RED Antimicrobials considered important in treating refractory conditions in human and veterinary medicine. These will only be used following veterinary diagnosis on a case by case basis with sufficient evidence to indicate need.

1. 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins2. Fluoroquinolones3. Macrolides

The NZ Veterinary Association (NZVA) created the “traffic light” system to divide antimicrobials into three groups (green, orange and red). Green light antibiotics are less important to human health, and should therefore be used in preference to orange or red rated antibiotics, where practical. Red light products include the Critically Important Antibiotics which are important for human health. The NZVA recommendation is that they should be used only after veterinary diagnosis and on a case by case basis.

*Products with multiple active ingredients have been classified based on the highest rating.
