Testimonies

Year of training was a great year of growth in my life where God really humbled me. Before the year started I had my own business and knew a lot about management. But the lack of God’s character in my life was very visible in my work enviroment. Through the year God broke a performance mentality which was the cause of pride and many other things in my life. God showed me that I'm a son of the King and I don't need to strive to please Him. He loves me no matter what.

Danie Smit - South Africa

During my time as a student at the Training Centre I was able to complete my Bachelor of Theology through South African Theological Seminary (SATS). I completed the first year of the degree as part of the Creative Arts Academy course and was eager to continue as I had learnt so much from the first year and was impressed at the high standard SATS offered. A great benefit of SATS was that they gave credit towards the degree for each of the three Training Centre courses I did, making up half the credits needed to finish my degree. SATS was such a key part of my time in the Training Centre and God used it to develop my character, teach me perseverance and discipline, and through learning more about Him, ultimately brought me closer to Him.

Corrie Wetzler - Australia

“It is not about what I do but about who I am.” God is using Year of Training to show me that I am worth far more than anything I can ever do because I am His. My journey in the Koinonia Training Centre has and continues to be one of knowing God’s Father heart for me and that I am a daughter and not a slave. There are many times when I still fall back into forgetting how loved I am and strive to earn it, but in His grace God is continually showing me His love for me.

Searle Bissett - Zimbabwe

My School of the Word year was a journey with God where I came face to face with who I am and whose I am. I came to accept and embrace the unique person God lovingly made me to be and the Kingdom purpose He created me for, which is far greater than I could ever have imagined. God gave me knowledge, understanding and opportunities for His life-giving principles to become a reality for me. God brought healing and wholeness, increased my capacity for leadership and developed my character. I now do not just hear about the transforming power through the Word, I saw and experienced it for myself. It is an incredible freedom that comes through knowing and applying God’s truth in my life.

Koinonia Training Centre is affiliated internationally to Jubilee Training Centre, Maidstone, England (www.jubilee.co).

Year of Training is tailored to the group as well as to the individual and we do not run a rigid and repetitive programme.

Part of the course is studying the subjects provided by the South African Theological Seminary.

It is vital that all theory is followed by practical application, evaluation and correction.

Basic course breakdown is listed below:

“For I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me”

Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

Year Of Training offers credits towards a Bachelor of Theology degree and is awarded a Certificate in Christian Life.

Year of Training is a course with a difference…a unique and dynamic year of preparation for life and ministry. Not only does it include biblical and theoretical teaching, it focuses on character and leadership development through practical training. The year is geared towards maturing your faith as an individual and as part of a team. Initially your equipping deals with personal wholeness and biblical foundations which is established on understanding biblical principles and fostering your relationship with the Father. Equipping is followed by practical application and ongoing discipleship as you share accommodation with your fellow students and course leaders, making Year of Training more than just your average Bible School…it is a true foundation for life!Highlights during the first term include a two-week orientation, Leadership Training School, a 52 hour challenge, and an Amazing Race. Next we prepare you to take the message into the community. Courses include Master Management, Principles of Preaching, Dance and Drama, the Poverty Project and various community events. Finally we prepare you to lead and serve. You will face your fears, undertake local, national and international missions, and serve through schools work, youth ministry, community outreaches and practically helping local churches.

How does it work?Year of Training focuses on different and complimentary areas of student growth. Jesus’ ministry with His disciples is the model that we use to see the most effective growth in individuals. • Teaching – giving the biblical foundations and principles relating to all areas

of life and ministry. • Practical application – presenting opportunities to put into practice what

has been learnt. • Evaluation and correction – feedback is critical for development and

growth. Koinonia Training Centre’s Year of Training operates within a Resource Church context and students will be actively involved with Koinonia Christian Centre’s church life.

Observe • Understand • Apply - These three words sum up the heart of School of The Word. We believe the Bible is about real people in real places with real problems and our passion is to see you, the student, delve deep into the treasures of the Bible, let God’s Word speak for itself and graduate having a greater understanding of the whole counsel of God. Our aim is to allow the Word to lay solid biblical foundations, developing and maturing your character into all God has called you to within His Kingdom.

At the heart of everything, time together as family is key, so we work hard and play hard! Alongside the class lectures, there are a variety of trips and fun but challenging practical and community projects. By the end of the year you will have written your own Bible commentary and will be equipped with tools for a lifetime of exploring and applying the eternal truths of God’s Word.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and He doesn’t waste His breath.”Jim McCotter

Inductive study

During School of The Word the main approach we use is the method of ‘Inductive Study’, whereby you learn to use various tools to observe closely what the text really says, interpreting Scripture with Scripture. You will be encouraged to ask questions: ‘Who’, ‘What’, ‘Where’, ‘When’, ‘How’ and ‘Why’ and find answers together, learning from each other’s observations in a dynamic and interactive environment.

In lectures you will also receive in-depth teaching to help you gain a clear overview of each book and its major themes. You will then write a commentary based on your observations and the understanding you have gained. This inductive study process enables you to discover what is being said ‘there and then’ in order to know what it means ‘here and now’ for your life today.

Relationships and mentoring

School of The Word is a non-residential course but our ethos is firmly based on putting relationship before structure, so we strongly promote relationship-building within the course. This is facilitated at the start by a week of ‘Orientation’, where we go away together, spending time getting to know each other and building a sense of ‘family’. This is followed up by regular group relational time and a variety of other fun social events organised throughout the year.

As God reveals things to you through His Word, the course leaders will also be available to come alongside you, on an individual basis, to help you process what God has shown you.

Beyond the classroom

We believe that studying God’s Word is not about just developing ‘head knowledge’ but should make a difference to the way we live our lives. In order to facilitate character development, you will be encouraged during the year to serve in the church and the community in various ways and take part in practical projects as well as get involved in Koinonia ‘church life’. There will also be an opportunity during the year to put into practice all the biblical principles you have learned through a short-term mission!

Course timetable

School of The Word is a dynamic full-time non-residential course from Monday to Friday, which runs from January through to November each year. There are four terms during the year. We study each of the sixty six books of the Bible individually, with the Bible as our text book. There are generally books to be read and assignments to be completed each week, as well as other exciting trips and activities outside of these times. In the third term there is the highlight of a short-term mission!

You will also be encouraged to enter fully into the life of Koinonia Church through participating in cells and other church activities.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.“ 2 Tim 3:16 (NLT)
