Liturgy of the Word

The Epistle Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1-9 Lisa Toner, Reader For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. Reader: The Word of the Lord ALL: Thanks be to God.

Anthem: Festival Sanctus, by John Leavitt Concordia Chamber Singers

*Gospel Reading: Luke 14:1-12 Evelyn Chaveriat, Reader One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[a] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” And they had nothing to say. When

he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invit-ed. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt them-selves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Reader: The Gospel of the Lord ALL: Praise to You Lord Christ.

Sermon: This Is Only Temporary The Rev. Dr. Christopher Mizel *Hymn of Response: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” No. 110 Prayers of the People The Lord’s Prayer (to be sung, see back panel) TIME WITH THE CHILDREN . Confession before Communion

Call to confession It is written of old: “Help us, O God of our salvation for the glory of your name. Deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake.” Let us admit to each other and to God, that we are in need of mercy and renewal.

Prayer of Confession Let us pray: Wash away all my iniquity /and cleanse me from my sin. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Cast me from your presence / take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Wash away all my iniquity / and cleanse me from my sin.

Assurance of Pardon Anyone who sins has an advocate with God: Jesus Christ, the righteous one. By his life, death, and resurrection, he has found the lost sheep and brings it back, rejoicing over one sinner that repents. In Jesus, we are never beyond the reach of God’s love. And so today, in the name of Jesus, I proclaim to all of you who believe the Gospel: In Jesus your sins are forgiven! Receive the Good News!

Holy Communion [Sursum Corda]

The Lord be with you; And also with you. Lift up your hearts; We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God; It is right to give our thanks and praise! Celebrant: All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places our true and loving God, through Jesus Christ your Eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. … [Celebrant continues] … And so, as the morning stars sing your praises, we join those heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy:

*People (singing): “Sanctus” (words and music p. 19)

Holy, holy, holy Lord, Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna! Hosanna! In the highest! In the highest!

Celebrant: Glory, honor and praise are yours, Creator of all. Your Word has never been silent. You called your people to yourself that they might be a light to the nations; you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. … [Celebrant continues] … return in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ.

*People (singing): “Angus Dei” (words and music on p. 30-31)

O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the word, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the word, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the word, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the word, have mercy upon us.

O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the word, GRANT US THY PEACE.

O Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the word, GRANT US THY PEACE.
