COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 41, NO. 52 FRIDAY DECEMBER 31, 2010 he successful sale of the outstanding life- long collection of Richard and Joane Smith was held on October 30, 2010, at Pook & Pook, Inc., in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Turn out was strong as veteran collectors, dealers and museums lined up to bid on the exceptional pieces of painted furniture and accessories, carvings, fraktur, textiles, baskets and pottery. The Smith’s were known for their scholarship, historic commu- nity involvement and impeccable taste. Their eye for quality was evident in each of the wonderful items offered at the auction. Many of the registered bidders were excited to see the famous “Detuk” schrank. This highly important Berks C o u n t y , Pennsylvania, painted schrank was inscribed “17 Philip Detuk 75”. The exceptional small size and vibrant origi- nal decorated surface intrigued many potential own- ers. After very active bidding on the phone and in the showroom, the piece brought an outstanding price of $818,500. A variety of local carvings, primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries, were offered. Richard Smith worked with the Machmers on the source book Just for Nice which docu- mented Pennsylvania German folk art woodcarving and carvers. Two carved and painted horse figures by the well known carver Peter Brubaker of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, sold to the phone for $20,145 and $26,070 to the same buyer. Two carv- ings by the Deco- Tex artist attracted active bidding. They brought $28,440 and $21,330 respectively. The Smiths had a wonderful eye for those little small “gems” in many catagories of Pennsylvania decorative arts including redware, stoneware, painted boxes, fraktur and baskets. The first lot of the sale was an attractive dome lid box retaining an unusual dec- oration of tulip petals and pin- wheels on a brilliant blue back- ground. This piece by the “Compass Artist” sold for $33,180. A rare slide lid box by the same artist soared to $54,510, bought by a Lancaster County dealer and collector. Another decorated box made by Jacob Weber for his great-granddaugh- ter Elisabeth Mosser was an important piece with stylized flowers and landscape with house and trees on a dark blue ground. After active bidding it sold for $45,030. A sim- ilar box by Jonas Weber with a yellow ground achieved $35,550. A myriad of small vivid wallpaper boxes in fine condition were offered. The prices ranged from $562 to $6,517. A Pennsylvania minia- ture blanket chest dated 1786 with ivory tulip design was a charming piece. Originally from the George Scott sale, it did well at $20,145. An unusual, possibly unique chalkware fig- ural group of a fire- man and his wife with original red, yellow and black decora- tion soared t o $16,590 and was bought by a l o c a l Philadelphia collector. Pennsylvania redware, especially figural examples, was central to the Smith’s collection. An exciting covered sugar bowl attributed to Henry Grady of Somerset County stood out with its polychrome dec- orated surface of stars, dots and pinwheels, bringing a strong price of $59,250. A Diehl Pottery, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, redware plate dated 1850 with a bird and floral sprig decoration rose well above the high estimate of $10,000 to bring $37,920. Another by the same pottery with a striking tulip brought $33,180. Important red- ware figures included a sander in the form of a seated man with dog for $35,550, a large dog with a basket in its mouth for $28,440, a dog with a whiskey jug for $15,405 and a lion with orange and green glaze for $13,045. A fine sgraffito plate attributed to Conrad Mumbouer and in excellent condition went over the high estimate to reach $52,140. An impressive John Bell har- vest jug inscribed “Waynesboro PA May 12th 1860” and stamped “John Bell” garnered much attention. With very active phone and floor bidding, it finally sold to a Pennsylvania col- lector for $59,250. Other pieces of stoneware fared well including a small Pennsylvania pitcher dated 1873 for $8,887, a Cowden & Wilcox pitcher with the unusual “man in the moon” decoration for $14,220 and an Ohio watercooler with braided handles for $7,110. A very attractive fraktur book- plate depicting a mermaid made $14,220. and a colorful Dauphin County fraktur by Christian Mertel with unicorns brought $23,700. Illustrations by N. C.Wyeth of the Civil War,depicting battles, soldiers, and civilians, as well as por-traits of Abraham Lincoln, will be on view in “Romancein Conflict: N. C. Wyeth’sCivil War Paintings” at theBrandywine River Museumin Chadds Ford,Pennsylvania, from January22 through March 20, 2011.

As the 50th anniversary ofthe Civil War approached in1911, public interest in thewar and its aftermathincreased dramatically.Biographies, novels, eye-wit-ness accounts and books andarticles analyzing battles andstrategies were publishedthroughout the United States.

Illustrators were as necessaryas authors to this publishingfrenzy.

N. C. Wyeth’s (1882-1945) first Civil Warimages appeared in 1906.From then until the endof his career, Wyeth wascommissioned to paintCivil War subjects asillustrations, murals andeven calendar pictures.Despite their differentuses, these images pre-sented the war - battles, soldiers and civilians - ina romantic, heroic man-ner which reflected anational desire to focuson duty, loyalty and brav-ery. “Romance inConflict: N. C. Wyeth’sCivil War Paintings”examines how Wyethprepared for these commis-

sions and how, some-times creating a pictureat odds with its text, heportrayed the war as acourageous struggle andthe combatants as noblewarriors.

The exhibitionincludes illustrationscreated for The LongRoll (1910), an epicnovel of the war. Thesepictures depictedabstract rather than spe-cific subjects - TheBattle, The Spy and TheGeneral - hoping peoplewould recognize in them“first the tragedy of war”and only afterward thenarrative element. Thesethree paintings andextensive backgroundinformation are includedin the exhibition.

Wyeth depicted AbrahamLincoln many times duringhis career, and visitors will

find in the exhibition the firstand last of such portraits. Theexhibition also includes pre-liminary paintings for twomurals Wyeth executed in1920 for the Missouri StateCapitol building.

“Romance in Conflict: N.C. Wyeth’s Civil WarPaintings” is drawn from pri-vate and public collections, and also includes a selectionof the props and referencematerials Wyeth used to cre-ate the pictures.

Also on view will beIllustrations of the Civil War,

featuring many fine examplesfrom the museum’s collec-tions. Among featured worksare many of WinslowHomer’s wood engravingspublished in Harper’s Weeklyand an unpublished pencilsketch he made at the front inVirginia. Other works, suchas paintings of wartime spiesby Howard Pyle, an Antietambattle scene by AlonzoChappel, and a war memorialby Harry Fenn, will be onview.

Exhibiting American artin a 19th-century grist mill,

the Brandywine RiverMuseum is internationallyknown for its unparalleledcollection of works by threegenerations of Wyeths and itsfine collection of Americanillustration, still life and land-scape painting.

The Brandywine RiverMuseum is located on U.S.Route 1 in Chadds Ford,Pennsylvania. Dear Joe:I have a set of six plates

that were my mother’s andprior to that my great aunt’s.They are essentiallyunmarked with one having acut in “Z” and another a “V”indent. They are beautifuland I have looked everywherefor anything like them andhave found nothing. Eachplate has hand painted scenesof flowers, birds and insects. They are scalloped and 9inches in diameter. Any helpwould be appreciated.

Sincerely,J. T. S.Dear J. T. S.:The ubiquitous term “pot-

tery” applies to any productmade of clay - and that wouldinclude these lovely plates. However, underneath thatnonspecific umbrella term, anitem made from clay can beearthenware, stoneware, orporcelain - which in turn maybe either hard or soft pasteporcelain.

Looking at the pho-tographs, I believe these par-ticular plates are probablyporcelain - and probably ofthe Chinese hard paste vari-ety. Since I cannot see themin person, let me suggestsome ways that J. T. S. cantell whether or not these areindeed hard paste porcelain.

First of all, the platesshould be translucent - mean-ing that if held to a stronglight, the light will showthrough. However, this is nota 100 percent true indicationof porcelain because someporcelain pieces are so thick-ly potted that light will notshow through. I should alsomention that, to the Chinese, who invented this stuff, translucency was not impor-tant and their porcelain piecesoften were not translucent.

The second clue is thathard past porcelain is so hard

that it cannot be scratchedwith a steel knife. To testthis, J. T. S. might find anunglazed spot - probably onthe foot rim - and try scratch-ing it with a knife. The prob-ability is that the knife willnot scratch it and may leavea gray streak where a smallamount of steel was deposited.

Porcelain is sometimescalled “China” after the placeof its invention more than onethousand years ago (no one isexactly sure when this actual-ly happened). This very spe-cial material is principallymade from two essentialingredients that are correctlycalled “petuntse” and“kaolin.” The English sim-

plified these terms callingthem “china stone” and

“china clay” respectively. No European knew how

to make porcelain until theearly 18th century, whenalchemist Johann Bottger -who was literally the prisonerof Augustus the Strong, Kingof Poland and Elector ofSaxony - who stumbled ontothe secret in 1709. The dis-covery was made in Dresden, but Bottger and his formulawere moved down the roadabout 14 miles to Meissenwhere the secret could beclosely held and a factory setup.

Meanwhile, all overEurope, people were trying todiscover the secret of truehard paste porcelain without

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERTThis Week: Some Predictions For The Future

Peter Swift Seibert

As the year draws to aclose, I wanted to offer mypredictions on where thetrade will be in 2011. Myview this year, looking intomy crystal ball with my rab-bit’s foot held high, is thatwe will see a much betteryear than 2010.

However, I see realchanges and substanceappearing on the horizon. Two colleagues reported tome that their auctions werethe strongest in severalyears. Both noted that theretail buyers were back andspending money freely. Mysense is that this is going tobe a slow trend, beginningat auctions, and transferringto the retail market. Why?Because there is too muchpent up spending energy outthere. Political pundits aretalking about howAmericans are learning tosave more from this crisis.

Granted, that may be truebut when people becomemore comfortable with theirsituation then they willbegin to spend again.

Interestingly, the marketthat seems to have beenstrong out there was themiddle market! Okay, nowthat is a stretch to believesince for more than twentyyears the prognosticatorshave been announcing thedeath of the middle market.I used to buy that but thenrealized that if the middlemarket was truly dead, thenwho was supporting theauctions and dealers!!!Oops... a big question markthere. I say the middle mar-ket is alive and well butbeing careful with their pur-chases. Therein lies the dif-ference, they are buying butpicking their choices muchmore carefully than before. The focused collectors of agiven area will always pur-sue their passion with asmuch abandon as their wal-let will allow. The generalcollectors and decoratorsare the ones who are farmore fickle. They will buybut only a certain look with-in a certain price point.

My guess is thatthey will be back inthe next year, albeitmore carefully thanbefore.

The other inter-esting trend that Inoticed in talkingto the auctioneerswas that their topitems were going tobig antique dealerswho were stockingup for the winterand spring showsin 2011. That tellsme that they sensea need to have newand fresh becausethe market willhave returned by

then. I like thesound of that andthink that this aharbinger ofthings to comeacross the trade. The full-timedealers are expect-ing a recovery andare beginning torebuild theirstocks so that theycan hit it hard nextyear.

Finally, oneother aspect of itall that I think isworthy of note isthat the crisis hasreset pricing onmany items back

to a more manageable level. We are seeing areas that hadgotten overheated with yup-pie decorator money nowreturning to a manageablelevel with the end resultbeing that attracting newcollectors will be far easierthan in the past.

So my long view is that2011 will be about releasingpent up energy among con-sumers with the end resultbeing that the market willheat up, and while therecovery will be slow, itwill be apparent by the endof the year.

Next week will be myguesses on what to buy inthe coming year...

Fully aware that Bertoia’sauction series featuring thelate Donald Kaufman’s toycollection was nearing its con-clusion, bidders were on pointand eager to stake their claimsat semiannual sale Number 4,held September 24 and 25 atthe company’s Vineland, NewJersey, gallery.

“Everyone knew it was thelast multiple-day Kaufmansale to be held, but for some,last-minute contingency planshad to be made before theycould bid. It’s a good thing theEuropean collectors havebecome resilient to all naturaldisasters,” Bertoia Auctionsassociate Rich Bertoia said

with a laugh. “Last spring, right before thethird Kaufman sale, they had to deal withwidespread flight can-cellations due to thevolcanic eruption inIceland. This time itwas the ill-timedFrench airline strikethat put a damper onmany people’s travelplans.”

But it takes a lot tocome between a col-lector and the types ofrare toys DonKaufman favored,Bertoia said. “Theyjust shifted gears andmade arrangements tobid by phone or theInternet. It remindedme of the movieAgainst All Odds. Ithad a happy ending.”

The fourth sale ofthe series, which con-tained automotive andcomic character toysfrom a storied collec-tion built over 60 yearsby the co-founder ofKB Toys, grossed $1.6million (inclusive of15 percent buyer’s pre-mium), pushing thecumulative total so farto $10.9 million. Thetop lot of the sale wasa circa-1925 American

National deluxe coupe pedal car withnickel-plated grille, electric head-lights and an opening rear trunk.Against an estimate of $30,000 to$35,000, it realized $46,000.

Throughout the auction series, there has been no shortage of interestin early pressed-steel vehicles. Inaddition to the top lot, September’shighlights included a circa-1927Toledo Buick, 30 1/2 inches long andwith a prototype bumper designed toabsorb shock with a spring reinforce-ment. “This toy was never intendedfor play, and it was an exceptionalexample,” Bertoia said. Estimated at$15,000 to $20,000, it rumbled off toa new owner for $34,500.

Cast-iron toys also made a strongstatement about their popularity, withthe top lot of that particular category- a 1930’s Kenton Morgan toy cranewith collapsible trestle frame - selling

for $20,700. It had been entered in the salewith a $2,500 to$3,500 estimate.

Another popularcast-iron piece wasthe circa - 1930’sHubley “TrukMixer” with redMack cab and elabo-rate frame designincorporating a greenrevolving cementdrum. The 7 1/2-inchtoy easily surpassedits $5,000 to $6,000estimate to settle at$9,775.

The demand fortop-tier European tinautomotive toys wasquite evident by suchprices realized as$18,400 for a 15 1/2-

inch, circa - 1910Gunthermann torpe-do-style touring car;and $10,350 for a 19-inch Paya (Spain)Bugatti clockworkracer with driver andspoke wheels.

Leading theparade of Americancomic characterentries, Louis Marx &Co.’s 9 1/2-inch-longPopeye and Olive OylJiggers, in excellentto pristine conditionwith original box,

WAYNE STEELE - AU3916L

Teddy Roosevelt, the 26thPresident of the United Stateswas by many accounts one ofthe greatest ever to hold theoffice. He was also the headof the Bull Moose Party, andhad he been present at theJulia Firearms Auction onTuesday, October 5, he wouldsurely have used his favoriteexclamation “Bully!” whenhis personal gold inlaid FoxShotgun sold for a worldrecord $862,500.Roosevelt was anavid Conservationistand indeed it’sbecause of his actions andefforts that many species ofwater fowl and animals weresaved from extinction.Roosevelt was also an avidhunter. In 1909, at the end ofhis Presidency, he was plan-ning what would eventuallybecome the most famous ofall African safaris to ever takeplace. His son Kermit wouldaccompany him, and prior toleaving on the safari, thePresident of the Fox ShotgunCompany had made a specialF grade, goldinlaid, 12-g a u g ed o u -

s h o t g u n ,which wasinscribed, “Made

especially for TheHon. Theodore Roosevelt.”Roosevelt was thrilled withthe gun, and upon receivingit, he wrotea thank younote to thePresident ofthe FoxG u n

Company stat-ing, “I reallythink it’s the

most beautiful gun I’ve everseen. I am exceedingly proudof it.” In another letter hestated to Mr. Fox, “It is sobeautiful that I take pleasurein just looking at it. I shallkeep it as long as I live, andwhen I die, it shall go to myson Kermit…” And indeedt h eshotgundid.

After Kermit’sdeath, it waspassed on to his

son Kermit, Jr. Butin 1974, the family made thedecision to sell the gun, and a

renowned Fox Shotgun col-lector eventually acquired it.He kept it for some years andlater sold it to another privatecollector who was an avidadmirer of Roosevelt.Recently the collector, aretired businessman, madethe decision to dispose of thegun and the Julia AuctionCompany, having distin-g u i s h e d

t h e m -s e l v e s

over the years as theleading seller of high-grade shotguns in the worldtoday, was selected to handlethe sale. Julia’s touted the gunas the most valuable and mosthistoric American shotgunever made, and indeed it was!The gun, the man, and thehistory of the gun make thisone of the most historicAmerican shotguns known toexist, and the final priceunquestionably establishedthat fact. It was the most

e x p e n s i v eAmerican shotgun

ever made. In fact,

at $862,500, it isthe 2nd highest

price ever attainedfor any firearm at auction inhistory, and of course is themost expensive American orEuropean shotgun to be soldat auction. (The world recordfor the most expensivefirearm ever sold at auction isthe Colt Walker sold inOctober of 2008 by Julia’s for

lion dollars.)

Just as this release wasbeing prepared, Julia’slearned of a wonderful post-script to the sale of theRoosevelt shotgun. The newowner, a passionate youngand serious collector of his-torical arms is currentlyexploring the possibilities of

a temporary loan and exhibi-tion of his new prize at vari-ous firearms oriented muse-ums in North America. If heis successful, his great gen-erosity will provide the

opportunity for the most his-toric and valuable Americanshotgun ever to be sharedwith a vast array of gunenthusiasts. In the words ofJim Julia, “This is a trulynoble and generous gesturebefitting Roosevelt’s charac-ter and the kind of man hewas.”

The shotgun however,w a s

not the only success story ofthis $10 million plus auction.Session I, Tuesday, October5, began with Class IIIweapons. Included in theClass III offering was the col-

lection of the late A. WilliamVallerand. Bill was not only acollector of Class III, but wasa dealer. In fact, he was thefirst federally licensed dealerin the state of Maine. Whenhe first applied for hislicense, the Attorney Generalof Maine denied his licenserequest and claimed he would

not allow any machine gundealers in the state. Bill how-ever, contacted a long timefamily friend, SenatorMargaret Chase Smith whoseofficial letter set thingsstraight. In a short period oftime, he had his license.Included in the sale fromBill’s collection was a NorthKorean AK-47, estimated at$15,000 to $25,000, and wentout at $28,750. Also anFN/C.A.L. marked 1957 wasestimated at $14,000 to$18,000, that went out at$17,250. His BREN, estimat-ed at $25,000 to $30,000went out at $27,600, and hisWWII MG-42 made by Styer, estimated at $20,000 to$25,000, and sold for$23,000.

In addition to the

Vallerand collection, therewere other Class III weapons. One of the most interestingwas the near mint Ithaca Auto& Burglar Shotgun with fac-tory holster. In outstandingcondition, it carried a presaleestimate $3,500 to $4,500,but saw a tremendous amount

AUCTION SALE BILLS

JULIA’S AUCTION

a conservative presale esti-mate of $50,000 to $100,000and went out at $57,500 in apost-auction sale.

One of the most beautifulguns in the sale had to be thespectacular gold encrustedDaniel Frasersidelock ejectorbig game doublerifle in caliber600 Nitro. Thegun was anincredible workof art withsculptured gamescenes on thebarrels andbreech. It wasalso embellishedwith extraordi-nary gold inlaysdepicting vari-ous species ofdangerous game. The gun sawconsiderable competition andwent out at $132,250.

Near the end of the firstday, a remarkable offering ofMarlin Rifles were offered, all of which came from theesteemed collection of thelate Richard Rohal. A walkingencyclopedia on Marlins,Rohal was a passionate col-lector and spent his lifetimeamassing what was unques-tionably one of finest smallbore collection of Marlinsfirearms ever assembled.Three of the prizes of his col-lection were referred to as theBlue Book Guns as they wereprominently featured in coloron the cover of the 28th edi-tion of the Blue Book of GunValues. Each of the guns wereworks of art and in outstand-ing condition having fabulous#10 engraving and exquisitegold inlay. They included aMarlin Model 20 pump actionrifle from Mahon Marlinestate, a Model 38 pump-action, and a Model 27Spump-action. Carrying a pre-sale estimate of $62,500 to$102,500, the trio sold for

$112,125. Another prize inthe Rohal collection was anengraved and gold inlaidModel 20 pump action rifle in.22 caliber. Estimated at$10,000 to $15,000, it wentout at $41,975.

Session II also proved tobe a “Bully” sale. One of thefirst lots of the session was an

extraordinarily rare andexceptional Winchester 1stModel 1873 “One of OneHundred” lever action rifle.Perhaps the finest conditionOne of One Hundred (or 1 of1,000 for that matter) in exis-tence. The gun had been inprivate hands until it wasplaced on loan at the CodyMuseum in the 1990’s, andpreviously was essentiallyunknown. The wood and themetal were in extraordinarycondition, so much so, peoplewere amazed at its condition. And never having seen a newModel 73, they had a hard

time believing it could possi-bly be this good. An extrascrew hole on the backside ofthe breech helped to explainthe extraordinary condition ofthe gun, for at one time it hadbeen mounted in a specialdisplay case by this screwhole where the gun had beenprotected from handling and

the ravages oftime. It’s unlikelythat one wouldever find anexample to rivalthis Model 73,which carried apresale estimateof $225,000 to$325,000. Theoriginal owner, now a widow, traveled a greatdistance to bepresent for thesale of the gun,and was ecstatic

at the $373,750 it ultimatelyrealized. Immediately afterthis remarkable gun was

another extraordinaryWinchester, a very earlyHenry 1860 lever action riflein extremely fine condition. In fact, it was one of the finestthe Julia firm has ever han-dled. It came from the collec-tion of the late David Crockerof Easley, South Carolina.Mr. Crocker was a passionatecollector with a taste for qual-ity Winchesters and Colts. The gun carried a presale esti-mate of $75,000 to $125,000and went out at $138,000. Anoutstanding Conrad Ulrich

Engraved and gold platedModel 66 lever rifle inextremely fine condition wasanother prize from theCrocker collection. Estimatedfor $50,000 to $100,000, itsold for just under $110,000.Another desirable Winchesterfrom the Crocker collectionwas a rare and importantcased Nimschke engravedModel 66 with ivory stockand originally presented tothe President of Peru. It wasestimated at $35,000 to$50,000, and sold for$60,375.

In the late 1870’s Buffalohunting was a major endeavorin the west, and the SharpsRifle became recognized asone of the finest Buffalo hunt-ing rifles on the market.Offered in this sale was a veryrare and special Sharps Rifleknown as a desirable Freund“Boss Gun” Sharps Model1874. In the late 1870’s, theFreund Brothers acquired var-ious Sharps and altered them

to make them a more efficientand accurate long-range rifle.Only a few of these prizesexist today. This one in verygood condition carried a pre-sale estimate of $90,000 to$125,000, and sold for$103,500.

Mr. Crocker was also agreat admirer of Coltfirearms. There were a num-ber of Colts in his collectionincluding a minty engravedSAA with Texas history. Itwas estimated at $20,000 to$30,000, but after a biddingbattle, it sold at over twice thehigh estimate for $66,000.Another outstanding CrockerColt was a minty engravedSAA with the originalowner’s initials engraved onthe mother of pearl grips. Thegun was estimated at $30,000to $50,000 and sold for justover $43,000.

Extraordinary cased engraved Special Colt Model 1860army percussion revolver with extremely rare ebony grips, engraved by Gustave Young in the style of engraving foundon General Grant’s Colt, sword, sash, and book estimatedfor $135,000 to $165,000 sold for $149,500.
