When you enter this church, it may be possible that you hear “the call of God”. However, it is unlikely that He will call you on your cell phone. Thank you for turning off your phones. If

you want to talk to God, enter, choose a quiet place and talk to Him. If you want to see God, send Him a text while driving.

PLEASE REMEMBER… to contact the church office if you or a loved one are hospitalized, in rehab facility, or facility other than your home. Pastor and Stephen Ministers will make a visit. DID YOU KNOW.. Perfume and cologne can trigger life-threatening breathing emergencies in persons with asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Hospitals and schools are becoming ‘scent-free’ due to this increasing health hazard. Please be sensitive to this concern when coming to church. Thank You.

LITTLE FOLKS.. Parents… please remember that there are ‘busy bags’ hanging on the

coat tree in the Narthex to occupy the little ones during worship. Simply return the bags to the tree on your way out of church. Thank you.

BE COMFORTABLE.. There are shawls in the Narthex that you can use if chilled during worship. Just ask one of the ushers and they will get you one. Simply return to the narthex on your way out of the church.

HEARING DEVICES.. Hearing assist devices are available at the sound booth. The wheel at the top adjusts the volume. When turned on, the light on top should be green. If it is red, please place the device on the counter in the sound booth and take another. Thank you! PRELUDE INTRODUCTION The Hebrew people were alone and frightened in a new land. Their leader had disappeared up a mountain and hadn’t been seen since. Their instinct was to return to the gods they knew—the gods of Egypt. When God’s wrath burned hot for them, Moses reminded God that God needed to learn the ways of the people before the people could learn the ways of God.

P God Is Good! C All the time P All the time C God Is Good!

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P Blessed be the Holy Trinity, ☩ one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love.

C Amen.

P Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us silently confess our sin against God and one another.

Pause for silence and reflection.

P God of all ages,

C You have chosen us as your own, yet we so often live as if it were not

so. We succumb to things which are not good for us. We believe we

know better than you. We refuse to put our trust in your promises.

Sweep away our foolishness and bring

us back into a trusting relationship with the one who has lovingly

created us and longs to be our strength and life.

P Almighty God, in his mercy has given his Son to die for us and, for his

sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the

Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare you the entire

forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son,

and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

First Lesson Exodus 32: 1-14

32 When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2 Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off the gold rings from their ears, and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took the gold from them, formed it in a mold,[a] and cast an image of a calf; and they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a festival to the LORD.” 6 They rose early the next day, and offered burnt offerings and brought sacrifices of well-being; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel. 7 The LORD said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; 8 they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’” 9 The LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. 10 Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation.” 11 But Moses implored the LORD his God, and said, “O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14 And the LORD changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.

R The word of the Lord C Thanks be to God PSALM 73: 1-8 Read Responsively R 1 Truly God is good to the upright,[a]

to those who are pure in heart. C 2 But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled;

my steps had nearly slipped. R 3 For I was envious of the arrogant;

I saw the prosperity of the wicked. C 4 For they have no pain;

their bodies are sound and sleek. R 5 They are not in trouble as others are;

they are not plagued like other people. C 6 Therefore pride is their necklace;

violence covers them like a garment. R 7 Their eyes swell out with fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. C 8 They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression.

GOSPEL: Luke 23: 26-43

26 As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the days are surely coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us’; and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus[a] there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. [[34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”]][b] And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah[c] of God, his chosen one!” 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription over him,[d] “This is the King of the Jews.”39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding[e] him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah?[f] Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.”

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

15

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen PRAYER INVOCATION

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

P We pray for the church, the world, and all those in need.

A brief silence.

P So often we miss the mark, just as the ancient Israelites did, when we

look to other sources to fill our need for you, O Lord. Forgive us for all

the foolish ways in which we fail to trust you, and gently lead us back

onto the path that leads to life. Patient God,

C Hear our prayer.

P As our Jewish sisters and brothers celebrate the gift of your holy word,

we rejoice that we have also received the words which proclaim your

promises of never-ending love and eternal life for all your people.

Patient God,

C Hear our prayer.

P Sometimes this world seems full of danger and fury, with storms and

conflict raging around us. Give us peace in the middle of the tempest

and assure us that your presence has never left us. Patient God,

C Hear our prayer.

P Help those who have been misled by cults and harmful ideologies to find

their way back to your life-giving grace. Be with all who feel abandoned

or isolated, and send your healing spirit to those whom we name this

day especially those suffering or serving the needs of others during this

pandemic. Patient God,

C Hear our prayer.

17

P Whether we live or die, we belong to you, O Lord. Assure us of the

promise of your resurrection, and when our time on earth is finished,

unite us once more with all your saints in light. Patient God,

C Hear our prayer.

P We pray for all of our mission congregations, Araby Acres in Yuma,

Crossroads Lutheran in San Tan Valley, Maricopa Lutheran in Maricopa,

San Juan Bautista Lutheran in Tucson, and Vida Nueva Lutheran in

Glendale. We also pray for our care ministries that serve the needs of

others, ChristCare, Stephen Ministry, GriefShare and Mental Health

Ministry, may they reach all people in need. Patient God,

C Hear our prayer.

Here other petitions may be offered. Together we pray

C Lord, you know what is best for our church family. Give us what you

will, when you will, and as much as you will. Do with us as you think

best, and as it pleases you and brings you the most honor. Place each

of us where you will, and use us according to your wisdom. We are in

your hand as your servants, ready to do all that you command. We

want to live, not for ourselves, but for you. We want to serve you

fittingly and faithfully, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

P Receive our prayers into your merciful arms, for the sake of Jesus our

savior and friend. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Communion is open to all baptized believers who know Jesus as Savior and seek to live with him as Lord of all areas of life. You receive the wafer in your hand and choose from the individual cup of wine or white grape juice. Those who do not commune may come forward for a blessing, simply cross your arms in front of your chest to request a blessing. Simply complete a slip found in the pew box and place it in the offering. Consider the options on reverse side as to how you may serve this congregation.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
