November 2015 As the early childhood report-card phrase reminds us, “Plays well with others” is a key to success, whether you’re in a boardroom or a child-care room. All children need support to learn how to get along with others, especially when we ask them to welcome and appreciate those who are different. You can help your child become a caring friend by talking about the characters in the stories you read. In this month’s story “Mouse in the House” (pages 26 to 30), a cat discovers that even a mouse can become a good companion. After reading the story, talk with your child about the cat’s initial reaction to the mouse and why the cat reconsidered her response. Then discuss what she did to turn an “enemy” into a friend. I hope our stories will be the springboards to many fruitful conversations. Have fun reading and talking together!

Tex and Indi and their family were settling in to watch a movie. But when Dad turned on the TV, it turned off again—and so did all the lights in the house! “What happened?” asked Tex. “The wind must have knocked down a power line,” said Mom. “Now we can’t watch our movie!” said Indi.
“But now we can do something even more fun,” said Dad. He grabbed a flashlight and aimed it at the wall. “Arf! Arf !” he barked. “Let’s have a shadow-puppet show!”
Lights Out!
Indi put two fingers up. “Look!” she said. “I’m a bunny!”

“Watch out!” said Tex. “I’m a hungry monster!”
“You better watch out!” said Arizona. “I’m a hungry-monster catcher!”
When the power came back on, Mom said, “Now we can watch our movie.” “Too bad,” said Arizona. “I love shadow puppets.” “Hey, I have an idea,” said Indi. “Let’s pretend the power’s still out, and keep having fun!” And that’s exactly what they did.

Have You Any Honey?
“Buzz, buzz, honeybee, have you any honey?” “Yes, I do. A jar for you, hungry little bunny.
A bucket for the baker and a bottle for his dame and a basketful for brown bear who lives down the lane.”

Doña Rosa Gets Cold Feet
Doña Rosa was at the lake with her friend Mary. They were standing on one leg, chatting about the latest news in their flamingo colony. Mary was shivering. “The water is very cold today!” she said. “It is!” said Doña Rosa. “I have an idea.”
Doña Rosa stepped out of the lake and walked to town.
¿Tiene botas?
Buenas tardes.Doña Rosa
Sí, tengo botas azules.
At the shoe store, the clerk greeted her. “Buenas tardes, Doña Rosa,” she said. “Buenas tardes,” replied Doña Rosa. “¿Tiene botas?” “Sí, tengo botas azules,” she said, showing Doña Rosa a pair of blue boots.
Meet Doña Rosa! She lives in Miami and, like many of her friends, she speaks Spanish AND English.

“Tengo botas rojas,” she said, showing her a pair of red boots.
“Tengo botas verdes,” she said, showing her a pair of green boots.
. . . botas verdes.
Doña Rosa bought the bright blue boots and headed back to the lake.
When Doña Rosa arrived, Mary was still there, with one foot in the water. “Look!” said Doña Rosa. “I bought us a beautiful pair of blue boots— one for you, and one for me.”
“Thank you!” said Mary. “This feels much better.”
Tengo botas rojas.

Paulina Rabbit’s basket was filled with spinach, apples, chestnuts, and a big pumpkin. As she headed home, she met her friends along the way. “Hi, Paulina,” said Henry Mouse. “I see you bought some spinach. When I shopped at the market, it was already gone.” “You may have mine,” said Paulina. “Wow! Thanks,” said Henry.
“My family loves apples,” said Greta Squirrel. “But I forgot to buy them.” “Please take these,” Paulina said. “Why, thank you,” said Greta.
A Good Day for Sharing
“And I was going to roast chestnuts,” said Ralph Beaver, “but I don’t have any.” “I do,” said Paulina. “Please take mine.” “That’s very kind of you,” said Ralph with a smile.
After her friends left, Paulina looked in her basket and said, “I can still make a pumpkin pie.”

While Paulina was making the pumpkin pie, her friends came to visit. “I’ve made a big spinach salad,” said Henry. “Do you want to have dinner with me?” “My family wants to share our applesauce with you,” said Greta. “And I made roasted chestnuts for all of us,” said Ralph.
“Why, thank you,” said Paulina. “Why don’t you come for dinner tonight. With all you’ll bring and my pie, there will be plenty for everyone.”
“It’s a good day for sharing,” said Paulina, smiling.

Itty-Bitty Kitty saw a mouse in her house. “This is my house!” said Itty-Bitty Kitty. “Mouse, you must go away.” “Please, may I stay?” said Mouse. “You have a very big house and a very big chair. Why don’t we share?”
“Don’t be silly,” said Itty-Bitty Kitty. “A kitten and a mouse can’t share a house. No, no, no! Off you go!”
Mouse in the House

The mouse went away and the kitten sat in her chair. It was a very big chair in a very big house that was very quiet.
Itty-Bitty Kitty sat and sat. There was no one to talk to and no one to play with. If she told a joke, no one would laugh.
30 November 2015
Itty-Bitty Kitty went to the door and called, “Mouse, do come back! You are right! I have a very big house and a very big chair. It’s only fair to share.”
