COMPLIMENTARY COPY Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 44, NO. 16 FRIDAY APRIL 19, 2013 By Donald-Brian Johnson “Get out those old records, Those old phonograph records, The ones we used to play so long ago. What if they sound scratchy? The tunes, they really were catchy Remember when you used to love them so?” Carmen Lombardo, 1951 uick, now: what’s the last Broadway tune you can recall that propelled itself up the pop music charts? Was it Judy Collins’ plaintive “Send in the Clowns” (“A Little Night Music”)? Barbra Streisand’s soulful “People” (“Funny Girl”)? Maybe it was The 5th Dimension’s rousing “Aquarius”/”Let the Sunshine In” (“Hair”), or perhaps Louis Armstrong, cheerfully growling out “Hello, Dolly!” (guess what show that’s from). Nowadays, you won’t find Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and the rest of the chart-toppers peppering their releases with Broadway ballads. They know what sells, and show tunes aren’t what fans are clamoring for. Of course, there are occasional anomalies. Susan Boyle enters a TV talent contest. Her angelic “I Dreamed a Dream” (from “Les Miserables”) bowls over the judges; in true duckling-into-swan fashion, Susan becomes an overnight sensation. Anne Hathaway goes for a grittier “Dream” in the film version, racking up awards and stand- ing ovations (Hey - when’s the last time you saw that in a movie theater?). Their well-deserved accolades prove news- worthy simply because the events themselves - folks singing show tunes, making the world sit up and take notice - seem such oddities. Things like that just don’t happen every day. But, once upon a time, they did. “Say It With Music” “People Will Say We’re in Love”. . . “76 Trombones”. . . “The Impossible Dream”. . . “Tomorrow”. . .”I Could Have Danced All Night”. . . You may never have seen a Broadway musical in your life. You may have a tin ear. A voice like a frog. But, there’s no denying it: you know these songs. You know them because, for decades, these showstoppers, and countless more like them, were what popular music was all about. Nowadays, we call them “the standards.” They were popularized by big bands, belted out on the radio, and given the Hollywood treatment. Bing, Frank, and Perry sang them. So did Judy, Doris, and Dinah. For entertainers of the mid-twentieth century, Broadway was an inexhaustible gold mine. Performers gave their unique “takes” on show tunes, and we happily listened to the results. On records. “Records.” There’s a quaint old-timeyness to the word, as much of the past as spats and buggy whips. But almost until the millennium, when CDs and other digital storage media made them passé, records ruled. “LPs,” (and their even mustier predecessors, the “78s”), were how America got its music. If you wanted to hear the latest hit song, there was no downloading. You bought the record and switched on the hi-fi. And, if you wanted to hear the latest Broadway hit songs, “just as performed on the New York stage,” you bought the “original cast album.” “Give My Regards To Broadway” The earliest cast albums were recorded in England, and were, oddly enough, of American shows with their London casts (“Show Boat,” in 1928, was one of the first). Until the introduction of the LP (“long play”) record in 1948, record- ing a show was an unwieldy process. A 78-rpm disc could only hold between 3-1/2 and 4-1/2 minutes of music per side. Recording a show’s entire score would have required many more 78s than the 5 or 6 that could conveniently be packaged in a set. Less notable songs went unrecorded (or, at any rate, unreleased). Features considered nonessential, such as overtures, instrumental breaks, and verses, were truncated, or eliminated. And, while leading performers were usually called upon to repeat their stage successes for listening posterity, the chorus and orchestra were often just assembled for the recording, and had no connection to the stage presentation. In 1943, Decca released the first recording that could truly be billed as featuring the “original Broadway cast”: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” As before, the leads were the Broadway originals - but so were the chorus, the orchestra, and even the conductor. Issued as a set of 78s, “Oklahoma!” sold over one million copies. If you saw the show and loved it, reliv- ing the musical thrills was now as close as your record player. (And if you couldn’t get tickets, you could at least hear what everyone else was talking about!) The Broadway cast album was in its ascendency. . .and a new collecting trend was born. “There’s No Business Like Show Business” Soon, it seemed as if every show was being committed to record. The debut of the LP, with a playing time of 40 to 50 minutes, meant that more of a show’s score could be preserved, in approximately correct running order - all on one disc. There were the hits, such as “West Side Story,” “South Pacific,” and “My Fair Lady”; the semi-hits, such as 1960’s “Wildcat,” (its main selling point, TV’s “Lucy” (Lucille Ball), croaking her way through the bouncy “Hey, Look Me Over”); and lots and lots of no-hits-at-all, such as “I Had a Ball,” starring non-singing comic Buddy Hackett, and a musi- calization of “Gone With the Wind,” (known as “Scarlett” (Continued on page 2) Q The baby boomers’ TV favorite, “Peter Pan,” first thrilled audiences on Broadway. 1954, RCA. $15-20. For entertainers of themid-twentieth century, Broadway was an inexhaustiblegold mine. Performers gave their unique “takes” on showtunes, and we happily listened to the results. On records.

“Records.” There’s a quaint old-timeyness to theword, as much of the past as spats and buggy whips. Butalmost until the millennium, when CDs and other digital

storage media made them passé, records ruled. “LPs,”(and their even mustier predecessors, the “78s”), were howAmerica got its music. If you wanted to hear the latest hitsong, there was no downloading. You bought the record andswitched on the hi-fi. And, if you wanted to hear the latestBroadway hit songs, “just as performed on the New Yorkstage,” you bought the “original cast album.”

“Give My Regards To Broadway”The earliest cast albums were recorded in England, and

were, oddly enough, of American shows with their Londoncasts (“Show Boat,” in 1928, was one of the first). Until theintroduction of the LP (“long play”) record in 1948, record-ing a show was an unwieldy process. A 78-rpm disc couldonly hold between 3-1/2 and 4-1/2 minutes of music perside. Soon, it seemed as if every show was being committed

to record. The debut of the LP, with a playing timeof 40 to 50 minutes, meant that more of a show’s

score could be preserved, in approximately correctrunning order - all on one disc. giving the semblance of an in-person interview. (Ask thewrong question, and the

exemplify what constitutesthe Broadway musical col-lecting field. The determinedcast album collector wants toacquire every variation. Why?Because they’re out there.

“Another Op’ni’n,Another Show”

When the CD made itsappearance in the 1980s,musical fans were overjoyed.Approximately 80 minutes of

a new show’s score, (evenmore on double-disc sets),could now be immortalized.Dialogue intros, instrumentalbreaks, and even “cut” num-bers created a comprehensive

theatrical experience. There were also re-issues of shows origi-nally released on 78s,(with missing numbersrestored), plus re-issuesof older, lesser-knownproductions, previouslyavailable only on hard-to-find, pricey LPs.

Even in their tinyboxes, Broadway musi-cal CDs retain a senseof tradition. Littlebooklets filled withshow photos, originalart, anecdotes, and songlyrics are tucked inside. It may take a magnify-ing glass, but reading a

CD insert is almost as satisfy-ing as reading the liner noteson the back cover of an LP.Almost.

As with every collectingfield, cast album collectorsoften broaden their horizonsby acquiring collateral mate-rials. There are promo record-ings, provided to radio sta-tions in hopes of receiving afree plug; pre-recordedresponse tracks by the show’sstars were played after theDJ’s scripted “live” questions,

when it had its world pre-miere in Japan), completewith an onstage burning ofAtlanta.

Although using the “orig-inal cast” was now the norm, there were occasional slip-ups. In 1950, RCA acquiredthe rights to record “Call MeMadam,” but star EthelMerman was under contractto Decca. RCA went aheadand recorded an “originalcast” album anyway, withDinah Shore taking Ethel’srole. Ethel delivered her ownDecca release, a studio castfilling in for her Broadway

colleagues. Neither cobbled-together version sold well.

“Hooray for Hollywood”Scores of movie musicals

were also recorded, butthere’s an important distinc-tion. “Original cast” albumsrefer to recordings made of astage presentation, generallyrecorded in a studio, soonafter a production’s opening. The goal: to create an accu-rate representation of whatwould be heard in the theater, minus glitches, and, in mostcases, audience response.

An “original Broadwaycast album” means that theshow played on the GreatWhite Way, with substantiallythe same personnel as heardon the recording. A “studiocast” recording indicates per-formers have simply beenselected for the recording ses-sion, with no inherent attach-ment to a specific production. And, if you write a musicalthat makes its debut in

Hoboken and are luckyenough to have it recordedthere, you’ll certainly windup with an “original castalbum”. . .just not an originalBroadway cast album.

A movie recording is asoundtrack, its selectionstaken from tracks pre-record-ed for the film. Although thegoal is to present what audi-ences have seen and heard onthe screen, there are excep-tions. Sometimes, pre-record-ed songs are edited, or cutentirely before a movie opens, due to time limitations or artis-tic considerations. You canwatch “Meet Me in St. Louis”over and over, but you’ll neversee Judy Garland sing “Boysand Girls Like You and Me,”although it’s on the album.

“My Favorite Things”Make no mistake about it:

during the 1950s and ‘60s,Broadway cast albums werevery, very popular. Just thumbthrough the records on offer atnearly every garage sale.Chances are, you’ll find well-played copies of such pastBroadway blockbusters as“The Music Man,” “My FairLady,” and “Funny Girl.”Each reigned for a time in the#1 spot of Billboard’s list ofalbum best-sellers. And, whatwould a collection of cast

albums be without “TheSound of Music?” In 1960,the Mary Martin-led stagerecording, decked out with a“deluxe gatefold jacket,”spent 16 weeks at #1. (1965’smovie soundtrack recording, starring Julie Andrews, dideven better: to date, it’s soldover ten million copies.)

“The Sound of Music” is agood case in point for puz-zling out just why folks col-lect Broadway cast albums.Since the show’s opening

night in 1959, over 60 differ-ent versions of “The Sound ofMusic’s” score have beenrecorded, including rendi-tions in Spanish, Italian,French, and German, plus theoriginal Brazilian cast vocal-izing “Do-Re-Mi” inPortuguese. There’s even aspecialty release featuring theTrapp Family Singers, whosedramatic life story providedthe musical’s inspiration. Thedistinct subtleties of each“Sound of Music” recording

The Antiques Emporium, located at 29 Division St.,Somerville, N.J., is going outof business. Owners Ken andBonnie Reeder made the dif-ficult decision after being inbusiness 21 years, and theyare going to miss having thebusiness in their lives. Theshop has provided a lot of funand friendship, as well assomething new learned justabout every day aboutantiques and collectibles.

The Antiques Emporiumopened in October 1992 at 32Church St. in Flemington. When the landlord decided tosell his building in 1998, thebusiness relocated to 70 W.Main in Somerville. It lost itslease in 2004, and the ownerswere fortunate to find anewly renovated building at29 Division St., where theyhave enjoyed nine successfulyears. Eight dealers haveremained with AntiquesEmporium from its beginning

in Flemington. A family kindof feeling prevails among thedealers, and everyone willmiss each other as well as thedevoted customers. AntiquesEmporium thanks its cus-tomers for their loyalty andfriendship.

Some dealers are relocat-ing to other centers. Be sureto stop in over the next fewweeks to take advantage ofsome outstanding bargains.Large discounts are beingoffered, and new merchan-dise continues to come in, asdealers are hoping to move asmuch as possible.

The last day open will beMay 25. Please stop in forgood buys and goodbyes.

By Anita StratosDid you know that between

1920 and the 1940s, motionpicture studios in the U.S. hiredwell-known artists and illustra-tors to create eye-catchinglobby cards and movie posters? The object, of course, was forthe colorful, artistically-

designed advertisements toconvince the public that theyjust had to see that film.Tantalizing artwork was creat-ed by the likes of Al Hirschfeld,an extremely prolific artist whodesigned posters for CharlieChaplin’s and Marx Brothers’movies to multi-generationalclassics like “The Wizard ofOz.” Considering this, movieadvertisement pieces may beamong the most obvious yettaken-for-granted works of artoutside of a museum.

It’s easy to see why thereare plenty of movie posterreproductions and bootlegs cir-culating. The highest price paidfor a movie poster was in 2005,when the international versionof the original “Metropolis”poster sold for $690,000; thisposter is now being resold for$850,000. Other classic postersalso command six-figure pricetags, so it’s no wonder that I’ve

seen dozens upon dozens ofbootlegs and reproductions atauctions. Sometimes I’ll seehandfuls of the same poster orlobby card trickle into the sameauction house month aftermonth, and other times I’ll finda huge batch of 50 or so of theexact same poster in a singletray lot. But not all nonoriginalposters were made to deceive –there are legitimate reissues, reprints, and commercialposters that some resellers aremisrepresenting as originals(especially online), so you real-ly need to check the details ofthe poster before you buy, oronly buy from a known andtrusted seller who acceptsreturns.

First, it’s important todefine what an “original”movie poster is. Unlike mostother artwork, many “origi-nals” were made. An original

movie poster is considered tobe a studio-generated or studio-commissioned poster that wasused to promote a movie at thetime of its release.Unfortunately, it’s becomingmore and more difficult to rec-ognize reproductions andbootlegs because technologyhas advanced the quality ofprinting to such a high degree, especially with the use ofextremely high-resolutionscanners. And there’s the addedpotential confusion of licensedreprints, but these typically

have distinguishing characteris-tics and are not intended to mas-querade as originals.

One of the most commonsigns of a reproduction movieposter is its size. Yes, size mat-ters quite a bit in the wide worldof movie advertising, and areproduction with incorrectmeasurements can be an easygiveaway. Movie poster sizeschanged over the years, as didthe width of their white borders,so you need to know the year ofthe film and the measurementsused at that time. There are anumber of different types andsizes of movie posters, somemore common than others: halfsheet, one sheet, three sheet, sixsheet, twenty-four sheet, insert, banner, subway, half subway, and more. Each has its own sizeand characteristics, dependingon when it was issued.

Watch for overall size dif-ferences (sometimes by frac-tions of an inch, but it matters)as well as the measurements ofthe white edge borders. The lat-ter sometimes doesn’t match upwith known originals if it’s anauthorized reissue, but youshould be able to find the print

company’s identification, yearof reproduction, or other identi-fying mark along the edge ofthe poster. An unscrupulousseller will sometimes trim theedge to eliminate that mark andthen trim the rest of the edges sothe white frame is equal all theway around. Other times thereseller will get sloppy or forgetto trim the other edges, so raisethe flag of caution if you seeone edge narrower than theothers. You can find detailedspecs of various U.S. (andinternational) movie postersonline at Bloody Rare Posters(h t t p : / /www.b loodyra reposters.com/faq.php).

There are several ways torecognize a reproduction orbootleg poster without using aruler or needing a chart. There

(Continued from page 7)

Fooled By Fakes are what collectors call “mintywhites;” while desirable for aperson’s teeth, it’s a completelyundesirable feature in movieposters. Original movie postersare printed on acidic paper, which browns or “tans” overtime. On the other hand, repro-duction posters are printed onbrand-new stock, which typi-cally has a bright white color.Another visual clue to a repro-duction is fuzzy lettering on thecredits – this is lettering thatlacks sharp, clean edges andmay have extra ink drops scat-tered around the letters, whichyou can see with a 10x loupe. Ifthe poster has a small Unionmark at the bottom (found onolder posters), it should also besharp and clear. Also, look at aknown authentic poster andmake sure the alignment of alllettering, color tones, and othersuch details match exactly.

But what if the faker wassmart enough to use old cardstock? Unscrupulous sellershave been known to remove theimages from inexpensive oldlobby cards and then put a high-resolution scan of a pricey oneonto the old stock. In this case, you may be able to see the lay-ers if you examine the edges ofthe card closely. Unfortunately, this method of detection won’twork if the faker only replacedthe portion inside the border;you may need an expert’s opin-ion if you suspect the piece.

To throw a little confusioninto the mix – and what col-lectible doesn’t have confusingexceptions – most, but not allmovie posters were made bystudio-commissioned printers. But since the 1920s, some the-aters have hired their ownartists to create posters, window

cards, etc., and then had themprinted less expensively. Thesevariations are not fakes; they’relegitimate advertisements creat-ed by theaters at the time of afilm’s release. The printer maynot be one that’s highly recog-nizable, and since the postersweren’t made for distributionand most were disposed of

afterward, only a small numberof each may have survived.

Some sellers of bootlegsand reproductions have beenknown to set up entire websiteswhere they deliberately misrep-resent their fraudulent postersas authentic in order to sell theircheap knock-offs for highprices. Ten dollar bootlegs have

sold for hundreds of dollars onthese websites. These fraudstersconvincingly set themselves upas authorities and, unfortunate-ly, unsuspecting buyers whodon’t check on their reputationsthrough collecting forums andsuch will and do fall victim totheir schemes every day. Armyourself with information, andalways check with other experi-enced collectors before trustingunknown sources.

With movie posters, lobbycards, and any other film/the-ater advertising, details are thekey to authentication. Colors, measurements, and print clarityare just a few of the things buy-ers need to scrutinize beforeinvesting in a possible original.Movie poster collecting is asrewarding as it is challenging, and there’s much more to knowthan I can include here. Checkout the websites below to findmany more expert sources andlearn more about this fascinat-ing field.

AUCTION SALE BILLS

Morphy Auctions, Denver,Pa., will launch into spring withan April 19 and 20 auction ofapproximately 1,800 lots ofantique toys, banks, trains andmarbles from selective con-signors on both sides of theAtlantic. Both sessions will startat 9 a.m., with all forms of bid-ding available, including livevia the Internet through MorphyLive and Artfact.

Day one will open with anarray of pre- and postwarAmerican and European trains, led by an extremely rare Lionel#921 3-section Scenic ParkPlot. Made for standard-gaugetrains, the plot is dotted withhouses, trees and shrubs, and isimpressively sized. “It’s thelargest landscape item of itstype that Lionel ever made,”said Morphy Auctions’ ChiefOperating Officer, TommySage Jr.

Also in the mix are O-gaugetrains, including a contempo-rary English-made set, un-runwith original boxes; and twodesirable Lionel productions - a#253 passenger and a set com-prised of steam locomotive with

passenger cars. Additionally, the railroad grouping includesEnglish Hornby trains, GermanBing and Marklin trains andaccessories, and a late-19th-century Ingersoll live-steampassenger train set with originalwood box for the loco/tenderand cardboard boxes for thecars. Two other lots deservingof special attention are a boxed

Lionel Santa Handcar withoriginal box and a beautifulhand-painted Marklin CentralStation.

The toys chosen for theApril 19-20 auction exhibitboth rarity and superior condi-tion. Among the highlights ofthe German tin section are afine Lehmann “Walking DownBroadway” with dog, walkingcane and elusive original box;

and a Stock “Jim the TrolleyMan” in very rare store displaybox. Other top lots include anunusual German lithographedtin airplane tower toy and a 32-inch Bing ocean liner.

More than 100 pieces ofpressed steel will be offered, with many boxed vehicles bysought-after brands such asSmith-Miller, Tonka, Keystoneand Buddy ‘L.’Afew of the toplots include a scarce Buddy ‘L’3-piece Fire Department set inoriginal box and a Keystoneride-on Greyhound Bus. Buddy‘L’ outdoor railway sets, 40American and European pedalcars, and scores of other carsand work vehicles round outthe grouping.

Doing double duty, twooutstanding Retro pressed-steelFlash Gordon spacecraft tran-scend collecting genres andappeal to both space toy andpressed steel collectors. Oneexample is of silver steel and

depicts Gordon’s spaceship, while the other is a toy replicaof the destroyer employed byGordon’s archenemy EmperorMing the Merciless.

Comic character fans willhave their pick of great toys by

Marx and other quality brands, but Sage predicts all eyes willbe on Lot 380, a near-apoc-ryphal Gunthermann (German)tin wind-up Felix Carousel toy.An absolute charmer, it fea-tures Felix the Cat charactersriding automobiles and zep-pelins on the carousel while athree-dimensional Felix figureturns the crank to “activate”the toy. Felix images alsoadorn the circumference of themetal canopy around the top ofthe carousel so that, when thetoy is in motion, it renders anillusion of the famous cartooncat running.

“This toy is one of only acouple of known examples andmay have been made for a very

narrowly focused regional mar-ket. I’ve seen only two of themin 35 years as a toy dealer. Onewas found in New Jersey andthe other in Pennsylvania,”Sage said. “Collectors havebeen looking for this toy forev-er. It’s like hen’s teeth. Itappeared in a toy catalog, butuntil the first one actuallyturned up, many collectorsthought that maybe it didn’treally exist.” The example inMorphy’s sale was sourcedfrom the house of the originalbuyer and will be offered with a$20,000-$40,000 estimate.
