The Highlands is a caring community. Sixty days of hospitalization have convinced me. The outpouring of prayers, cards, well-wishes, visits and food gifts has been most impressive. To my family, friends, acquaintances, and neighbors, I extend my heartfelt thanks.

The Show Palace Dinner Theater

Saturday, July 10, 2010 For the past few years Matthew McGee and Candler Budd have broken box office records throughout the Bay Area in Greater Tuna and A Tuna Christmas. The Show Palace is delighted to premiere the third installment in this classic comedy series. Red, White and Tuna brings along all of the favorite denizens of Tuna along with some brand new characters as they burst into the 4th of July Tuna High School reunion. This sets the stage for a show full of fireworks and fun from the land where the lions are too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies.

Contact Pat Carey for trip details.

By Francine Larson

Have you ever had someone smile at you at a time when everything seems hopeless? Maybe it is the darkest of dark days and yet that smile gives you a tiny bit of hope. Sometimes, when you smile, a person will smile back at you. Another time, you may get the cold shoulder. Then again, I live in a small town where not only smiling but also interaction with others is common.

I remember the day I couldn't find where I had parked my car when I went into a department store. I had bought a few things and the minute I walked out, I knew I was going to have a hard time finding my car. I tried to play it cool - like I really knew where I was going, although my packages were getting heavy and the Florida sun was getting hot.

Suddenly, a smiley, middle-aged woman appeared. She drove her car slowly beside me and called out, " Did you lose your car? "

”Yes, but I ‘m sure it is probably in the next aisle. "

I wanted her to go away because I was embarrassed. No matter how long it took me on my own, I just didn't want anyone to know I couldn't find my car. I kept walking and much to my relief, I didn't see the smiley woman.

Just about the time I had turned into the next aisle, she appeared again.

“Still can't find it, honey? I've done the same thing myself. What kind of car is it? "

I told her the make and model of my car while thinking, I wish she would leave me alone. This is so embarrassing.

Well, the nice smiley woman would not leave me alone. She crept away in her car, and then appeared again in a couple of minutes.

“I found it, honey. It’s two aisles down. Want me to take you there?” Still feeling embarrassed, but relieved, I thanked her more than once and gave her a big smile. She wasn't about to give up until she had found my car!

For sure, this smiley woman made my day. I won't ever forget her persistence in finding my car.

I wonder if smiles could be like The Butterfly Effect? " The flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil can set off a storm in Texas. Isn't that an amazing statement? Physicists call this theory " The Butterfly Effect " to explain how the breeze produced by a butterfly’s wings could set off a series of reverberations that over time have a tremendous affect on weather patterns thousands of miles away. Now imagine the impact of millions of butterflies... " (From Care2.com)

If we changed the wording some, it would read: The Smile Effect: A smile could set off a series of reverberations that over time have a tremendous affect on peoples lives thousands of miles away. Now imagine the impact of millions of smiles.

It doesn't have to be a human being smiling at you. It could be something in your house or outside is smiling at you. If you are wondering what I am talking about, check out this web site: http://www.spontaneoussmiley.com/

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day. ~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

By the time you read this article, many of you will have eaten at, or at least heard about, Mallie Kyla's Cafe', in Dade City. This cafe' is the second restaurant owned and run by Larie Hensley. The first, opened in 1996, is in Brooksville, and has a far-reaching reputation for great food.

Mallie Kyla's is open for lunch only, and does not have a large dining room. It is important that you plan your arrival time, if possible, before or after, the local business customers file in. Specials for the day are written on a blackboard near the door. Great salads and sandwiches are menu staples, but the daily soup offerings and mouth-watering desserts are paramount in making this restaurant stand out. Two different home made soups are featured daily, and customers are invited to go on line to check what soups will be served that day in case you're looking for your favorite (web site listed below). Desserts are a little pricey ($3.95), but are large enough to share. Prices are in line with what we've come to expect from better lunch menus. $6.95 or $7.95 seems to be the going rate for a generous size salad, or sandwich or combination. After lunch you can browse for antiques without leaving the premise. Mallie Kyla's is located in the American Eagle Antique Mall.

My review may be on the shorter side this month, and Mallie Kyla's menu may not be very big, but don't let either one of these factors be a deterrent. This is a "great place" to go for lunch. You'll be glad you tried it!

Meet Your Highlands Family — PAT and BRUCE CAREY

Pat and Bruce moved into the Highlands on June 29, 2008. They live at 38327 Callaway Boulevard. Bruce is from Medford, New Jersey and Pat is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They lived most of their lives in New Jersey.

Both Pat and Bruce worked for the state of New Jersey. Bruce was a probation officer for the administrative office of the courts from which he retired after 25 years of service. Pat worked for the Department of Health as supervisor of aides under the caring treatment unit. She retired after 29 years of service.

Pat has three boys. Two of them live in New Mexico and one is in Arkansas. They have eight grandchildren.

Pat and Bruce share their home with two cats. Tiger is nineteen years old and Paisley is five years old.

Pat and Bruce dated for twenty years before they got married. Pat said that Bruce wouldn’t propose to her. They got married at a historic landmark in New Jersey. The minister that married them had spiked hair. They have been married for twelve years.

Bruce told Pat to write down 5 places she would like to visit after they were married and he would do the same. They both wrote down the same places. So far they have visited four of those places. They have traveled to thirteen foreign countries and have traveled across Canada. They are going to Alaska in July and after the first of the year they are going o Egypt. They still want to travel to Australia. They have visited two thirds of the United States.

Pat and Bruce have some beautiful paintings hanging on their walls, most of them painted by Bruce's mother. Bruce's interests are metal detecting (he belongs to a club in Ocala), computers, card games, biking, and kayaking. Pat's interests are many. She enjoys exercising, cards, line dancing, art classes, knitting, bridge, mah jongg, kayaking, biking, quilting, and she belongs to three book clubs. Pat is a member of the Highlands Social Committee. She also plays the Native American flute, psaltery, and hammered dulcimer. Bruce states that Pat is so busy that he has to keep up the house, inside and out, but enjoys doing both.

Summertime at The Highlands is a lazy time of year with many of our residents traveling here and there. Most all of the activities continue, however, so please stop by the main Clubhouse and check out the bulletin board to sign up for upcoming events.

Thank you for helping with the Tools for School event that closed on June 26. Thirty-six children’s back-packs were donated by you. I, with the help of a few friends brought the number up to fifty. On Monday, June 28 volunteers gathered to fill the bags with school supplies donated by the other Hometown America, Providence communities in Florida. I want to thank everyone who helped with this project. Your generosity will bring smiles to fifty underprivileged children.

Larry and I will be on vacation beginning the 6th day of July. PLEASE REMEMBER, Your lease payment is due on the 1st day of each month. Please, don’t be late. I will need to post each resident account with the July payment before leaving on holiday. ALL HOMETOWN OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED ON JULY 5th TO OBSERVE THE INDEPENDENCE DAY HOLIDAY. You will find in our absence a flyer posted on our office doors with the contact person’s name and phone number in the event of a community emergency.

HAPPY HOLIDAY Judy
