Intelligent and highly motivated, he graduat- ed from the University of Pennsylvania medical school in 1892 and continued his education in Germany, where he studied chemistry. While working for the H. K. Mulford pharmaceutical company in Philadelphia, he and his German colleague Hermann Hille co-invented the silver-based antiseptic Argyrol, which became the basis of Barnes’s fortune. In June 1901 Barnes married Laura Leggett of Brooklyn, New York. The couple built a new home, which they called “Lauraston,” on Union Avenue (now Latch’s Lane) in Merion, Pennsylvania, in 1905. In 1907, Barnes bought out Hille’s share of the Barnes and Hille Company, and in 1908 he estab- lished the A. C. Barnes Company in Philadelphia, which he continued to run until 1929. Barnes organized his employees’ work day to include a two-hour seminar, in which they discussed the writings of William James, George Santayana, and John Dewey, and examined original works of art. Barnes’s inter- est in art led to a resumption of his friendship with an old high-school friend, artist William Glackens. In 1912, Barnes sent Glackens to Paris to scout the galleries for Modern paintings. Glackens bought close to thirty works on Barnes’s behalf. Subsequently, relying primarily on his own eye, Barnes acquired an outstanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings; medieval manuscripts and sculp- tures; Old Master paintings; Native American fine crafts; Early American furniture and decorative art; and ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman art. He was also an early and influential collector of African sculpture. In 1917, Barnes enrolled in a post-graduate philosophy seminar at Columbia University taught by John Dewey. Barnes and Dewey became close friends and ideolog- ical collaborators, whose corre- spondence eventually spanned more than three decades. Inspired by Dewey’s theories of experien- tial education, “learning by doing” and social transformation, Barnes decided to expand his factory sem- inars into a more advanced experi- ment in education. In October 1922, Barnes pur- chased a twelve-acre arboretum, established in 1880 by Captain Joseph Lapsley Wilson that stood down the road from “Lauraston.” A few months later, on December 4, 1922, he received a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to establish the Barnes Foundation, an educational institution dedicated to promoting the appreciation of fine art and horticulture. residence and a gallery on thearboretum grounds. TheBarnes Foundation was offi-cially dedicated on March 19,1925.

Barnes’s intended audi-ence for the Foundationincluded factory and shopworkers, poor and disenfran-chised people, African-Americans and young artists. The Barnes educationalmethod was based on experi-encing original works, partic-ipating in class discussions, reading key texts in philoso-phy and the traditions of art,and looking objectively at theuse of color, line, light andspace in each work of art.Barnes believed that studentswould not only learn aboutart, but also would improvetheir critical thinking andtheir ability to learn and suc-ceed in general, enabling

them to be more productiveparticipants in a democraticsociety.

In 1940, Barnes pur-chased an eighteenth-centuryfieldstone farmhouse, whichhe named Ker-Feal, situatedon almost 138 acres of mixedfarmland and forest inChester County,Pennsylvania. In the historic

house, Barnes intended tocreate a “living museum ofart and to develop a botanicalgarden,” which wouldbecome part of theFoundation’s educationalmission.

Barnes struggled foryears with questions aboutthe eventual disposition ofhis Foundation, includingwhether it should remain anindependent organization orbe affiliated with an estab-lished institution of learning

such as the University ofPennsylvania. In 1947,Barnes made a donation toLincoln University, a small, historically black college inChester County,Pennsylvania, which was thebeginning of an associationbetween the Foundation andthe college. In 1951, Barnesamended the Foundation’sby-laws so that, eventually,Lincoln’s board of trusteeswould nominate four of thefive members of the Board ofTrustees of the BarnesFoundation.

On the afternoon of July24, 1951, with his dog,Fidèle, sitting at his side,Barnes drove off from Ker-Feal for an appointment atthe Foundation in Merion. On a rural road in ChesterCounty, a truck slammed intoBarnes’s automobile, killinghim instantly.

After Barnes’s death,Laura L. Barnes succeededher husband as President ofthe Foundation. Withinmonths, the Foundation wasembroiled in litigation. InFebruary 1952, PhiladelphiaInquirer editor Harold J.Wiegand brought suit in statecourt, arguing that the BarnesFoundation should be open tothe public without priorappointment. (At the time, visitors were required tomake an appointment inadvance and obtain an admis-sion card.) The case was dis-missed, and the PennsylvaniaSupreme Court affirmed thedecision in 1953. The subjectarose again in April 1958,however, when PennsylvaniaAttorney General Anne X.Alpern, along with DeputyAttorney General Lois G.Forer, petitioned theMontgomery CountyOrphans’ Court to compel theopening of the BarnesFoundation’s galleries to thepublic. Again the case wasdismissed, but this time the

ruling was overturned bythe PennsylvaniaSupreme Court. TheFoundation signed a con-sent decree on December19, 1960, agreeing toopen to the public onFridays and Saturdays ona first-come, first-servedbasis.

On September 24,2002, the BarnesFoundation announcedthat it would petition theMontgomery CountyOrphans’ Court for per-mission to expand itsboard of trustees andmove its gallery collec-tion to Philadelphia, where the Foundationwould construct a newbuilding. On December15, 2004, the courtapproved the petition.Camp resigned in 2005,and in 2006 Derek

Gillman was appointedExecutive Director andPresident. The announcementof the selection of TodWilliams Billie TsienArchitects as architects forthe new building and 4.5 acrecampus on the BenjaminFranklin Parkway was madein September 2007, and onNovember 13, 2009, a formalgroundbreaking ceremonywas held.

The Foundation’s new

93,000-square-foot buildingconceived as a “gallery with-in a garden and a gardenwithin a gallery,” is set with-in a four-and-a-half-acre sitewith landscape design byOLIN.

While the new campus onthe Benjamin FranklinParkway enables theFoundation to relax previousrestrictions on public visita-tion, admissions are timed so

AUCTION SALE BILLS

by Roy NuhnThis year has marked a

very important anniversary -the 200th birthday of CharlesDickens. In a way it’s also acelebration for postcard col-lectors, as well. A bit morethan a century has nowpassed since a treasure troveof postcards were publishedshowcasing the many novelsof Dickens, as well as thedozens of fascinating charac-ters he created with his quillpen. Everyone from DavidCopperfield and Scrooge toLittle Nell and Oliver Twisthave been featured, some ofthem many times on thesedecades-old postcards.

Charles Dickens certainlyranks as one of the mostimportant and influential

authors in thehistory of litera-ture. His master-pieces, like TheP i c k w i c kPapers, A Taleof Two Cities,and A ChristmasCarol - whatwould ourChristmases belike without thistale? - and GreatExpectations areimmortal.

Our schooldays exposed usrepeatedly to hisbooks. AndHollywood andtelevision creat-ed countlessportrayals of hisvolumes for our viewingpleasure.

It is no surprise that manycollectors consider the hun-dreds of different Dickens

postcards an enjoyable spe-cialty. So many cards wereproduced that it is a lifetimepursuit.

The artists of these cardsare well known. They include“K.Y.D.” (Joseph Clayton

Clark), “Phiz” (HablotKnight Browne) and HaroldCopping. None ofthem, though, designeddirectly for postcards, but were illustrators ofthe many book editionsof the Victorian era.Other important artistswere Sidney Carter,K.E. Cowderoy, andHerbert Beecroft.

Dickens’ col-lectibles are not limitedsolely to the picturepostcard. Tobaccocards, a host of noveltyitems - such as book-marks, calendars, andwrapping paper, andcomic books (especial-ly the famed ClassicsIllustrated line of the

1940s and ’50sin this country)are some of theother choices. Also, moviememorabi l ia ,calendars, spe-cial souvenirbook editionsand advertisingblotters.

The entireB r i t i s hCommonwealthand much of theEnglish-speak-ing world hadlong been hold-ing its collec-tive breath inanticipation ofthe arrival of1912. This wasto be the year ofKing GeorgeV’s coronationand, mostimportantly, thecentenary ofC h a r l e sDickens’ birth.

Some pub-lishers, especial-

ly Raphael Tuck & Sons, reprinted many of their earli-er Dickens set in 1912 to cashin on the nation’s enthusiasmfor anything Dickens.

Production of Dickens-themed postcards, thoughpeaked during theBicennential hoopla. Thenext ten years, or so, wereused mostly for selling of

backlog stocks. The eruptionof World War I in 1914 added

greatly to the public’s dimin-ishing interest in such thingsas picture postcards.

Some of these firms also

marketed their cards in thiscountry by partnering with avariety of American compa-nies. Tuck, on the other hand, funneled huge stocks of

Dickens merchan-dise (souvenirbooklets, coloringbooks, and post-cards) through theirNew York Citybranch.

Many of theimportant compa-nies in the industrysold Dickens post-cards. Stewart andWoolf, DavidsonBros., Cassell Art,C.W. Faulkner, S.Hildesheimer &Co., and RotaryPhoto were some ofthese.

But, most of all, heading the list was

Raphael Tuck & Sons. In all,the giant London firm pro-duced more than 24 wonder-ful sets. The various seriescarried such titles as“Dickens’ Characters,”

“Dickens’ Sketches,” “InDickens’ Land,” and

“Picturesque Hauntsin Dickens’ Land.”Most of the individualsets concentrated on aparticular novel andwere so titled.

The earliest Tuckswent on sale in 1902or 1903. Practicallyall had illustrationstaken from late 19th-century book plates. The work of suchartists as “Phiz” and“K.Y.D.,” both ofwhom had achievednational fame and for-tune as book illustra-tors, was heavily bor-rowed by Tuck for itspostcards.

Tuck’s entireDickens postcard lineunderwent numerousprinting runs, often inthe company’s popu-lar “Oilette,” “Art,”

A 1911 $20 PCGS proof66+ CAC - one of only 100coins of its type ever minted -topped Legend-Morphy’sOctober 10 premiere auctionevent with an above-estimateprice of $143,750. An espe-cially fine example, the coinoffered by Legend-Morphy isthe only 1911 $20 gold pieceever to be graded proof 66+by either PCGS or NGC.With that distinction, it wasentered in the sale with confi-dent expectations of realizing$100,000 to $110,000.Collectors felt it was worthevery penny of that andmore, adding another 30 per-cent to the high esti-mate by the time bid-ding had conclud-ed.

“I knew thatmany coinswould bringstrong prices, butthe sale far sur-

passed my expectations,”said Laura Sperber, notedcoin expert and partner in thenew Legend-Morphy ven-ture. The 220-lot auction hada sell-through rate exceeding80 percent.

Other coins that Sperberdescribed as having achieved“super-strong” prices includ-ed a 1783 threepenceChalmers PCGS AU53+CAC, which made $37,375;an 1863 proof set PCGSPR64-PR66, which sold for$32,200; and an 1862 $3PCGS PR63 CAC, whichtook in $23,000. All prices

quoted are inclusive of 15percent buyer’s premium.

Aside from coins, anothercollecting category thatsparked bidderinterest was gold

nuggets. Several fine exam-ples were auc-

t i o n e d ,

i n c l u d -ing a Peruvian

nugget that sold to a US pri-vate collector for $86,250.The specimen weighed 49.8troy ounces and came with35-year provenance from aTexas numismatic company

Another gold nugget soldto a bidder in China for$29,900.

“It had a unique look - itwas shaped like a dragon,”said company partner DanMorphy in describing the nat-ural treasure. “All of thenuggets in the sale did well.Internet bidders seemed to goafter them more than anyother category. They werevery competitive.”

Consignors seemed justas pleased as the buyers. Two

sisters who had consigned theabove-mentioned Chalmersthreepence - a privately mint-

ed coin made from Spanishsilver coins

seven

yearsafter the

Declaration ofIndependence was signed -were present in the gallery to

witness its sale.“They were

beside themselveswith the result,”said Morphy.“They evenbroughtalong

s o m eo t h e r

early coinsto consign with

us. We’ll be offering them infuture auctions.”

Morphy said galleryattendance was sparse, butthere was a good reason forthat.

“I’d say 95 percent of thebids were left with us prior tothe auction,” Morphy said.“There was a lot of excite-

ment because the coinswere fresh to the mar-

ket. Those who hadan interest didn’twait to place theirbids.”

Julie Abrams,president ofLegend-Morphy,

remarked: “This wasa boutique sale of very

choice coins. To generateso much interest with ourfirst auction and to achievesuch a high sell-through ratewas very exciting for all of usat Legend-Morphy. This saleintroduced our name to thehobby.”

Another greatsource of informa-tion are the manysales catalogs Tuckissued in bothEngland and in thiscountry. The 1912catalog, for instance, helps to identify thefour “Oilette” and“Art” sets sold underthe “In DickensLand” series heading.

New York City’s FranzHuld Co. (1900 to1909) was the onlyAmerican publish-er of Dickens post-cards. From 1905to 1907, Huldprinted and distrib-uted three sets ofsix cards each withthe artwork of“A.C.” (AlfredCrowquill). But,these were notoriginal works, butreprints of mer-chandise issued bythe British firm ofStewart and Woolfa couple yearsearlier.
