Pope Francis’ reflection on the Gospel of Mercy

Vatican City, 6 April 2016

Following the recent cycle of catechesis of the Wednesday general audience, focusing on God's

mercy in the Old Testament, this morning the Holy Father began a reflection on how Jesus brought

this to completion. "Jesus makes visible a love that is open to all, without limits. A pure, gratuitous

and absolute love. A love that culminates in the Sacrifice of the Cross. The Gospel is truly the

'Gospel of Mercy', because Jesus is mercy".

The four Gospels confirm that Jesus, before commencing His ministry, wished to receive baptism

from St. John the Baptist, an event that conveys the orientation of all of Christ's mission. Indeed, He

is not presented to the world in the splendor of the temple, although He could have done so, and

He is not announced by the sound of trumpets and neither does He come in the guise of a judge.

Instead, after thirty years of life hidden away in Nazareth, Jesus went to the river Jordan, along

with many of His people, and He lined up with the sinners to be baptized. Therefore, from the

beginning of His ministry, He presented Himself as the Messiah who takes upon Himself the

human condition, moved by solidarity and compassion".

In the synagogue of Nazareth Jesus reaffirms that everything He achieved after baptism was the

fulfilment of the initial plan: "to bring to all the love of God Who saves", explained the Pope. The

importance of Jesus' gesture is not immediately understood by those who were present on the

banks of the River Jordan, but only by the Father, Who declares "'You are my beloved Son; with

you I am well pleased'. "In this way, the Father confirms the path that the Son has undertaken as

the Messiah, while the Holy Spirit descends upon Him in the form of a dove. Thus, one might say,

Jesus' heart beats in unison with the heart of the Father and of the Spirit, showing all humanity

that salvation is the fruit of God's mercy".

On the Cross we may contemplate even more clearly the great mystery of this love. As He is about

to die, innocent, for us sinners, He implores the Father, "Forgive them, for they know not what they

do". "On the Cross, Jesus presents to God's mercy the sin of the word, and with this all our sins.

Nothing and no-one is excluding from this sacrificial prayer of Jesus. This means that we must not

fear being recognized as and confessing ourselves as sinners, as every sin was brought to the Cross

by the Son. And when we confess and repent, entrusting ourselves to Him, we are sure of being

forgiven. The sacrament of Reconciliation restores to everyone the strength of the forgiveness that

springs from the Cross and renews in our life the grace of mercy that Jesus obtained for us. We

must not fear our miseries: the power of the love of the Crucified is boundless and endless. And

this mercy cancels out our miseries".

In this Jubilee Year, concluded Francis,

"Let us ask of God the grace to experience the power of the Gospel: the Gospel of mercy that

transforms that makes us enter into God's heart that makes us capable of forgiving and

looking to the future, with greater goodness. If we welcome the Gospel of Christ, crucified

and resurrected, all our life will be shaped by the strength of His love that renews".

Living Our Mission Bulletin Announcement

Please post in your bulletin this coming weekend

Let me begin by expressing my deepest gratitude to all of you who have already made a pledge to the

Living Our Mission campaign. In addition to supporting the larger needs of our Church, your generosity

will support the key needs here at our parish.

We need a sacrificial gift from every family in our parish to reach our goal, and there is no gift or pledge

too small to make an impact. Each person in our parish is faced with a different financial situation, and it

is with that in mind that I ask everyone to begin prayerfully considering what their best sacrifice is,

knowing that pledge amounts will vary.

As you heard members of our community share their perspectives on the campaign and ask all families to

consider their commitment, I would like all families in our parish to consider a pledge of $25/month or

higher over the five-year period for a total of $1,500 or higher. Just $25/month over five years adds up

and when we think of a gift this way, it makes it seem possible!

What can a monthly pledge add up to?

The Living Our Mission campaign is a historic, unprecedented effort to position parishes and the Church

throughout the Diocese of Richmond for a strong and vibrant future. It invites the faithful to prayerfully

consider what their best sacrifice is. A decision of faith made in prayer and guided by gratitude, joy, and

love will not only help one’s parish and the larger Church; it will also be a great blessing to the donor.

“For God loves a cheerful giver” (Cor. 9:7).

Monthly Pledge My Sacrifice Equals Total 5-Year

Pledge

$167 $5.56 per day

take out lunch $10,000

$83 $2.78 per day

premium coffee $5,000

$50 $1.67 per day

large soda $3,000

$25 83¢ per day

lottery ticket=$1 $1,500

What is a pledge?

A pledge is a good-faith promise that offers you a way to be generous over a period of time. Pledges are

not legally binding in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

When will I receive reminders to make payments on my pledge?

Unless you indicate that you would like a later start date on your pledge card, you will begin receiving

reminders a few weeks after you make your pledge. You can choose whether to receive those reminders

on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis.

Is it possible to set up automatic payments for my pledge?

Yes, some donors set up automatic bank draft or credit card payments. Some also send checks or

transfer stock.

To whom should checks be made?

Checks should be made out to “Living Our Mission.”

Do you enjoy refreshments after Mass? Well, they

certainly don’t come down from Heaven and we are in

serious need of volunteers. We need at least one

additional volunteer for the 2nd. Sunday of each month,

and one for the 4th. Sunday of each month. If you can’t

put yourself up for a 12 months commitments, what

about every other month? We would certainly be

sharing the joy of sharing amongst many more

parishioners.

What will you be expected to do:

• Bring mainly pastries

• Help set the table up (and warm food/pastries

as needed)

• Make sure that all goodies are served on the

table, and replenish as needed

• Clean up the tables at the end of the gathering

• Wash dishes and clean the kitchen afterwards

It certainly looks like a lot, but you would not be alone

doing all of the above!!!

Remember,

THE MORE THE MARRIER!

If you are moved to participate,

please contact Pat Morse after mass.
