CELEBRATION OF HICAST DAY
16th
HICAST day was celebrated on 12th
Jestha 2073 at National Academy Hall, Kamaladi,
Kathmandu. In that occasion honorable minister of Agriculture Mr. Haribol Gajurel was as a
chief guest, The Dean of faculty of Science and Technology Mr. Subha Narayan Pathak,
Chairperson of Avenues TV Mr. Bhaskar Raj Rajkarnikar as guest and Chairperson of HICAST
Dr. Binayak P. Rajbhandari chaired the inaugural session.
Dr. Heramba Bdr. Rajbhandari, former secretary of ministry of Agriculture and pioneer of
private dairy enterprises was honoured with lifetime achievement awards for his enormous
contribution in private and public dairy industries, Dr. Mukti N. Shrestha, former secretary of
ministry of Agriculture for his contribution in continous education in Veterinary medicine at
HICAST since its establishment and Dr. Keshari Laxmi Manandhar, former principal scientist of
NARC were honoured for her contribution in growth of commercial mushroom farming in
Nepal.
Similarly, the following staffs who have contributed 10 years of uninterrupted service at
HICAST were honoured.

NATIONAL RICE DAY 2073
National rice day was celebrated by HICAST on Ashad 15, 2073 (29th
June 2016) by planting
rice seedlings in HICAST Integrated Research Farm located at Bandegaun, Lalitpur. Chairperson
of HICAST Dr. Binayak P. Rajbhandari inaugurated in the presence of all faculty members,
administrative staffs and students. Similarly, journalists from various media were also present in
that occasion.

WORLD VETERINARY DAY 2016
World Veterinary day 2016 had been celebrated based on the theme “Continuing Education with
a One Health Focus” on 30th April 2016.
The programme was organized by

Livestock Services (DLS), Nepal
Agricultural Research Council
(NARC), Himalayan College of
Agricultural Sciences and
Technology (HICAST) and other
related stakeholders. Principal, Dr.
K.B Shrestha, entire faculty members
and students of B.V.Sc & AH
programme actively participated in various activities including awareness rally (Prabhat Pheri)
programme staring from Veterinary complex Tripureshwor.
WORLD RABIES DAY 2016
World Rabies Day 2016 had been celebrated in Kathmandu with various activities covering
public awareness, distributing education materials, free dog vaccination program and related
activities. Veterinary Public Health Office organized a mass rally on September 28 in
coordination with Directorate of Animal Health, Department of Livestock Serves, Ministry of
Livestock Development, Ministry of Health and HICAST. An interaction workshop was
conducted at DLS after the rally. Three papers were also presented on the workshop focusing

scenario of Rabies situation in Nepal, National Rabies Control Strategy and Dog
Population/Mass Dog Vaccination in Kathmandu metropolitan city.

TECHNICL PAPER PRESENTATION AND DISSEMINATION
International Horticulture Conference
Head of Agriculture programme, HICAST Mr. Bishnu P. Bhattarai presented a paper on
“Agriculture Education in Nepal” at First International Horticulture Conference
organized by Horticulture Society Nepal held on 27th

Nov. 2015 at Park
Villege, Kathmandu. The programme was co-sponsored by HICAST.
National conference on Veterinary education
Principal of HICAST Dr. K. B. Shrestha presented a joint theme paper on “Veterinary
Education in Nepal” at 12th
National Conference of Nepal Veterinary Association. The
conference was held on 1st – 3
rd May 2016 at Nepal Academy Hall Kathmandu.
Aloevera Procesing Training
Mr. Bishnu P. Bhattarai, Agriculture Programme Head of HICAST provided three day
training programme on Aloe vera Processing to the farmers from Ramechhap.

Post-Harvest Management Training
The Agriculture programme head of HICAST Mr. Bishnu P. Bhattarai gave two days
training programme to the farmers of Ramechhap on the topic “Post-Harvest
Management.”
MOU BETWEEN HICAST AND iDE
The MoU between HICAST and iDE was signed to establish a formal agreement with the
organization for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for Vegetable and Mango Pests in
Asia project. The purpose of this agreement is to carry out a study on “Pest and disease
surveillance”.
VOLUNTEER EXCHANGE PROGRAMME (SUPPORTED BY CECI)
Katherine Jenkins, Web and Communication Officer from University of Guelph, Ontario,
Canada worked as a Volunteer form 27th
May to 11th
June 2016. During that period she
contributed on improving communication system of HICAST. For that she performed major
activities such as updating website and mobile app, development of brochure, including home
page navigation and academic content of website etc.
Benoit Lesage, Manager, office Automation Technology from transat AT Inc. Montreal, Quebec,
Canada was involved as volunteer (IT Advisor) in HICAST from 13th
to 29th
July 2016. His
major professional contribution were management of e-library, development of student database
system, assist in procuring cloud software like open Drive. He also provided useful tips about the
uses of IT at HICAST.
Mr. Bimal Bhattarai, Communication Officer of HICAST was nominated as counter partner for
both volunteers. He was involved actively in all the activities related to communication and
information technology in HICAST.

A farewell programme was organized separately to above mentioned volunteers at different dates
under chairmanship of Dr. Binayak P. Rajbhandari, Chairperson of HICAST along with
Principal Dr. K.B Shrestha, UNITERA Programme Officer/ CECI Ms. Dibyashwari Khadka,
and HICAST family. Dr. Rajbhandari handed over token of love to each of them and extended
thanks for their invaluable support. Lastly, Dr. Rajbhandari thanked to CECCI Nepal and
UNITERA Programme for their cooperation and said “such type of support is expected from
UNITERA/ CECI in future as well”.
HICAST SPORTS MEET 2016
Sports meet was organized by HICAST from 5th
-10th
September, 2016. The committee was
formed for the successful completion of the event under the chairmanship of Mr. Krishna Prasad
Bhatta and Mr. Bimal Bhattarai as a
Member along with student
representatives viz., Bushwalk Raj
BK, Binod Dahal, Bibek Thapa,
Nirmal Singh Thakuri, Sulav
Baidhya and Nischal Ghimire.
Various games like Football, Basket
ball, Cricket, Badminton, Volley
ball, Chess, Quiz competition, Table
Tennis, Tug of War, Spoon Race,
Mini Marathon and Relay race were
scheduled during the sports meet.
Separate events for boys and girls
were conducted as girls student were very enthusiastic and actively participated in each event.
The prize distribution ceremony was held on 13th
August 2016 under the chairmanship of Dr.
K.B Shrestha, Principal of HICAST. Dr. Shrestha congratulated all the winners during his speech
and handed over the medals and certificates to them.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW PROGRAMMES IN MASTER DEGREE
Another two master degree programme in agriculture; M.Sc. Ag. (Commercial Horticulture) and
M.Sc. Ag. (Sustainable Agricultural & Climate Change) has been approved by academic council
of Purbanchal University. The meeting of PU academic council was held on 5th
August 2016.
HICAST will start these two programmes along with previously started M.Sc. Ag (Agri-business
Mgmt), M.Sc. Dairy Technology and M.Sc. Meat Technology from January 2017.
Similarly, revised course of B.Sc. (Honours) Agriculture and B.V.Sc. & A.H. programmes has
been also approved. This will be effective from coming academic year.

NEW VOLUME OF HICAST JOURNAL
Volume 16 of Nepalese Journal of Agricultural Sciences (NJAS) has been published which
includes technical papers on Agricultural and Veterinary sciences. It is noteworthy that articles
from Bangladesh, India, USA, and People’s Republic of China are also published in the volume
16 of the journal. The soft copy of the journal is available at/ www.hicast.edu.np/.

dissemination program was held on 12th
July 2016 within HICAST premises where active
participants were mainly from DLS, NARC, DLSO, faculty members of HICAST and final year
Veterinary students of HICAST. The above mentioned research was started at March 2015 and
ended on August 2016.
Funded by University Grants Commission (UGC)
A research project by Dr. Bishwas Sharma and Dr. Suraj Thapa from HICAST entitled “Sero-
prevalence of Brucellosis in Goat of Dolakha district” has been approved by UGC, Nepal for
2017.
Collaboration with HEIFER
Research project on study and control of Mastitis collaborated with Heifer International has been
approved under the funding of Florida State University / FEED THE FUTRE innovation lab
programme.
Colorado State University Collaboration
A Research Project on Epidemiology of Animal disease Reporting system involving farmers at
village level from Dhading, Dolkha and Nuwakot.

HICAST announced the admission notice for the new enrollment for B.Sc. (Hons.) Ag. Ag. And

programme has been selected. Because of increasing scope of agricultural education in Nepal
there is growing number of applicants to study higher education in the field of Agriculture and

ANIMAL HEALTH CAMP

animal health camp organized at
Topa village of Rajbiraj District on

coordinated by Dr. Umesh Mandal,
faculty member of HICAST. The
students had exposure in field
regarding different clinical cases of
various species of animal like
parasitic infestation, malnutrition,
maggots infestation in large and small ruminants. “More than 400 farmers were directly
benefited from the programme”; coordinator Dr. Mandal said. HICAST had provided various
medicinal supports to the health camp such as anthelmintics, antibiotics and other supported
drugs.

MEETING WITH PU AUTHORITIES
A meeting was held with Examination Controller of P.U. Mr. Mohan Basnet and Chairperson of
HICAST Dr. Binayak P. Rajbhandari along with Principal Dr. K.B Shrestha and other authorities
on 22nd
October 2016. The meeting streamlined the examination schedule for maintaining proper
academic calendar of B.Sc.(Honours) Ag and BVSC and AH programmes run under Purbanchal
University.
MEETING WITH WINROCK INTERNATIONAL
A Meeting with a team of Winrock International F2F programme was held at HICAST college
to discuss on past collaborative programs. Another meeting was held at central office, Bagdol on
24th
August 2016 to discuss about future collaboration between Winrock International and
HICAST.
TALK PROGRAMME ON WEED MANAGEMENT
A one day seminar on "Importance of integrated weed management in agricultural cropping
systems” was successfully organized at HICAST on 8th
August 2016. Dr. Anil Shrestha,
Professor of Weed Science at State University of California, USA was the speaker in the
seminar. The event was facilitated by F2F programme, Winrock International.
