    PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

    Dear riends and colleagues,

On behal o the executive committee, I would like to express how much we appreciate so many o you or

your great support o the Academy o LDS Dentists. Our recent 34th Annual Conerence was a real success.

I hope those o you who were able to attend eel as well rewarded or your time and eorts as I do. I appre-

ciated the inormation provided by the clinicians and the variety o topics. It was dicult to choose which

classes to attend. The spouses program was also exceptional, and we extend our thanks to all who spoke,

perormed, or took part in any way to make the meeting such a ullling experience.

We eel very ortunate to have BYUs Scott Harris as the administrative assistant over our annual coner-

ence. Scott has a antastic background o experience and skills. He and his assistants, Abe Collier and Anna

Strange, and the other sta members certainly prepared or and acilitated the success o our meeting.

During this past year, under Dave Geddes direction, our student chapters have grown to 27 in number and have begun doing things

to help our upcoming generation o proessionals. Our hope is that we can provide a resource to enhance our student members

time in school so they will eel comortable and better prepared or leadership positions. In many ways we can mentor them to more

successully become active participants in our wonderul proession. We envision that they will establish a bond with the Academy,

and that it will be a help to them in many areas as they prepare to set up practice and beyond.

The annual dues to the Academy provide scholarships or a number o dental and hygiene students. The dues also help with the

basic expenses o some humanitarian projects, like the very successul clinic in Guatemala. Even i you did not have the opportunity

to attend the annual August conerence, where dues-paying members received a discount, your tax-deductible ees are still very

much needed and would be greatly appreciated.

At our meeting, we were able to see some ne examples o dedicated humanitarian service. At the table displays in the hall, we met

some champions o and participants in dental service projects being done in many countries. We had opportunities to sign up to

serve with those groups. During the luncheons, we viewed the presentations o Drs. Karl Koerner and David Pulsipher. They both

showed how they were able to very successully involve their amily and riends in giving extensive proessional service in China,

Tonga and the South Pacic. Soon you will be able to view their inormative and inspiring presentations about their projects on our

website under Service. Also ound under Service are descriptions o many opportunities to share our proessional skills in inter-

esting and underserved areas o the world.

We are expanding and rening the Academys website http://www.AcademyOLDSDentists.com. While you visit the site, we encour-

age you to take a minute to share the blessings and opportunities o the Academy with other LDS dentists. Under the Join button,

click on Invite a Dentist. Just typing in a dentists name and any type o contact inormation will allow him or her to be placed on

our mailing list. We can then extend to that person the newsletter, opportunities or service, the annual conerence, and other ben-ets o knowing about (or having contact with) the Academy.

I hope each o us will make plans to attend next years conerence. It is an outstanding experience or the entire amily. I also suggest

that you invite your associates in the proession, specialist riends, and sta members to attend next years meeting with you. Please

mark your calendars or the 2012 conerence, which will be held August 1011.

I wish you the best in your proessional and personal lives.

34TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ACADEMY OF LDS DENTISTSummarized by Evan Roundy, Academys Vice President

The 34th Annual Conerence o the

Academy o LDS Dentists was a great suc-

cess. We had outstanding presenters, an in-

    spiring reside speaker, inspiring examples

    o humanitarian service, and riendships

to make and renew. We appreciate all who

attended, and we eel like this is the best

    continuing education experience available.

Following is a brie synopsis o the

    presenters:

    Jeff Brucia discussed bonding systems

and composites and how to get a predict-

    able, long-lasting result. He cautioned

against jumping on the latest generation o

materials just because it is new. Some older

    products continue to outperorm new

and improved products. I it is working or

you, dont be too anxious to change.

    Lee Silverstein spoke about bisphospho-

nates and dentistry. He reiterated that the

    highest likelihood o developing BRONJ

    (Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis o

the Jaw) is related to IV use during chemo-

therapy. I you have a patient who has been

    through chemotherapy, assume they have

had it and treat them accordingly. Oral

bisphosphonates are less likely to cause

BRONJ, but care must be taken the longer

a patient has been on them. He later dis-

cussed the use o acellular dermal matrix

as a grating material or root coverage

without utilizing the palate as a donor site.

Ray Padilla reviewed the emergency pro-

tocol or avulsed teeth and the importance

o using custom mouth guards to protect

teeth. In the aternoon session he demon-

    strated a method o abricating a mouth

guard that is simple and eective.

Linda Miles presented her our corner-

stones o success, which are: communica-

    tion, system organization, motivation, and

appreciation. She elaborated on each o

these topics and said, Tough times call or

    tough strategies. Excellent patient service

can reactivate some ormer patients. Treat

every patient as i he were a piece o gold.

    Michael Ignelzi spoke about prevention

using fuoride and sealants. He said varnish

is the best way to apply fuoride, and that

bonding sealants will greatly increase their

retention. He discussed pulp therapy or

primary teeth and restorative materials orpediatric patients.

    Barry Musikant discussed the advantage

o using reamers rather than les to clean

and shape canals. He later expanded on

this topic, including the use o a reciprocat-

ing handpiece that will greatly increase the

ease and speed o the procedure.

    Gordon Christensen discussed the

rapid shit rom PFM to all ceramic crowns

in the U.S. He talked about the dierent

systems available and their advantages and

disadvantages. He encouraged us to use

caution and to not abandon an old riend

just because there is a new kid on the

block. He talked about how and what to

    use to cement these crowns.

    FRIDAY NIGHTS FIRESIDESPEAKERROBERT L. MILLET

Brother Millet gave an insightul and inspir-

ing message about aith, hope, and the

grace o God. He told us to not be so hard

on ourselves and to enjoy the journey. He

said that as long as we stay on the path, it

will lead us to our Heavenly Father.

    HUMANITARIAN SERVICE AWAR

What an inspiration our recipients are! W

appreciate the noble and great eorts t

have made. The world is a better place

when we serve those in need. The awar

    recipients are:

Karl Koerner, who has led several trip

to China, where his team has treated or

phans, taught dental techniques, and b

    involved in clet-lip repair.

David and Joann Pulsipher, who have

been to Tonga many times and have rend

    great service. Sister Pulsipher spearheade

a school program to help Tongan student

learn English so they could go to college.

    STATEMENTS ABOUT THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE

AMY (AND STEVEN) CRANESANOSE, CALIFORNIA, long-time attendees

Dr. Steven Crane earns CE credits every

month and is on the board o a Caliornia

ental society. So why does he travel hun-

reds o miles every summer to attend the

    cademy o LDS Dentists Conerence?

s simple. You wont nd a group o more

    pliting, dedicated, intelligent and suc-

essul people on the earth. The Academy

ttracts presenters o international ame but

as an intimate setting. We always come

way with new ideas to improve the prac-

ce. Its great to nd people with similar

nterests who are so willing to share their

    deas, says Dr. Crane.

he biggest secret, however, is the amilyrogram. I have never ound a conerence

with such great activities or the kids. Ours

eg to go back every year.

my loves the ood service. Ater eating with

my spouse, instead o cleaning up, I get to

njoy wonderul speakers who cover such di-

erse topics as parenting and nding joy in lie.

s so upliting that I eel inspired to be better

very year. Because o our shared experiences,

really eel such a connection to the spouses

hat I consider them to be like sisters.

he Cranes have traveled around the world,

ut attending the Academy o LDS Dentistsonerence is our avorite vacation.

Maybe its time or you to give it a try.

    NEIL (ANDTHERESA)NIXONTAYLORSVILLE,UTAH, long-timeattendees

    As usual, this years

    Academy o LDS

    Dentists Conerence

was excellent. The conerence keeps the

presentations on target, concise, and ap-

plicable to a typical dental practice. The

presenters are usually candid in their pre-

    sentations, which I appreciate.

    All o this

    great continu-

    ing education

    is coupled

    with special

    social interac-

    tion, great

    ood, and a

    wonderul

spouse program, as well as a Friday night

reside that lits ones spiritual and mental

    vision o lies purposes.

Many opportunities are made available to

those interested and prepared to do hu-

manitarian service. Several years ago we

took three o our teenage children with us

to Peru on a 10-day humanitarian excursion

and had an extraordinary experience. Our

group helped a poor village build our adobe

homes and cover their open well. We also

were able to help with some o the villagers

dental and medical needs beore we contin-

ued on to see Machu Picchu and some other

amazing tourist sites. It was really great! My wie and I look orward every year to at-

    tending the conerence.

ROSS E. (AND KARI) SANFORDMEDFORD, OREGON, have attendedover 30 years

With all the continuing education that I

must accumulate, it is always a oregone

conclusion that I will attend the Academys

annual conerence in Provo along with my

wie and our kids. We particularly enjoy the

atmosphere o the meeting with its cama-raderie and brotherhood. Where else can

one go and have each day and each meal

started with prayer? When we attend BYU,

we know there are standards to be ollowed.

Furthermore, the ee is still a great bargain!

The dental presenters are hands-on dentists

who understand the ins and outs o every-

day practice and thereore can teach us the

real world. And o course it would not be

    complete without hearing rom Gordon

    Christensen.

As or the spouses conerence, my wie a

ways comes away uplited and renewed. W

have also brought all ve o our kids to th

meetings since they were very small. The

have made riends and have a wonderul

    time each year.

One o the best aspects o the Academy

conerences is the spiritual lit. I particula

enjoy the Friday evening dinner meeting

    with wonderul reside speakers.

Over the years, I have been on eight brig

das to South and Central America, teach

endodontics to some wonderul people w

have become lasting riends. Each time I g

I receive much more than I give.

    KIP STERLING,STUDENTCHAPTERPRESIDENTUNIVERSITY OCOLORADO, frtime attendee

    Returning to Prov

    as a dental studen

or the Academys annual conerence was

quite a treat. Both days o the conerence

were lled with stimulating lectures and u

dates in dentistry. It was a great opportun

to integrate my blossoming dental educat

    with practical and evidence-based strateg

or success as a dentist. Between the mee

    ings there were tremendous opportunitie

to catch up with riends and network with

my uture colleagues. I came back to scho

rereshed and ready to continue learning

how to be the best dentist possible to ser

    others.

    We recently ocially organized the

University o Colorado student chapter o

the Academy. We held an opening social abarbeque in August and a 3v3 basketball

    tournament in September as ellowship-

ping events. We look orward to hosting D

Gordon Christensen in January as an edu

cational event. Were excited to be planni

to abricate mouth guards in the spring o

    HUMANITARIAN SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

By Wayne Chisholm, Academys Service Chairman

Many o our dental riends eel that they just arent in a position

to do humanitarian service. They say, Maybe when I retire, or

maybe when the children, or grandchildren, or great grandchil-

dren are grown up, then we could go.

The questions to ask are, I not me, who? I not now, when? As

in the story above, many countries do not have enough dentists

to care or their population. We may not be able to help every-

one, but every single lling, every single root canal, every single

extraction makes a dierence to that patient.

There are service opportunities available or every situation.

Some require a trip or as little as one week, while others re-

quire as much as two years. Some let you choose when and orhow long you will go. Whatever is workable or you will make a

    dierence.

Below are some service opportunities that are currently available

advantages we have had. Lets share. Lets all be able to say, I

The Starsh StoryOriginal story by Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he

noticed a boy picking something up and gently

    throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, What are you doing?

The youth replied, Throwing starsh back into the ocean.

The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I dont throw

    them back, theyll die.

Son, the man said, dont you realize there are miles and

miles of beach and hundreds of starsh? You cant make a

    difference!

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up an-

other starsh, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling

at the man, he said, I made a difference for that one.

    PLEASE NOTE:

is not on this list, please contact Wayne Chisholm at

Melanie and I spent a delightul week in September

with Ron and Judy Tobler and Rich and Leann Call at the

Guatemala Clinic. Although I have been involved with the

clinic since its beginnings, until recently I had never taken

the opportunity to serve there. We were treated most hos-

pitably and had a great experience.

I would like to thank Paul and Joann Fillmore, who were

recently released rom their mission, or the tremendous

job they did to get the clinic up and going. Paul was able

to acquire all the licenses and permits required to operate

the clinic and has set a great oundation upon which we

can build. He has contacted most o the local priesthood

leaders; they are aware o the clinic and reer potential

missionaries there or treatment. The clinic also has estab-

lished contacts with other orphanages and is beginning

to see patients rom them. They have treated most o the

To Juan children and have them on recall. They also have

had some brigadas to other sites. They will certainly be

missed, and their infuence or good will be elt or years

    to come.

Rich and Leann Call are the new clinic directors. Rich

brings a wealth o experience to the position, having taken

several groups to Guatemala to perorm humanitarian

work. We look orward to his leadership and are excited to

see what the next phase o development o the clinic will

    be under his direction.

Ron and Judy Tobler will complete their mission in

November. They have been stalwart and hard-working

missionaries. The kids love them and give them big hugs

when they see them. Their eorts and work have blessedmany people.

The clinic is a great acility. It is well organized, and the

equipment is excellent. We were able to work on mission-

aries, pre-missionaries, and children rom the orphanages.

We did restorations, root canals, extractions and recall

visits. The pace is relaxed and enjoyable, and at the end

o the day you eel good about what you have done. We

worked on an orphan girl named Nelci, age 4, who was as

good a patient as you could ask or. We also saw patients

rom the MTC (CCM in Spanish) and potential missionar-

ies. Over the past year, the clinic has prepared about 400

    missionaries or service.

The clinic is the perect humanitarian service opportu-

nity. You can go on your own schedule. You can serve the

amount o time you want, rom a week to months. You can

go any time o the year, and the weather will be about 75

degreesthey call it the land o the eternal spring.

It is not terribly expensive. You pay or the airare and

accommodations (rom $30 to $85 a night), meals, andor any additional sightseeing excursions you want to

take. Guatemala has many ascinating sites, like Tikal and

Antigua, and beautiul places to visit. The clinic is all set

up with modern equipment and supplies, as good as you

have in your own oce, so you dont necessarily need to

    bring anything.

You are providing a tremendous service by helping to pre-

pare young people to serve missions. This changes their

lives, intercepting potential problems o new missionaries

beore they get into the eld and taking care o the sweet-

est young orphan kids. You will have a great experience.

To reach them, contact: [email protected] or

[email protected]. You wont regret going.
