1917-1919. Angier ...

Dr. John Angier was born in Fitzwilliam, NH in 1784. 1827 was the year the Cobleigh Stand was built as the doctors home. Dr. John Angier first practiced medicine in Alstead, NH before moving to Maine for a short period of time. Cobleigh Tavern, or the Stagecoach Inn as it was earlier called, became the Cottage Hospital.

Dr. John Angier then moved back to Alstead before moving to what would later be known as Cobleigh Stand, or Cobleigh tavern, on River Road in Woodsville. (The old Cottage hospital)

It is reported that Dr. Angier was an excellent physician during his 50 year life. Unfortunately the doctor was killed after being thrown from his buggy while he was on a short trip to Weathersfield, Vt.

Bittingers History of Haverhill, 1888, describes Dr. Angier as a look alike for General Jackson. Dr. Angier was in the state legislature and was mistaken for Jackson when the president and visiting in Concord.

Amos Kimball purchased what was known as the Atkinson Farm on January 27th, 1795. He bought it from George King Sparhawk and later, (4-23-1827) sold it to John Angier. Angier was a doctor and the old cottage hospital building was built for Dr. Angier in 1827. The doctor was killed after being thrown from his buggy in 1836. Records show Dr. Angier sold the Atkinson farm the same day he purchased it!

The land was later known as Wallace Hill and is now Hastings Hill. Angier sold the farm to Dudley C. Kimball. It is likely only a part of the farm was sold because Dr. Angier later sold the farm, or part of it, to Francis D. Kimball on January 8th, 1828. Kimball sold it back to Angier a day later! And, Dr. Angier then sold it to Windsor Cobleigh on April 9th, 1838. Go to the “H” file (Hastings) for the complete sale history of this property.

Miss Annis took over more than half the unruly pupils from the former room and with plenty of tact and a strong will, organized a model grammar school with three grades.
