SAL News Ken Stapleton - Commander Adjutant’s Notes Butch Auchterlonie

2018 Membership Report Our 2018 Post membership has finalized at 745 for 106.13%. We have grown to become the 3rd largest Post in New York state, up from 5th last year. We lacked an additional 17 members to be number one. We are one of only 6 Posts in Onondaga County to achieve 100% and one of 20 in the NY 5th District (81 Posts). We recruited more new members than any other Post in the state with the exception of the NY City Police Dept. The Department of New York missed goal by 15,652 and finished at 84.79%.

We currently have 39 PUFL (Paid up for Life) members and 35 Honorary Life members. Honorary Life members include all Past Post Commanders and Post 787 members having at least 41 consecutive years in the Legion. In addition, this year we awarded Henry ‘Hank” Henniger Honorary Life Membership for his outstanding work as the Post webmas-ter.

The goal for 2019 is to become number one in the State!

Membership is our lifeblood and everyone needs to contin-ue to recruit new members. We were proud this year to have awarded seven of our family members the National Commander Denise Rohan’s Family First pin for recruiting at least three new Legion Family members (Legion, Auxiliary, or Sons): Ann Marie Cerone (Aux)

Sharon May (Aux) Gina Roskopf (Aux)

Wendell Stewart (Leg) Lyle Porter (Leg)

Bruce Dauer (Leg) Doug Engel (Son)

We awarded three Legionnaires the Department of New York Commander Rena Nessler’s Commander Coin for recruiting three new Legionnaires:

Wendell Stewart Bruce Dauer Lyle Porter

Hello Auxiliary Sisters! Hope everyone had a great 4th of July! We held our monthly bake sale and bingo night. Thank you to all who came to both events and supported our cause to help out veterans, active duty and their families. We are gearing up for a busy and successful new calendar year for the Auxiliary. We will be starting off with a cookout with our Juniors. This will be held on Sunday, August 5th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. This is open to all Juniors and their families and we en-courage them to bring a friend along who may be eligible to join. The Juniors from the Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Le-gion are hosting the event. If you have any questions, please con-tact Gina Roskopf at [email protected]. Our Annual Ice Cream Social Membership Drive is being com-bined with the Sons of the American Legion’s Annual Steak Bake Membership Drive. This will be held on Sunday, August 19th from 1:00 pm till 4:00 pm. A delicious steak dinner cooked to order for $12.00 advance sale and $15.00 at the door. Although both events are being held together, the ice cream sundae bar is free to all. All Legion Families will have membership tables up and ready for re-newals and new members to join. Joey is back!!! Ladies we are hosting another Purse Extravaganza Sunday, August 12th from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The Sons of the American Legion will also be having another of their fabulous chicken BBQ’s! Cost for the Chicken BBQ is $10.00 for a full dinner and $7.00 chicken only. On Sunday, September 23rd the Cicero American Legion Family is hosting a Gold Star Mother Commemoration Luncheon. For those of you who may not know, we have a Gold Star Mother in our Unit. Her name is Mary Bergen, she lost a son in Vietnam. The luncheon will consist of a NYS Strip Steak or Stuffed Chicken Breast with baked potato, vegetable, salad and dessert. Cost of the dinner is $20.00 p/p. All proceeds from this event will go the Gold Star Moth-er Organization. Advance sale tickets will be available for purchase starting August 6th. Let’s all ban together to make this a wonderful day for these women and their families who have given so much. Please contact Ann Marie Cerone at [email protected] for more information or to make a donation to help defray the cost of the dinner.

We have started a new program within the Unit. There is a short information form that we would like all Auxiliary members to fill out. You do not have to put your name on it. We are looking for sugges-tions for new events, what you like and don’t like about the Unit and what we can do to make it better. Judy Weimer is chairman of this, please contact her at [email protected]. If you do not have the form they are available next to the Auxiliary bulletin board across from the ladies’ room. Please put it in the auxiliary box or e-mail Judy Weimer and she will forward one to you. Beginning, Thursday September 13th, the monthly meet-ings are moving to the Second Thursday of each month. We also are changing the time to 6:00 P.M. We will be meeting in the Ban-quet Room. There are be many reminders being sent out about this. …….. continued

A special Notice! Please be advised, the dues for the Auxiliary are now $25.00 for membership. For the Juniors the dues are $7.00. Our Unit has not raised dues in 8 years. This increase was mandated by Department. So, when taking in new mem-bers or renewals, please be mindful of the increase.

Please remember, always carry your membership card with you. You’ll need it for Auxiliary meetings and to purchase alco-hol at the bar.

For God and Country and in the Spirit of Service Not Self, Ann Marie Cerone President, Unit 787

From the Chaplain: Dear members, You are in distress when a loved one becomes ill, have sur-gery, get injured or passes away, that is understandable, but please let the Chaplain know as soon as possible so our Legion can take appropriate action. I check the obituaries each morn-ing, but if no mention of military service or being a Legion mem-ber, the family may think we don't care which is never the case. Please email or call Chaplain Heidenreich with information at [email protected] or 315-345-0702 or 315-458-3895. Thanks - Heidi

Let’s remember our shut-ins and members in nursing homes and hospitals. Perhaps visit

them or send a joyful card so that they know they are not forgotten.

Are their dues paid? Perhaps you can help!
