“GIG”ing Up for 2019-2020
Are you looking for an extremely rewarding pro-
gram to be a part of at Christ Church?
We would love to have you join us for this upcoming
school year! We need volunteers to mentor one on one
with the children helping with homework. We also
need volunteers to sub for mentors and van drivers/
monitors. Please contact the Director Debbie Fodrie
([email protected] / cell:252-
675-8358) if you would like to join us this school year.
We will begin the program mid September.
The mission of the Growing in Grace Program is to
provide an after-school program to low-income chil-
dren living in at-risk neighborhoods to enhance their
educational success, encourage spiritual growth and
help them develop good behavior and work habits.
Growing in Grace began on September 19, 2016 with
eight children who attended Brinson Elementary
School in 3rd through 5th grades. This year we will
have 10 children.
Christ Church houses Growing in Grace in the Youth
Room of the Church. It provides simple snacks and
necessary school supplies. Transportation is possible by
utilizing the Christ Church van. Growing in Grace op-
erates Monday through Thursday from mid-September
until mid-May in accordance with the Craven County
school calendar. Growing in Grace begins when the
children arrive from school at 3:15, and they are trans-
ported home at 5:00 PM. The time is divided into three
parts-Snack/Outside play time, Story/Prayer time and
Homework time. Volunteers are assigned to work indi-
vidually with one child. All volunteers receive training,
undergo a background check and complete the Safe-
guarding God’s Children Program.
Mentor Training for all mentors (new and returning)
will be on Thursday, August 29 at 5:30 in the GIG
Room - Music building upstairs.

Hymn Notes for July 21
“Blessed Jesus, at thy word,” H 440, is from the pen
of Tobias Clausnitzer, born in Saxony. He had the hon-
or of preaching the thanksgiving sermon at the end of
the Thirty Years’ War. Based on the words of Cornelius
to Peter in Acts 10: “So now all of us are here in the
presence of God to listen to all that the Lord has com-
manded you to say.” The tune is by church musician
and mayor of Mühlhausen, Johann Ahle, and was writ-
ten for this very text.
“Cuando el pobre nada tiene/When the poor one
who has nothing,” W 802, is based on Matthew 25
and Jesus’ words “…for I was hungry, and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a
stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you
clothed me, I was in prison and you visited me…” Au-
thors Olivar and Manzano write about “those who give
what they do not have: those who have nothing, share;
the thirsty, give water; the infirm, give strength." This is
the way, they say, that "hope rises out of hopelessness;
it is then… that we know God still walks with us.” We
will sing in English, but those who feel comfortable
singing in Spanish are welcome to do so.
Dear Christ Church,
Summer is a time when we experience a lot of new peo-
ple in worship. Sometimes they are vacationers briefly in
the area and just curious about how that old downtown
church worships. Sometimes they are new transplants to
the area, who are eager to find a community to connect
with. Sometimes they are locals who have lived here
many years and sense a call to show up here for their
spiritual nourishment. Some of them are life-long Epis-
copalians, and some of them don’t even know how to
pronounce ‘Episcopalian.’ Some of them are eager to
make new friends and new social connections, and some
of them value the space and quiet to process how God
might be working in their lives.
But what they all have in common is that they all de-
serve our attention, hospitality and grace. In a certain
way, every parishioner here is on the newcomer com-
mittee. Even if we don’t collect contact information or
attend meetings, we all contribute to a newcomer’s re-
ception. A newcomer can come into our doors and in-
teract with 10 people. Nine of those people can be kind
and welcoming but if one person is snarky, assuming or
cold, that one person will probably be what sticks most
in their memory of Christ Church. Bottom line: You
make a difference!
One of my favorite Bible verses is Hebrews 13:2. It says
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by
doing that some have entertained angels without know-
ing it.” I believe that every time we are open to the new
among us, we are opening a door that lets God work
through us.
We are an amazing, beautiful, humorous and thoughtful
group of people. I would love for the entire New Bern
metropolitan area to know this, but they won’t know it
if they don’t experience it. So please always be mindful
that your approach and comments to everyone who
walks through our doors reflects the loving, liberating,
life-giving God we worship here.
Sincerely,
Cortney
