The 33rd edition of the KCB Guru Nanak Rally is set. The prestigious event, first staged in 1973 and won by Vic Pres-

ton Sr/Bill Parkinson in a Mercedes Benz 250, is set to culminate the eight-leg 2012 KCB Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) series.

Clerk of the course Surinder That-thi set up a technical route in the ter-ritory which is synonymous with the days of WRC Safari Rally.

This year’s Guru Nanak will fea-ture seven competitive stages. CS1 will be a 33kilometer stage preceding the 57kilometer “endurance-test” section which Surinder describes as

“very rough and rocky”. This will be followed by the 1ki-

lometer super special and onward into service at Namuchunga n. After service-out, cars will tackle a 28ki-lometer stage before repeating the super special twice and the 33kilo-meter section.

This year’s Guru Nanak will fea-ture a total of 351kilometers of which 153km is competitive.

Guru Nanak, an event orga-nized by the Kenyan Sikh commu-nity, promises to be a thrilling event with Tundo, Duncan and Cavenagh battling for each second on every stage. n

Carl “Flash” Tundo Emerged Victorious in KCB Advantage Banking Rally in Nanyuki

Carl “Flash” Tundo navigated by Tim Jessop in Mitsubishi EVO9 emerged victori-ous in the KCB Advantage

Banking Rally in Nanyuki follow-ing cancellation of the last stage (CS11) at Batian View. Following heavy afternoon downpour, Clerk of the Course, Nazir Yakub in con-sultation with stewards ended pro-ceedings at penultimate stage with only 5 kilometers of super spe-cial to spare. As heavens opened, Tundo savoured his second career Nanyuki Rally victory after winning this event in 2005 in a Subaru N10.This was his first Nanyuki victory in the Mitsubishi. He beat teammate Alastair Cavenagh by a mere 22 sec-onds to claim his fourth win of the 2012 KNRC season.” The rally was really good. I have won Nanyuki for the first time in my Mitsubishi,” said Tundo.

Tundo has so far won the season opening Nyeri rally, Nakuru Rally, the Safari and now Nanyuki. He now opens a 75 point championship lead from Duncan who retired on day two but still maintained second position on 280points. Alastair’s second in Nanyuki saw him cling to third in the KNRC tussle with 250.

Third was Baldev Chager whose Subaru was losing power amidst his spirited fight. Quentin Mitchell came home fourth in a Subaru N16.

With Tundo and Cavenagh untouchable, Quentin spent the whole day fighting with Chager for a podium slot which he eventually lost.

Day 1 overnight leader Raaji Bharij finished 11th after he went off at some point and lost 6 minutes.

A tense showdown was mani-fest going into the last section of the rally. In fact, It was down to 22seconds between Tundo and Cavanagh but when skies opened, Tundo was declared the winner.Alastair had his run on the Loldaiga section frustrated when he drove the last 13kilometers on a puncture and lost 6 seconds to Tundo. Azar Anwar finished 6th overall behind the Mitsubishi EVO9 of Jassi Cha-the from Kisumu. The Nanyuki Rally had a number of casualties. Peter Horsey retired after the engine of his “Moto Moto” Datsun pick up failed.Issa Amwari was time barred in service. Other casualties were Patrick Kibaara, Jonathan Somen, Jeff Mburu and Munir Khan. Hard-eep Rehsi rolled on CS6. n

Great Rift Valley farmer Carl “Flash” Tundo racked up his third ca-reer Kenya National Rally Championship

title following victory in the KCB Asset Finance Rally in Eldoret.

He clocked 1.05.09hours beat legendary Ian Duncan by a 45 sec-onds margin as 2008 Champion Baldev Chager sealed the podium dash in 1.08.10hours. This was inci-dentally Tundo third career win in Eldoret after emerging victorious here previously in 2009 and 2010.

Tundo also savored his fifth win of the 2012 KNRC season af-ter emerging victorious in Nyeri, Nakuru, Safari Rally and Nanyuki in August.

He had his campaign effective-ly sewn up when his Dalbit Petro-leum teammate Alastair Cavenagh retired at CS3 end while leading the Rally. Cavenagh damaged his car’s sump guard and kissed the event goodbye.

Tundo was all smiles: “I’m very happy to win the Championship and the (Eldoret) Rally. There is now one more feat this weekend and this is to get my new born baby.”

After the stellar performance Tundo sung praises of his naviga-tor Tim Jessop who incidentally chalked up his fourth KNRC title.

“Tim has been brilliant all sea-son. I hope the youngsters will now bring in good competition next year,” added Tundo.

With fast paced Cavenagh gone, Duncan and Tundo engaged in breathtaking exchange. Cav-enagh won the first two stages, Duncan the third and Tundo the last one.

Dennis Mwenda won the 2WD Class while Aslam Khan won the Classic Car Cup.

The early morning 59kilome-

ter CS1 stage was cancelled at the request of top drivers who cited safety concerns on the long stretch.

There was a blockage by a track as well as lots of traffic which prompted organizers to cancel the stage. Casualties were Alastair (sump guard) end of CS3, Fahd Bary broke engine mountings, Ra-diator on CS3), Caroline Gatimu end of CS3, Sammy Nyorri, Issa Amwari and Mahesh Halai who retired in second service. n
