Hiring Manager:

I will obtain a Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and a Minor in Business and

Entrepreneurship from Oregon State University (see résumé). The requirements for this degree entail

obtaining experience in planning and designing structures and infrastructure, as well as working as

part of a group of peers that are able to contribute different perspectives to complete assigned

projects. While taking Traffic Operations and Design, I learned how to design a traffic system to

general transportation requirements. In taking Design of Steel Structures, I learned how to design

steel structures using the AISC Steel Construction Manual 14th

edition. In taking Surveying Theory, I

learned the basics of surveying principles and how to use surveying equipment to close a traverse to

within general requirements. While working on teams, I learned how to manage and balance the

different perspectives to create new ideas to solve problems, such as in my Construction Materials

class and in my Seismic Design class. In Construction Materials (see résumé), our team had to create

high strength concrete cylinders that met the criteria for ODOT Standard Specifications. In Seismic

Design, our team evaluated an existing building to determine if improvements were necessary based

on ASCE 31-03 criteria. I have also gained experience in using programs such as ArcGIS 9 Version

9.3.1, SketchUp Pro, SAP 2000 Student Version 7.40, AutoCAD 2012, Microsoft Office PowerPoint

2007, and Microsoft Office Excel 2007 while working toward my degree.

In conjunction with my formal classroom education, I have been involved with the Institute of

Transportation Engineers – OSU Student Chapter (ITE) as shown on my résumé. In case you are

unfamiliar with the ITE student organization, it is involved in many events such as the Annual

Student Traffic Bowl and the Western ITE Conference. Our ITE chapter invites representatives from

companies that are committed to improving highway infrastructure to visit student ITE members at

our scheduled meetings. While in ITE, I have held the positions of Treasurer and Activities

Coordinator. I have also been involved in gathering statistical information for the Corvallis City

Council on traffic flow in 2010, and for Trip Generation, which is a collection of traffic data, during

the winter term of 2012 as a member of ITE. Despite the fact that I did not provide analysis of the

data or write the report, I was able to gain invaluable experience in working on a team.

During my most recent experience as a volunteer (see résumé), I learned valuable skills in

communication and responsibility. In my position as a volunteer for the Statics Study Hall at the OSU

College of Engineering, I had to use my knowledge and understanding of Statics to help students

complete homework assignments, with the advice of Tona Rodriguez-Nikl and other volunteers. This

experience has vastly increased my knowledge of responsibility and teamwork, which I have found to

be beneficial while working on team projects throughout my educational experience.

I thank you for your consideration. I can be contacted during the day (PDT) at (505) 660-6834. At

any time, I can be reached via email at [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Julia Kautz

EDUCATION

Oregon State University Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering March 2013 PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVES

My career objectives include developing my skills as a Civil Engineer, progressing to a Professional Engineer, while focusing on large scale transportation projects. I want to be part of a construction and design team that develop a high speed rail network linking the major cities of the Pacific Northwest. EXPERIENCE OBEC Consulting Engineers - Engineering Intern: June 2012 - December 2012 Construction Inspection: Inspection for the OR-213 Jughandle Project daily tasks included: construction monitoring, quantity estimation, paving inspection, monthly installation notes, and daily reports. Pre-stressed Inspection: Provided Quality Assurance for pre-stressed girders, slabs, and hollow core slabs. Plan review, steel installation inspection, stressing observation, ACI testing observation, and pre/post pour observation and reports. Bridge Inspection: Part of two man teams for Lane County and Douglas County bridge inspection. Work included stream profiling all bridges over waterways in addition to visual inspection of bridge elements. Ron Wilson Center – Support Staff: January 2012 - June 2012 Enhancing the lives of individuals living with developmental and intellectual disabilities through daily tasks including: administering medications, personal goal tracking, financial tracking, cooking, cleaning, and interacting with clients. City of Salem Public Works – Engineering Intern: March 2011 - September 2011 Project Manager: Four major projects were researched, planned, estimated, and recommended for the City of Salem. Part of the work was to research various design concepts to apply to the site conditions. Detailed drawings and specifications were drafted for cost estimation as part of a technical recommendation the Public Works Department could use as a future project. Site Inspector: Support various crews with inspection of construction sites. Taking tickets of asphalt trucks, recording load temperature, and visual inspection of paving jobs were all completed. While crews were inspecting sites, survey staking of the site for additional work was simultaneous, which required fast and accurate work. Hicks Striping and Curbing Inc. - Road Striper: July 2010 - September 2010 While following specifications of projects, paints and plastics were applied onto roadways for state, county, and city jobs. Required to read and understand project plans for product placement and perform roadway layouts using ODOT specifications and guidelines.
