A special invitation for the clergy Dear Colleagues in Ministry, The Holy Land holds a unique place in the hearts and minds of all who follow Christ, and a visit to the region offers a very particular opportunity to engage with our sacred Scriptures and to learn more of the foundational stories of our faith. Alongside the chance to visit the sites and shrines associated with the life of Jesus, a pilgrimage brings the chance both to engage with the Christians of today’s Holy Land, as well as discovering at first hand something of the reality of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. It is a privilege and pleasure to have been asked to lead this generously subsidized pilgrimage, and we hope you will be able to join us on our journey. As we travel, we will visit many of the places from the Gospel stories, and also be blessed by some substantial encounters with the Christians of the Holy Land today, including the chance to experience a good number of Episcopal parishes and institutions and learn something of their remarkable work. While in Jerusalem it will be a particular pleasure to meet with Archbishop Suheil, and learn more of the ministries for which he is responsible. A pilgrimage of this kind offers real opportunity for enrichment, education, fellowship and refreshment. We will be supported as we travel by a Christian tour company that is the ‘preferred partner’ of the Diocese of Jerusalem, and we will be staying entirely in Christian-run pilgrim houses and hotels, and being looked after by Christian guides and bus drivers. As the opening chapter of St John’s Gospel shows us Jesus inviting his disciples to come and see for themselves where he was staying, so now we hope you will be able to come and see the places and peoples of his land today in the company of colleagues.

Grace and peace,

“The Holy Land is a place of welcome to Christians from around the entire world, and the Episcopal diocese always delights to welcome Episcopal clergy from all provinces to meet us when they come to this region. For any pilgrimage to be complete, it is very important that pilgrims from the west have the chance to meet and to pray with their sister and brother Christians in the Holy Land, to hear their stories, and to see something of the reality of life in Palestine and Israel for these people. I commend this familiarisation pilgrimage and the work of Lightline for the opportunities it offers in making such contacts, and in the name of the Diocese of Jerusalem, hope to welcome you personally to the Holy Land in the coming months.”

+Suheil Dawani, Episcopal Archbishop of Jerusalem

Day 1, Tuesday 10th January We gather at Newark Airport for our afternoon United overnight flight to Tel Aviv.

Day 2, Wednesday 11th January On arrival in the morning we will be met by our guide and driven north towards Galilee breaking for lunch enroute. In the afternoon we begin our pilgrimage with a drive across the Jezreel Valley (the biblical scene of Armageddon) to Mount Tabor and ascend to the summit to visit the Church of the Transfiguration. On descending Mount Tabor we drive to our Pilgrim Guest House on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, arriving in time to unpack and rest and freshen up before our evening meal. Overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee.

Day 3, Thursday 12th January After an early breakfast we drive up to Nazareth, the town associated with the beginning of the gospel message, to see how the Good News is both remembered and lived out today. We will visit the site of the only spring in town, where Jesus’ mother will have drawn water, the Basilica of the Annunciation and the Synagogue

Church. We then proceed to the nearby site of Sepphoris, an ancient biblical town which is still being excavated and possibly the site where Joseph worked as a carpenter. After a break for lunch we drive return to the Jezreel Valley to visit Solomon’s chariot city of Megiddo. Strategically placed it overlooks the plains of Armageddon. We finally return to our guest house. Dinner and overnight by the Sea of Galilee.

Day 4, Friday 13th January Today will be devoted to a leisurely exploration of the area that was the base for Jesus’ ministry by the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. We will visit sites associated with the call of the first disciples, the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, the teaching of the Sermon

Page 4: “Come and See”files.ctctcdn.com/be5a1aca201/adf3f117-67ec-40fc-a... · As the opening chapter of St John’s Gospel shows us Jesus inving his disciples to come and see for themselves

Day 4 continued the Mount, and the village of Capernaum. We will also sail on a modern-day version of the kind of boat used for fishing at the time of Jesus and also see the remains of a similar boat which dates back to the early First Century. Return to our hotel. Dinner and overnight stay by the Sea of Galilee.

Day 5, Saturday 14th January Leaving the Galilee, we will head south through the heart of the West Bank, noting as we drive some of the ‘facts on the ground’ about the Occupation, as we come to the city of Nablus. Here we will visit Jacob’s Well, where the Fourth Gospel tells us of Jesus’ encounter with the woman drawing water. We also hope to visit the Anglican parish church of St Phillip in the city and St Luke’s Anglican Hospital After a break for lunch we drive on to Bethany the home of Jesus’ friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus, before finally driving on to Bethlehem for the first of two nights stay in the city in which Christ was born. Dinner and overnight stay by Manger Square in Bethlehem.

Day 6, Sunday 15th January This morning we attend the Eucharist at the mother church of Anglicanism in the Holy Land, St George’s Cathedral in East Jerusalem. We then return to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity, the

oldest church in Christendom. After a break for lunch we visit the Shepherds fields in nearby Beth Sahour. Return to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay by Manger Square in Bethlehem.

Day 7, Monday 16th January The morning will be devoted to Christian institutions endeavouring to bring something of the abundant life promised in the gospel to those living under the restrictions of the Occupation. We hope to visit the St Vincent Creche/Orphanage - the only facility of its kind in the West Bank, offering Christian love and compassion to over forty abandoned babies and small children. We then visit Bethlehem University which is partially funded by the Vatican and other donations. After lunch we proceed to the Jordan River and the site of Qasr al Yehud where we will have an opportunity to renew our baptismal vows.

Day 7 continued We then drive south towards the Dead Sea to visit Qumran to learn about the discover of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the life of the ascetic Essene community that dwelled there. Finally, we have the chance to experience the unique waters of the Dead Sea, before returning to Betlehem. Dinner and overnight stay by Manger Square in Bethlehem.

Day 8, Tuesday 17th January After breakfast we leave Bethlehem and drive to the summit of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem for a breathtaking view of the Old city and its surrounding medieval walls. We then begin to trace Jesus’ Palm Sunday journey from Bethphage, down the mountain, stopping at two churches on the way, before reaching the Garden of Gethsemane, and the profoundly moving

Church of the Agony. Late morning we journey south from Jerusalem to the ancient city of Hebron, the burial place of Abraham and the patriarchs, where we will also see the hideous complexity of occupation and division in clear focus in the centre of the city. After a break for lunch we drive to the Israel Museum in West Jerusalem to visit the shrine of the book that houses the Dead Sea scrolls and the wonderful 1:50 scaled model of Jerusalem based around the time of Jesus. We then proceed to check-in to our hotel situated within the Old walled city. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 9, Wednesday 18th January This morning we will meet members of Settler communities living in the main settlement blocks south of Jerusalem, to see the environment in which they live, and learn something about their outlook and understanding of the politics and sovereignty of the lands of this region.

After lunch we return to Jerusalem and ascend Mount Zion to visit sites associated with the Last Supper, the Day of Pentecost and the falling asleep of Mary, before finishing our day at the church of St Peter in Gallicantu and recalling Peter’s betrayal of Jesus. Return to our hotel. Dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem.

Day 10, Thursday 19th January We will make an early start to visit the Western Wall and Temple Mount before coming to the start of the Via Dolorosa and

walking the Way of the Cross through the crowded streets of the Old City towards the Church of the Holy Sepulchure. After a break for lunch we will have the choice a of a free afternoon to explore the Old City or the opportunity of visiting the Yad vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum and Park. Return to our hotel in good time to freshen up before dinner. Overnight stay in Jerusalem.

Day 11, Friday 20th January After packing our bags we will head west towards the Mediterranean and the airport, stopping at the town of Abu Ghosh, one of the possible sites of Emmaus, to celebrate a final Eucharist together before heading down to the Mediterranean city port of Jaffa, Biblical Joppa where we ill have time to explore this town before dinner. After dinner we drive on to Tel Aviv for our journey home

Day 12, Saturday 21st January Our plane lands back in Newark in the early morning and we go our separate ways, ready to speak of all that we have seen and discovered in the Land of the Holy One and to tell all those whom we meet about what has happened to us on the road…
