For this rich inheritance of the Church of Jesus Christ, we give thanks.

Crown our joy in this hour with a fresh awareness of vast company of Christians

who share our celebration and who urge us to yet greater achievements in Christ’s name.

For those who make common cause with us, we give thanks.

May we be worthy of the faith of our ancestors and eager

to win new victories for righteousness’ sake.

For the “invisible institution” of black slaves we give you thanks. For the emergence

of the Black Church, solidified by shared suffering and deliverance, we give thanks.

We remember with gratitude and awe their creative appropriation of the Bible,

and their centuries-long struggle for freedom all alone.

For the Quakers who took a firm stand against slavery in 1688, we give thanks.

Fill us with an ever-increasing knowledge of truth, and with

an ever-growing awareness of need. Give us a more generous spirit.

For the assurance of new opportunities to serve you better, we give thanks.

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

renew our faith and increase our strength.

May we be worthy recipients of past blessings and ready helpers in the tasks that lie ahead.

Come, Lord Jesus, empower and hold our church to your heart.

Unite us in common commitment to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, that the world

may see our dedication to follow your teachings and to fulfill your will for this church.

May your kingdom come and your will be done in splendid, perfect fellowship.

Continue to guide us in the future, as you have in the past.

Dear Christian Friends:

It is with joy and excitement that I write to you, bidding

greetings on the opening pages of our 112th Homecoming

Worship Bulletin. God has blessed us with grace and peace

to once again celebrate as a church family. We decree victo-

ry and favor as we proclaim “112 Years of God’s

Faithfulness.”

Our church motto declares that we are “actively walking and

working in Christ.” Our mission statement identifies our

ministry focus to be “Christ centered.” Yet the revealing description of the C. N.

Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church simply shows a congregation that is

unashamed of its heritage and unapologetic of its commitment to Jesus Christ.

Found within the pages of this worship bulletin are the stories and the history of

faithful women and men who sought to do the will of almighty God for 112 years.

Through prayer, fasting, and sacrifice, the vision of a warm and caring congregation

was projected and the ministry of that vision has now come to reality.

C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church is proud to be a part of so many lives

and it is blessed with people and resources to fulfill its vital ministry. Since last

year’s Homecoming, we have welcomed new members through baptism, profession

of faith and transfer from other congregations. We have also said our good-byes to

members who either moved away or were called home to glory. Yet, through it all,

God has sustained us.

We praise God for the multitude of blessings. The dedication and tireless efforts of

our ancestors now reaps a wonderful harvest. We share in the development of our

young and the caring respect of our elderly. We rejoice in the wholeness of our sin-

gles and support of the union of our couples. We embrace new ideas for our future

and welcome the wisdom of the ages which God has let the light of life shine for

112 years at C. N. Jenkins.

It is my hope that you will receive a blessing from our worship today. My sincere

thanks are extended to the Homecoming Committee and the countless volunteers

who assist on this grand day of worship and celebration.

Sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Cannon, Pastor – Head of Staff

Dear Reverend Cannon, Reverend Marshall & Members of C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church:

As Mayor of Charlotte, I want to send greetings and best wishes as you celebrate the 112th Homecoming

of faithful ministries for C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church. With the longevity of 112 years,

C. N. Jenkins Church has endured and witnessed many changes in our community and with our citizens.

Through the leadership of Pastor Cannon and the dedication of this church family, you have provided

hope and empowerment for many of our most at risk citizens. Your community outreach at the Women's

Shelter and the Men's Shelter provides nourishment for those who know the pain of hunger. Through the

church's partnership with the Charlotte Rescue Mission Rebound Program, young men receive spiritual

guidance and examples of a life without addiction. Your generosity has also touched those in the interna-

tional community's of Haiti and soon in the country of Belize.

Thank you for the many contributions and assistance you provide to the citizens of our City and region.

Best wishes for a joyful celebration and may God continue to bless your future endeavors.

Sincerely,

Anthony R. Foxx

Historical Sketch

The roots of the Charles Newton Jenkins Memorial United Presbyterian Church were planted in 1894as a Sunday School in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Will Jackson on McCall Street.

Mr. S. W. James, a theological student at Biddle University, was the organizer and leader. Theschool, aside from emphasizing Christian training, set up a curriculum of reading and writing.

As the Sunday School enrollment increased, the school moved to the home of Mr. John Rinehart onSnowball Street.

Other students were always on hand to assist Mr. James with the Sunday School and to deliver thesermons. Mr. C. N. Jenkins was one of those students whose interest and dedication led him to join theSunday School and help Mr. James in 1898, to organize the Greenville Mission Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Jenkins entered the seminary at Biddle University. While still a student, and carpenter as well, hewith $200.00 and the help of Mr. William Davidson, Mr. R. Z. Beatty, Mr. Peter Crawford, Mr. Pink Davisand Mr. I. A. Saviller, erected a small place of worship on Johnson Street.

Upon Completion of the church, Mr. Jenkins became its first pastor on December 24, 1899.

In only eight years, the congregation had outgrown the space. Mrs. Margaret Barringer donatedland for a new building on Maple Street. The church was named Brandon for the Barringer’s eldest son.Reverend Jenkins was the contractor of the Maple Street project and was assisted by Mr. Will Davis andMr. John Baker.

Charter members of the church were Mr. Calvin Alexander, Mrs. Julie Dixon, Mr. Joseph Moore, Mrs.Charlotte Moore, Mr. & Mrs. John Rinehart, Mr. Peter Crawford, Mr. J. Adams, Mr. Frank Caldwell, Mr.William Davidson, Mr. Tom Plumer, Mr. Johnson Jordan, Mr. I. A. Saviller and Mr. Jim Williams.

After more than eighty years at the site on Maple Street, Brandon had to relocate because of anUrban Renewal Plan.

A new church was erected at a site purchased on Statesville Avenue and a proposal was madethat the founder, Mr. Charles Newton Jenkins, be memorialized by naming the church in his honor.

The proposal to change the name of the church was discussed with the congregation and votedupon. The Presbytery of Catawba was petitioned for approval. On January 20, 1977, the petition wasaffirmed and the former Brandon United Presbyterian Church became C. N. Jenkins Memorial UnitedPresbyterian Church.

Dr. Thomas A. Jenkins, son of the founder, served as interim pastor during the transition from theMaple Street site to Statesville Avenue. He led the congregation into the newly constructed, renamedchurch for the first worship service on Sunday, March 6, 1977.

On August 1, 1977, the Reverend George C. Goodman became the sixth pastor of the church andthe first full time minister for C. N. Jenkins Memorial United Presbyterian Church.

The church has continued to grow and prosper. It has become self-supporting; there has been asubstantial increase in membership; a broader based leadership and increased participation in churchactivities by young adults; and mission outreach has grown through the commitments of groups like theMen’s Council, which purchased a van to provide needed transportation. The church building fund, aided tremendously by the United Presbyterian Women (UPW), has been substantially boosted. Life inthe church has been characterized by a warm, honey, family-like atmosphere.

Pastoral History

During its long and illustrious history, our church has thrived under the leadership of sevendynamic and innovative ministers, including:

• Dr. Charles Newton Jenkins, founder and builder, 1898-1926.

• Reverend Otto E. Saunders, during whose tenure the church was remodeled and new pewsand a furnace were installed, 1926-1935.

• Dr. Albert P. Corley, who instituted the printing of a weekly bulletin, brought in the new cur-riculum of Sunday School literature, and delivered a special sermon to the children everySunday. Under his administration, the Men’s Council was organized. In 1952, the church wasrenovated and an education building constructed. On July 31, 1952, five months before thenew structure was completed, Dr. Corley died.

• Reverend Samuel J. McLean was installed on February 7, 1954. Under his spiritual guidance,Mr. Evangeline McLean organized the weekly religious classes for the junior age children withMrs. A. P. Corley as director. Mrs. Corley brought recognition to the church when she organ-ized a small children’s choir that appeared on the WBT-TV program, “Five O’Clock Sharp,” in1955. Reverend McLean resigned as pastor in December 1963.

• Reverend Earl E. Newberry was installed in August of 1967. Under his dynamic leadership, atremendous increase in membership was noted, a tutoring program for children was devel-oped, a daycare center was established and a gospel choir was organized under the direc-tion of Mrs. Geraldine Brandon. Reverend Newberry took the initial step and made contactwith the Redevelopment Committee concerning Brandon Presbyterian Church and theGreenville Community. Reverend Newberry served until 1975.

• Reverend Thomas A. Jenkins, interim pastor from 1975-1977.

• Reverend George C. Goodman was installed August 1, 1977 and served until June 1990. Hewas the first full time pastor of C. N. Jenkins Memorial United Presbyterian Church. His inspiredleadership was demonstrated through the outpouring of spiritual growth manifested through-out the congregation by a tremendous increase in membership. He initiated the first newslet-ter, the Acolyte Ministry, and additional projects to help pay off the mortgage on July 17,1985 – just eight years after the initial payment. A Mortgage Burning Celebration was held ayear later on March 2, 1986. During the Anniversary Celebration, a capsule was buried on theChurch grounds near the Church bell holding a copy of the burned mortgage, a copy of thefinal check in the amount of $34,533.54, and artifacts from children and adults of the congre-gation. The capsule was raised on May 21, 2000.

Present MinistryIn September 1992, Reverend Jerry L. Cannon was installed as pastor of C. N. JenkinsMemorial Presbyterian. As a church who focused upon its ministries and mission, it con-tinued this quest. Under the guidance of Rev. Cannon, emphasis has been placedupon worship, leadership development, and community outreach. In order to meet thespiritual needs of each child and adult in the church, various ministries have been imple-mented, adding to the numerous activities which were already in place upon Rev.Cannon’s arrival.

The church provides opportunities for engagement in a variety of ministries. They aredesigned for adults, teens, and younger children. The Christian Education Department

has traditionally offered many ministerial options for youth and children. During the tenure of Rev. Cannon, new programs for children have been implemented including JAM (Jesus and Me), Children’s Church,Cheerleaders, and the Dance Ministry.

Adult ministries offer members opportunities which enable them to enhance their personal walk of faith suchas the Labor of Love. The Breakfast Ministry is a flourishing ministry which has been in existence for severalyears. Additional activities include Greeters and the Shepherding Program.

Numerous training programs, such as the Lay Ministry Training Program, are provided for both new and experi-enced members for the purpose of nurturing and uplifting the spirit and mind. Church Policy classes are nowtaught prior to the installation of new officers. Bible Study is offered during the day and night. A traditionalministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) includes the Presbyterian Women. Many men in the church aremembers of the Men’s Council. These groups serve as missionary outlets for adult members. They sponsor avariety of programs, including Hospice support by the Presbyterian Women and an annual community fellow-ship meal by the Men’s Council.

C. N. Jenkins believes that it must minister to those persons inside and outside of its physical structure. Suchactivities include a partnership with the Women’s Shelter of the Salvation Army, Rebound Christian Center,Hope Haven, AA and NA. It is also a host and sponsor of an AARP Chapter.

Worship continues to be the center of congregational life, focusing upon prayer, praise, music and preaching. The ministry currently offers three worship services in an increased attempt to meet the needs and demands ofa growing congregation. The motto of the church, “Actively Walking and Working In Christ,” provides direc-tion and focus for mission and ministry. Weddings, baptism, revivals and community programs continue to pro-duce new life in our church. The church strives to be spirit-led in all of its endeavors and Christ-centered in thefulfillment of the charges which Jesus has given this body. By God’s grace and ever-increasing faith of itsmembers, the future of C. N. Jenkins will continue to shine as brightly as it has in its past, thereby continuouslyensuring the future of this worshiping community.

On February 18, 2007, Rev. Eustacia Natalie Moffett Marshall was ordained and installedat C.N. Jenkins as the church's first Associate Pastor and the first Associate Pastor to beinstalled at an African American Presbyterian Church in the Presbytery of Charlotte. Rev. Marshall's mother, The Rev. Dr. Diane Givens-Moffett, Senior Pastor of the SaintJames Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC, delivered the ordination/installation sermon making it a historical moment as being the first African American mother anddaughter team ordained in the Presbyterian Church USA. Rev. Marshall maintains over-sight of youth and young adult ministries where she provides vision and leadership forongoing ministry programs and special events.

1 When you go out to dinner with an influential person, mind your manners: 2 Don't gobble your food,

don't talk with your mouth full. 3 And don't stuff yourself; bridle your appetite. 4 Don't wear yourself out

trying to get rich; restrain yourself! 5 Riches disappear in the blink of an eye; wealth sprouts wings and

flies off into the wild blue yonder. 6 Don't accept a meal from a tightwad; don't expect anything spe-

cial. 7 He'll be as stingy with you as he is with himself; he'll say, "Eat! Drink!" but won't mean a word of it.

8 His miserly serving will turn your stomach when you realize the meal's a sham.

or feast with gluttons, 21 for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags.

22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old. 23 Get the
