Café Historique: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Indigenous Rights Activist James Teit November 5th, 2019 @ 6:00 pm Hermann’s Jazz Club
Every once in a while, an important historical figure makes an appearance, makes a difference and then disappears. James Teit (1864-1922) spent four decades helping British Columbia’s Indigenous peoples challenge the settler-colonial assault on their lives and lands. Yet his story is little-known. Join Dr Wendy Wickwire for a long-overdue corrective aimed at according Teit the status he deserves: as one of the leading political anthropologists of the 20th century.

Life in an Ancient Athenian Brothel November 8th, 2019 @ 3:30 pm Clearihue A212 Presented by the Classical Association of Vancouver Island
Exploration of the space of the ancient brothel, its management, the workers, and their customers, as well as business practices using literary, visual, and archaeological evidence.
Dr. Glazebrook is Professor of Classics at Brock University. Her research centers on women, gender, and sexuality in ancient Greece, with a special focus on prostitution.

Distinguished Lecture: An Isolated Stop on the Road of Power November 27th, 2019 @ 7:00 pm Royal BC Museum Presented in partnership with the University of Victoria Anthropology Department
In 2018, Dr. Marcello Canuto, director of the Middle American Research Institute at Tulane University and co-director of the La Corona Regional Archaeological Project, led a team of archaeologists to new discoveries at the Maya site of La Corona, located in Petén, Guatemala. A nearly 1,500-year-old carved altar, the oldest found to date at the site, presents new evidence for how a powerful kingdom known as the Kaanul dynasty began. See this significant monument currently on display in Maya: The Great Jaguar Rises exhibition. Includes access to the Maya exhibition

Cuba Ethnographic Field School 2020
Dates: July 13 to August 3, 2020
Application deadline: November 15, 2019
Credits: ANTH 393 -1.5 credits and ANTH 395 - 1.5 credits for a total of 3 credits.

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria is organizing for another year the Cuba Ethnographic field school this Summer 2020.
This year’s theme is Audio-Vision in Revolution. While exploring audio-visual methodologies, participants will discover some of the unique contemporary cultural practices and social dynamics that characterize the biggest island in the Caribbean. The field school Contemporary Cuban Culture (ANTH 393) and Qualitative and Audio-Visual Field Methods in Ethnography (ANTH 395).
