.Lifelong Health Regimen

Decrease your chance of age-related illnesses, like heart disease, gall stones, frail bones, blood vessels, gums, skin, immune system etc. later on in life. By not smoking, moderate exercise, avoiding sugar and limiting red meat and fat intake, and regular supplementation with scientifically well documented beneficial supplements IN THEIR CORRECT AND BIOLOGICALLY USABLE FORMS.A good supplement regimen from a reputable manufacturer using standardised manufacturing techniques is a way better option than popping a cheap daily multivite. An example of supplementation regimen using products from Solal Technologies:

I3COMPLEX™ : Contains Indole-3-Carbinol and Di-indole-methane from cruciferous extract, curcumin (turmeric extract), resveratrol (grape skin extract), quercetin (a major flavonoid), piperine, lycopene (red carotenoid in tomatoes), EGCG (from green tea), co-enzyme Q10, selenium, folic acid, mixed tocopherols (vit E), B6 and B12.

HOMOCYSTEINE LOWERING FORMULA :

Although a recent study showed that homocysteine is not the major culprit in blood vessel inflammation, the formula has other benefits. Methyl-donors (Folate plus B6, B12) are vital for normal DNA functioning.

DOUBLE VITAMIN C™ : Contains both fat-soluble ascorbyl-palmitate and water-soluble Ca-ascorbate.

Vitamin C plays a crucial role in formation of collagen in the body. Healthy collagen formation means stronger blood vessels, gums, skin, bone, ligaments and tendons. Take either the above form which includes storable vitamin C-ester, or a good slow-release formulation. Taking plain ascorbic acid won't benefit you much and can damage your kidneys. It will end up in the toilet within 30 minutes from taking it. Too much vitamin C can thicken blood vessels, but that may be a good thing in badly controlled diabetes and the aged who often have thin, frail blood vessels. A recent study showed people with the highest vitamin C intake had a 42% lower stroke risk. Take one DOUBLE VITAMIN CTM a day instead of the recommended 3 capsules if you also take other supplements that contain vitamin C.

CO-ENZYME Q 10 (with piperine to enhance absorption ):

CoQ10 plays a role in energy production of cells and is vital for the energy intensive heart muscle (and all other muscle). Generally you only need this supplement from age 50 upwards, since it is produced in the liver. It is produced in the same bio-synthetic pathway as cholesterol in the liver. Therefore, patients taking statin cholesterol lowering medication (which blocks the cholesterol pathway) should supplement with CoQ10. In addition to Solal's CoQ10 (ubiquinone) with piperine, they also sell a more expensive (supposedly better) version called CoQ10 ubiquinol.

KRILL OIL (NEPTUNE - NKO®) OMEGA 3 Krill are at the bottom of the ocean food chain and do not accumulate heavy metals like fish do. Fish get their own omega-3 fatty acids from sources like krill. In fish it is combined with animal fat. In krill, omega-3 is combined with phospholipids which is the healthiest form of omega-3 there is .Regularly taking Omega 3 in capsule form may be healthier than making fish your staple. Fish protein contain nitrosamine which may increase risk for stomach cancer, and toxic heavy metals like mercury and lead. Solal's Fish Oil Extract Omega 3 TM is heavy metal free. Omega 3 can prevent / delay macular degeneration, aids brain development and lowers blood triglycerides. It may help lower blood vessel inflammation and prevent oxidation of cholesterol. Solal special nr 5.

PROSTATE PROTECTION FORMULA™ : Contains I3C, DIM, lycopene, pygeam africanum, selenium, beta-sitosterol, curcumin and piperine.

I3C and DIM are extracts from cruciferous vegetables most likely responsible for their cancer incidence lowering effect. Lycopene is an anti-oxidant which concentrates in the testes and prostate. Curcumin is an extract of turmeric which can inhibit liver and prostate ca and BPH by binding to specific binding sites on cells in those organs which alters genetic expression when testosterone binds to them. See http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100519143356.htm

Breast Protection Formula TM : Contains the usual plus calcium-glucarate which aids the liver to clear harmful estrogen-metabolites.

SUPER MEGA-B™ : Energy production and nervous system function.

Do not take high doses of water soluble vitamins (B-complex and C) if you have impaired kidney function. It will place further strain on the kidneys.

VITAMIN D3 : You probably need more than you're getting.

Vitamin D has many proven health benefits. Vitamin D3 may be the most important form of the vitamin. Latest evidence is that it helps prevent tooth cavities, probably by aiding re-mineralization of teeth. Do not overdo it though. Too much is bad.

MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE :

Lowers blood pressure, helps keep heart rhythm regular, helps limit calcium deposits in blood vessel walls over long term, helps limit formation of calcium kidney stones, involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions and endocrine roles in the body. Also make sure you get sufficient zinc and selenium.(Included in many of these supplements). Calcium is also very important but should mainly come from a balanced diet which includes enough low fat dairy products. Yoghurt with live cultures is especially important, especially if sugar-free. Potassium and phosphate are seldom included in multi-nutrient formulas, because, like calcium are plentiful in foods we eat every day. Potassium and phosphate deficiency is virtually non-existent in healthy people. But many people are deficient in magnesium, zinc, selenium, manganese, boron, molybdenum and even calcium.

3-PER-DAY™ :

Adds a pleasant taste to wholewheat cereal if 2 capsules are opened and the contents mixed into the bowl of cereal. 3-PER-DAYTM contains very respectable levels of B-complex taken over morning and afternoon/evening doses, rather than all in one wasteful dose.

UPDATE: 3-PER-DAY NOW HAS THE LATEST MOST BIO-AVAILABLE FORMS OF THE B-COMPLEX VITAMINS. IT IS NOW ONE OF THE BEST MULTIVITAMIN FORMULAS ON THE MARKET.

Also a very good supplement and economical given what it all contains:EYESIGHT PROTECTION FORMULAHas lutein, zeaxanthin and a lot more.Goes well in combination with Brain Booster TM , Omega 3 fish oil, vitamin D3, Magnesium glycinate and multi-mineralTM.

IMMUNITY TM combines with:ACES PlusTM and Krill oil Omega3 and Colostrum-Super TM

Page 3: Anti Ageing Regimen __ Revised

GREEN TEA EXTRACT TM : Latest research supports its cancer protective reputation. One capsule has the polyphenols and EGCG of 5 cups of green tea.

A good all-in-one option is Solal Man, Solal Women, etc.:

(includes vitamin K2 in formula)

FULL SPECTRUM VITAMIN E : Most vitamin pills contain only alpha-TE. Too much alpha-TE can replace the other forms. The gamma and delta forms seem to have most cardiovascular benefit..

The full spectrum version of vit.E may aid sleep deprivation caused by long term stress; used in conjunction with a good multi-nutrient supplement like 3-a-day together with Omega 3 fatty acids, phospholipids and magnesium glycinate. It also treats fatty liver, so useful for diabetics. Alpha tocopherol alone (as found in most multivitamins) does not have much benefit in isolation from the other forms. Full spectrum E also keeps skin supple and probably blood vessels too. Protects cell membranes from free radicals.

Less crucial but worth trying:

GABATROPIN : Crosses the blood-brain barrier. Body-builders traditionally use GABA to increase Human Growth Hormone secretion during sleep. Note: Do not take GABA if you are taking Zopiclone, Zolpidem, Zopivane prescription sleeping medication.

Tired and worn-out to the point where you feel emotionally fragile and drained? Try L-Tyrosine, 1000 mg on a near-empty stomach (at least half hour before or after a meal) Do not take simultaneously with other amino acids. L-Tyrosine is the biologic precursor (only 2 biochemical steps away) to the brain hormone and neurotransmitter dopamine which gives emotional energy. For all-out depression, try the supplement 5-HTP, a dedicated precursor to serotonin.

MELATONIN SLOW RELEAS E

MULTI MINERA L : Amino acid-chelates, not inorganic salts.

MILK THISTLE:

Good liver protectant. Prevents hangovers when used in conjunction with N-acetyl cysteine (glutathione precursor) with phospholipids (lecithin) and alpha lipoic acid. Take vitamin C with NAC to prevent its oxidation to cysteine.

PREGNENOLONE : Precursor to DHEA and sex hormones.

7-KETO DHEA : All the benefits of DHEA but does not convert to sex hormones. No prescription.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone (on prescription only):

Obesity (pear shape), type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure are often associated with low testosterone in men in a condition called metabolic syndrome. A low testosterone test result may result in testosterone prescription – a potent anti-ageing hormone. Then you don't have to bother with DHEA. Always take Prostate protection formulaTM and progesterone cream when on testosterone therapy. An alternative to prescription testosterone may be USN's 17-Testo-methox.

Page 4: Anti Ageing Regimen __ Revised

Progesterone cream . (women and men – no prescription)

PC PHOSPHATIDYLCHOLINE : Essential for nervous system health and function. Also aids the liver.

(Lecithin 1200 mg may work out cheaper; lecithin should be in everybody's daily health regimen. It benefits the nervous system and the liver; and helps prevent gallstones in combo with milk thistle)

PS PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE : A “smart supplement” improves concentration, memory, dopamine level.

SPINTRAP ™ : Contains NtBHA which is the most powerful. Mitochondrial protectant.

There is still controversy over the role of vitamins A, C and E as anti-oxidants. Free radical damage to tissues is very real though and can be very destructive. Spin traps may be worth a try if you can afford it.

VITAMIN K 1 PLUS FORMULA

VITAMIN K 2

Vitamin K has an important role in calcium metabolism. Used with vitamin D3 it helps to keep calcium inside bones where it belongs and prevents deposition inside blood vessel walls. Gut bacteria produce vit. K but supplementation may be worthwhile, especially if on long term antibiotic therapy. K1 and K2 have different metabolic roles, but K2 is formed in the body from K1, so K1 is the most important. It seems to be expensive as well. A cheaper option is synthetic K3 which can fulfill the roles of both K1 and K2. Don't use vit.K if you're prone to blood clots. Vit. K is a vital factor in normal coagulation of blood.

RESVERATROL EXTRA STRENGTH (WITH GRAPE SEED EXTRACT )

(or take moderate amounts of red wine. Flavonols in grape seed extract may be more beneficial than resveratrol: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myricetin

http://www.iheal.co.za/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=1707&category_id=12&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=54

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID (75% Dual R-form; 25% S-form)

(important supplement for diabetic patients)

CHROMIUM POLYNICOTINATE :

(chromium salt of vitamin B3)

New product which I'm not familiar with but looks promising:

ARTERY CLEANSE & DEFENCE™ and ARTERY CLEANSE & DEFENCE™ - ARGININE FREE

Inflammation and Pain Formula and Phyto-joint Formula TM

Glucosamine may not live up to its promise to relieve arthritis, but it works well for sprained ligaments and tendons. It brings relief in tenosinovitis in combo with anti-inflammatories and possibly progesterone cream applied to the affected area (De Quervains tenosinovitis occurs in people with declining sex hormones). May be useful as a preventative supplement. Glucosamine taken at the same time as hypoglycemic drugs like metformin or glucophage can cause nausea.

Page 5: Anti Ageing Regimen __ Revised

Quercetin:From hence the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Apples are a good source of this flavonoid which have a protective role in the lungs. It is also found in grape seed.

IN SUMMARY:

On a restricted budget what should you use. I will use AT LEAST the following Solal products:

3-PER-DAY MULTIVITAMIN, FISH OIL EXTRACT OMEGA-3, VITAMIN D3, MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE AND GREEN TEA EXTRACT.

When not to opt for supplements:

Supplements are nutrients with health benefits. They are not medicine.

1.Have your fasting cholesterol and sugar checked by a doctor.

Abnormal cholesterol and sugar must be treated medically.

2.Avoid taking mega doses of niacin when on cholesterol lowering medication, they interact with unpleasant side-effects like muscle weakness.

3.Nutrient supplements may lower your chances to get cancer, but are not cancer treatments nor substitutes for medical check ups.

4.Fever blisters (Herpes virus) can be treated with supplementation like lysine, but OTC anti-virals are much more effective (if used from the onset of symptoms).

5.Vitamin E in large doses may enhance bleeding and is dangerous if you are taking blood thinning medication.

6.Likewise asprin has potent blood thinning effects that can kill you if you are on blood thinning medication or have an ulcer. This blood thinning effect makes asprin a useful preventative against heart attack (used in moderation, e.g. 100-200 mg every second day). Will also prevent DVT (deep vein thrombosis) which can develop if you sit still for prolonged periods as on aeroplanes. Asprin has now finally officially been affirmed to be able to lower incidence of some cancers, thus, a supplement in itself. Children and teenagers should not take asprin due to danger of Reyes disease. If someone may be experiencing a heart attack, asprin can save their life while waiting for paramedics to arrive, but can worsen other emergency conditions like brain hemmorhage stroke. Asprin must also not be taken while you are pregnant. By the way, a significant study has finally confirmed that asprin does indeed lower the incidence for some cancers, notably bowel cancer: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/CancerPreventionAndTreatment/aspirin-cuts-colorectal-cancer-risk-lynch-syndrome-patients/story?id=14827831

7.Calcium carbonate supplements and ant-acids interfere with uptake of antibiotics, other medication and some vitamins.

8.Post-menopausal women and men who are not regular blood donors must not take iron supplements unless prescribed by a doctor, as for anemic patients. The body cannot get rid of iron and it may build up to toxic levels.

9.With a regimen like above, avoid duplication. You don't want to overdo for instance, B6 by taking the daily doses of Homocysteine Lowering Formula and Super Mega B and 3-a-day Multivitamin.

10.Vitamin B12 should ideally become available (released from the capsule) in the stomach already. Cells in the stomach release Intrinsic Factor, which has to bind to the vit. B12 for it to be

Page 6: Anti Ageing Regimen __ Revised

absorbed in the gastrointestinal system (jejenum). It will not be absorbed if not complexed with IF. I do not know how long these capsules take to dissolve and at what part of the system their contents come free. Maybe it is in the stomach already, where they may remain a while with the food you have eaten (vitamins should be taken with food) to complex sufficiently with IF, but since I don't know, I like to open the capsules and mix the powder content into my Wholewheat Pronutro cereal. Don't mix with hot foods though as many vitamins are destroyed by heat. Also do not let it stand long. Vitamin C loses its potency the longer it remains exposed to oxygen in the air. Don't attempt with supplements containing curcumin (turmeric extract) – it tastes revolting.

11.Vitamin A (retinol) enhances immune defence of respiratory linings against viruses and is an anti-oxidant. It affects cell division, and a form of it is even used in treatment of some types of leukemia. But it easily builds up to toxic levels as the body stores it. Because it affects cell division, pregnant women must avoid retinol containing supplements and skin creams. Many multivitamins therefore contain the safe biologic precursor to vitamin A namely beta-carotene. The liver converts it to vitamin A in non-toxic amounts only, so overdosing is not such a risk.

Another case is vitamin D3 and minerals like selenium which have great long term benefits if optimal levels are maintained, but have toxic levels only relatively slightly above the optimal beneficial levels. You can safely take up to 3500 IU a day in supplements. Optimal amount to supplement is 2000 – 2500 IU a day. Always read the warnings on the labels. Remember the medical saying: Everything, even water is toxic if sufficiently over-consumed. Selenium levels in most staples are too low because the soils in which they are grown are depleted, hence the need for supplementation, but note some canned sea-fish contain up to 100X RDA for selenium per can.

12.Notes on melatonin supplements: melatonin is a brain hormone that makes us sleep. It also seems to help maintain healthy immune function. A study in Sweden some years back found that women working repeated extended periods of night shift have an increased chance to get breast cancer. It seems likely that suppression of melatonin production may be the cause. Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland and production increases during REM sleep. Levels naturally peak around 2 o'clock in the morning and is then suppressed by a feedback mechanism – so high levels gradually suppress further production. This explains why people taking melatonin supplements as a sleep aid often become wide awake and alert by around 2 o'clock – the high initial levels from the supplement causes the pineal gland to shut down prematurely. It is also naturally deactivated by substances produced when light falls on the retina. Messing with circadian rhythm is not a good idea, so this supplement should not be given to children except to treat jet-lag, which is its main purpose. It also aids sleep when sick with fever and is good to reset the body clock when changing to and from cycles of night shift. As a general supplement it should only be taken from above 40. Levels decrease with age which help explain why older people often have trouble sleeping.
