“COME BACK TO THE LORD!”
Ken gave us a wonderful introduction to the Minor Prophets
Wednesday evening. If you missed it, here are the verses he chose
from each of them to suggest something of their times and messages.
A. Hosea—Northern Kingdom, Eight Century B.C., Pre-exilic
prophet, contemporary with Isaiah, Micah, and Amos. Hosea
6:6; cf. Matthew 9:13; 12:7.
B. Joel—Southern Kingdom, Eighth Century B.C., Pre-exilic
prophet. Joel 2:12–14.
C. Amos—from the Southern Kingdom but prophesied to the
Northern Kingdom, Eighth Century B.C. Pre-exilic prophet,
contemporary with Hosea and possibly with Isaiah and Micah.
Amos 3:7–8.
D. Obadiah—Southern Kingdom, Seventh Century B.C. (?), Pre-
exilic prophet. His message was directed against Edom.
Obadiah 21.
E. Jonah—Northern Kingdom, Eighth Century B.C., Pre-exilic
prophet. Prophesied to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian
Empire. Jonah 4:10–11.
F. Micah—Southern Kingdom, Eighth Century B.C., Pre-exilic
prophet. Micah 4:1–3; cf. Isaiah 2:2–4.
G. Nahum—Southern Kingdom, Seventh Century B.C., Pre-exilic
prophet. His message concerned the fall of Nineveh. Nahum
1:15.
H. Habakkuk—Southern Kingdom, Seventh Century B.C., Pre-
exilic prophet. Habakkuk 2:20.
I. Zephaniah—Southern Kingdom, Seventh Century B.C., Pre-
exilic prophet. Zephaniah 1:1.
J. Haggai—Post-exilic, Sixth Century B.C. prophet. Compare
Ezra 5:1 with Haggai 1:1, 2:1, 10, 20.
K. Zechariah—Post-exilic, Sixth and Fifth Century B.C. prophet.
Compare Ezra 5:1 with Zechariah 1:1, 7; 7:1. Zechariah 9–14
may date from the time of Esther (cf. Esther 1:1–3).
L. Malachi—Post-exilic, Fifth Century B.C. prophet, Jerusalem.
Malachi 3:16–18.
