bewatched by hip-hop fans outside of the Tokyoarea, where hip-hop was not so widely diffusedat the time. As the site Backflow recently wrote(https://blog.kaerucloud.com/entry/sanpincamp), “In those days, there was no internet, and B-boys17 in the regions depended on hip-hopmagazines for information, reading them fromcover to cover until there were holes in thepages. . . The videotape (of Thumpin’ Camp). . .sold like hotcakes, a real high-quality item hadreached hungry hip-hop junkies from all overthe nation.” It gave the youth of Nagoya,Osaka, and cities further afield, who wouldhave had to go to Tokyo to see a live Japaneserap show at the time, a model of hardcorer a p p i n g(http://www.riddimonline.com/archives/13018)in Japanese.

The buzz around the event buoyed business forJapanese hip-hop, as artists from the eventwere given more performance opportunitiesaround the country. But sometime afterThumpin’ Camp, ECD himself began towithdraw from the hip-hop scene, partlybecause that scene was becoming lesssubcultural. “I’d been saying that the hip-hopscene was underground, but once groupsstarted signing with major labels, I felt that Ididn’t really want to go mainstream; I wantedto remain in an underground scene. That scenewas no longer hip-hop, but more in live houses”(small clubs with live performances; ECD,interview, 2008). He’d already had connectionsin this underground scene of hardcore punkand experimental musicians; since around1992, he had been performing with Kimidori, agroup of rappers with an entourage of hardcore

punkers. A high-school dropout from a working-class family, ECD seemed more comfortablewith the company: “they were all working class,doing manual labor by day, going to live houseson the weekends” (ECD, interview, 2008). Thissocial status was in contrast with someJapanese hip-hop performers and fans in themid-1990s, many of whom came from middle-or upper-class families and had a collegeeducation. He also fell into alcoholism, a lowp e r i o d w h i c h h e d e s c r i b e s i n h i sautobiographical novel, Shitten in the Park(https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E5%A4%B1%E7%82%B9%E3%83%BB%E3%82%A4%E3%83%B3%E3%83%BB%E3%82%B6%E3%83%BB%E3%8 3 % 9 1 % E 3 % 8 3 % B C % E 3 % 8 2 % A F -ECD/dp/4872339592/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF 8 & q i d = 1 5 1 9 3 3 2 0 5 9 & s r = 8 - 1 -fkmr0&keywords=%E5%A4%B1%E7%82%B9+in+the+park) (B lunder in the Park ,2005).18 When his record contract with Avexexpired around 2003, he set up his own label,Final Junky, and produced his recordingsindependently. Free from the censorship of themusic industry,19 he would find it easier topursue politically contentious material. Hegradually faded from the hip-hop scene andcontinued to perform in underground livehouses. But pol i t ical events, and hisparticipation in them, would transform hislegacy.

Part II: ECD as activist and musician,2003–2018

Sound demos against the Iraq War,2003–2004

In 2003, just days before the Iraq War began,ECD attended his first protest, which was infront of the U.S. Embassy. However, he foundthat “the road to the Embassy was completelyblocked, and we couldn't get near it. . . I gotangry that a road that you can normally usefreely was blocked. I felt a switch in me go on. .. I decided at that point that I was going to

participate, be it by demonstrations or anyother method” (ECD 2007, 176). He ran intoartist Ishiguro Keita, who invited him to join agroup that was designing "a new kind ofdemonstration that would be more stylish(kakkoii)" (ECD, interview with the author,December 22, 2011).

Demonstrat ions against the wars inAfghanistan and Iraq had been organized since2001 by Chance ! and i t s successororganization, World Peace Now.

Theirorganizers tried to control the flow of people,placards, and sounds of the protest and weredeferential to the police, which alienated manyof the protesters who had come to express theirfrustrations about the wars. Furthermore, thelack of style was a problem. As ECD explained(https://miyearnzzlabo.com/archives/30723),“In order to participate in protests, a protesterhas to go from someone who is looking [at theprotest] to someone who is being looked at[participating in the protest.] . . . When you gounderneath the pedestrian bridge [at MeijiJingū] and turn into Park Avenue (Kōen Dōri) inShibuya, a lot of people are watching you. . . If[the protest] doesn’t look good there, it won’traise your morale.”

A collective of musicians, writers, designers,students, and others came together to formAgainst Street Control (ASC). ECD and Ishigurowere among its members. Unlike World PeaceNow, ASC’s demonstrations were about takingback urban space in Tokyo, which wasbecoming increasingly controlled throughsurveillance and the exclusion of the homelessin favor of commercialism (Hayashi andMcKnight 2005). Its slogan was rojō kaihō,reminiscent of “Reclaim the Streets” from theBritish movement of the late 1990s and early2000s. ECD believed that “liberating the roadis itself very political.” He explained, “Byframing the war in the Middle East as ‘a war onterror,’ the Bush administration converted thedebate from ‘war vs. no war’ to ‘siding with theU.S. or siding with terrorists.’ If you didn’t

want to support the American war on terror,you were siding with terrorists. How can theyforce us into such a choice? I wasn’t putting upwith that. I didn’t support the American war; Ifelt sympathy for the Middle Easterners. So itwas fitting to use a nonviolent sound demo todisturb the order of the road. We felt, let's gowild.” (ECD, email communication, December30, 2011). The Koizumi administrationsupported the U.S. war and sent Japaneset r o o p s(https://www.theguardian.com/world/2003/jul/26/iraq.japan) there despite fierce publicopposition (ECD et al. 2005, 130). The road wasa space emblematic of national hegemony;dancing in the street was symbolic oppositionto this national hegemony and its acts.

ASC’s first demonstration took place on May10, 2003, in Shibuya. A so-called “sound demo,”it featured a truck, packed with speakers withDJs and musicians performing on it. The street-party atmosphere, with dancing behind thetruck, made it easier for people to participatein demonstrations, while the sheer volume ofsound captured people’s attention.

ECD participated in the sound demos as a saxplayer in TCDC (Transistor Connected DrumCollective), led by Oda Masanori. Playingdrums and acoustic instruments, this bandmarched with the demonstrators, encouragingthem along with sound and occasionallyshouting slogans. Run with a philosophy ofstrategic amateurism, in which nothing wasrehearsed and anyone could join in, TCDC wasa forerunner of the drum corps which came toaccompany many protests after 3.11 (OdaMasanori, interview with the author, Koganei,August 16, 2012).

A turning point was the sound demo on July 19,2003. With DJs including Eye of the Boredoms,the demonstration attracted between 700 and1000 participants, who moshed behind thetruck while surrounded by riot police. Suddenlyan altercation erupted and the riot police

intervened. As ECD described, "The people infront of me were knocked down like dominoes.At the same time, the riot police came towardus, trampling over those who fell” (ECD 2007,178). Several people were arrested—a big dealin Japan, as an arrestee can be held for 23 dayswithout an indictment. As ECD was picking uppeople who had been knocked down, he hearda protester yell, “We’re not the kind of guyswho’ll do as we’re told” (言うこと聞くような奴らじゃないぞ). The words stuck in his head.

(Yeah, Yeah, 1967). ECD describes ther i o t o u s a t m o s p h e r e o f t h e s o u n ddemonstration, recalling the "racket in thestreets with Oda Masanori," his cohorts beating"oil cans . . . for three hours." He criticizes thepolice for their violence at demonstrations,calling them “hooligans with a bad attitude”(Mōri 2009, 186). As ECD recounted onDommune on September 1, 2015, theaggress ion of the pol ice at the 2003demonstrations made him feel that “the policewere the guys who weren’t doing what theywere told.” Declaring the streets "liberated," heencourages demonstrators to “fight back, fightback.”

Matsumoto Hajime’s Shirōto no Ran (Revolt ofthe Laymen), a used-goods chain, was behindthe first massive antinuclear protest after theFukushima accident, unexpectedly attracting15,000 protesters to Kōenji on April 10, 2011, am e r e m o n t h a f t e r t h e c r i s i s h a dstarted.

Subsequently, Shirōto no Ran helddemonstrations once a month throughSeptember 2011. These demonstrationsfeatured sound trucks, with punk rockers onone and a DJ/sound system on the other, as wellas ambulatory chindon band Jintaramūta,drummers, and folk singers. Unlike the 2003sound demos, which were dominated by DJs,the center of attention was the rappers andsingers, who not only performed on top of thetruck but also spoke directly to the audience.These performers included Rankin Taxi, Rumi,and on the June 11 and September 11 protests,ECD. Each of these protests, in Shinjuku, drewbetween 15,000 and 20,000 participants.

In the sound demos of 2003, ECD hadparticipated by walking along with OdaMasanori’s group, playing the sax; this mannerof participating fit with the sound demos,whose primary mode of contention was to takeup sonic and physical space as a symbolic, anti-hegemon ic ac t . I n the an t inuc l ea rdemonstrations and beyond, the protestersmade specific claims, and ECD’s role shifted tothat of a rapper who could communicate thoseclaims and command attention. In the June 11,2011 Shirōto no Ran demonstration inShinjuku, he engaged in some call-and-response patterns, but primarily performed hissongs about the nuclear issue, such as“Recording Report, Hangenpatsu Remix" (Anti-N u c l e a r R e m i x )(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z04k_DBI1j4), which he posted on YouTube on April 18.

The opening repeats the phrase, "Toketarashiizo, moreteta rashiizo" (There seems tohave been a meltdown; [radioactive water]seems to have been leaking), articulating whatmany suspected but TEPCO was then denying:TEPCO only admitted to a melt-through on May24, and the government did not confirm the fullmeltdowns at three reactors until June 7. ECDrailed about the lack of reliable information anda parent’s worries over the impact of radiationon children:

While this recording was never commerciallyreleased, many protesters became familiar withit on YouTube. The next demonstration in which ECDperformed—Shirōto no Ran’s demonstration inShinjuku on September 11, 2011—marked aturning point for sound demos. Twelveprotesters were arrested around the soundtrucks. As ECD said, "People got arrested forbullshit reasons. My acquaintance said thepolice suddenly yelled, 'You're pushing thatgirl,' then handcuffed him. It's harassment"(ECD, interview, 2011). Some activists began tosour on sound demos, not only because thepolice were targeting them, but also becausetheir loud music, subcultural music fans, andinevitably, beer drinkers made the demo lookmore like a street festival than a seriouspolitical protest. “Sound demos are good forattracting people, but more and more peopleare now thinking that they’re no longernecessary. It is hard to avoid the criticism thatsound demos are just entertainment. You haveto make it more serious” (ECD, interview,2011). ECD began to wonder if the more stoicmodel followed by TwitNoNukes, whichconsisted solely of call-and-response patterns

to drums, was more effective.

TwitNoNukes demonstrations

TwitNoNukes was a monthly demonstration inShibuya, founded by Hirano Taichi andorganized through Twitter. Beginning with itsfirst demonstration on April 30, 2011, itattracted about 1,000 people each time, and iteventually spawned local versions throughoutthe country. ECD participated as an ordinaryprotester

in many protests and was often seenpushing his baby daughter in a stroller. He lenthis booming voice to “creating the atmosphere”for the demonstration: “at first, everyone wasstill hesitant to raise their voices. Someone wasleading calls with a megaphone, but if you werefar away from it, you couldn’t hear it. So as arapper, as someone with a loud voice, I’d leadthe call with my unamplified voice, so thatparticipants would feel freer to raise their ownv o i c e s .(https://miyearnzzlabo.com/archives/30723)”Protesters who marched along found himinspiring: “You walk with him, and you, too, areyelling from your diaphragm” (@ttuncut,January 29, 2012). ECD thought that the drumswere helping to keep the protesters walkinga n d e n c o u r a g e t h e m t o j o i n i n t h eSprechchor—“the words can mesh with therhythms” (ECD, interview, 2011). By December2011, he noticed that protesters had becomecommitted and strong.

When he couldn’t attend TwitNoNukes’sdemonstration in December 2011, he sent aYouTube video in which he rapped a cappella(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GJl6VJIau8) “Baby Cart and Placard,” a song dedicated tothe committed protesters that he saw atdemonstrations. He later uploaded a fullerv e r s i o n o n t o S o u n d c l o u d(https://soundcloud.com/ecd-1/ecd). Saying thathe feels unsettled when he can’t attend aprotest, he captures their ambience—the bustleof shoppers, the cheers and jeers of passersby,

Metropolitan Coalition against Nukes (MCAN)

The TwitNoNukes demonstrations led naturallyto the protests that developed in front of theprime minister's residence (Kantei-mae kōgi),organized by the Metropolitan CoalitionAgainst Nukes (MCAN). Protesters shoutedcall-and-response patterns, accompanied bydrums, in front of the buildings housing thepoliticians responsible. These protests beganon March 29, 2012, and as of this writing, havecontinued to take place every Friday eveningfor the past six years. At their peak in June2012, they attracted as many as 200,000participants per session, with lines ofprotesters winding all over the governmentd i s t r i c t o f K a s u m i g a s e k i . E C D

Back on the sound truck: antinucleardemonstrations, July 2012–2015

In summer 2012, Noma Yasumichi, an editorand activist with MCAN, persuaded ECD toreturn to performing on top of a sound truck atdemonstrations. By then, a new style ofSprechchor was taking hold, whereby rapperswere rapping Sprechchor in rhythm overmusical tracks. The protesters, many of whomhad marched silently in 2011, were nowshouting back, encouraged by the beats. Therappers and music were enabling theseprotesters to vocalize their claims at exactlythe time when Japanese citizens needed toparticipate more fully in the political process.As a participant-observer of these protests, Ifelt that the rappers and the act of shoutingthese Sprechchor conveyed a sense of politicalagency. It was a new and energizing type ofprotest performance, and it has becomeestablished as a common practice in Japaneseprotests which continues to the present

day.27 The timing coincided with renewed angerover the restarting of two reactors at the ŌiNuclear Power Plant. ECD,2012)Unlike the Shirōto no Ran protests, whichcentered on pre-written songs, these soundtruck performances centered on call-and-response patterns. All three rappers wereparticipants in TwitNoNukes protests and werefamiliar with Sprechchor. They shared anintuitive sense of the dynamics of trading callswith the protesters, and as a participant-observer, I felt that they varied and volleyedthem effectively with the protesters and eachother. Instead of rapping entire pre-writtensongs, the rappers typically took lines orphrases from them and converted them intochants. For example, ECD would shout, “Yūkotokikaseru ban da, oretachi ga” (It’s our turn tomake them listen to what we say)—a quotefrom “Straight Outta 138” that references hisaforementioned 2003 anthem. The stylebecame the norm in sound demos, and ECDhimself performed in this manner in protests onSeptember 17, 2012, October 13, 2013, andFebruary 14, 2016.

This song appears on the rapper Dengaryū’ssecond album, B-kyū eiga no yōni (Like a B-Movie, 2012).

In his verses, Dengaryū spits outhis many frustrat ions with Japanesesociety—the lack of opportunities, self-servingpoliticians, the media serving as propaganda,and Japan’s dependent posture toward theUnited States, among other issues. His hookwas a clear homage to ECD:

We’re not the kind of pussieswho’ll do as we’re told

Dengaryū invited ECD to do a guest verse,saying that he was quite taken by ECD’s hook.ECD explained to him that the politicalsituation had changed. In 2003, to oppose thewar was to fight the geopolitical hegemonicorder; the philosophies underlining thoseprotests had anarchistic tendencies. But theantinuclear issue called for domestic policychange: “You can’t just call out for everythingto be torn down. There has to be someoneresponsible for overseeing nuclear powerplants all the way through decommission. . . Nomatter how much you dislike the government,you have to acknowledge it, and let them dowhat they have to do” (Kawachi 2015, 73). Itwasn’t enough to oppose through anarchy; onehad to act as a citizen to convince thelawmakers to change (ECD, Isobe, UCD,Dommune, September 1, 2015). He thereforetransformed his line to fit the political

circumstances:

As Dengaryū added, “The resulting lyric was sopersuasive. It made me think, 'He's totallyright.' It made me think about how I am goingto live in the future, and it encouraged me”(Dengaryū, interview with the author, Tokyo,December 21, 2012).

In his verse (from 3:04 below), ECD appeals tocitizens to speak up ("If we stay silent, we'll bekilled”). He blames the government for makingparts of Fukushima uninhabitable due toradiation, and he fears that radiation willcompromise people's health. He expressesanger toward the disdain that conservativefactions show to antinuclear protesters, quotingthe hikokumin (traitor) insult that they use.Most of all, ECD calls for citizens to make theirvoices heard—"sign pet i t ions, vote ,demonstrate." 3 0

But it wasUCD, the rapper of the activist organizationSEALDs (Students Emergency Action forLiberal Democracy, explained below), whoconverted ECD’s line into a popular call-and-response pattern at protests.

Countering racism, 2013–2018

In January 2013, Noma Yasumichi founded theCounter-Racist Action Collective (CRAC,originally known as Reishisuto Shibaki-tai), agroup dedicated to challenging the Associationof Citizens against the Special Privileges of theZainichi (Zaitoku-kai) and other neonationalistgroups that protest the alleged privileges ofethnic minorities in Japan, particularly residentKoreans. The Zaitoku-kai marched throughKorean neighborhoods like Shin-Ōkubo inTokyo, shouting "die" and "go home to Korea"at residents, children, shopkeepers, and fans ofthe Korean Wave (most of them ethnicallyJapanese) who shop for fan goods in theneighborhood. CRAC would blockade theirprogress, surrounding them or sitting in frontof them. By March 31, 2013, CRAC’s counter-demonst ra tors , a t about 600 , wereoutnumbering the Zaitoku-kai demonstrators(http://lite-ra.com/2014/09/post-431.html).

ECD was a reliable presence in these protests32;he was often on the front lines, sitting down infront of trucks, running after racistdemonstrators, shielding younger protestersfrom the police, and leading calls with hisbooming voice. Many protesters said that he

had inspired them to join the counter-protests(e.g., @89Tweet, July 14, 2013; @atcq1994,September 1, 2015). Given how confrontationalthese protests were, his inimitable presencewas a comfort. As one said, “At the counter-demonstration on June 30 [2013] in Shinjuku. .. I saw ECD from behind, and I felt safe and notat all afraid.” (@a_s_a_n_t_e, October 1, 2013).As the writer Lee Sinhae wrote, “I feltsupported that such a famous person [as ECD]would come to counter-protests, chasing themdown and raising his voice continuously”(rinda0818, September 24, 2014).

In the midst of the counter-protests againstracism, ECD and Illreme released “The Bridge(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYvCwIaw3JM)—Han-Reishisuto Remix” (Anti-RacistRemix, 2013), inspired by a photo of a youngwoman, shocked and crying at an anti-Koreandemonstration in Shin-Ōkubo on February 17,2013. I t i s a remix o f the t i t le t rack(https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00C21WS3W/ref=dm_ws_tlw_trk10) from his album, TheBridge: Asu ni kakeru hashi (The Bridge toTomorrow, 2013), which reflects his feelingsabout the post-3.11 world. As ECD explained,“When many people started coming todemonstrations, I felt that the demonstrationswere a different kind of movement. I thought,‘Everyone is trying to cross a bridge, or in them i d s t o f c o n s t r u c t i n g a b r i d g e(http://amebreak.ameba.jp/interview/2013/04/003841.html).’” The lyrics depict a treacherousbridge, with no assurance that things will bebetter at the other end, but from which there isno turning back; one must keep going.

song33 of the anti-racist movement, directlycriticize the racist demonstrators in nouncertain terms. ECD takes the point of view ofthe young woman in the photo, capturing thehorror of hearing the Zaitoku-kai’s violent,racist rhetoric:

Meanwhile, Illreme takes the point of view ofsomeone recognizing an acquaintance amongthe Zaitoku-kai and trying to shake him intoself-awareness:

Protests against the Abe administration’spolicies

Another turning point in Japanese socialmovements was the lightning-speed passage ofthe Specially Designated Secrets Act (特定秘密保護法, hereafter Secrecy Law) on a midnightvote on December 6, 2013. Critics of the law,including the United Nations Human RightsCommissioner and the Japan Federation of BarAssociations, pointed out that its vaguewording made its scope unclear, and that stiffjail penalties for journalists, legislators, andother information seekers who publicize statesecrets would inhibit investigative research andendanger freedom of the press (Repeta 2014).

ECD was a constant presence in the manyprotests that took place over the two weeksprior to passage, including a 10,000-personrally in Hibiya on November 21, and a hastilyorganized protest in Ōmiya, Saitama(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReM7AKafgeo), the site of the only public hearing of thel a w , o n D e c e m b e r 4(http://photozou.jp/photo/show/1974250/193321207). On the evening of the vote, 15,000protesters assembled in Hibiya Park, and40,000 gathered in front of the Diet(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpRld5as4Y s ) , w h e r e E C D l e d s o m e c a l l s(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUZka00VQAASPAW.jpg:large).

At the November 6, 2013 protest against theSecurity Law in front of the Diet, ECDoverheard his punchline, “Yūkoto kikaseru banda, oretachi ga” (It’s our turn to make themlisten to us) being yelled by a group of youngpeople (@ecdecdecd, August 25, 2015). Thisgroup was the Students Against the SecretP r o t e c t i o n L a w(http://aikihon123.wix.com/students-against-spl) (SASPL), a network of students from MeijiGakuin University, International ChristianUniversity, and other universities who hadgotten together the night that the Secrecy Lawwas passed. SASPL held demonstrations inShinjuku on February 1 and on May 3, 2014, inwhich SASPL’s members rapped call-and-

response Sprechchor to hip-hop beats on top ofa sound truck. Among their most memorablecalls was ECD’s punchline. SASPL rapper UCD(Ushida Yoshimasa) felt it epitomized the spiritof democracy, assigning agency to theprotesters. It was picked up in newspapercoverage of the protests.

On July 1, 2014, the Abe Cabinet decided thatArticle 9 of the constitution could bereinterpreted to allow for “collective” self-defense, so that Japanese troops could be sentoverseas to help an ally anywhere in the world.This decision prompted 40,000 protesters(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GrqnOHzZVM) to gather in front of the prime minister’sresidence on June 30; 60,000 protested thefollowing day. As momentum built toward thepassage of the Security Bills, which wouldenable Japanese troops to be sent into overseascombat, SASPL reconstituted as SEALDs(Students Emergency Action for LiberalDemocracy) in May 2015. As Slater et al. pointout, the group framed its cause as theprotection of constitutional rights; theyopposed such policies of the Abe administrationas the reinterpretation of Article 9 in additionto the Secrecy Law (Slater et al. 2015). FromJune to September 2015, the group heldprotests every Friday in front of the Diet,attracting as many as 100,000 at a protest inmid-July. They first used a sound system towhich members would call out call-and-response pa t te rns , then sh i f t ed toaccompaniment by a drum corps. This changehelped to focus more attention on the words ofthe calls, allowing for new calls addressing thelatest developments to be readily invented andheard.

As with the antinuclear protests in front of theDiet, ECD was a constant presence, sometimesl e a d i n g c a l l s(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRBc-PATz

-w). By August, he was also working behind thescenes, helping to deal with the police. ECDand UCD struck an alliance, performingtogether on Dommune (September 1, 2015),and on the sound truck for MCAN’s antinucleard e m o n s t r a t i o n(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DUXK_OtVoAAqCnC.jpg) (December 5, 2015).

ECD’s line, “Yūkoto kikaseru ban da, oretachiga” (It’s our turn to make them listen to us),has remained a favorite call of the protests. Thecall has spawned several variations, such as“Yūkoto kikaseru ban da, kokumin ga” (It’stime to make them listen to the nation’speople). “Kokumin” (national people) is acontroversial word, as it is associated withmilitary rule during World War II and can implyan exclusivity to “Japanese,” thereby alienatingzainichi Koreans, Chinese, and others.However, this formulation stuck, as itunderlined the fact that the majority of voters,to which the Diet was accountable, opposed thereinterpretations of Article 9 and the SecrecyLaw. Several other formulations followed,including the more women-inclusive “watashitachi ga” (us) or “omae ga” (you).

ECD said that the chorus isabout the excitement of watching new rapperscome onto the Japanese hip-hop scene, fromthe time that he first saw Scha Dara Parr at acontest to the present day (Kawachi 2015). Thetrack, with its blues-rock instrumentation andcheering sounds, conveys the ambience of astadium arena. But the tone of the lyrics in thehook also suggests someone who has come toterms with the ups and downs of his life, withoptimism and gratitude for his experiences:

Some listeners have taken the first verse torefer to SEALDs, because it not only invokesthe protests in front of the prime minister’sr e s i d e n c e , b u t a l s o d e s c r i b e s t h eprotagonist—"a lucky guy who makes miracleshappen"—donning a suit and going to ameeting to discuss politics, just as SEALDs co-founder Okuda Aki had done in his appearanceat the Diet. ECD denies this inference wasintended, claiming that the song was written asa “wild delusion” (妄想) in late 2014, beforeSEALDs had been formed. Still, the last twolines of this verse—“I hurl my protests in frontof the prime minister”—could not have beenmore emblematic of that time.

The song also hints at concerns shared by someprotesters against the Abe administration,

following the passage of the Secrecy Law(2013) and the (then) anticipated passage ofthe Conspiracy Law (2017). While they areembedded within stories in the lyrics, ECDmakes a number of paranoid-soundingreferences to “avoiding the investigative net,”“shadowing detectives,” “wiretappingmachines,” and “registered facial recognition.”These comments echo not only ECD’scontinuing concerns about surveillance (whichhe had expressed as far back as the 2003 sounddemos), but also protesters’ concerns aboutheightened surveillance in the wake of theConspiracy Law. He also mentions “the rule ofU.S. organization,” a reflection of thediscomfort of many Japanese about postwarU.S. influence on Japanese foreign policy andmilitary buildup. Still, he declares, to acheering crowd on the anthemic track, that“the twenty-first century has only just begun.”

Swan song

Following his announcement of his cancer inSeptember 2016, ECD finished a number ofcreative projects, including his f inala u t o b i o g r a p h i c a l b o o k(https://www.amazon.co.jp/%E4%BB%96%E4%BA%BA%E3%81%AE%E5%A7%8B%E3%81%BE % E 3 % 8 2 % 8 A -%E5%9B%A0%E6%9E%9C%E3%81%AE%E7%B 5 % 8 2 % E 3 % 8 2 % 8 F % E 3 % 8 2 % 8 A -ECD/dp/4309026079) (his seventh, 2017) and ac o m p i l a t i o n a l b u m(https://www.amazon.co.jp/21%E4%B8%96%E7% B 4 % 8 0 % E 3 % 8 1 % A E E C D -ECD/dp/B01MY9YOZZ/) of his works since2000. In the middle of his cancer treatments,ECD recorded his last track, “Kimi toi t s u m a d e m o(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQhNns7hSx4)” (Together Forever Remix, 2017), as part

of a tribute album to actor and singer-songwriter Kayama Yūzō with remixes of hissongs by rappers Punpee, Rhymester, and SchaDara Parr, among others. The original musicfor ECD’s track was from Kayama’s 1965 hitsingle of the same name, which was featured inh i s f i l m , A r u p u s u n o w a k a d a i s h ō(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF0o6pmXZOw) (It Started in the Alps, 1966). It wasremixed by DJ Mitsu the Beats (of Sendai-basedhip-hop group Gagle), and a video was shotfeaturing fellow rappers Darth Reider, Kai onthe Mic , and Rino Lat ina I I . A shortd o c u m e n t a r y(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z_CF1ue0l8&feature=youtu.be&t=7m39s) shows ECDstruggling through physical weakness tocomplete the recording.

The original song, a sentimental and optimisticnumber about enduring love, provides a perfectbackdrop for ECD’s swan song, about theredemptive qualities of music. Conceding that“the sun will set” and “the long night is ahead,”he recalls his difficult childhood from a poorhome and the ups and downs of his life.However, he notes how music has saved him,from the moment it hoisted him, as a child, upto the top of a yagura in a bon dance, andthrough the pleasures of making andperforming music. Music, he says, gave him thehappiest moments of his life—until the finallines of the song, when he acknowledges hiswife. It seemed a fitting finale for a hip-hoppioneer who not only sampled Japanese popularsongs long before it was fashionable, but alsoexpressed exactly what he thought and felt inhis lyrics and performances.

Even in his weakened state, ECD followed themovements he cared about. During ademonstration opposing Abe’s policies inShinjuku on October 1, 2017, he appeared att h e s i d e o f t h e r o a d(https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1522727247825858&set=a.357096821055579.78162.100002657918379&type=3&theater),

cheering on the demonstrators as they marchedpast. The spectacle of this emaciated man, sodedicated to the cause despite physicalobstacles, touched many protesters, Theyc h e e r e d a n d g a v e h i m h i g h - f i v e s(https://twitter.com/kin_kim/status/956368244679499776) as they walked past. It was the lasttime that many protesters would see him.

History tends to memorialize the stars and

leaders, yet both musical and social movementsare also made possible by people who work inthe background, organize, seed trends, andotherwise help make things happen. ECD wasneither the earliest nor the most successfulrapper, and he would have eschewed callinghimself a leader of any protest group, as wouldmany Japanese movement l eaders .Nonetheless, he was an organic intellectual, inthe Gramscian sense, for underground scenesand left-wing causes, and his philosophy andpresence had a pronounced impact in bothareas. In hip-hop, he championed thecontentious, Do-It-Yourself spirit of theunderground, a philosophy that culminated inhis organization of Thumpin’ Camp, whichlifted underground hip-hop from relativeobscurity to commercial viability. He alsoanticipated the vogue of sampling olderJapanese pop, which is currently fashionable inboth Japan and Europe. He also laid bare thetrials and joys of his life in songs, books, andvideos, which not only captured the moment insocial movements but also connected him withreaders and listeners at an affective level. Thisaffective connection made him all the moreimportant when he was on the front lines ofseveral Japanese social movements—anti-IraqWar, anti-nuclear, anti-racist, pro-democracy,anti-militarization. Seeing him at the front,leading calls with his inimitable voice, was oneof the treats of going to a protest, as thethoughts and feelings in his writing wereprojected onto his performances. His sheerpresence , cons tant and re l i ab le a tdemonstrations, energized and reassuredprotesters. Whether in hip-hop or in protests,ECD was in the place to be.34

As a musician, ECD was highly unusual in theway that he held firm to his beliefs and didn’thesitate to communicate them, in his music,writing, physical presence, or actions. Japanesemusicians can face a backlash for engaging inpolitical issues, and their agencies and recordcompanies usually pressure them to keep awayfrom politics (Manabe 2015, Chapter 3). As

ECD said, “I saw a tweet saying that musiciansthat make political comments are third-rate.Musicians are said to speak truth to power, butwhen we do have a political message, we’retold, ‘Don’t say it.’ It’s strange that there is thiskind of criticism” (ECD et al., Dommune,September 1, 2015). As an independent artist,ECD had much more freedom than most artists,and he used this freedom to participate onmult ip le leve ls on the f ront l ines o fsociopolitical conflict. He wrote protestanthems, inspired Sprechchor, performed atprotests, led calls, and worked behind thescenes. Along with Akuryō, Noma, and ATS,and later, in collaboration with UCD, he helpedto establish a new mode of participatoryperformance at protests, which engagedprotesters more fully. He inspired youngerrappers, like Dengaryū and UCD, to becomepolitically engaged. As UCD noted, “ECD is themost politically engaged rapper, and he rapsconstantly about politics. I respect him for that”(Ushida Yoshimasa, interview with the author,Tokyo, August 20, 2015). His spirit lives on(https://twitter.com/nekomichic/status/971380855162617856) in Japanese protests, where hiscall, "It's our turn to make them listen to us,"continues to be heard in recent protests for aliving wage, against nuclear power, and forA b e ' s r e s i g n a t i o n(https://twitter.com/public4f/status/973178252205342720) in light of the deepening MoritomoG a k u e n(https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/03/12/national/politics-diplomacy/finance-ministry-admits-to-altering-moritomo-documents-says-r e f e r e n c e s - t o - a b e - a n d - w i f e - w e r e -deleted/#.WqbdL5PwaYU) scandal.

On a personal note, ECD was one of the firstpeople with whom I spoke about 3.11 and wasamong those who made me realize that theantinuclear movement—with all its implicationsfor self-censorship, societal and media-industrypressures, collusion, the fragility of democracy,and the roles that music can play in socialmovements—was the story to pursue. For that,

and for the impact he made on the world, Ithank him.

Thefollowing week, they held their own festival for Little Bird Nation at the same venue in Hibiya.16 This was said to me in conversation with not only ECD, but also MIC Clocks, Erone ofInfumiai Kumiai, and others. Thumpin’ Camp is also often mentioned in published interviewswith rappers, e.g. “さんピンCAMP (ECD×RYUZO),” Riddim Online - レゲエ、ヒップホップ、リアルミュージックフリーマガジン (http://www.riddimonline.com/archives/13018) (blog),accessed February 1, 2018.17 "B-boy" and "B-girl" originally referred to break (hip-hop) dancers. In the context of thearticle, the term seems to be referring to hip-hop fans more generally.18 The pun with "shitten" (blunder) is intentional.
