COMPANY BACKGROUND

Today Calvin Klein, Inc. (a subsidiary of Philips Van Heusen Corporation) is leading the fashion design industry in both men and women apparel, accessories, fragrances, eye-wear, jewelry, watches, handbags, leather goods, home furnishings and more.

Mr. Calvin Klein was educated at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in 1962. With a small startup budget of $10,000 he started Calvin Klein Inc. in 1968 with a friend Barry Schwartz. His first big order was with Bonwit Teiler, which gave him worldwide recognition.

He’s most noted for his launch of designer jeans. The campaign featured the sexy model Brooke Shields stating that nothing comes between her and her Calvin’s. In 1982 he broke another fashion mold by making men’s underwear more than fashionable. In the ‘70s and ‘80s he launched designer fragrances: Obsession, Eternity, and Escape followed up in 1993 with the first unisex scent “cK One.

Calvin Klein sold the business to Philips Van Heusen Corporation in 2002 retaining the title of Creative Chief. Today the Calvin Klein empire is set in three different divisions: Europe, Asia, and Japan. There are currently three lines: The Calvin Klein Collection for men, women, and home; cK for both men and women and the cK jeans for men, women, and kids.

COMPETITIVE HOME MARKETPLACE

Currently “Calvin Klein Home” (CKH) carries the following home products: furniture, bedding, and rugs. They do not carry a paint line of products. Some of the designer names that CKH will have to compete with are: Pantone Universe, Alexa Hampton, Donald Kaufman, Jay Jeffers, Mary McDonald and Vicente Wolf. CKH line of home products is sleek, simple, and contemporary. They feel less sexy than most of the Calvin Klein line of products. The competition has much bolder colors.

DESIGN OBJECTIVE

The goal is to pair the existing Calvin Klein Home line of products with the new Home Paint line. The paint line needs to be architecturally rooted in the contemporary format. Most of the color line would coordinate with soft tones and a few bold ones.

The label will carry the Calvin Klein Home logo prominently front and center. The design will need to be elegantly simple with strong horizontal and vertical relationships. There should be a substantial amount of negative space.

ASSIGNMENT 1.1 DESIGN AND MARKETING BRIEF

PRODUCT LINE

Interior and exterior paint available in one-gallon, one-quart, an available spray can line and a refined 3 sable brush.

APPLICATION USAGE

Labeling that will be attached to matte gray one-gallon and one-quart cans. Labeling for a standard spray can and a gift box looking brush wrap.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Male and female ages between 30 and 50 who own their own home. The audience is an upscale urban individual who has a taste for fine things and does not compromise on price.

PRICE RANGE

High-end price range: Gallon $90, Quart $25, can $20, Paint brush $25

STORAGE AND DISPOSAL

Proper paint storage will eliminate safety concerns and keep your paint fresh for touch-ups or future projects. For

best results, cover the opening of the paint can with plastic wrap and securely seal the lid. When you are sure

the lid is leak-proof, turn the can upside down and store it in a place with a moderate room temperature to avoid

freezing. Be sure to choose a safe location that is out of the reach of children and pets. Dispose your leftover paint

in accordance with the city laws and guidelines provided your local waste removal and recycling center.

WARNING

NOTE: Never apply JEWEL Paint products on substrates exceeding 4 LBS hydrostatic pressure. Dry and cures time vary with the weather, temperature, ventilation or thickness of application. Allow extra dry and cure time for dark colors. Protect your investment, blistering is typically the result of uncured paint being contaminated by water!

DIRECTIONS

Never apply below 50F, above 85F, in hot direct

sunlight, when humidity is above 75% or when rain

is forecast within 48 hours. Most applications are by

roller-coat, however brush and spray applications

are acceptable. Recommend applying one coat of

primer or two coats of paint. We recommend using

3/8” non-shedding roller cover on smooth surfaces,

use higher nap covers on rough surfaces. When us-

ing over previously applied coatings we recommend

doing a test area before committing to the entire

project to prevent potential compatibility issues.

New concrete, plaster and masonry and similar sur-

faces should be allowed to cure a minimum of thirty

days before application. All recommendations,

written and verbal advice, these directions, label

instructions and standard industry practices must be

strictly adhered to or Limited Warranty is voided

PREPARATION

Remove all loose debris. When preexisting paint

is present your first step should be to establish how

many coats of paint are present. Scrape off all loose

paint. If repairs are needed, repair the surface

with the appropriate filler before you sand. Sand

the surface until the old layers of paint are smooth.

Clean with a dap cloth. All surfaces to be repaired

or painted must be allowed to dry thoroughly before

application. Wait until there is no sign of moisture

before moving forward. When there is a chance of

rain, you will want to wait until the forecast allows

sufficient low humidity, clear, dry warm weather to

prime or paint. Do not apply repair material, primer

or paint to wet surfaces

APPLICATION AND CLEAN UP

Apply paint evenly avoiding heavy build up. Do not

apply when the temperature is below 55F, above

85F, when humidity will be above 75%, or when

rain is in the forecast within 48 hours. Where de-

sired add ½ pint TS-160 A/H to one gallon of paint.

Dilute with recommended thinner only as needed.

Stir again thoroughly. Paint may be brushed, rolled

or sprayed. Apply evenly avoiding heavy build up.

Allow 24 hours or more, depending on weather,

color and mitigating circumstances, for the first coat

to dry then apply the second coat. Apply subse-

quent coats within 48 hours or sand between coats.

Actual dry, cure and re-coat times may be extended

depending on application method, application

techniques utilized, color and weather conditions.

Easy clean up with water for water-based paint or

paint thinner for oil-based paints.

Proper paint storage will eliminate safety concerns and keep your paint fresh for touch-ups or future projects. For best results, cover the opening of the paint can with plastic wrap and securely seal the lid. When you are sure the lid is leak-proof, turn the can upside down and store it in a place with a moderate room temperature to avoid freezing.

STUDIO by Calvin Klein is a fantastic new product on the market. Bringing paint technology and rich, beautiful designer colors to your home with less work and much more durability. And not only does STUDIO paint phenomenally perform better than others, it is also an extremely low VOC paint which is environmentally friendly and odorless.

DURABILITY

STUDIO by Calvin Klein is extremely strong new paint resin technology platform enables you to use any finish, in any color, on any surface. You no longer have to use eggshell or a gloss when you need durability. STUDIO enables you to use a matte in the bathroom or on the trim—it’s your choice.

FEATURES

DIRECTIONS

Never apply below 50F, above 85F, in hot direct sunlight, when humidity is above 75% or when rain is forecast within 48 hours. Most applications are by roller-coat, however brush and spray applications are acceptable. Recommend applying one coat of primer or two coats of paint. New concrete, plaster and masonry and similar surfaces should be allowed to cure a minimum of thirty days before application.

PREPARATION

Remove all loose debris. When preexisting paint is present your first step should be to establish how many coats of paint are present. Scrape off all loose paint. If repairs are needed, repair the surface with the appropriate filler before you sand. Sand the surface until

the old layers of paint are smooth. Clean with a damp cloth. All surfaces to be repaired or painted must be allowed to dry thoroughly before application. Wait until there is no sign of moisture before moving forward. Do not apply repair material, primer or paint to wet surfaces


Apply paint evenly avoiding heavy build up. Do not apply when the temperature is below 55F, above 85F, when humidity will be above 75%, or when rain is in the forecast within 48 hours. Paint may be brushed, rolled or sprayed. Apply evenly avoiding heavy build up. Actual dry, cure and re-coat times may be extended depending on application method, application techniques utilized, color and weather conditions.
