EasterSpring Sermon Series: “Crazy Talk: Stories Jesus Told (About Himself)” Karl Barth, whom many scholars identify as the greatest theologian of the 20th century, argued that Jesus himself is the subject of the cryptic and caustic stories that we call parables—which explains why we kill Christ in large part because of the stories he tells. Jesus, for example, is the Father’s son who goes into the far country. Robert Capon, author and interpreter of the parables, argued that the parables are primarily ways Jesus

spoke of his death. Thus, Jesus is the fatted calf whose whole life and purpose is his death which makes possible a feast of reconciliation.

Often Jesus’ parables are interpreted in a way that makes his death seem a tragic misunderstanding. By contrast, the parables do not reveal eternal truths or universal principles about God that are intelligible to anyone. The parables are stories told to Jesus’ disciples even if others are near to hear. They reveal not timeless truths but the scandal of the Gospel and what it means to be a student of that good news and a community whose life would not be possible without it.

Your hidden glory in creation now revealed in You our Christ

What a beautiful Name it is, what a beautiful Name it is: the Name of Jesus Christ my KingWhat a beautiful Name it is - nothing compares to this -what a beautiful Name it is: The Name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us, so Jesus You brought heaven downMy sin was great Your love was greater - what could separate us now

What a wonderful Name it is: the Name of Jesus

Death could not hold You; the veil tore before You; You silence the boast of sin and graveThe heavens are roaring the praise of Your glory, for You are raised to life again

You have no rival, You have no equal; Now and forever God You reignYours is the kingdom, Yours is the glory, Yours is the Name above all names

What a powerful Name it is, what a powerful Name it is: the Name of Jesus Christ my KingWhat a powerful Name it is - nothing can stand against -what a powerful Name it is: the Name of Jesus

Opening PrayerSong of Praise: “Living Hope”

How great the chasm that lay between us - how high the mountain I could not climbIn desperation I turned to heaven and spoke Your name into the night

Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness tore through the shadows of my soulThe work is finished the end is written: Jesus Christ my living hope

Who could imagine so great a mercy; what heart could fathom such boundless graceThe God of ages stepped down from glory to wear my sin and bear my shame

The cross has spoken I am forgiven; the King of kings calls me His ownBeautiful Savior I’m Yours forever. Jesus Christ my living hope

Chorus: Hallelujah praise the One who set me free! Hallelujah death has lost its grip on meYou have broken every chain; there’s salvation in Your name, Jesus Christ my living hope

(Repeat)

Then came the morning that sealed the promise: Your buried body began to breatheOut of the silence the Roaring Lion declared the grave has no claim on me

(Repeat)Jesus Yours is the victory whoa

(Chorus)

Jesus Christ my living hope. Oh God You are my living hope

We pray the spirit of the risen Christ will touch you this day, and we invite you to come back and worship with us again soon. Join us in Wright Hall immediately after worship for coffee, refreshments and fellowship. Next Sunday, April 28, Rev. Lenten Mission Projects at Annandale ChurchDonate by writing checks to Annandale United Methodist Church with “Lenten Mission Projects” in the

memo line, or online at www.annandale-umc.org

100,000 HOMES is a national movement to find permanent homes for chronically homeless people. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to support FACETS’ Rapid Re-Housing Program, which seeks to place area homeless families and individuals in permanent housing as quickly as possible.

ACCA, the Annandale Christian Community for Action, is a coalition of 26 churches serving the Annandale area. ACCA programs include: furniture, transportation, family emergency, Meals on Wheels, shelter assistance, housing repair and child development. This year’s goal is $10,000.

CAMP HIGHROAD is a Christian adventure camp located near Middleburg with swimming, boating, archery, horseback riding, a challenge course and climbing wall, and several lodges. Supplies purchased with a $7,500 Lenten Mission donation will support cleanup and repair work at the camp.

Our HYPOTHERMIA PREVENTION PROGRAM partners with FACETS to prevent injury or death to local people who are homeless during cold weather. The $3,500 raised will help us assist our neighbors in need. To volunteer, contact Teresa Beyer at [email protected] or 301-221-8321.

The KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY team shares the transforming love of Christ with the men incarcerated at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, VA, through visits including “Prayer and Share” gatherings. The $4,000 raised will help pay for some of the expenses of the ministry.

FOOD MINISTRIES AND PROGRAMS at our Mission Center include food distribution to an estimated 290 family members, backpack meals for low-income students and lunches for the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter. Our funding goal this year is $10,000. To volunteer, contact Betsy Clevenger, [email protected] or 240-682-2067.

The POE MIDDLE SCHOOL weekly meals ministry serves over 300 students each week during the school year. The $10,000 raised will help our teams prepare and serve a hot meal on Tuesdays after school. To volunteer, contact Sheila Kyer at [email protected] or 703-981-6080.

RISING HOPE United Methodist Mission Church serves those living in poverty along the Route 1 Corridor. Our goal is to make a $5,000 contribution to Rising Hope’s campaign to replace kitchen equipment, the HVAC system, and to pay down the mortgage and purchase a new church van.

RISE AGAINST HUNGER aims to end hunger by packaging and distributing meals worldwide. The organization’s low cost, highly nutritious meals can be easily shipped and stored. Our Lenten Mission goal is to raise $7,500 for this project.

The HAITI Lenten Mission Project will continue our long-standing efforts to help the people of Haiti rebuild from earthquakes and hurricanes. Our goal of $7,500 will purchase supplies to help a mission team rebuild churches, schools, clinics and orphanages.

Live Easter animals today! Be sure to check out the live animals on our grounds near the Columbia Pike side of the church. We’ll have lambs, goats, bunnies and a donkey from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by and snap a photo!

Children’s Easter service outside, followed by an Easter egg hunt: Weather permitting, we’ll have a special service for the children at 9:45 a.m. in the lower courtyard. Our traditional Easter egg hunt will follow, which will be behind the church in the playground area and cemetery.

Spread some Easter joy to our homebound members: If you would like to deliver some of our beautiful Easter flowers to a homebound member, sign up at the table in the atrium. You may take flowers from the altar after the 11 a.m. service.

Needed: Kairos cookies and prayers. The Kairos Prison Ministry Team is preparing to share God’s love with the men at Greensville Correctional Center, May 2–5. A cookie sign-up sheet, prison-approved cookie recipes and instructions are on the table in the atrium. Sugar-free and gluten-free cookies

are especially needed. If you cannot bake cookies but want to make a donation for baking supplies, make a check payable to AUMC (with Kairos Cookies in the note line). Donations are due today. Cookies must be baked by next Sunday, April 28. If you are willing to pray for the team and weekend participants, please add your name to the sign-up sheet in the atrium. Contact Bill Iwig at 301-365-7532 for more information.

Ministry outreach opportunities at Golden LivingCenter: Join us on the first Sunday of the month as we minister to the residents of Golden LivingCenter – Sleepy Hollow (6700 Columbia Pike). We meet at 2:30 p.m. to sing hymns and reflect on the scripture. This is a ministry of presence, so simply “being there” is appreciated by the residents. If you play an instrument or would be willing to prepare a brief scripture lesson, that would be helpful, too. To get involved, contact Karen Stewart at 703-304-0809 or [email protected].

Volunteers needed to make home visits: About 30 members of Annandale UMC are homebound and enjoy brief visits from church members. A small number of Caring Ministry team members make the monthly visits, but more volunteers are needed! If you are available to make 2-3 homebound visits about once a month, please contact Barbara Gordon at [email protected] or 703-300-5184. Or contact Dottie Rogerson in

the church office at [email protected] or 703-256-8330, ext. 112. The Caring Ministries team does not replace visits by AUMC’s three pastors; it supplements their efforts.

Names on our prayer list: Contact Dottie Rogerson in the office at [email protected] to add someone to our prayer list. If a name has been on the prayer list for awhile, please let us know if you would like to have it removed.

Interested in anything you see? Come on over! Visitors and newcomers are always welcome.

The church office will be closed Monday, April 22, in celebration of Easter.

United Methodist Men’s dinner, April 25: Men, young and old, are invited to a dinner of New York strip steak and lobster tail on Thursday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. in Wright Hall. Invite your son, a neighbor or a friend for fellowship and some delicious food. Afterwards, we’ll have a choir rehearsal with Pat Vaughn for the 11 a.m. service on May 12 (Mother’s Day). Due to the special meal we have planned, we MUST

have your confirmed reservation for dinner. RSVP to Gary FitzGibbon at [email protected] or 703-963-8707.

Rebuilding Together, Saturday, April 27: Help ACCA renovate the home of a deserving family in our area! Youth (age 14 and over) and adults are encouraged to participate for the whole day or part of the day. It’s a great opportunity for students who need service hours. If you are interested in helping or fixing snacks for the workers, contact John Clarke at [email protected] or 703-642-3836.

Calling all graduates! The May issue of the Witness newsletter will highlight our 2019 high school and college graduates. If you’d like to be included, please send us a photo and the following information: name of student, degree, name of high school or college, and any other information you would like to share such as

future plans (college, graduate school, new job, etc.). Email your info to [email protected] by May 3. For an example, see the May 2018 Witness on the AUMC website at http://annandalechurch.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/May-15.pdf.

FaithJustice immigration forum: “Hospitality, Sanctuary, Advocacy,” May 5: Join us for the next FaithJustice Forum on Sunday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. in Wright Hall.
