LONGHORN CHRONICLE
Greetings from the Principal
Dear Longhorn Students and Staff,
Oh, what a year. The time has come for the 2014-2015 school year
to end and as we reflect, we can’t help but to celebrate. It has been
such a pleasure to witness the wonderful awards and recognitions
earned by our students. From the outstanding performance in band
and choir to winning the UIL Sweepstakes to our Sea Perch Team
winning at Nationals, NRJH continues to shine bright as a result of
students’ hard work and dedication. Words can’t express enough
how proud I am of each of you and it is my hope that you have a
fun filled summer. Always remember that Longhorns
are….respectful, responsible and caring; at home, at school and in
the community.
Longhorns R.O.C.K.

Culinary Adventures in Houston! By: Abby Frye
Breakfast:
The Breakfast Klub:
Although the name of this restaurant might be a play
on the title of John Hughes’ coming-of-age flick, you
can expect to find delicious home-style Southern
food rather than Molly Ringwald at this Houston
gem. The Breakfast Klub is known especially for
their hearty chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy,
and other breakfast classics. If you can wait out the
long lines that form on weekends, you can go fill up
your stomach with speedy and clean service.
The House of Pies: Do not be fooled, The House of Pies is not just good
for desserts. They serve one of the best breakfasts in
town. For low prices, you get generous portions of
simple but scrumptious recipes. This hole-in-the-
wall has multiple
locations around Houston, all equally delicious and
open 24/7. So, stop in whenever and load up on
plenty of eggs, bacon, and maybe an early dessert
with a slice of pie.
Lunch:
Kenny and Ziggy’s: When you step into
this delicatessen restaurant, you feel as
though you’ve been transported to the
alphabet city. After chowing down on bagels,
latkes, and their signature Zellagabetsky
(that’s an eight decker sandwich) next to
autographed playbills and caricatures lining
the walls, you’ll feel like a true New Yorker.
Good Dog Houston:
For an unexpected meal outing, try Good Dog
Houston, one of the many great food trucks local to
H-Town. Good Dog Houston is not like any other
hot-dog joint you’ve been to. For starters, it’s on
four wheels. Secondly, they serve the highest quality
ingredients with locally made frankfurters, artisan
buns, and fresh toppings. Find this artisan delight at
903 Studewood Street, Houston, TX 77008.

dishes for dinner, Kelley’s is the right
place. With big portions and low
prices, it’s perfect for bringing the
whole family. You can find Kelley’s
Country Cookin’ at several locations
in the greater Houston area. So, go
ahead and chow down on some of their
best recipes, like their jumbo filled
baked potatoes, mac & cheese, and
tasty desserts. It’s sure to be a comfort
food delight.
Star Pizza: Open since 1976, Star
Pizza provides a comfortable atmosphere with unique and fresh pizza. Ask for just about any pizza, and they will
have it: white, wheat, deep dish, gluten-free, vegan/vegetarian, with a plethora of toppings available. It has free
wifi, indoor and outdoor seating, catering, take-out, delivery, and its pet friendly! It is sure to be a crowd pleaser!
Underbelly: For a classy dinner for just the parents go to Underbelly. It’s an upscale restaurant and wine bar
with inventive foods. Try some of their most beloved dishes like braised goat & dumplings, pork belly, or vinegar
pie! You’ll have the perfect night with a lovely staff, perfectly-cooked food and a cool ambiance!
Entertainment after Your
Meal:
There are plenty of great places to go after
a meal. Try the Abstract Expressionist
Kikuo Saito Exhibition for a modern and
unique art experience or the Art Car
Museum for a fun and wacky time with the
family.
Theater Under the Stars or TUTS is a
splendid production to catch, or take a
Bayou City Bike Tour to see various sights.
Check out Froberg's Farm to pick fresh fruit
and buy artisan goods, or the Houston
Aboretum and Nature Center to have a fun
day outdoors! Source: (Images via thebreakfastklub.com, foodydirect.com, chron.com, thekatynews.com).

Q: When did you decide you wanted to become an Assistant Principal?
A: “I decided I wanted to be an Assistant Principal when I was a freshman in college. “
Q: Would you want to be an Assistant Principal at Nolan Ryan Jr. High? A: “If I was to become an Assistant Principal and I could come back to my school (Nolan Ryan), then yes, but if I couldn't, being an
Assistant Principal for the district would be cool too.”
Q: Who were some of your role models? A: “My role model was my fifth and sixth grade teacher Ms. Mooney and
Ms. Rivers. “
Q: Why do you think you were voted “Paraprofessional of the Year?” Do you think it would help you become an Assistant Principal? A: “I don't know, I was shocked to know I made “Paraprofessional of the Year,” but I think my coworkers enjoy being around me
and I enjoy being around them. Also, I think it may look good on my resume. “
Q: What advice do you have for those that are pursuing teaching? A: “I would say after you graduate from high school go straight to college and think about it first. If you enjoy working with kids
(that’s the main thing) you would be an excellent teacher!
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE A STUDENT OR STAFF MEMBER OF THE MONTH THEN DO
SOMETHING GREAT AND TELL SOMEONE ON THE YEARBOOK STAFF!

learning.”

grade.” Q: What do you like about teaching?
A: “I like helping students and I enjoy mingling with other teachers. I also enjoy the district I’m teaching in.”
Q: If you could change anything about this school year what would it be?
A: “I wouldn't change anything about my school year. I think that it's been a great year. If I could, I would change the fights that we had; however, things do happen but we had a good
year. “ Q: What are your goals for the next few years?
A: “I would like to become an Assistant Principal. “
Para of the Year: Ms. Ellis strikes a pose.

Steps to follow to stay safe from the sun:
1. Cover up when outside. Wear hats to protect your face as much as
possible. Also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes to keep UV radiation
from hitting them.
2. Wear broad spectrum sunscreen at least to SPF 30. Reapply every
2 hours when needed.
3. Shade is very important to staying safe in the sun. 10:00am -
4:00pm are the strongest hours of UV radiation. So seeking shade in that
timeframe is very essential.
4. Try to avoid tanning beds and sunlamps which can cause long-
term skin damage that can lead to skin cancer.
Banana Boat SPF- This brand has many different “powers”. The
smallest they have is
SPF 15. It also comes in both a spray and rub-on sunscreen, as well
as, the stick kind for your face. Price: $8.
Neutrogena Ultra Stick Sunscreen Broad Spectrum- Neutrogena’s
sunscreen has a swivel stick and no mess application. It is lightweight
and helps to protect your skin keeping it gorgeous. Price: $11.
Australian Gold 30 SPF Lotion with Kona Coffee Bronzers- This
sunscreen brand helps protect your skin and tans it at the same time
all at a very reasonable price of: $9.

Whether you are in the water or
not, you can still get a sunburn.
So, sunscreen is an important
part of the equation and finding
the right one for your specific
needs can be a challenge. Some
sunscreen brands are expensive,
but you don’t need the most
“pricey” one to protect your
skin. Below are some budget-
friendly options you can chose
from.
At last summer has arrived and
school is out. Although summer is
full of fun in the sun, laughter and
lasting memories, there are some
important safety tips that you should
keep in mind. During the scorching
summer months, (especially here in
Texas), where temperatures rise
above 100 degrees, the sun’s UV
radiation can be brutal on your skin.
However, products like sunscreen
can help protect your skin from sun
damage, which could eventually
lead to skin cancer.
Summer Family Travel By: Emiliano Pucio
School's out and workloads are lighter, making summer a prime season for family travel. Where your clan
decides to go, depends on factors like great weather, kid-friendly accommodations, dining and lodging options.
Use this Top 4-list to jump start your vacation planning.
Honolulu - Oahu: Oahu can be both fun and educational, featuring museums, historic sites and beaches.
Yellowstone: The country's oldest national park never fails to impress visitors of all ages with its unique
features
Orlando - Walt Disney World: Summer is always a popular time to visit Walt Disney World — school's out
and the weather is warm and sunny.
San Diego: the 1,200-acre Balboa Park (home to the famous San Diego Zoo) is a great place to let kids
burn off energy.
