TRANSCRIPT
For many people the New Year is an occasion to
make resolutions about how to make the next 12
months better for themselves and their families. I
think the problem with New Year’s resolutions is that
it is often unrealistic to set a year-long goal. Let’s
face it usually by the time Easter comes around
almost all of our resolutions have fallen by the
wayside! I want to propose that you adopt the
following faith based resolutions for the next
month—that’s it. One month. Then if you think they
are helpful you can continue on from there. I just
think a month commitment is not only more realistic;
but much more likely to succeed as well.
So what are the resolutions I would suggest for a faith
filled New Year? You might be surprised!
1. Go Gadget Free. Take one night to turn off your
cell phone, computer, tablets and gizmos. Let’s
face it our need to log-in and obsessively check
every update and every email has become an
addiction in our culture. I see families out for
dinner with every one face down starring at a
screen either texting or scrolling as if the people
beside them weren’t there. UNPLUG. I hate to
break it to you, but you aren’t that important and
knowing that Suzy just bragged about her kids
again on Facebook or Instagram can wait till the
morning.
2. Distance Yourself from the Negative. I don’t
mean to sound harsh but sometimes you have to
distance yourself from negative friends and
situations. I’m not saying to stop loving folks
just because they are negative; but I am saying
that their negativity can rub off on you. It creates
stress and anxiety that you simply don’t need.
So, learn to either redirect your friend’s negative
comments and energy or make sure you regulate
how often you are with them. Same thing is true
of negative habits such as reliance on sarcasm,
blaming, and destructive behavior.
3. Look for Opportunities. Here’s an age old
spiritual problem: when one looks at the world
it’s easy to see ‘burdens’ rather than
opportunities. Look for the opportunities that
God gives you each and every day to grow and
witness to the faith within you. When it’s
reasonable to be mad and upset, see if there
might be an opportunity for you to offer
forgiveness and compassion. I recently gave a
sermon where I suggested that God is in the
commotion as well as in the calm. Could it be
that your current commotion is God providing an
opportunity for you to live out your faith in a
concrete and meaningful way?
4. Reclaim the Sabbath. Did you know that the
‘day of rest’ was given to a people who had been
slaves for hundreds of years and were forced to
work every day of their lives? For them the
Sabbath was not a restriction, but a gift. You
need to be intentional about your spiritual
welfare and it begins with worship. I often
reflect that as a coach I can tell my players and
parents to be somewhere at 6:00 in the morning
and they’ll do it. I can ask them to practice in
the cold and the rain and they’ll do it. I can ask
them to give up a weekend or an evening and
they’ll do it. God asks us for time as well.
Especially if you have kids do not instill in them
the idea that worship is not important or not
necessary.
Well here are four resolutions to chew on. Yes of
course I could have added many others: read your
Bible, do a good turn daily, fill out your Estimate of
Giving Card, floss etc…. . But perhaps these four
will either get you thinking about what kind of year
you want 2014 to be or inspire some additional
thoughts of your own. Here’s to a faith-filled New
Year!
Peace!

Internship Year
from Wesley Menke
Happy New Year! I am writing to you from sunny southern Arizona…Sierra Vista to be exact! Sheri,
myself, and the kids have been living here since August. I am doing my internship at Sierra Evangelical
Lutheran Church for one year. Sheri is also serving as the Youth and Family Minister. Our kids are enrolled
at the Shepherd’s Fold Childcare center, which is a ministry of the church, so they are close at hand during
the day. Chaz is three and Becca is four. We hope that Becca and Chaz will be ready to be a big sister and
brother for a new little Menke we are expecting the first week of July!
We have had a very good experience here for the past four months. I have been busy serving and learning at
the congregation. I preach regularly, help lead worship—which includes chanting, visit with people, and
spend lots of time learning what is entailed in pastoral ministry.
Some of you may remember that I am actually a native of Arizona having been born and raised in Sedona,
and attended Northern Arizona University. Go Lumberjacks! It was back in 2003 that I graduated from NAU
and moved to San Clemente to serve as the Youth and Family Minister and Spanish Teacher. That was over
10 years ago…a decade! Moving back to Arizona after so many years has been surreal at times.
When I meet clergy at synod gatherings there are often personal connections. For example, my former youth
minister served me communion at the Bishop’s Convocation this past October. It was difficult to hold back
the tears when, as Connie Rose-Kamprath who I had not seen since a teenager said to me, “The blood of
Christ shed for you.” I was so humbled to realize that I probably would not be where I was at that moment,
an intern pastor, if she had not striven to share the Gospel with me when I was a teenager! Afterwards we
talked and at first she had no idea who I was. Then she looked surprised and said, “Wait your Wes Menke?
You were so quiet!” We both laughed. You never know what difference or impact you will make on a
person’s life.
We are so thankful for the support and impact you as a congregation have made on our lives through this
seminary journey. All of those semesters of studying are now being put into practice, and it is a good feeling
to do so, and to see just how important and critical ministry is in people’s lives. It is a tremendous thing, to
attend to the soul, the deep questions, and life’s big moments. There’s no wonder it takes years of study and
preparation to do this stuff. I feel very fortunate not only for your support through seminary, but for the years
of training I received serving at Our Savior’s with Pastor Jeff. Though there is plenty for me to still learn on
how to be a pastor, I can’t help but think that I am starting off with such a tremendous head start having
learned from all of you! Thank you!
We hope to visit in 2014 and let you know how the rest of the Internship Year has gone. By the way, we’ve
enjoyed seeing pictures and reading about the 60th year anniversary of OSLC! Congratulations and blessings
on many, many, many more years of ministry.

Merry Christmas. Yes, it is still Christmas –
right up until January 6. Our Christmas Eve services
were beautiful and it is now time to get “back in the
swing” for the new year.
There are many people who offered their musical
gifts during the past month. We had musical
entertainment Sundays on the patio which was
enjoyed by all. We had special music at worship
services offered by talented singers, ringers,
instrumentalists and our children. We enjoyed a fun
and entertaining VeggieTales Christmas play
presented by our J.A.M. and Lil’ J.A.M. kids. We
sent carolers out into our community providing
holiday music to those who need a little holiday
cheer. In addition, we had musicians from Our
Savior’s who shared their musical gifts through
community groups - singing in Barbershop choruses,
community choirs and ringing in community bell
choir. I give many thanks to all those talented
musicians who made our Advent, Christmas Eve and
Christmas services wonderful worship experiences.
I would like to extend an invitation to become a part
of the music ministry. If you can sing, ring or play
an instrument, there is a place at Our Savior’s for
you to offer your musical gifts. Ask any member of
our team and they will tell you what a joy it is to
share the word of God through music.

Youth and Children’s Page
by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children’s Ministry
Moving On, and Remembering A Great Year 2013 was a great year for the youth ministry here at
Our Savior’s. Way back in January I was able to join
our 7th grade confirmation class on their servant
event to T.A.C.O. in San Diego as we served
breakfast to the homeless, this is always a powerful
experience. As the year progressed we continued our
outreach and service with the Souper bowl of caring,
The Welcome Inn, service at the Central City
Lutheran Mission in San Bernardino, as well as our
monthly dinners at Gilchrist House. I can’t thank our
host families enough for your gracious gifts to the
Gilchrist House Ministry.
Our groups worked together to raise funds for
various trips and events such as the Middle School
Winter retreat at El Camino Pines and our big High
School summer house boating trip, what a fantastic
week of worship, bonding and service! The Youth of
Our Saviors would like to again thank the
congregation for your wonderful support of all of our
fundraising events
Our youngest group for 3rd through 5th grade
students, the “Kids Club that meets on the first
Tuesday of each month, went to Sky High Sports in
January and had a blast! We will be attending our
second annual Kids Club Winter retreat at El Camino
Pines later this month!
Our Middle School group attended a winter retreat at
El Camino Pines in March. The Middle School group
has grown to a pretty impressive size and we are
having a great time learning about our faith as well
as simply having fun being young Christians.
Things don’t stop in the summer either; we had a
wonderful Vacation Bible School followed by
Vacation Day Camp and LRCC Beach Camp, many
good times had by all! The summer fun culminated
with Extreme Week, a week long tour of Southern
California amusement parks; yes it is exhausting, but
really fun!
Looking forward to 2014 there is much buzz in the
high school group as we plan our summer trip to the
Western States Youth Gathering! There were far too
many events and trips to list here, but suffice it to
say that 2013 was great and 2014 is shaping up to
be even better!
Thank you for your continued support of this
important ministry. Please let me know if I can do
anything in particular for you or your family, and
feel free to jump right in, we can always use more
caring adult ministers.
See you around the Youth Room,

Men's Breakfast of Champions
In 1933 an advertising representative for Wheaties, working for
mother company General Mills, had an opportunity to create a
sign for the stadium that hosted the Minneapolis Millers baseball
team. This was an afterthought of the monetary sponsorship that
General Mills had made for the team, a large advertising sign at
the ballpark. Off the cuff, he sketched a picture of the Wheaties
box and then after a brief pause, wrote one of the most prolific
advertising slogans. Considered one of the top 10 slogans in advertising history: "Wheaties - The
Breakfast of Champions"
The slogan refers to the suggested nutritional value that Wheaties provides to those who eat it. Hundreds
of athletes and teams have been on the boxes throughout the years. Some fun facts about the Wheaties box
and the people depicted:
Not until 1958 did the first athlete appear on the front of the box, as all previous were on the side. Bob
Richards, Track and Field Star, was the first.
The first person to be depicted on the box (side) was in 1934. Jack Armstrong. Sound vaguely
familiar? Not likely, since he was a fictional character.
Lou Gehrig was the first athlete to appear and that was also in 1934.
Again in 1934, the first female to appear was an aviator named Elinor Smith with the same year having
the first married couple, Martin and Osa Johnson. Also aviators.
The first female athlete appeared in 1935. Babe Zaharias. That was for her exceptional performance in
Track and Field. If you have heard of Babe, you may know she went on to be a prolific golfer. In fact,
she only started playing golf in 1935, after her appearance on the box.
Not only was Mary Lou Retton the first female athlete to appear on the front of the box, she made it on
there 3 times. There are only two others, since the inception of this concept, that have had their face on
there 3 times.
Wow! These Wheaties really seem to work!
"Breakfast of Champions" has been used by many people in many situations. In fact, I use it myself as I
depart from 7-11 many early mornings when I am working at home. When people see me carrying my
44oz Super Big Gulp of Diet Coke out of the store I say, "Diet coke, the breakfast of
champions." Sometimes I throw in the "It's not just for breakfast any more" to add another advertising
dimension to my morning. In fact it is for breakfast and in fact it is my "coffee" most every
morning. Why is this so strange to people that stand in line at Starbucks and pay $8 for a trenta, high
creamo, extra hot, low fat, no gluten, double shot Brazilian, South African, Chilean blend
coffee? Huh? Ok, I don't get it, but hey I am a diet coke for breakfast kind of guy. My wife has empathy
for those that look at me with distain since she dabbles in the Starbuck's offerings on occasion. Between
you and me, she likes the coffee at 7-11. No ventes. No trentas. Just small, medium and large. Well, in
the case of diet Coke, it is Big Gulp, Super Big Gulp and Extreme Big Gulp. So, technically, my Super
Big Gulp is a medium.
What do you have for breakfast that makes you a champion? On the second Saturday of each month, the
OSLC Men's Breakfast offers nutrition for one's body, mind and soul. We don't have Starbucks, but we
have strong coffee that gets brewing at 6:00am. We don't have Wheaties, but we have such culinary
delights as make-your-own breakfast burritos. (please substitute "Energy bars, smoothies with wheat grass
and tofu breakfast sausages" in case you need to when discussing your attendance at the Men's Breakfast
continued on page 7
7
with a significant other).
OK, we got the body covered, now what about
the mind and soul? I am not going to get all
philosophical here. The discussion lead by Pastor
Jeff is just that, a discussion. We are provided a
Bible text to read and we converse about it,
sometimes driven by questions the Pastor has put
together. We may stay on topic or we may
stray. Many stories we read have been heard by
few of us or not understood by others. Interesting
insights to various corners of the
Bible. Encouraged to think is what always comes
to my mind.
If you were at the services on December 15th,
you may have seen a quote, used during the
sermon, from famed philosopher Johannes
Mulligus. "People may get exactly what they
asked for, but it was not what they wanted." Out
of nowhere in the middle of an Our Saviors Men's
Breakfast, a striking commentary of expectations
and the human psyche was blurted out. BTW, I
heard that Mulligus will join us again at a future
breakfast. Many have asked, but do they really
want it?
As is the slogan of the Men's Breakfast says, "No
group hugs. No hand-in-hand singing. No
pressure." Please join us on January 11th at 0700
to 0830. If you want to help cook or just keep the
cooks company, please come at 0600. Coffee
will be brewing.

Re-gifting
Did you receive a gift for Christmas that you did not
need? Did you re-gift it to someone else? Re-
gifting, once frowned upon, has become an
acceptable practice in recent years.
Re-gifting has always been acceptable to God.
When blessed by God with more gifts than we need,
He asks us to share those gifts with others and
especially those in need. We also have the
opportunity to joyfully leave a final planned legacy
gift through our estate to our loved ones as well as to
the continued work of God’s church.
We call this type of re-gifting, planned giving. With
the help of our congregation’s gift planner, Greg
Shepherd, you will be shown ways that you can re-
gift to the church without reducing your gifts to your
loved ones. You will also learn ways to reduce
taxable estates and at the same time, be able to
provide for ministries for which you have a passion.
There will be a special event on Sunday February 9,
2014 at noon to talk about just such things. Lunch
will be provided, call the church office to get your
name on the list today.
To learn more, you may
contact Greg at:

Your Legacy!
Mark your calendars for Sunday, February 9, 2014 at
11:45am. That is when our congregation’s gift
planner Greg Shepherd from the ELCA Foundation
will present a workshop on "Becoming a Willing
Witness." Greg will cover the importance of
reviewing or establishing a will or trust, and how you
can bear witness to your faith through a Christian
preamble and legacy planning. Learn important
estate planning strategies such as "wealth
replacement" for preserving assets for your heirs.
There will also be an important discussion on how
new tax laws impact your gift planning.
